Trail Blazers McDowell Sonoran Preserve

Hike, bike and trek Scottsdale’s desert trails

QUICK TIPS

Road Warriors Who needs France when we have our own thrilling bike race right in our backyard? In October, the Tour de Scottsdale puts pro and noncompetitive riders to the test as they traverse a challenging 70-mile course through north Scottsdale. Time to break out the yellow jersey! Market Street at DC Ranch dcbadventures.com

Cool Climb

18

Don’t let the summer heat stop you from enjoying the thrill of your next rock climbing adventure. AZ on the Rocks offers 14,000 square feet of climbing terrain in an oh-so-cool setting. Instructional events and corporate team building sessions are also available. 16447 N. 91st St. 480-502-9777 azontherocks.com

Surrounded by the lush Sonoran desert, Scottsdale is a veritable playground for the outdoor and adventure enthusiast. Hikers and bikers of all experience levels can enjoy the rugged yet serene landscape of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, 14,000 acres of preserved land dotted with majestic saguaro cacti and lush native plants. Filled with a diverse variety of wildlife, desert lovers will also be treated to welcome sightings of wild creatures, from quail and jackrabbits to desert amphibians and birds. For the adventure seeker, local outfitters offer hiking, rock climbing and repelling tours that will take them to the limit. But for the extreme adventurer, there’s no better way to explore the Sonoran desert than on an H1 Hummer. Desert Storm Hummer Tours give guests an up-close-and-personal look at the Sonoran desert through unique tours that four-wheel their way across the desert landscape. An experienced guide points out and describes the local plant life and wildlife, and leads a hands-on presentation starring, depending on the time of year, rattlesnakes, scorpions and tarantulas. To give visitors more insight into the desert surroundings, the Desert Discovery Center is in the works. Located in the preserve, the center will offer exhibits and environmental experiences on the upper Sonoran desert.

QUICK TIPS OS

Table Talk

Looking for a change of pace in fine dining? Take a gamble at Orange Sky Restaurant. Located on the 15th floor of the new Talking Stick Resort, the restaurant offers a gourmet menu served with a world-class selection of wines. With sweeping views of the McDowell Mountains, fine dining has been elevated to a whole new experience. 9800 E. Indian Bend Rd. 480-850-7777 talkingstickresort.com

With its world-class resorts

, you don’t have to go far to get a taste of the most exquisite dishes prepared by the most masterful chefs in the world. There’s no question that Scottsdale is home to luxury destinations that house restaurants lauded with awards and titles from the leading culinary experts. The real question is which one to choose from. Under the direction of Jean-Georges Vongerichten, J&G Steakhouse does steak the way it was meant to be done. Rich and buttery, the six peppercorn prime New York steak is simply unmatched. And it’s not just steaks they’re known for. The milk-fed veal porterhouse and the Colorado lamb chops are not to be missed. At the Four Seasons Scottsdale, Talavera’s Clase Azul Tequila dinner is in a class by itself. Get a true taste of the desert Southwest with this four-course feast featuring jumbo prawns with carnitas, cilantro and tomatillo, and a chocolate tamale served with cherry and horchata. At the Fairmont Scottsdale, the renewed and revamped La Hacienda by Richard Sandoval promises delectable and indulgent Mexican cuisine prepared with timeless European techniques.

Tailor Made For a meal made just for you, stop by Posh, a unique restaurant serving a unique concept called “improvisational cuisine.” Here’s how it works: Given a list of ingredients, diners are asked to cross off items they dislike. Posh’s chefs then create a customized dish with the remaining items, giving you a four-course meal—beginning with soup or salad and ending with cheese course or dessert—

Sushi for dessert? For a sweet twist on this mostly seafood nosh, try Geisha a Go Go’s Rice Crispy Treat Roll, featuring cookies-and-cream ice cream with a crunchy coating of crisped rice. Served with your choice of chocolate or caramel sauce.

Don’t let the flaming displays outside fool you. What’s going on inside is oh-so cool. For unique sushi offerings, try the signature Red Tiger Roll, featuring shrimp tempura, crab tempura, avocado and salmon topped with spicy tuna.

The Biltmore’s newest hot spot brings innovative sushi items to the table. For those with a hearty appetite, try the Hwe Do Bop sushi plate, featuring assorted fresh fish, petite spring mix and a spicy sweet Korean pepper paste sauce.

Voted one of the top 10 sushi spots in the country by Bon Appetit, Roka Akor is described as “glitzy” and “global” with its unconventional sushi and robatayaki offerings. Try the 11-course prix fixe menu, which offers raw and grilled items. 7299 N. Scottsdale Rd. 480-306-8800 rokaakor.com

NIGHTLIFE

Groove On Primebar

Dance the night away at Scottsdale’s nightclubs

QUICK TIPS There’s a new bar in town, one that has Scottsdale buzzing. Located at the Scottsdale Quarter, Primebar is chic and sophisticated, and draws the supper-and-nightclub set that are looking for a place to sip, dine and dance the night away. It’s a night in Scottsdale the way it’s meant to be. 15037 N. Scottsdale Rd. 480-822-6200

On the Edge If you like your drinks served with a view, head over to The Pour at the Sanctuary on Camelback. Served at Jade Bar and Edge, the resort’s trendsetting outdoor bar, the upscale happy hour features premium cocktails and wines, and stunning views on Camelback Mountain. 5700 E. McDonald Dr. 480-948-2100

Because “happy hour” never ends in Scottsdale, Roaring Fork is offering discounts on cocktails, beers and appetizers from 4 to 11 p.m. through the end of September. Sip on a citrus mojito or sweet tea vodka (or both!) while noshing on fried avocado and crab or fresh guacamole. 4800 N. Scottsdale Rd. 480-947-0795

If you’re looking to get your dance on, Scottsdale has a number of places that will get you moving. Shake your thing at the Shaker Room at Martini Ranch. Described as a “club within a club,” the Shaker is on the top floor of the club and features drinks, DJs, private VIP booths and a place for the young Scottsdale set to shake their money makers. Next stop: Suede. Right in the heart of Old Town, this hotspot most definitely lives up to its name. Featuring two large bars and a regularlypacked dance floor, Suede is smooth, sultry and attracts an upscale crowd looking to dance, sip and lounge in a setting that looks as cool as they do. At Dirty Pretty Rockbar, celebrity sightings are the order of the day (Travis Barker is a fan), as is the eclectic selection of music ranging from classic rock to British new wave. There may be no other place in town where you can head bang to AC/DC one minute, and dance it out to the poppin’ beats of Snoop Dogg the next. End the night with a stop at Axis Radius, two of Scottsdale’s most popular clubs joined by a glass catwalk. An icon in Scottsdale’s nightlife scene, the club comes complete with cigar bar and VIP lounge. If your’re wanting to see and be seen in Scottsdale, this is the place to be.
