First Fridays
Just because summer’s winding down
doesn’t mean the fun is coming to an end. In fact, fall is the perfect time to experience all the amazing and, let’s be honest here, enviable places downtown is known for. From arts and sports to shopping and dining, the area comes alive this time of year, giving entertainment hounds a wide range of options. From Torch Theatre to Civic Space Park, there’s an array of destinations that have established downtown as the mecca for artistic and cultural events in the Valley. Whether you’re looking to enjoy an awe-inspiring stage performance or see the innovative works of international artists, you’ll find something to quench your thirst for cultural experiences. If your idea of entertainment is delicious food, great drinks and perhaps an evening of upscale bowling (yes, bowling), check out CityScape, downtown’s new entertainment district. After breaking ground three years ago, the development has taken shape and recently welcomed its first tenants, including Lucky Strike Lanes, a high-end bowling venue complete with VIP lounge and private lanes. This fall is also an exciting time for downtown, as the Phoenix Suns kick off yet another exciting season of high-energy basketball at the US Airways Center. From team favorites Steve Nash and Grant Hill to a roster of fresh talent including Goran Drajic and Channing Frye, the Suns have their sights set on bringing home the trophy of the NBA Finals. 7GSXXWHEPI In this issue of You Are Here: Central Phoenix, discover the great things to do, see and experience throughout downtown and central Phoenix. From high-octane sports action, to renowned art exhibits and stage performances, to casual live music concerts, downtown offers a cultural experience like no other.

Fans can also satisfy their competitive fix with arena football, motocross races, monster truck rallies and boxing matches held at locations throughout downtown. With all this action so close by, who needs to play armchair quarterback?

get you to your favorite downtown event in no time at all. Giving commuters quick and easy access to the city’s top cultural and entertainment hubs, METRO light rail has become an integral part of the downtown landscape. The central Phoenix and downtown routes run from Camelback and Seventh Avenue to Third Street and Jefferson. Along the way, riders have access to some of the Valley’s most significant destinations, as well as downtown’s most celebrated venues. Interested in expanding your creative horizons? Climb aboard and stop at any of downtown’s amazing art galleries and spaces. In the mood to be entertained with a good theater show? Stop and catch a stunning performance by the opera, symphony or host of downtown theater companies. Interested in spending the day at any one of downtown’s cultural events and festivals? Ride the rail to such neighborhood favorites as the Melrose Crawl or Grand Avenue Festival, where you’ll get a real taste of urban living. Thanks to the rail, downtown’s cultural possibilities have become endless. 1st Ave. / Jefferson station
Rail Talk: METRO Rewards Can Pay Off In case you haven’t noticed by now, the light rail isn’t only a way to get from Point A to Point B, it’s also a doorway to an amazing array of businesses along the downtown line. If you’re a regular rider—and trust us, you’ll want to become one after you read this—sign up for the METRO Max Rewards program, which offers discounts, contests, giveaways and special event previews from businesses within a half-mile of the line. From free beverages to VIP passes, it pays to ride the line.

You Are Here Fall 2010
A permanent fixture on
the downtown nightlife scene, local DJs are mixing it up and getting club hoppers grooving all night long. Nightclubs have them. So do restaurants. There’s even a coffee bar that has one. All over downtown, you’ll find DJs spinning tunes, busting out beats and creating a cool vibe that raises the hip factor. From the industrial beats at Club Palazzo to the cool dance mixes at Bar Smith, you’re sure to find the right mix to get your groove on. For something completely unique and unconventional, check out Hot Fudge Sundaze at the Clarendon Hotel, where DJ William Reed and Sean Watson turn the hip rooftop bar into a cool and laid-back hangout filled with a mix of reggae, lounge, soul and indie electro pop. You’ll never look at Sunday afternoons the same way again. At the Rose and Crown’s Saturday night Royal Filth, patrons can dance to the beats of DJs Pantyfish and Young Marlon Brando, surrounded by funky paintings of the UK’s The Clash and Queen Elizabeth. 1
