By Bus

Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes and schedules, visit valleymetro.org.

Whether you’ve lived here for 10 months or 10 years, you know that getting around the city isn’t as simple as it looks. Sure our grid-like structure seems easy enough to navigate, but that simplicity doesn’t ease the astounding number of people moving to and visiting the Valley. Thankfully, all that is about to change‌ ‌because METRO light rail is finally here. For three long years, downtown Phoenix has experienced the trials and tribulations of light rail construction since the project broke ground in February 2005. But downtowners are a hearty bunch — they persevered and now comes the payoff, particularly in knowing that a simple train ride can land you on the doorsteps of downtown’s most significant venues and destinations. From the Steele Indian School Park all the way to Chase Field, passengers will be able to see extraordinary art at the Phoenix Art Museum, peruse the stacks at Burton Barr Central Library, catch a game at US Airways Center or find out how much fun science can be at the Arizona Science Center. Thanks to light rail, Valley residents and tourists alike will discover a downtown Phoenix they’ve never known before — one that is vibrant, sophisticated, cultural, hip, 7GSXXWHEPI creative and full of energy and life. In +PIRHEPI this special light rail issue of You Are Here: Central Phoenix, you’ll find out 4EVEHMWI :EPPI] 'IRXVEP everything you need to know about 4LSIRM\ the Valley’s newest and most exciting mode of transportation from how to 8IQTI ride to where it gets you.

Art in the City

Public art shines spotlight on downtown QUICK TIPS 1 Artistic Mavens This winter, Five 15 Arts will be showcasing the works of three innovative female artists, each a force in their respective mediums. Exhibits include sculptor Deborah Hodder in November, photographer Angela Franks Wells in December and painter Laura Spalding in January. 515 E. Roosevelt 515arts.com

6 Shine On The Art of Light Gallery recently opened, illuminating downtown’s art scene with creative works from local artists. The gallery also serves as a lighting store and specializes in lighting design. 906 N. 6th St. 602-252-0375

Earlier this year, two significant public art pieces were unveiled at the grand opening of the Phoenix Madison Square Garden Museum. Located at Seventh Avenue and Van Buren, the museum celebrates the historic indoor arena named for the famous venue in New York City. The Opponents, two nine-foot bronze figures, and The Phoenix, a sustainable 28-foot rammed earth monument, now grace the museum entrance. A few miles away at the newly renovated Phoenix Convention Center, a sculpture by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois is garnering national attention. At 90 feet tall, a mirror made of polished steel rises into the atrium as an intricate spider web pattern gives viewers a changing perspective of the sculpture and its surroundings. Entitled Art is a Guaranty of Sanity, the sculpture has become a popular feature at the center. 1 515 ARTS

On the Run

Downtown hosts marathons with a mission QUICK TIPS Project Green Because a vibrant city is nothing without a beautiful landscape, the Phoenix Urban Forestry department offers a program that pays for half the cost of planting a tree on public property. You can also donate a tree parks in honor of a special person or event. 602-495-3763 phoenix.gov/ forestry/#urban

With summer well behind us, it’s finally time for us to get out of heat hibernation and start moving. And what better way to stir the couch potato in all of us than a charity run or walk? There’s nothing like getting the heart rate going and the lungs really pumping, especially for a good cause. In October, downtown hosted the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Held at the State Capitol, this year’s event raised more than $530,00 to help fight breast cancer. In November, the 33rd Annual Phoenix 10K returns to Wesley Bolin Memorial Park. Attracting runners from all over the world, this race features a 10K — that’s 6.2 miles to us running novices — competitive run. Also coming up is the mother of all running races in the Valley: the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon. Last year’s race saw 6,499 finishers with first place going to New Zealander Mike Aish who finished in two hours, 13 minutes and 21 seconds. Now beat that!

In Balance As anyone who’s into it can tell you, yoga’s a great stress reliever. For your Zen moment, check out these downtown studios:

Knock Out

In boxing, the new guys are just as fun to watch as the pros. Catch the amateur action at the gym’s special event bouts scheduled throughout the year. 1755 W. Van Buren St. 602-254-0995

Mike Tyson was a regular. So was Julio Cesar Chavez. But the Central Boxing Gym located at 18th Avenue and Van Buren isn’t reserved just for heavy hitters. Open to everyone from kids to seniors, the gym offers exercise routines designed to keep you in tip-top shape and, let’s face it, to throw a punch if you ever need to.

Event Parking Arriving early, knowing that you’ll spend $10 - $15 on a space for your car and consenting to a bit of a walk will make parking in CenPho a delight - if that’s possible.

From downtown Phoenix to: Downtown Tempe - 23 minutes Downtown Mesa - 37 minutes Phoenix Sky Harbor 14 minutes

Once the trains start rolling, light rail will be the place to be in downtown Phoenix. But before you climb aboard, be sure to know the ins and outs of riding the rails. It looks easy enough. You jump on at one station and jump off at the next. But riding the new METRO light rail involves a bit more than that. The first thing you’ll need is a ticket. Fares range from $1.25 for a one-ride pass to $45 for a 31-day pass. Single tickets can be purchased at the train stations while passes are available through Valley METRO. And since nothing is more certain than taxes and death, these fares are subject to change. The next thing to know is when the trains run. On weekdays, trains run from 4:40 a.m. to 11 p.m., while on weekends and holidays, they run from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. And with trains operating 365 days a year, you won’t be left stranded. The last thing to know about light rail is exactly where it will take you. The 20-mile route runs from Mesa to Tempe to downtown Phoenix, with an available route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. There are 28 stations along the way, complete with benches, shade structures, drinking fountains, emergency call boxes and fare vending machines. And if you’re looking to be artistically inspired on your journey, enjoy the public art works installed at every station. And that’s it in a nutshell. All that’s left is to climb on, sit back and enjoy the ride. 23

Get on Track Stretching 20 miles, METRO light rail will run through Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix. Park, bike or walk and ride, stopping at key points and landmarks in the Valley. Visit valleymetro.org for more information.

Ripe Time

Enjoy smooth vintages in urban settings QUICK TIPS 40 Shell Game If you’re nuts about nuts, head to the Downtown Phoenix Public Market where Summer Place Pecan Farm has joined the market’s list of delicious vendors, bringing fresh baked pecan goodies. 721 N. Case in point: Cheuvront Restaurant and Wine Bar. Nothing is more unique than enjoying your favorite vintage out on the patio, surrounded by glimmering skyscrapers while hum of the light rail whizzes by. It doesn’t get anymore urban than that. Diners at Portland’s just down the street will enjoy the same sights and sounds while noshing on locally grown fare and sipping on boutique wines. Housed in a restored bungalow that was once the Ye Old Sandwich Shop, Lisa G Café and Wine Bar (pictured) will make you feel like you’re enjoying good food and great wine in the comfort of your own home. If no Italian meal is complete without a little vino, Cibo is the place for you. Enjoy pies, pastas and signature Italian wines at this ultra chic downtown wine bar.

Some may say wine bars are a dime a dozen in this town. Perhaps. But the key to a great wine bar is serving unique varieties in an equally unique setting. Fortunately, downtown wine bars are doing just that.

Home Grown

If the food at the District has a distinctly local taste, that’s because it uses Arizona food purveyors including the Farm at South Mountain and DesertSweet Shrimp. 320 N. 3rd St. 602-817-5400

District: American Kitchen and Wine Bar at the new Sheraton Downtown Phoenix is taking its name quite literally. At this modern lounge, you won’t find tacos or pastas. Rather, the restaurant stays true to its moniker and only serves up American staples such mac ‘n cheese, BLTs and chicken potpie — all with a sophisticated twist.

Sign of the Times

Opened since 1949, Cheese ‘n Stuff stays true to its historic past with its original globe-shaped sign. It’s a delicious blast from the past. 5042 N. Central Ave. 602-266-3636

There are sandwiches and then there are sandwiches. But to be named one of America’s best by Esquire magazine puts you in a class by yourself. Cheese ‘n Stuff, located at Central just north of Camelback, was recognized for The Tyler, made with Boar’s Head turkey, Muenster, tomatoes, hot peppers, avocado and deli mustard.

The perfect place for the power lunch, Durant’s is where Phoenix’s movers and shakers go to press the flesh and seal the deal over such classics as sautéed chicken livers, oysters Rockefeller and a juicy Porterhouse steak.

Affectionately known as “the Duck,” this Phoenix staple has been serving up fresh sandwiches, salads and soups since 1972. It’s most famous for the “nooner,” a lunch menu filled with its signature sandwiches.

Bangers and mash, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie. Classic English favorites are served up with a side of that saucy British spirit at this Central Avenue landmark. You can even kick back with a pint while you watch football on the telly.

If you enjoy a little kick in your meal,Wild Thaiger may be just the ticket. Fresh Thai cuisine is the order of the day here, where you can enjoy hot pots, curries and, of course, Pad Thai.

All About Sports Couldn’t score tickets to the big game? Catch the action at these downtown sports bars: 23

This is the time of year that club hoppers all across the country have their sights set on the nightlife scene in Phoenix. With dreamy sunsets leading into cool, clear nights, downtown’s rooftop bars are the perfect place to groove the night away. One of the swankiest rooftop bars in Phoenix belongs to Bar Smith, known for its great lineup of DJs who seriously mix it up. With high rises acting as cool backdrops to projected graphics and films, this downtown hotspot is all about big city vibe. At the historic Hotel San Carlos, the rooftop bar is actually a rooftop pool. The party, nonetheless, continues. With a couple of bar stations set up, revelers can still enjoy the night away and, if things get a little steamy, cool off with a dip in the water. The newest addition to the rooftop scene is the Top of the C at the Clarendon Hotel. Straight from a scene in Sex and the City, barflies can sip on Cosmos while perched comfortably on the hotel’s plush red couches, inconspicuously showing off their Manolo Blahniks.
