Going Strong Downtown “all-stars shine bright through city’s revival Getting Here Central Phoenix is roughly bounded by Glendale Avenue (north), Buchanan Street (south), 15th Avenue (west) and 16th Street (east). South of the I-10 is designated as Downtown, while north is called Uptown.

By Bus

Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes and schedules, visit valleymetro.org.

Over a large part of its revitalization, downtown has seen it all: streets tangled with the constant snarl of construction, a landscape defined not by skyscrapers but by the steel cranes that build them, and a host of small businesses struggling to be a part of it all. In what started as a sleepy desert town, Phoenix has rapidly grown over the years to become the fifth largest city in the country. But compared to other metropolitan areas, the city is still in its infancy. It continues to develop and evolve, discovering and defining its identity. What downtown has accomplished in the past 20 years alone is staggering: it is now the home of four professional sports teams, seen explosive growth in its thriving arts community, fostered the revitalization of the city’s most historic neighborhoods and become a center for innovative medical research and higher education. Downtown is also becoming recognized as a place to call home. From working professionals and young families to empty nesters and Valley newcomers, people are finding downtown a desirable place to live thanks to the recent boom of highrise housing developments. And with the recent renovation of the Phoenix Convention Center and launch of the METRO light rail system, downtown will only continue to grow and thrive, making it a top destination for entertainment, arts, culture, shopping and dining. In this issue of You Are Here, we’ll celebrate the old and new, recognizing the 7GSXXWHEPI city’s most long-standing businesses, +PIRHEPI venues and organizations that have weathered the storms of downtown’s 4EVEHMWI :EPPI] 'IRXVEP revitalization. Through all its highs and 4LSIRM\ lows, change is here and downtown is finally reaping the rewards.

Downtown purists may argue that it wasn’t the arena or the ballpark that began attracting people downtown. Rather, many say it was the work of this volunteer-run arts organization that truly put Phoenix on the cultural map. With Art Detour and First Fridays, (its signature events,) Artlink has created an artistic revival that has breathed new life into our urban core.

202 N. Central Ave. Completed in 1928, the building was one of the first hotels to have elevators and air conditioning. It was a favorite destination for Hollywood celebrities.

618 N. Central Ave. The 400-room hotel opened in 1928 and has had such famous guests as Elizabeth Taylor and the King of Nepal. It also appeared in the 1998 remake of Psycho.

Stroll along downtown’s streets and you’re sure to run into an orange-clad ambassador doling out useful info on what to do and where to go. Friendly faces courtesy of this nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting downtown’s Copper Square area.

Seventh Avenue Merchants Association melroseon7th.com

Speaking of Melrose, downtown actually does have its very own.The Melrose District is a pedestrianfriendly area of shops and restaurants on Seventh Avenue just north of Indian School. Established by the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association, the group was formed in 1997 to revitalize the area that once was a successful business corridor.

Art History

As one of the oldest volunteer arts organization in the Valley, Artlink Phoenix hosts the city’s most venerable art events. In 1989, the group kicked off Art Detour, a self-guided tour of art studios, spaces and venues in downtown Phoenix that that has grown to become the city’s largest annual artwalk. But it wasn’t until five years later, when the group launched First Fridays, that downtown became a creative hub that not only sparked interest in local artists but also created a resurgence that no other urban center has seen before. As downtown’s most signature event, First Fridays features 100-plus arts venues that open their doors to the public, live entertainment and specialty vendors. And as the event grew, so did a handful of art spaces whose names are now synonymous with the downtown art scene including Modified Arts, MonOrchid and Eye Lounge.Another cultural center that has put downtown on the map is historic Heritage Square. Filled with museums old and new, this unique destination tucked amidst the city’s skyscrapers is a testament to where downtown began and where it’s going. 1 515 ARTS

With some businesses starting as far back as the early 1900s, downtown has seen its share of small, family-owned shops that have been dedicated to two things: a great product and outstanding customer service. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Stinkweeds, downtown’s most popular record exchange. Open since 1987, this music treasure offers the best in imports and independent labels. Then there’s All About Comics. For more than 25 years, this downtown staple has been offering new and back issue comics as well as cool toys for the superhero in all of us. Opened in 1928, the Hotel San Carlos was a favorite destination for Hollywood celebs including Marilyn Monroe and Clarke Gable. During Mae West’s stay, it was reported she requested not to be woken until 3 p.m. and with a bottle of champagne.

In the retail world, it’s all about branching out and making more. Sure, there’s something to be said of American capitalism at work, but it’s the independent spirit that’s kept long-time retailers going strong during the long road to downtown’s resurgence.

First there was America West Arena where the NBA’s Phoenix Suns played their way into the hearts of the Valley’s most die-hard basketball fans. Now the US Airways Center, the arena is also home to the Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Rattlers and Phoenix Roadrunners. Then came Chase Field (originally Bank One Ballpark) and since then, baseball has run rampant all over the Valley. With a World Series Championship title under their belt, the Arizona Diamondbacks have not only brought America’s favorite pastime to Phoenix, but has also breathed new life into downtown. In coming months, the 2009 Diamondbacks baseball season gets into gear, welcoming throngs of fans to the city’s center who will all enjoy a delicious hot dog, a cold beer and an exciting day out at the ballpark.

If you think the NBA All-Star Game is just basketball game, well, you don’t know the NBA. Sure there’s a game but it’s the special events leading up to the tip off—such as the three-point shootout and the slam-dunk contest—that make this one of the league’s most exciting events. Check out the action Feb. 12-16.

Ride Times

With all the bells and whistles of its inaugural ride behind us, METRO light rail has eased its way onto downtown streets, giving commuters quick and easy access to the city’s top business, cultural and entertainment hubs. Launched in December, METRO light rail has been the most anticipated and exciting thing to happen to the Valley since the Arizona Diamondbacks paraded the World Series Championship trophy through the streets of downtown in 2001. The 20-mile route runs from Mesa to Tempe to downtown Phoenix, with an available route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Along the way, riders have access to some of the Valley’s most significant destinations, as well as downtown’s most celebrated venues. Interested in expanding your creative horizons? Climb aboard and stop at any of downtown’s amazing art galleries and spaces. Craving innovative dishes from the Valley’s rising chefs? One ride and you’ll be able to sink your teeth into everything from a juicy steak to piping hot pizza. In the mood to be entertained with a good theater show? Stop and catch a stunning performance by the opera, symphony or host of downtown theater troupes. Downtown’s possibilities have become endless thanks to the METRO light rail, which runs 365 days a year at fares ranging from $45 a month to $1.25 per ride. Now that’s driving a hard bargain if there ever was one.

How many times have you ridden the rail thinking to yourself, “How cool would it be if there was a live band playing right here, right now on this very train?” You can stop wondering because that time is now. Starting Feb. 6, live music comes your way on the light rail with Train Tracks, an innovative music project featuring uncut performances by local artists. Check out thetraintracks.org for more info.

Dining

Taste of History

Downtown faves keep dishing up good eats QUICK TIPS 41

Power Lunch

Working, lunch and meeting are perhaps the three most dreaded words in business. Thankfully, Downtown Deli caters heaping platters of delicious sandwiches that’ll make the mind-numbing assembly almost worth it. 130 N. Central Ave. 602-258-3069 42 Soda Jerk One step into MacAlpine’s Restaurant and you’ll immediately feel sensory overload. That’s because the place is packed floor to ceiling with vintage knick knacks collected since it opened in 1928.Take the edge off with a frosty milkshake or egg cream. 2303 N. 7th St. 602-262-5545

One of the most recognized downtown restaurants is Durant’s, a Central Avenue landmark since it opened in 1950. Sink your teeth into a juicy T-bone steak and sip on the perfect martini. You’ll feel like Dean, Frank and Sammy are sitting in the red leather booth right next to you! Another great downtown standby is Pizzeria Bianco. Owned by celebrated chef Chris Bianco, this popular spot is young by comparison to downtown’s other historic eateries. But what it lacks in tenure, it more than makes up for in popularity. Here, patrons arrive hours before opening to line up for Bianco’s renowned pizza that even caught Oprah’s attention. And just down the way is the Teeter House at Heritage Square, where owner Lynne Behringer serves up old-fashioned fare in this 100-year-old Victorian home. 1 Aiello’s

There’s something to be said about Southern hospitality. Don’t have the cash? Mrs. White’s has been known to use the honor system with their regulars. 808 E. Jefferson St. 602-262-9256

At Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café, it’s about as no frills as you can get. Opened in 1929,Tom’s was originally located in the city morgue, which was converted into a burger joint, gin mill and private pool room, a favorite with polticians and officials. 1 Renaissance Square 602-257-1688

You may not see Paris Hilton inhaling a chili cheeseburger at Tom’s Tavern, but you’ll surely spot local politicians wheeling and dealing over the daily blue plate special. Even George Dubya and Laura dined there, having lunch with then Governor Jane Hull during a campaign stop in Phoenix.

South of the border Got a hankering for something cheesy delicious? Dine at these downtown eateries that have been serving up authentic Mexican dishes for years:

Matador Restaurant 125 E. Adams St. 602-254-7563

Owned by the Anagnopoulos family for 25 years, Matador is a favorite among the downtown business lunch set. In addition to traditional Mexican favorites, the restaurant offers up a Greek “taco,” served gyro-style with lamb or beef in fresh pita bread. 47

There are some restaurants worth waiting in line for. When it comes to Mexican food, Carolina’s is just that place. From tacos to tostadas, this place has it all but it’s the tortillas that have people coming from miles around.Thin, light and flaky, they’re simply heavenly.

A Phoenix tradition, Los Dos is known for turning up the heat with its wonderfully spicy selections. Chef Victoria uses New Mexican red chiles and Hatch Valley green chiles in such house specialties as the relleno dinner and the adovada ribs.

At Tradiciones, you’ll feel like you’ve landed smack dab in a charming hacienda in a quaint Mexican town. Here, waitresses in ruffled tops serve up authentic dishes as strolling mariachi in traditional dress entertain you.

Barrio Café brings together fine food and art in a cozy setting. Chef Silvana Salcido Esparaza creates an innovative menu of southern Mexican cuisine that has become a favorite among downtowners since it opened in 2002.

Macayo’s has been a Valley Phoenix tradition since 1946 when Woody Johnson opened El Nido on McDowell Road. Six years later, the original Macayo’s opened on Central Avenue, where it still stands today.

Eliza Teeter, who bought the home in 1911, is said to have died in the home in 1965. Since then, pictures flying off the walls and unexplained noises have been reported. 622 E. Adams 602-252-4682

The pomp and circumstance of the Victorian era is alive and well at the Teeter House, a charming, turn-of-the-century tea room offering American and Italian cuisine. Stop by for high tea or Teeter Evenings, where you can enjoy sips, snacks and live song.

Kick it old school at downtown nightclubs QUICK TIPS 11 By, George! Who would’ve thunk it? A bunch of Brits at the George & Dragon have created a margarita that gives even the most authentic Mexican bar a run for its money. The Cadillac is loaded with Grand Marnier and Cuervo Gold. Cheers to international relations! 4240 N. Central Ave. 602-241-0018 1

I Heart M&Ms

No we’re not talking about multi-colored chocolatey treats. It’s even better. Head into Amsterdam for their popular Martinis & Manicures, where you can get a good polish while polishing off a tasty drink. 18 N. Central Ave. 602-258-6122 21

jazz club that has had a faithful following since opening in 1963. Last year, Chez Nous moved into a new location on Grand Avenue after its original location closed due to urban development. Although the building was demolished, owner Amina Uben saved a few original items that have found their way into the new location. If you’re feeling a little blue, head over to Char’s Has the Blues near 7th Avenue and Camelback. Opened for more than 20 years, this downtown favorite features live blues entertainment every night. At the Rhythm Room, blues, jazz and roots acts do what they do best. For something more laid back, the Bikini Lounge, Phoenix’s legendary tiki room, offers up strong drinks served by one of the best bartenders in town. No wonder she’s got the drill down pat.Westley Nieto has been working at the lounge for more than 20 years. 1 AMSTERDAM

What’s a boxty, you say? A potato-based pancake served with soda bread and margarine, this Galway favorite goes best with corned beef and a pint of Irish ale. 18 W. Monroe 602-253-6081

Come March, the Guinness will be overflowing at Seamus McCaffrey’s, downtown’s original Irish pub. This downtown tavern has hosted its share of St. Paddy’s Day parties since it opened 17 years ago, serving up Irish ales, whiskey and malts, giving Phoenix its own little pot o’ gold.
