These are the months that we tend to find something to do indoors, and over the years the Valley has perfected that notion. The arts in the park and the early morning yoga classes are often set aside for the strolls through the Phoenix Art Museum or Musical Instrument Museum or taking some time to visit the Hall of Flame Museum. The theaters are in the offseason, but a few loyal companies put on performances that will entertain and intrigue audiences. Visit the Phoenix Theatre for its summer musical theater, dance classes or workshops. Arizona Broadway Theatre is in full swing with Grease and The Will Rogers Follies performances that will delight audiences of all ages. The crowds have faded and the works of art, performances, special events and educational series are plentiful and awaiting locals’ participation. From the Children’s Museum of Phoenix to the Heard Museum North, there is plenty to fill those hot, hot days. Get in during the calm before these great venues go into full bloom again in the fall.

Shopping is virtually unaffected by the heat. Yes, it heats up in the summer, but the malls and shopping districts accommodate with misters or the comfortable indoor temp of 72 degrees. Unique and off of the beaten path this time of the year may not be the first choice, but summer promotions and hot deals are driving shoppers in. Frances Vintage, a unique treasure in Central Phoenix, is a cottage-like boutique with one-of-akind gifts, paper goods, vintage women’s clothing and gifts for babies, kids and men. Equally intriguing is Garage in Old Town Scottsdale, which is a boutique for infants and kids. Gifts, toys, clothing by well-known designers and beauty products make this the “tween” place to be. Outdoor malls are all about accommodation as well. Biltmore Fashion Park offers cool drinks and many restaurants to rest in after a day of shopping. Westgate City Center in Glendale and SanTan Village in Gilbert may be outdoors, but they house top shops from Charming Charlie’s to Coach at SanTan and Fossil to Quiksilver at Westgate. 2BU Aveda Salon & Spa 7014 E. Quick Tips
Blow Your Mind There are no cuts, no colors, just blow-dried dos by stylists who will consult and go to town using the salon’s favorite weapon: the blow dryer. It’s not all about simple dry hair. At Drybar, guests have additional options to the “blowout,” including the “Floater,” a 10-minute head massage; the “Uptini,” an updo; or the “Hair Shot,” a repair to dry or color-treated hair. Parties and other fun occasions are a part of this upbeat rejuvenating salon experience.

Getting Exposed Cooling off means hitting Valley pools, whether at home or in public at a resort. Pebbles Swimwear is a local company with two locations whose mission is to offer fashionable swimwear to fit every “body” — from the one-piece to mix-and-match separates. An associate is on hand to be that extra set of eyes coupled with experience of the trends. An inviting and private atmosphere means you’re sure to find the perfect suit for that vacation, backyard party or just sittin’ in the sun that will be flattering.
Sure they’re similar city to city, but many Valley malls are unique enough that you’ll enjoy more than just the offerings.

A hot summer
means fun in the sun and on the water. The Valley summer begins to wind down, but the heat keeps on coming. To cool off, be smart and take advantage of end-of-season discounts and promotions at Valley water parks. Golfland Sunsplash, Big Surf and Wet ’N’ Wild are all the best places to be during the heat of the day or the “cool” of the night. Open late on weekends for added refreshment. Valley rec goes indoors as well with AZ on the Rocks, a rock climbing gym. Bounce around at SkyPark or Flip Dunk Sports, an indoor playground where kids and family can literally bounce off the walls and enjoy activities on trampolines and other play for the adventurous. Sports and rec indoors has become a Valley pastime and preps us for those great outdoor sports in the spring and fall. This is the time of year when both baseball and football cross over. Diamondbacks games for that baseball fan or a preseason Cardinals game will satisfy the sports enthusiasts and provide fun for the whole family. ACADEMY OF CLASSICAL BALLET

Sangria Social
Queen Creek Olive Mill is known for its Sangria. Sip the Red Sangria or White Sangria to chase any blues away this summer. Cool Dishes
Who needs the sizzle of the grill in the summer? Go for that cold salad, iced tea and frozen dessert at RA Sushi.Yes the sushi is cool, too, but this Valley-wide sushi-ery is all about being cool this summer with an “un-cooked” variety of cooking. Multiple Valley locations rasushi.com
Having become one of the top culinary destinations in America, the Valley is now home to most known new restaurants spanning the nation as well as home to many great new creations by local chefs and exciting existing establishments with new concepts and tasting alternatives to the cuisine of the past. Dining hubs are popping up within malls and urban districts that include SanTan Village, The Districts at both Desert Ridge and Tempe Marketplace, Downtown Phoenix (including CityScape, the Melrose District, Roosevelt Row and North Central Avenue) and Old Town Scottsdale. Patios come alive with misters present deep into September, and cool drinks, light entrées and desserts become a desert standard. Foodies will delight in all of the new restaurants that are opening as well, including Mad G’s in Tempe, Del Frisco’s Grille in the Biltmore Corridor and Blue Hound in the new Palomar Hotel in CityScape. Always tempting the palate are several Valley standards that are anything but. Cork in Chandler is a pleasure (except in July, when it is closed). Christopher’s Crush in the Biltmore offers some refreshing summer fare, as does Eddie Matney at his always satisfying Eddie’s House in Old Town Scottsdale. Aiello’s Fine Italian Dining 5202 N. Kiss the Cook A west-side must for breakfast, Kiss the Cook is a longtime family-owned hot spot that cooks up some great breakfast standards which include great breads and pastries, hash browns and the home-cooked omelets that make this early morning meal a memorable event. Biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash and the pancakes are faves that bring Valley residents and visitors coming back.
Modern Saloon Like the Old West, Old Town Whiskey is a throwback to the days of the old hitching post saloons but with a modern twist. Located in The Saguaro Scottsdale hotel, this “lobby bar” is turning eyes and tempting taste buds with elaborate snack foods by Chef Jose Garces and more than 100 varieties of whiskey, bourbon, rye and scotch. In a “modern-rustic” setting, make it a relaxing drink after work or a casual stop on your way to (or from) the Saguaro Spa.

With the heat,
now’s a time to pick and choose the best places to be: cool patios and air-conditioned dance clubs. The night comes alive in many parts of the Valley, but nowhere more so than Old Town Scottsdale. This hub of the nightlife scene boasts everything from the hippest, crazed “TMZ-known” bars to the cool, quiet lounges to just enjoy some world-class libations. From the wine bar to the dance hot spots, Old Town is home to the best-known Axis-Radius, a longtime standard for great drinks and dancing. Visit Martini Ranch for some live music and action. The place fills up nightly and there are many notable special events. The oldest saloon in Scottsdale is the Rusty Spur Saloon on Main Street. This is the Old West at its nighttime best. Spot celebrities among the usual crowd in this authentic Old West atmosphere complete with swinging doors. Downtown Phoenix, with or without a sporting event, is still a Valley party zone. Bars surround US Airways Center and fill the new CityScape. Check out Tilted Kilt or, newly remodeled, The Strand Urban Italian.
