This is the time
of year when all of the summer planning comes together. Arts venues across town (and even those national shows shipped in) are open for all. It is time to pick those seats for the season’s best. From new exhibits at the Valley’s art museums to fresh plays at the array of theaters, now is when we can pick what we want to be a part of as the choices get better and better each year. Arizona Opera is excited about its new season, which will include performances of Roméo & Juliette and the well-known Il Trovatore. The Phoenix Symphony has exciting traditional symphonic performances and some enticing entertainment in store for this season, with Ravel’s Piano Concerto conducted by Tito Muñoz and “Wicked Divas,” a compilation of some of Broadway’s best-known hits. If theater is the thing, don’t miss Actor Theatre’s Opus or Arizona Broadway Theatre’s rendition of classics like Oklahoma, Annie and the new hit 9 to 5. Venues all over the city are preparing to fill their seats for this season’s performances. Museums are open and ready to exhibit, galleries are welcoming enthusiasts as the season comes alive. Fall is just the beginning of the shopping season for most. Metropolitan Phoenix has become one of the world’s best destinations to find everything, from the unique designs of cultures and craftsmen around the world to local artisans’ creations. Whether you hit a mall or stroll throughout Old Town Scottsdale, the options are plenty. Some of the best shops known around the world can be found at either Biltmore Fashion Park or Scottsdale Fashion Square. For a more “down to earth” shopping experience, Downtown Phoenix is becoming a shopping hub for the urban scene, with vintage shops, haute couture boutiques and eclectic furniture stores and art houses. The suburbs are becoming as urban as the center of town, with SanTan Village in Gilbert, Chandler Fashion Center and downtown Mesa. Historic Glendale has always been the antique hot spot and comes into its own during the fall as its shops prepare for some of the biggest holiday events in the area. Glendale Glitters and other fun happenings come alive in the historic streets of Glendale. Stores open late to satisfy the shopper in you.

A World A-park Among the most unique boutiques in America, Cornelia Park at Biltmore Fashion Park is not to be missed. An extensive inventory of MacKenzie-Childs Home Collection — one of the most exclusive lines of handcrafted pottery, tableware, glass, furniture and furnishings — is what makes this quaint boutique such a find. Fabrics and a staff that can work any piece into your own décor makes a visit special whether you’re looking for a set of dishes or a new look for your entire home.
Sure they’re similar city to city, but many Valley malls are unique enough that you’ll enjoy more than just the offerings.

There are plenty of ways to stay active and keep cool in the
Valley, even when the temps are still in the triple digits. BounceU in Gilbert offers bounce-house fun for kids inside giant, air-conditioned rooms. They can run, jump, slide and tackle inflatable obstacle courses. Sign yourself and the kids up for hockey clinics or ice skating lessons at the Coyotes Ice Den, the official training center for the Phoenix Coyotes which was also voted one of the Top 10 Rinks in the nation by USA Today. The Phoenix Rock Gym, home to the largest indoor rock climbing space in Arizona, is where you can tackle 30-foot climbing walls. And if you’re looking for outdoor fun, the Valley offers plenty of that, too! Grab the pooch and explore Cosmo Dog Park, with its sweeps of green, fenced-off areas and even a small lake where Fido can cool off and practice his swimming skills. Enjoy the train rides and railroad museum at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, and, if you want a little more action, try Westworld Paintball Adventures, where you and your friends can battle it out at Splatter Ranch amid more than 20 acres of the Sonoran desert. It’s no secret
the Valley is known for its lush, green golf courses. After all, with practically year-round sunshine, the weather is perfect for play. Not to mention championship courses that draw professional golf players from around the country are enough to lure any golf aficionado. Tee up at one of the Valley’s resort golf courses, where you can enjoy challenging play and access resort amenities. At The Boulders, you’ll play among the backdrop of the breathtaking desert landscape and on two championship-level Jay Morrish-designed courses. It has been consecutively ranked one of the best courses in the country for more than 10 years by Golf Magazine and Travel & Leisure. For a links-style course with desert hazards, try the greens at Arizona Grand Resort. Or try one of the family golf programs at The Westin Kierland Golf Club, where instructors are PGA- and LGA-certified professionals. ARIZONA BILTMORE GOLF CLUB

Wine & Dine
The Valley is known
for having nurtured and established many chefs and restaurateurs who have made it on the national and international stage. From classics that have been around for as many as 60 years to the latest concept popping up all over the Valley, Phoenix and its surrounding communities are a cornucopia of memorable flavors, eclectic concepts and ethnic-influenced culinary creations. The new Brat Haus in Scottsdale is home to artisan sausage, with craft beers and Belgian fries. Sam Fox sees Phoenix as a virtual Petri dish of concepts tested to move onto the national stage. From his Culinary Dropout “gastro-pub” foods to the ultrahealthy True Food and a reinvention of North, Fox has dazzled the local restaurant scene. Restaurant reinventions from classic chefs Eddie Matney (Eddie’s House) and Christopher Gross (Crush) are constantly revitalizing us as the place for food. Master chefs come here and are created here because of our diverse tastes and interest in the finest cuisine. Is this why every major restaurant chain in America comes to the Valley?

Offering plenty of appetizers served for the table (or smaller for individuals), it is located at CityScape at the Palomar Hotel. The food is contemporary bistro mixed with American classic dishes served creatively for flavor. The bar is a experience itself, with mixologists who can concoct any libation imaginable, or patrons can choose from the menu of refreshing combinations.

Try the taqueria menu for some “south of the border” tacos made with salmon, fish, crab and shrimp. Or the old favorites: beef, chicken and pork.

From swanky lounges
and rooftop clubs to your Arizonaclassic cowboy bars, there’s entertainment and fun for everyone in the Valley’s nightlife scene. And the best part is, no matter where you choose to play, you’ll find plenty of variety right within walking distance! Wine lovers, soak up the intimate speakeasy vibe at Kazimierz World Wine Bar, which resembles a wine cellar complete with stone walls, dark corners, cozy couches and a list of more than 2,000 wines. If you prefer live music you can sing along to, don’t miss Geisha A Go Go, just a short walk away. This Japanese lounge draws a regular bar crowd on weekends and private parties in the Karaoke rooms. W Scottsdale’s Shade Bar rooftop lounge and the posh Glendale restaurant SKYE are hotspots for local trendsetters and hip visitors alike. You’ll want to plan ahead as lines start around 10:30. Cadillac Ranch in Tempe attracts both a college and older crowd ready to battle its mechanical bull. And party-goers can play poolside day or night at Spanish Fly Mexican Beach Club, where pool party meets nightlife and you can spend your days or evenings sipping Mai Tais in plush, white cabanas.
