That’s Hot

City gears up for “best summer ever GETTING HERE

Appropriately named, Central Phoenix is within 15 miles of most surrounding Valley cities and is roughly bounded by Glendale Avenue (north), Buchanan Street (south), 15th Avenue (west) and 16th Street (east). South of the I-10 is designated as Downtown, while north is called Uptown.

By Car

Follow the 51, 1-17 or 202 freeways to the I-10 and take the Seventh Street or Seventh Avenue exits to begin in Downtown. Thanks to an easy-to-navigate grid system, side streets can be used to reach the length and width of the central corridor. To start in Uptown, take the 51 to the Glendale Avenue exit.

By Bicycle

While we wouldn’t recommend long-distance treks in the dead of summer, Central Phoenix can be reached on bicycle via the Grand Canal, which runs from 75th Avenue and Camelback to Papago Park.View a map at srpnet.com.

By Bus

Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes and schedules, visit valleymetro.org.

Contrary to popular belief, the streets of Central Phoenix are no longer empty and abandoned (imagine obligatory tumbleweed rolling by) once the mercury rises. Rather, the area heats up with a dizzying array of cultural, dining, shopping and entertainment options that exude a new sophisticated urban style. First Fridays. Phoenix Art Museum. Chase Field. Pizzeria Bianco. Orpheum Theatre. Cheuvront Wine Bar. Stinkweeds. Bunky Boutique. These are just a few of the distinctive destinations that have established the city’s revival from sleepy town to burgeoning city. The fifth largest city in the country, Phoenix has experienced a resurgence throughout its urban core in recent years. The city is coming alive with new restaurants, shops, art galleries, concert halls and museums occupying once rundown warehouses and abandoned buildings. Central Phoenix is also becoming a place residents can call home. Historic neighborhoods are filled with families young and old, while new high-rise developments welcome young professionals and established empty nesters. Whether you live in the +PIRHEPI Valley and want to get reacquainted 4EVEHMWI :EPPI] with the city you once knew or 7GSXXWHEPI 'IRXVEP you’re new to the area and want to 4LSIRM\ discover all that Central Phoenix has to offer, this guide will introduce you 8IQTI to the places and events that embody the hip and sophisticated urban renaissance the city is experiencing. youarehereaz.com

Case in point: the Trunk Space. Located on Grand Avenue near Roosevelt, the venue hosts local and national acts including The Carrots, a 60s-inspired female band from Austin, Texas, scheduled to perform in May. But wait, there’s more. The Trunk Space is also an experimental theater, improv comedy venue and home to knitting circles, spelling bees and show & tell nights. For something edgier, artist Lee Berger brings PHiX to the downtown music and art scene. Located on Grand near Thomas Road, the former motorcycle repair shop now hosts everything from art exhibitions to punk rock concerts. PHiX has become a favorite among the live music set in town. Another venue that takes its music seriously is The Brickhouse near Central Avenue and Jackson Street, just south of the US Airways Center. This summer, sample a cool mix of acts such as acoustic guitarist Joey Arroyo or punk group the Sick Puppies. Also check out Brickhouse Live, an online component that features show footage and live chat with the bands. 1 515 ARTS

This summer, the Valley’s pro sports teams are ramping up their seasons with a few new fan programs. On May 11, the Arizona Diamondbacks are celebrating Valley moms with a Mother’s Day Picnic on the Field. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the outfield grass where you can coax her into a game of a catch or let her just soak up the grandeur of Chase Field from the best seat in the house. Either way, she’ll love you for it. The Phoenix Mercury have the same idea going as they honor dear old dad with the annual Father-Daughter 2-Ball Tournament on June 14. Dads and daughters will battle it out in a shooting tournament with winning teams receiving court side seats to a Mercury game. And in an ultimate move in fan satisfaction, the Arizona Rattlers have guaranteed season ticket holders a trip to the playoffs or their money back. Perhaps one of the most unique campaigns in sports history, it just shows how much those Rattlers love their fans.

It’s true. We Phoenicians have perfected the concept of spectator sports: air-conditioned venues with retractable roofs. It’s a beautiful thing.

You’ve heard it more than enough at your cousin’s wedding. But it actually is fun to stay at the YMCA, particularly now that the Lincoln Family YMCA in downtown Phoenix has undergone a renovation that includes a new 3,600-square-foot free weight center and a rooftop outdoor running track. Now put your hands up in the air…

Event Parking Arriving early, knowing that you’ll spend $10 - $15 on a space for your car and consenting to a bit of a walk will make parking in CenPho a delight - if that’s possible.

Out & About

Cool, cool summer happenings

Yes, it’s true. Summer in the city is bustling with activity and some really cool (literally) things to do. Here’s a sampling of events through July. Sounds of Hollywood May 10 Symphony Hall phoenixsymphony.org The silver screen’s most memorable scores come alive in this tribute to Hollywood highlighting the works of the industry’s most prolific composers including Alfred Newman, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and John Williams.

Frock n’ Roll May 17 Alice Cooper’stown alicecooperstown.com Duran Duran, May 6th

Tease that hair and break out the blue eyeliner because 80s sensation Duran Duran is back on tour with their new album Red Carpet Massacre. Even though it’s 20 years later, Simon LeBon and crew are still rocking it.

Interested in saving the planet while partaking in a libation or two? This social gathering brings “green” conscious people together to share ideas on creating, developing and implementing sustainable living. Call (480) 946-9600 for location.

Fashion and rock come together in this fundraising event benefitting Valley charities including the Sojourner Center and the ASPCA. As bands play, models show off fashions by local designers. Call it couture for a cause.

Phoenix Antique Market May 17-18 Arizona State Fair Park azantiqueshow.com You know how the saying goes: What’s old is new again. If antiques define your signature

style, then you’ll hit the jackpot at this event featuring glassware, pottery, collectibles, toys, military items, coins and vintage costume jewelry.

Balanchine June 6-8 Symphony Hall phoenixsymphony.org The Phoenix Symphony presents three memorable works from George Balanchine: La Sonnambula; The Four Temperanments; and the Mozart masterpiece, Divertimento No. 15. A grand finale to a magnificent season

Big Boys & Their Toys June 13-15 Phoenix Convention Center bigboysandtheirtoys.com Where can you find a tricked-out Hummer with entertainment system, personalized slot machine and poker table, and your very own chopper all under one roof? At this annual expo that says, if you can dream it, you can have it (for a price, of course).

Nuts for Narnia

If you loved the movie, then you’ll get a kick out of the center’s new exhibit based on the film. Check out authentic costumes, props and set dressings. 600 E. Washington St. azscience.org

Ever wonder what it feels like to experience a geological event so extreme it could possibly change life as we know it? OK, that may be going a bit too far, but at the new Forces of Nature exhibit, you’ll be in the center of all the earth-shattering action, from hurricanes to earthquakes. Now open at the Arizona Science Center.

2008 Arizona Comedy Experiment June 18 Herberger Theater Center arizonacomedy experiment.com. Funny weathermen are a staple of the TV news industry, right? If so, then there’s no one more suited to host this comedy event than Brad Perry of Channel 3 (KTVK). Hilarity ensues with a showcase of Arizona’s top comedians and comedy troupes.

Eddie Izzard: Stripped

June 24 Dodge Theatre livenation.com

July 22-23 Orpheum Theatre Known for his lightening quick wit and surreal brand of humor, British comedian Eddie Izzard bares all in this one-man stand-up act. If Monty Python tickles your funny bone, you can’t miss this show.

What an unlikely couple. Modern rockers 311 go on tour with the Doggfather himself, Snoop Dogg. Enjoy a mix of 311’s rock, reggae, hip-hop and funk with Snoop’s signature brand of rap. It’ll be a night to remember. Cyndi Lauper, June 25.

True Colors Tour with Cyndi Lauper June 25 Dodge Theatre truecolorstour.com With guests including the B-52s and Rosie O’Donnell, this performance is more than just about the music—a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian and transgender civil rights organization.

Ringo Starr, July 31.

Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band July 31 Dodge Theatre livenation.com Ringo Starr, rock and roll’s favorite drummer, is back with this special concert featuring Colin Hay, Billy Squier, Hamish Stuart, Edgar Winter and Gary Wright.

Lighter Side

Eateries dish out cool summer fare QUICK TIPS 20

Tea of Tranquility

Discover the art of the tea ceremony at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Held in the garden’s teahouse, guests participate in the ancient tradition that dates back to the 11th century. Reservations required. 1125 N. 3rd Ave. japanesefriendship garden.org

21

Fresh & Easy

C4 has a new summer menu.Try the tasty seafood ceviche or the heirloom tomato salad with avocados & citrus. Afterwards, have a frosty drink at the Clarendon’s 50s-inspired pool. 401 W. Clarendon Ave. (602) 252-7363

8

At Sonoma Casual Dining, satisfying salads are the cool order of the day.Try the prawn avocado salad made with mixed greens, Mexican prawns and avocado slices tossed with a tangy balsamic vinaigrette. Hana Japanese Eatery serves up generous helpings of super fresh toro, uni and tamago. As well as bento boxes filled with chicken, beef or tempura selections. If the “ladies who lunch” crowd is your speed, treat yourself to the Skinny at Palatte, a dainty and delicious sandwich made with sprouts, avocado, pickled red onion, citrus aioli and feta. And of course, don’t forget the ice cream. For a complete throwback to an age of jukeboxes and soda jerks, MacAlpine’s and Mary Coyle are the places to be. Housed in an original Rexall Drugstore that opened in 1928, MacAlpine’s serves up, get this, phosphates and egg creams at its vintage soda fountain. For the ultimate in brain freeze, share the Mountain at Mary Coyle. Made with seven pounds of ice cream with whipped cream, four toppings and nuts, you’ll never be the same again.

Uncorked

If you prefer the cork to the can, check out Cheuvront’s twice-monthly wine tasting. In May, Argentinean wines are on the menu, including the full-bodied Malbec. Did someone say “ole?” 1326 N. Central Ave. (602) 307-0022

26

When it comes to summer dining, who wants a hot and heavy meal? Thankfully, downtown eateries have ramped up their menus with light and easy dishes that are sure to cool your taste buds.

Charming and cool come together at Lisa G, where the food looks and tastes good as the surroundings. Owner Lisa Giungo brings dishes together inspired by family recipes, including the popular Lisa’s Bowl of Balls (pictured).
