First Fridays

As the mercury rises

in the Valley of the Sun, the natural instinct is to retreat to the air-conditioned comfort of one’s own home, closing up shop and hibernating like a bear until the fall. But oh, what you’d be missing. Downtown takes on a whole new dynamic and energy during the summer months. It’s a time when galleries, restaurants and bars open their doors and patios to culture-seeking patrons who enjoy an evening out on the town, no matter how steamy the night is. It’s a time when school-free kids crowd downtown’s museums and parks, relishing the relaxing freedom summer has to offer. It’s also a time when the local art scene comes alive with events almost every night of the week. And with METRO light rail zipping through city, getting to where you need to go is easier—and cooler—than ever. Whether you’re into fine art, live stage performances or delicious culinary adventures, downtown has exactly what you’re looking for. For a fun night on the town, take in dinner and a show at any of downtown’s exciting entertainment venues, such as the Orpheum, Herberger or Symphony Hall. If you’d rather throw caution to the wind and see where the night will take you, hop on the light rail and stop in for a drink—and a dance—at any one of the pubs, bars, lounges or dance clubs along the way. 7GSXXWHEPI In this issue of You Are Here: Central Phoenix, discover the great things to see and do downtown this summer. From action-packed Diamondback games at Chase Field, to blockbuster concerts and performances at US Airways and the Dodge Theatre, to the cool cultural retreats offered at the area’s diverse array of museum’s and galleries, downtown is the perfect destination to waste away those lazy days of summer.

Mahalo Mondays 4700 N. Central Ave. 602-265-8454

One man’s—or in this case woman’s—empty lot is another man’s art venue. Located in the Grand Avenue district, First Backyard is the brainchild of Jen Urso, a local artist who has transformed her backyard into performance space, art exchange and social launchpad. Watch out for monthly events filled with unique opportunities for creative expression.

There’s no question July in Phoenix is a scorcher. Thankfully, Sizzlin’ Summer Saturdays at the Heard Museum is the perfect place to keep the kiddos cool on a hot summer day. From July 3 to 31, kids can enjoy hands-on activities, scavenger hunts and goody bags, while learning about Native American culture.

There are Mondays and then there are Mahalo Mondays at Hula’s Modern Tiki. Owners Dana Mule and Chris Delaney have teamed up with local nonprofits to give downtowners a cool place to unwind on a Monday night—all for a good cause. With 10 percent of the evening’s proceeds benefiting the community, we’ll say cheers to that!

You Are Here Summer 2010

It’s a fact: There is no better time

than a sweltering summer day to enjoy Phoenix’s dynamic art scene. That’s because art lovers can take refuge at more than 100 downtown art spaces, featuring everything from mutant piñatas to floating jellyfish. What sounds better than cooling your heels under expansive skies filled with shimmering stars and unchartered planets at the Arizona Science Center? Or in the cool dimness of a movie screening at the Phoenix Art Museum? The notion that downtown becomes a ghost town once the mercury rises no longer holds true, thanks to the multitude of art offerings found throughout Children’s Museum of Phoenix the area. And, as the sun sets behind the downtown skyline, the city comes alive with special events like NU at the Heard, Melrose Crawl and, of course, the venerable First Fridays. From small neighborhood galleries to the expansive collections found at downtown’s more highprofile venues, art lovers will be able to find the perfect exhibit that not only engages them, but also makes them thankful for downtown Phoenix…even on a hot summer day. 1

Retail Revival

Unique boutiques redefine downtown shopping QUICK TIPS Perfect Pair

It was a sad day when Olive Annie, one of downtown’s favorite boutiques, closed its doors in March. Oh, what a difference a couple of months can make. The boutique, which is now named Olive in Paris, has reopened inside Paris Envy in the Melrose district. Treasure hunting is now double the fun! 4624 N. 7th Ave. 602-266-0966 39

Also joining retail forces are Butter Toast boutique and Merry May Handmade, a way-cool crafts store that offers supplies, classes and handmade goods. Designed for the true fashionista/DIY-er, you can now get vintage looks and crafting goods all under one roof. 908 N. 6th St. 602-258-3458 40

It’s a Wrap

Great at gift buying, terrible at wrapping? If so, check out Do Me a Favor, a charming little shop that offers specialty wrapping services. With unique papers, ribbons and other embellishments, your package will look so pretty, you won’t want to part with it. 835 E. Camelback Rd. 602-200-0190 12

You Are Here Summer 2010

Economic downturn?

You wouldn’t know it by the looks of downtown’s bustling retail scene. Everywhere you turn, a new boutique is setting up shop, from funky street wear to hard-to-find vintage goods. Downtown’s retail scene is experiencing a renaissance. Known for its small neighborhood shops and boutiques, the area once struggled to compete with the Valley’s outlying communities and its big box, cookie cutter shopping centers. But as the saying goes, what’s old becomes new again and that certain charm of independently owned shops has begun to define the Butter Toast area’s retail landscape. Looking for oneof-a-kind modern furniture? Downtown’s got it. How about the latest quirky selections in vinyl toys? That, too. Or what about todie-for fashions by up-and-coming designers? Come on, really? Whatever you’re looking for, there’s a good chance a downtown boutique’s got it, as well as more things that you could possibly want or need. Die-hard shoppers, beware. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 1

You Are Here Summer 2010

Ah, thank goodness

for the boys of summer. America’s favorite pastime is not lost on die-hard baseball fans despite the searing heat. That’s because in the desert, we have retractable roofs. This time of year, people come from the far reaches of the Valley to converge on downtown’s Chase Field in order to take part in a time-honored tradition (well, in Phoenix standards): Diamondbacks baseball. Popcorn, peanuts, cracker jacks, hot dogs and beer are the dietary staples of countless baseball fans who, happily munch and cheer while the Diamondbacks run, hit and slide to victory. The action continues next door at the US Airways Center, where the ladies of the 2007 and 2009 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury slug it out on the hard court—proving that basketball isn’t just for the guys. Also giving sports fans a thrill are the AFL’s Arizona Rattlers. After taking last season off, the gridiron guys Phoenix Mercury once again take strike, bringing their opponents to their knees. So whether you’re into baseball, basketball or arena football (or all three!), downtown Phoenix is the place to be this summer.Hands down, this is downtown Phoenix at its best. A

Ride Times From downtown Phoenix to: Downtown Tempe - 25 minutes Downtown Mesa - 40 minutes Phoenix Sky Harbor 15 minutes

It’s fast, it’s quick, it’s easy

and—the best part of all—it’s oh, so cool. This summer, ditch the wheels and hop on the rail for a relaxing, sweat-free ride to your favorite downtown venue. Giving commuters quick and easy access to the city’s top business, cultural and entertainment hubs, METRO light rail has comfortably settled into the downtown landscape. The 20-mile route runs from Mesa to Tempe to downtown Phoenix, with an available route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Along the way, riders have access to some of the Valley’s most significant destinations, as well as downtown’s most celebrated venues. Interested in expanding your creative horizons? Climb aboard and stop at any of downtown’s amazing art galleries and spaces. Craving innovative dishes from the Valley’s rising chefs? One ride and you’ll be able to sink your teeth into everything from a juicy steak to piping hot pizza. In the mood to be entertained with a good theater show? Stop and catch a stunning performance by the opera, symphony or host of downtown theater troupes. Downtown’s possibilities have become endless thanks to the METRO light rail, which runs 365 days a year at fares ranging from $55 a month to $1.75 per “Landmark,” Central and Camelback ride. Now that’s driving a hard bargain.

Rail Talk: What’s new on the line Since opening for service nearly two years ago, METRO light rail has not only become a means to get around downtown, but also a “vehicle” for art and expression. Each of the stations serving central and downtown Phoenix boasts its own unique public art piece that serves to engage, transform and, simply, make the ride that more enjoyable. So the next time you board the rail, stop for a moment, look around and prepare to be inspired.

It seems like they’re

everywhere. Neighborhood restaurants offering well-thought dishes made with fresh ingredients are popping up throughout urban landscape, making downtown a true dining destination. In recent months, the downtown dining scene has exploded with the addition of a number of new restaurants from some of the Valley’s top chefs, who are suddenly realizing downtown is not only a hotspot for arts and culture, but also for top-notch cuisine. No other area has seen such a resurgence in dining than the neighborhoods south of Roosevelt, west Crust of Central. From Wade Moises to Johnny Chu, acclaimed chefs have opened up shop in this quaint arts district, where they’re taking that independent and free spirit that downtown is known for and translating into good, simple food. This summer, get out of the heat (and the kitchen) and get a taste of the exciting culinary adventures downtown has to offer.

In the Mex Sure, downtown has its share of Mexican eateries, but the one making the buzz right now is Verde. Housed in a renovated 1930s building, the restaurant—which appropriately opened on Cinco de Mayo—offers organic takes on familiar Mexican dishes such as red chile beef, green chile pork and potato estofadas. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this spot is sure to become a downtown favorite.

Happy Hour

Get your drink on at downtown bars QUICK TIPS 7 24

That’s Hot

If you like things steamy, get yourself to Bar Smith’s Solstice Saturdays where the rooftop dance floor will be hopping with DJs spinning the latest grooves from house to hip hop. The best part? There’s no cover before 10 p.m. 130 E. Washington St. 602-229-1266 25

Laugh Lounge

12 for a new downtown Looking hotspot to see and be seen? Then check out Ghost Lounge at the Hotel San Carlos. The antique-style lounge and bar serves up live music and happy hour drink specials, as well as LOL Saturdays featuring the Valley’s funniest live comedy acts. 202 N. Central Ave. 602-253-4121

If you subscribe to the

notion that it’s always happy hour somewhere, then downtown is the place for you. With countless bars and nightclubs offering their own mix of specialty drinks and cocktails, you’ll always know where the party is. Whether you like your bar scene cool and cozy and or energy-fueled and a little bit frenzied, downtown’s got it all, from intimate neighborhood pubs and wine bars to high-octane nightclubs and dance spots. But perhaps it’s the diversity of these bars that make downtown’s bar scene so unique. In the mood for a good SideBar old fashioned cocktail? Pull up a seat at SideBar, where master mixologists serve up their take on the classics, including the SideBar Collins, Lynwood Palmer or the Long Island Iced Tea. If sake is more your speed, check out Sens Asian Tapas & Sake Bar, which has a comprehensive sake menu and offers several types of infused shochu, a distilled liquor made from rice, barley or sweet potatoes. Whatever you’re into, there’s one thing certain: the drinks are always flowing. 1
