Over a large part of its revitalization, downtown has seen it all: streets tangled with the constant snarl of construction, a landscape defined not by skyscrapers but by the steel cranes that build them, and a host of small businesses struggling to be a part of it all. In what started as a sleepy desert town, Phoenix has rapidly grown over the years to become the fifth largest city in the country. But compared to other metropolitan areas, the city is still in its infancy. It continues to develop and evolve, discovering and defining its identity. What downtown has accomplished in the past 20 years alone is staggering: it is now the home of four professional sports teams, seen explosive growth in its thriving arts community, fostered the revitalization of the city’s most historic neighborhoods and become a center for innovative medical research and higher education. Downtown is also becoming recognized as a place to call home. From working professionals and young families to empty nesters and Valley newcomers, people are finding downtown a desirable place to live thanks to the recent boom of highrise housing developments. And with the recent renovation of the Phoenix Convention Center and launch of the METRO light rail system, downtown will only continue to grow and thrive, making it a top destination for entertainment, arts, culture, shopping and dining. Hotel Westward Ho
Downtown purists may argue that it wasn’t the arena or the ballpark that began attracting people downtown. Rather, many say it was the work of this volunteer-run arts organization that truly put Phoenix on the cultural map. With Art Detour and First Fridays, (its signature events,) Artlink has created an artistic revival that has breathed new life into our urban core.
202 N. Central Ave. Completed in 1928, the building was one of the first hotels to have elevators and air conditioning. It was a favorite destination for Hollywood celebrities.
618 N. Central Ave. The 400-room hotel opened in 1928 and has had such famous guests as Elizabeth Taylor and the King of Nepal. It also appeared in the 1998 remake of Psycho.
Luhrs Tower
45 W. Jefferson St. The tallest building in Arizona at the time of its construction in 1929, it was built by George Luhrs, a prominent Phoenix businessman.
Rosson House
6th St. and Van Buren Located at Historic Heritage Square, this 1895 Victorian home shows what life was like in Arizona’s late territorial times.

As one of the oldest volunteer arts organization in the Valley, Artlink Phoenix hosts the city’s most venerable art events. In 1989, the group kicked off Art Detour, a self-guided tour of art studios, spaces and venues in downtown Phoenix that that has grown to become the city’s largest annual artwalk. But it wasn’t until five years later, when the group launched First Fridays, that downtown became a creative hub that not only sparked interest in local artists but also created a resurgence that no other urban center has seen before.As downtown’s most signature event, First Fridays features 100-plus arts venues that open their doors to the public, live entertainment and specialty vendors.And as the event grew, so did a handful of art spaces whose names are now synonymous with the downtown art scene including Modified Arts, MonOrchid and Eye Lounge.Another cultural center that has put downtown on the map is historic Heritage Square. Opened in 1928, the Hotel San Carlos was a favorite destination for Hollywood celebs including Marilyn Monroe and Clarke Gable. During Mae West’s stay, it was reported she requested not to be woken until 3 p.m. and with a bottle of champagne.
In the retail world, it’s all about branching out and making more. Sure, there’s something to be said of American capitalism at work, but it’s the independent spirit that’s kept long-time retailers going strong during the long road to downtown’s resurgence.

First there was America West Arena where the NBA’s Phoenix Suns played their way into the hearts of the Valley’s most die-hard basketball fans. Now the US Airways Center, the arena is also home to the Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Rattlers and Phoenix Roadrunners. Then came Chase Field (originally Bank One Ballpark) and since then, baseball has run rampant all over the Valley. With a World Series Championship title under their belt, the Arizona Diamondbacks have not only brought America’s favorite pastime to Phoenix, but has also breathed new life into downtown. In coming months, the 2009 Diamondbacks baseball season gets into gear, welcoming throngs of fans to the city’s center who will all enjoy a delicious hot dog, a cold beer and an exciting day out at the ballpark.

With all the bells and whistles of its inaugural ride behind us, METRO light rail has eased its way onto downtown streets, giving commuters quick and easy access to the city’s top business, cultural and entertainment hubs. Launched in December, METRO light rail has been the most anticipated and exciting thing to happen to the Valley since the Arizona Diamondbacks paraded the World Series Championship trophy through the streets of downtown in 2001. The 20-mile route runs from Mesa to Tempe to downtown Phoenix, with an available route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Along the way, riders have access to some of the Valley’s most significant destinations, as well as downtown’s most celebrated venues. Interested in expanding your creative horizons? Climb aboard and stop at any of downtown’s amazing art galleries and spaces. Craving innovative dishes from the Valley’s rising chefs? One ride and you’ll be able to sink your teeth into everything from a juicy steak to piping hot pizza. In the mood to be entertained with a good theater show? Stop and catch a stunning performance by the opera, symphony or host of downtown theater troupes. Downtown’s possibilities have become endless thanks to the METRO light rail, which runs 365 days a year at fares ranging from $45 a month to $1.25 per ride. Now that’s driving a hard bargain if there ever was one.
