POEM BY LADY RUBY BUTE
Memories
Oh precious memories of toiling the land and picking the salt. The morning breeze playing in the trees. Walking the winding tracks to milk the cows, churning the cream, the butter so rich everything is tasty and fresh. Over there under the tamon tree, they are corning the fish and the meat for the feast. Wilks, crabs and big shrimps, what a catch! Put the pot on the fire, wash yo foot and come! Moon light shining bright tonight we gon dance and dance to the drums, fiddle and flute. Rise up with the smoke from Tonton Butty’s pipe. Get on yo foot! Let’s Dance! Memories …. Ruby Bute

blues in paradise
T
he second Nevis Blues festival will run April 14-16, 2016.
Winair flights to Nevis are the perfect way to get to this delightful island for the second edition of its blues music festival. The debut of this beachside festival made a big impact and for 2016 the organisers promise an even bigger array of international artists, drawn mostly from the UK and USA. As the festival name suggests, the music has its roots in ever-popular blues, which has inspired generations of bands, singers and guitarists across jazz, pop, soul and rock. Situated just feet from the waters edge in Oualie Bay, the Nevis Blues Festival can justifiably be called ‘Blues in Paradise.’ As the sun sets, the stage lights go up and music floats across the bay. You can enjoy a drink under the illuminated canopy of Tamarind trees, take your pick of a variety of food dishes (Caribbean and international), or splash out for a VIP experience in the Tamarind Lounge.

At the 2015 festival people came from Canada, the US, UK, Germany and even as far away as Australia. For 2016 there will be another option from western Europe. Winair has introduced flights between St Maarten and Nevis to connect with Air France direct flights to St Maarten from Paris.

Blues in Paradise
Already confirmed for the 2016 Nevis Blues Festival are Los Angeles-based guitarist Kirk Fletcher; bluesrock rising star Simon McBride (Ireland’s successor to the late great Gary Moore); Ian Siegal, the UK’s leading contemporary bluesman; and UK-based gospel/soul diva Denise Gordon, whose parents came from Nevis. Ian Siegal and Denise Gordon were stars of the first festival and are returning by popular demand. More artistes will be announced as the festival draws close.

One thing that marks out this festival is its intimacy and friendliness. It’s like being in an open-air music club. You’ll soon find yourself partying with the people standing next to you then taking a break to dip your toes in the warm Caribbean Sea, looking across to the distant lights of St Kitts.
Ian Siegal © SceneKitts
The festival site is 30 seconds walk from the water taxi jetty that links Reggae Beach in St Kitts with Nevis; or you can take the ferry from Basseterre to Charlestown and then a 15 minute shuttle bus
transfer to the festival. So, a visit from the sister island is perfectly do’able but you might want to stay over and enjoy two or three nights of the festival. There are several hotels close to the festival – the closest being Oualie Beach Resort and Mount Nevis - but none of the islands hotels or inns are more than 20 minutes away by car. Tickets to festival are US$45 per night. www.nevisbluesfestival.com

hen one starts exploring their heritage there’s no telling what they’ll find. A serious journey of exploration into the
history of a site such as the Brimstone Hill Fortress can lead one on quite an exciting ride with many unexpected twists and turns. For instance, many people perceive this massive fortress as a Gibraltar (it is actually known as “The Gibraltar of the West Indies”), standing solitary guard over St. Kitts and its waters. However, this huge citadel (hilltop) fortress was actually created to be not just a powerful individual fortification but the anchor in a chain of fortifications. Brimstone Hill represents the ultimate development of the network of fortifications erected to protect the port town of Sandy Point and its strategically vital anchorage. In addition, if the rest of St. Kitts was occupied by a hostile power and all of the other forts on the island had fallen, including Brimstone Hill’s powerful sister fortress; Charles

Fort, the Hill was intended to be the last stand. No enemy could completely control the island if they did not take Brimstone Hill. Speaking of the rest of the island, the ties between Brimstone Hill and the surrounding communities run very deep. At the Anglican churches in both St. Thomas and St. Anne Parishes can be found the tombs of several British Army officers who served at the Hill. In 1779 a large contingent of British troops were landed on St. Kitts in anticipation of a French attack. During a meeting held in August of that year the island’s Council put out a call for property owners in the Parishes of St. Anne – Sandy Point, St. Thomas – Middle Island and St. Paul – Capisterre to provide accommodations for the troops who were based at Brimstone Hill. Around the same period, the town of Old Road
Brimstone Hill May Be In Your DNA would have been of great significance to Brimstone Hill Fortress and its inhabitants. Due to the well at the base of the Hill falling into disrepair, water had to be transported to the fortress from Old Road on a weekly basis. As the road networks in Caribbean islands at the time were extremely poor, the water had to be transported by coastal schooners. Most importantly of all, the enslaved African labour used to construct the fortress, including some of the best stonemasons in the world, was sourced from several plantations in the surrounding communities. Therefore, the mortar of Brimstone Hill is firmly planted in the DNA of many Kittitians. Even if you’re from a community that’s further away from Brimstone Hill, you would be surprised at the connections you may find with the fortress. At various times, based on

heritage. The format of the book emphasizes the fascinating stories that are often left unexplored by scientific publications. Madden and Yokoyama were in the field in November doing research for their upcoming guide to the wildlife of Statia, which will be the first book of its type for the island. The authors aim to complete the wildlife guide in 2016. This project is managed by the non-profit association Les Fruits de Mer, with support from the St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation and funding from NuStar Terminals, N.V.

Statia's Wildlife - Wild Statia Ebook In addition to documenting the animals themselves, the authors are excited to learn about wildlife from the people of Statia. According to Yokoyama, "One thing that you will notice in Wild Statia is a passion for connecting natural history with human culture— the names given to animals, the stories told about them and the ways that we have impacted nature over time. If you have any information about wildlife on Statia, we'd love to hear it." Stories, info and names for Statian wildlife can be shared by sending them to info@lesfruitsdemer.com. Many of the chapters are adapted from articles in Yokoyama’s ongoing Wild Statia series in the Weekender section of The Daily Herald. The ebook can be downloaded for free at lesfruitsdemer.com or statiawildlife.com.

Those involved said the success was owed to the strong team effort and cooperation of all players: Domino's, Winair and various partners such as Coca-Cola, Antillean Liquors, teams within the airport, Nusutus, the media, and the air traffic control towers which cleared the way for one of the most spectacular take offs ever seen from St. Maarten and certainly a pizza delivery to be remembered.

March 26 - 27, 2016 The Festival del Mar is an authentic community Festival that pays tribute to the sea-faring heritage of the village of Island Harbour, offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to savour the flavours of a variety of delicacies from the sea, whilst enjoying a plethora of activities that take place in, on or around the water. Local string bands and steel pans add to the colorful, festive atmosphere as residents, young and old, compete in a series of events including crab-racing, model boat-racing, sun-fish racing and deep sea fishing. Swimming races are also held, but the highlight, of course, is the island’s beloved national sport, Boatracing. With over 20 food stalls lining the roadways and beachfront on Island Harbour, culinary delights abound, with only one stipulation: all menu items must come from the sea! Lobster, crayfish, conch, whelks, snapper, shellfish and calamari are served up in a variety of ways, with favourite sides like dumplings, conkies, fried cakes and Johnny cakes to round off the finger-licking meal. This exciting and flavourful sea festival takes place every year at the

Anguilla Yacht Regatta
May 10 – 12, 2016 In collaboration with the Anguilla Tourist Board, the Anguilla Sailing Association is proud to announce the 14th Annual Anguilla Regatta – known to be one of the best in the Caribbean. The Anguilla Regatta is famous for exciting courses and testing wind conditions, usually within the 13 – 18 knot range. Together with unpredictable wind shifts around offshore cays and marks, this makes for an exhilarating race experience. An additional unusual flavour to the Regatta is the participation of Anguilla’s local boats – a unique cultural landmark representing the history and development of this island. All this is set against Anguilla’s famous azure waters and stunning beaches. And after all the hard
work of racing, partying on the beach could not be easier, with some of Anguilla’s best restaurants and bars just a short, sandy stroll away. For more information visit www.anguillayachtregatta.com
This history is a very big part of who and what Anguilla is today, part of what makes it so special. Welches’ Fest
May 16, 2016 Held annually on Whit Monday, Anguillians come from around the island to meet on the playing field in Welches, a village in eastern Anguilla. This cultural festival depicts life as it was in earlier, harder days. Activities include traditional cooking on fire rocks, playing of traditional games, dancing in garb of olden days, and of course lots of traditional eats and drinks. Artifacts of the day range from hand made wooden toys to heavy flat irons, a household implement that Winair Inflight Magazine Vol. 4

It's all set to the sound of traditional Anguillian music, of course! Welches Fest is a celebration of Anguillian heritage, when times were tough, the island being one of the poorest in the Caribbean. People would assemble to accomplish what no single person could do (ex., building a home) through a collective community effort that was called “Jollification” - a creative and happy adaptation to limited material and financial resources. This history is a very big part of who and what Anguilla is today, part of what makes it so special. Come see, experience and participate in this reenactment of an Anguilla of yester-year.
THE ANGUILLA LIT FEST: A LITERARY JOLLIFICATION
May 19 – 22, 2016 Join readers, writers and thinkers from the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and beyond for three exciting days of inspirational workshops, illuminating seminars and dynamic presentations
with award-winning writers and celebrity authors. Set against the backdrop of Anguilla’s stunning beaches and tranquil ambiance, the Anguilla Lit Fest takes place at the Paradise Cove Resort from May 19 to 22, 2016, just in time for a pre-Memorial Day Getaway. The Festival, which was conceptualized as a celebration of Anguilla’s rich literary heritage, draws on another key facet of Anguilla’s traditions, The Jollification: just as our ancestors were able to pool together their financial, physical and human resources to maximize outputs and projects, so, too, this Festival is based upon the creation of something special when people pool together their knowledge, expertise and experiences in the pursuit of excellence in the literary arts. THE ANGUILLA SUMMER FESTIVAL
July 28 - August 7, 2016 The Anguilla Summer Festival is a typical Caribbean emancipation celebration. It has been occurring on the island for over forty years, and has its roots in the decades-old traditional August Monday fairs, Bazaars and the old time Christmas festivities, which themselves featured many African-influenced cultural expressions of island life. These activities were organized by the churches and featured wirewalkers, May pole dancers, Mockajumbies and a wide variety of games. Today’s festivities still exude the same charm and spirit of those early days of festivities, a reflection of typical contemporary Caribbean Carnivals, with a twist that is uniquely Anguillian. While visitors enjoy classic Carnival competitions, pageantry and calypso shows in the evening, the days are also filled with the excitement of the island’s national sport,

Archaeological excavation indicates that Amerindians utilised the Fountain Cavern from around A.D. 4000. Sustainability is a key element in the development of the site and at present, the Fountain Cavern itself is not accessible to the general public. Entry is permitted to the scientific and academic community via an approval process through the Anguilla National Trust or the Department of Environment. Pitch apple and fig tree roots grow down at the entry hole in the cave’s ceiling. The two-chambered limestone cave is approximately 50 m x 30 m in size. The Cavern features Amerindian rock art: petroglyphs, stalagmite statues; and archaeological deposits associated with a subterranean freshwater pool. Winair Inflight Magazine Vol. 4

Sculpture Symposium © Anguilla Tourist Board
First Anguilla Sculpture Symposium The latest addition to Anguilla’s vibrant art scene is The Anguilla Sculpture Symposium, the first of its kind to be staged in the Caribbean. Held on Anguilla from November 9th to 27th, 2015, the Symposium brought internationally renowned sculptors, Alexandra Harley, Jon Barlow Hudson, and Almuth Tebbenhoff ( all members of the Royal British Society of Sculptors), to the picturesque historical fishing village of Island Harbour where they engaged in the creation of unique public sculptures for permanent installation on Anguilla. The finished works, which were inspired by the island’s culture, history, and natural beauty, are now on display on the grounds of the Island Art Café in Island Harbour, before being moved to their permanent installations at various points around the island. Alexandra Harley's piece, called "End Polio Now", sponsored in part by the Rotary Club of Anguilla, is intended to call to people's consciousness the war valiantly waged worldwide by Rotary International to eradicate the scourge of polio. Her work is an abstract view of the vaccine at work destroying the polio virus forever. It will be installed at Anguilla's Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport in a carefully chosen site where arriving and departing passengers will be able to see it, and to view it close up if they wish.
116 ▐Winair Inflight Magazine Vol. 4
Jon Barlow Hudson's work celebrates the preColumbian peoples of Anguilla, the Arawaks. On it carefully reproduced, are images of the petroglyphs carved by the Arawaks in the Fountain Cavern, near Shoal Bay. The Cavern is closed to visitors for now, but a new Amerindian Cultural Center is being erected around the Cavern. It will have drawings, photos, and Arawak relics on display when finished. We expect Jon's work will be a welcome addition to the site, drawing attention of visitors to the Center not only because of the petroglyphs reproduced on it, but also because of the whispering seats on each side of it. Sit on one side, while a friend sits on the other, and you will be able to chat through the stone! Almuth Tebbenhoff's piece was inspired by the beautiful lips on the smiling faces that Almuth saw when she stepped off the plane in Anguilla. But it is more than that, as if that weren't enough. Some viewers see sails of Anguillian sailboats, or streamlined fish that race with the boats. Some see petals of flowers. Still others are reminded of the footprints left in the sand by seagulls. In so many ways this piece is a reflection of Island Harbour where it was created, and where we expect it will be installed. We are looking for a special site where people who come to see it can walk around it, seeing it from many angles and seeing in it all the Anguillian inspiration that moved Almuth.

Anguilla - Fashion, Festivals and so much More! Anguilla Sea Salt and Miniature Golf Course Visit Anguilla’s revolutionary sea salt company, the first of its kind on the island. Anguilla Sea Salt Company is based in Island Harbour, one of Anguilla’s oldest fishing villages. Given the rich history of the island’s salt ponds and the role of salt production as the island’s fledgling industry in the 1950’s, the owners felt it was time to revitalize the industry, but with a new strategy…the use of 100% all-natural sea salt. Many people have visited Anguilla over the years with nothing unique to take back home with them. We wanted to provide something more than the traditional T-shirt. We wanted to give visitors to the island something to remind them of their time in Anguilla as well as to provide a "taste" of our culture. Anguilla is often referred to as "Tranquility Wrapped in Blue". Crystal clear blue waters, white sand, pristine seascapes... What better place to get all-natural sea salt? The sea and the sun work together to create the Anguilla sea salt. It is an authentic, unprocessed, chemical free, gourmet salt, packed full of naturally occurring essential minerals. Absolutely no additives, and nothing is removed from the salt that would alter it in any way.

We hope you will enjoy the completely unrefined, natural minerals that adds great flavor to all the food you enjoy! For more information, visit www.anguillaseasalt.com or email us at customercare@AnguillaSeaSalt. com. Heritage Collection Museum For a remarkable opportunity to learn about the history and soul of Anguilla, visit the Heritage Collection Museum in East End. This tiny and
unconventional museum (complete with gift shop) is painstakingly curated by one of Anguilla’s leading historians, Mr. Colville Petty, OBE. Old photographs and local records and artifacts trace the island's history over four millennia, from the days of the Arawaks to the present. Items you can browse in the Anguilla museum include archaeological finds such as ancient pottery shards and stone tools along with everyday implements of the indigenous people and later settlers. More collections chronicle the slave period, when sugar plantations filled most every arable space on the island. There is another extensive collection of items from the fishing and boat building industries that have always been important to the island, as well as the salt producing industry concentrated around the many salt ponds on the island. High points include historical documents of the Anguilla Revolution and photo albums chronicling island life, from devastating hurricanes to a visit from Queen Elizabeth in 1984. Mr. Petty’s museum is open six days a week, and closed on Sundays. Be sure to call ahead at 264497-4092 or email petty@anguillanet.com. His personal accounts, enthusiastic interest and vast knowledge of Anguilla make the experience very worthwhile.
