There once was a time in our Valley’s history, when central Phoenix was considered a great place to catch a show or a game. But be sure to grab a bite before heading downtown—the options were minimal. Thankfully, those days are long gone. Today, the winds of change have blown through the city’s landscape, leaving behind a plethora of restaurants, cafÊs, eateries and bars that have elevated downtown Phoenix into a true culinary destination. From gourmet pizza, to high-quality steaks and seafood, to artisan breads, downtown is filled with independently owned and operated establishments headed by some of the Valley’s most celebrated chefs, many of whom have been recognized in the culinary world with local, national and international awards. Downtown is also home to the Valley’s most historic restaurants, establishments that have served the city’s political, sports and entertainment sets for years. And when it comes to cuisine, downtown’s dining scene is so diverse, you’ll find yourself navigating an international map of flavors. Whatever tastes you crave, downtown Phoenix has a restaurant that will satisfy your palate. In this issue of You Are Here: Central Phoenix, discover the great places to dine and drink throughout downtown and central Phoenix. From the iconic Durant’s, to the wildly popular Pizzeria Bianco (even Oprah loved it!), to the soulcomforting down-home fare of Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles, downtown is the perfect destination to treat your taste buds to some of the finest dining the Valley has to offer.

Born in Melfi and raised in Caserta, Italy, chef Guido Saccone has mastered the art of pizza making. Stop by this charming 1913 bungalow-turnedpizzeria and treat yourself to Saccone’s thin-crusted pizza with a faint taste of char, topped with authentic ingredients including prosciutto, bresaola, anchovies, fresh tomatoes, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, basil or arugula.
Culinary powerhouses Matt Carter and Jay Boginske team up in the kitchen of nine 05, formerly Fate, in roosevelt row. The two are reunited after working together at Michael’s at the Citadel in north Scottsdale and Zinc Bistro in Kierland Commons. Their newest venture offers modern Asian dishes including sesame eggplant dumplings, vindaloo chicken and a scrumptious pork belly friend rice.

Chef Johnny Chu has been at the forefront of downtown’s dining evolution since he opened Fate, downtown’s celebrated Asian bistro in roosevelt row. Chu has since moved on and last year, opened Sens, a unique dining concept that offers tapas-style Asian flavors, including pork and shrimp shu mai and papaya mango spring roll.
Pasta Bar 602-687-8704 pastabaraz.com
Fine Italian dining has made up much of chef Wade Moises’ career, but the new York transplant—who has worked in the kitchens of Mario Batali—is getting back to basics with the Pasta Bar on First and Pierce. Self-described as a “very simple trattoria,” Moises serves up fresh salads, antipasto and sides. But from the gnocchi to the fettucine, it’s the pasta that really shines.
St. Francis 602-200-8111 stfrancisaz.com
Downtown’s newest neighborhood eatery comes to us courtesy of chef Aaron Chamberlin, whose illustrious career includes restaurants in new York City, San Francisco, Boston and Arizona, including La Grande Orange Pizzeria, Chelsea’s Kitchen and radio Milano. At St. Francis, diners can expect American comfort food, including fresh fish and butcher’s cut selections.

Museum Eats
In the Valley, the changing of the seasons isn’t marked by cooler temps and autumn colors. Rather, we know fall has arrived when galleries and performance companies launch into a brand-new season of innovative shows and exhibits. From the Phoenix Symphony and Arizona Opera to Space 55 and the After Hours Gallery, downtown is ramping up for a new season of shows and performances that will have Valley art lovers clamoring for more. During the summer, the downtown arts community has been hard at work putting together a stellar lineup filled with thought-provoking art exhibits to high-energy live performances. On stage, this season’s highlights include Ballet Arizona’s Swan Lake and The Kite Runner, presented by the Arizona Theatre Company. Downtown’s visual arts community is also offering a number of highly-anticipated exhibits from national and local artists, including a stunning showcase of photographic art in “Face to Face: 150 Years of Photographic Portraiture” at the Phoenix Art Museum.

The weather may soon be cooling down, but that doesn’t mean downtown’s hotspots are, too. In fact, with the sports and entertainment season in full swing, downtown is the place to be and be seen. Whether you like your bar scene cool and cozy and or energy-fueled and a little bit frenzied, downtown’s got it all. But what makes the downtown scene even more cool is the great mix of bars and nightclubs that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere in the Valley. If your social profile leans more towards a quiet evening with a few brews and close buds, central Phoenix has an array of neighborhood pubs and bars that will make you feel right at home, such as roosevelt Tavern on roosevelt row. If your ego demands a bit more attention, the place to be is Bar Smith. With its swanky interior and rooftop bar, you’ll have your chance to bask in the glow of downtown’s hippest scene.

Talk about exclusive… Entry to Verve is reserved for select Phoenix Suns ticket holders, but free passes are given out at nightclubs around the Valley. Just look out for a Suns dancer and you’re in! 201 E. Jefferson St. 602-379-7800
When it comes to pro sports, gone are the days of beer gardens and port-ojohns. Today’s game day experience is a true night out on the town. Case in point, Verve Energy Lounge in the us Airways Center. Velvet walls, flat-screen TVs, dramatically-lit bars and a live DJ make this place more swank than sport.
