CHEERFUL OUTLOOK FOR TOURISM
I
n the modern world, the role tourism plays in the economic well-being of the host society/ community is significant. Responsible and sustainable tourism activities help not only the economic growth but also the social and environmental progress of the destination and its people. At the same time, tourism is highly vulnerable to the untoward developments in any related or unrelated area – be it political, economic, social or natural. Natural disasters can have a devastating effect on the tourism activities of the affected destination – as God’s Own Country realized the hard way last month. Popular in the tourism world for its breathtakingly beautiful locales and its cultural diversity and its people, the south Indian state was hit by one of the worst natural calamities in the form of a flood, which ravaged the land and its people. But it is as resilient as it is vulnerable. It took only days and the destination was back on the road to recovery – thanks to the never say die attitude of the industry stakeholders and the support they got from the government and the travel community. This year the Kerala Travel Mart will be showcasing the destination and the products the state has to offer but also the undying spirit the state has displayed in the face of adversity. Let us all join hands and work towards regaining its affected growth. After all, that is what tourism does best: Offer a helping hand.

The stalls at the exhibition of KTM will 8
feature an array of products, packages and services offered by businesses and entrepreneurs. The KTM 2018 will showcase to the global industry that Kerala tourism is alive and kicking again severely battered by the floods. It has also mobilised several teams to actively participate in cleaning up works, restoration of roads and mobilisation of relief material for the affected people. “Kerala is back on track. Road connectivity has been re-established. Flights are operating now. Hotels and resorts are up and running. God’s Own Country is ready to welcome tourists once again. The season’s first chartered flight carrying 60 tourists from Australia arrived in Kochi on September 15,” State Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said.
“Airports, road and rail networks are operational. The fourth airport at Kannur in north Kerala will be opened soon. The arrival of tourists had started picking up from 29 August. Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad, which were affected due to rains and landslides, are now open for tourists and public as was Eravikulam National Park,” said P Bala Kiran, Director, Kerala’s Department of Tourism. In its previous edition, the key themes of discussion included promotion of organic products, attaining energy efficiency and garbage management. This edition, major topics to be deliberated at the seminars will include enhancing the green cover of the state, rainwater harvesting and reduction of the use of plastic. Yana Filippova, a Russian, selected as the Eurasia Beauty Queen, has been roped in as a goodwill ambassador of KTM for Russia. “The response to this edition of KTM has been overwhelming with 593 overseas buyers from 68 countries and 1,090 domestic buyers having registered as participants. Society. Meticulous plans have been made for the accommodation of the participants, with over a 1,000 rooms having been booked in top hotels in the city. Separate tour packages for the business delegates have also been planned, the itinerary of which includes top Ayurvedic spas.
Malabar tourismfocal theme of KTM 2018 The promotion of Malabar tourism will be the focal theme of the upcoming tenth edition of KTM. “The opening of Kannur airport this year would give a boost to tourism in the Malabar region in north Kerala. Opening of Kannur airport this year, the influx of tourists to Malabar region will increase. The implementation of the Malabar river cruise project, covering nine rivers, has already begun. The government has sanctioned Rs 53.5 crore for this scheme in the first phase,” said Kadakampally Surendran. Tourism industry people, including hoteliers and tour operators and Kerala Tourism join hands for this big event. Kerala Tourism wants more investors to come to Malabar region. The most striking feature of the KTM is that the event is a collaboration between the state government and tourism trade,” said Rani George, Secretary, Tourism Department. The tenth edition of KTM will Convey a strong message to the community of travellers across the world that the flood-ravaged Kerala Tourism is s now back into business with a renewed vigor. Since its inception, all the nine marts were successful, and this tenth edition, which should be even better. The KTM is right platform to tell the world that the tourism industry in Kerala is all geared up again. Most of the destinations are not much affected by the floods; it’s only a few roads that have damaged. The government is working to fix that. This year, there is more than 100 percent increase in the KTM registration. This shows the success of KTM 2018.
Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) is set to be ‘bigger and better’ than previous years. The members associated with KTM are working hard to make this event a successful one. KTM is a unique venture of the tourism industry stakeholders in Kerala and the government as well to promote and market the destination and its products. Season’s first chartered tourist flight arrives at Kochi
T
he first chartered flight from Australia for the season landed at the Cochin International Airport here around 6 p. m. on September 15. The tourists, numbering 46, were given a warm reception after the Kerala tradition. Nearly a month after the devastating floods, tourists are back in Kerala. The tourism minister tweeted “We are hoping for a great start to the tourist season.” The arrival of the tourists from Australia is a significant development a month after unprecedented rains and floods in the State. Airports, roads and railway lines have been restored and services are fully operational, said officials of the state government. Since May 29, a total of 491 people had
died due to rain and floods; the maximum number of deaths occurred after August 8, as per the state government. State tourism officials had earlier described the expected arrival of the tourists as a strong message that Kerala Tourism was ready to welcome guests after a quick recovery from the floods in the State. “Kerala tourism is bouncing back from the flood-related damage, which has not affected most of the tourist spots, hotels and resorts in the state,” Bala Kiran, the director of tourism department told
news agency PTI. Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad, which were badly affected by floods and landslides, are now open for tourists. The state government has sent a note to the home ministry, giving details about the loss of human life, properties, infrastructure and crops. The Kerala government sought Rs. 4,700 crore as compensation from the centre for the damage caused
by the floods, termed as the worst in a century, officials said. In a bid to boost businesses, the Kerala government is all set to hold the Travel Mart 2018, from September 27-30, and the 4th edition of KochiMuziris Biennale, the biggest contemporary art event in Asia, will be held from December 12 to March 19, 2019. Both the events are big crowd pullers say locals.
Kerala tourism prepares action plan to revive tourism
K
erala Tourism is preparing an action plan to revive tourism. Kerala is looking for a big comeback after the catastrophic floods, said Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran. The devastating floods in Kerala last month, coming soon after a Nipah virus outbreak, has left the state’s tourism industry in tatters, with almost complete cancellation of bookings for three months.
22
“After Ockhi and Nipah came the floods. We are facing a big crisis in the tourism sector. Luckily, no destination in the state was fully destroyed in the floods. The government will implement an action plan to tide over the crisis and make a big comeback,” he said. Kerala Tourism rolled out a 12-point action plan to revive the sector, which include rebuilding and repairing roads that connect popular tourist destinations on a war footing, and launching aggressive marketing campaigns within the country and abroad. Kadakampally said the action plan was being prepared in consultation
with stakeholders in the industry. Several travellers had cancelled their Kerala travel plan last month. It plans to conduct a series of awareness and sensitisation campaigns alongside tour operators and trade bodies over the next couple of months to assure Indian and overseas tourists that all will be well soon in ‘god’s own country’, department officials said. The focus will be given to digital campaigns. Kadakampally said the damage to tourism sector would affect the Kerala economy in a big way. A planned and strong intervention is the need of the hour, added the minister. “We need to give
out a message that we are safe and tourism is back on track,” said Abraham George, member, National Tourism Advisory Council. “There have been complete cancellations for August, September and October. Unfortunately, the health advisories released have been misinterpreted by certain sections of the media and it gives the impression that Kerala is unsafe,” he said. “Our estimate is that the loss in business through tourism in the state could be as much as Rs 2,000 crore,” said George, who is also the chairman at Kochi-based tour operator Intersight Tours and Travels. Kerala Tourism wins two PATA gold awards
K
erala Tourism’s efforts to get back on track after the recent devastating floods got a shot in the arm as it won two prestigious awards for its innovative marketing campaigns. The awards were presented at a glittering function in Langkawi, Malaysia during Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart 2018, a release said here. Sudeshna Ramkumar, Assistant Director, India Tourism, Singapore received the award on behalf of Kerala tourism. Kerala Tourism got the first gold for its ‘Yalla Kerala’ travel advertisement print media campaign in the Gulf countries. It showcased
the state’s greenery and backwaters, a different world from the Gulf, just four hours away. With the punch line, ‘Yalla Kerala’, the campaign triggered a lot of interest for God’s Own Country as a tourism destination in the Gulf countries. The second gold award came for an innovative poster Kerala Tourism had developed for the third edition of the KochiMuziris Biennale (KMB), the biggest contemporary art show in South Asia. The live-inspired poster featured a colourful boat and fishermen, and could be put up straight as well as upside down. “Winning two gold medals of PATA will give a fillip to our ongoing efforts
for a robust rejuvenation of tourism in the state. This is a huge honour for Kerala Tourism. Our efforts have already started paying off. Most of our tourist destinations are ready to welcome the visitors from India and abroad,” said Kerala Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran. In fact, the first chartered flight of tourists from Australia in this season has arrived in Kochi on September 15,” he said, adding that “the state government has accorded top priority to restore roads
leading to tourist places.” Kerala Tourism Secretary Rani George said the prestigious gold awards were a testament to the undiminished charm of tourist destinations in the state, which attract visitors in droves. “Our tourism campaigns are specimens of creative brilliance and have always evoked international attention and admiration. The latest awards will once again turn the spotlight on the state’s destinations,” she added.

at telling travellers across the world that the tourism industry of the state was back in business with renewed vigour, the organisers said in a press release here. Munnar and Idukki were among the worst-hit in the recent floods in the state, which claimed over 400 lives. Around 150 cars and

The Neelakurinji blooms once in 12 years.
Backing up the venture, Baby Mathew Somatheeram, president, Kerala Travel Mart and Abraham George, expert member, National Tourism Advisory Council, jointly flagged off the rally at Durbar Hall Grounds, which was supported by Kerala Tourism.
The KTM president noted that tourists have already started coming to Munnar and some other destinations in Kerala. “We are sure the tourist season starting next month would witness business as usual with a large number of footfall, and the support from tourists from across the country and outside would be a an evidence to the resilience of Kerala’s tourism industry,” he said.
“This is a rally to draw tourists to experience Munnar and convey the message that there are no longer hurdles to reaching the place and experiencing the beautiful sight of Neelakurinji flowers blooming,” the release quoted Mathew as saying.
Abraham George said the rally would serve as “this is a right campaign to tell the world that the tourism industry is all geared up. As this is the year of Nilakurinji, the rally will give a symbolic opening to Neelakurinji season.”

he massive Bekal Fort lies around 16 kilometers to the south of northernmost district in Kerala, Kasaragod. It is among the biggest forts in Kerala and has been impeccably maintained throughout the years. It is among the finest tourist attractions on the northern tip of God’s own country. Bekal Fort is situated at Bekal, Pallikera village in Hosdurg Taluk in Kasaragod district. The fort appears to emerge from the sea. The Bekal Fort has a unique keyhole shape and was built in the 17th century for the sole purpose of protecting Bekal against enemies entering via the endless expanse of the Arabian Sea. Almost three quarters of its exterior is in contact with water. Bekal fort was not an administrative centre and doesn’t include any palace or mansion. It rises to 130 feet above sea level and is situated on a headland spanning 35km. Much effort has been put to develop a beautiful beach here called the Bekal Fort Beach. The fort’s zigzag entrance and surrounding trenches reveal its defensive strategy. The bastions of the Bekal Fort rise to a great height

Built using laterite slabs and with a polygonal shape, it is amongst the most visited sites in Kerala. Situated comfortably on steep hills by the sea, the fort provides for an imposing view from the beach. The most wonderful part of Bekal is its seclusion. While the rawness of the countryside is well preserved in Bekal, it also boasts of luxury hotels, resorts and budgets hotels. The Bekal Tourism Development Corporation is now working to make the place an international tourist center. Meanwhile, Bekal’s golden sands, emerald backwaters, and beautiful hills have made it a perennial favorite of filmmakers.
Historical Significance of Bekal Fort Bekal Fort was primarily a military stronghold in the Malabar area, strategically built to combat invaders from the sea. q&A
Hotels have a critical role in developing destinations; Manoj Mathew Manoj Mathew V M, General Manager – Taj M G Road, shares his views on the Indian hospitality landscape and the role of a hotel in developing a destination You have been in the hospitality industry for the past several years. Could you tell us about your early days? What made you enter the hospitality sector? Yes, I have been in this industry for over three decades and am loving it. My early formative days were fun and frolic. I was born in a Steel Township- Bhilai Steel Plant. Basketball was my passion and was playing for the Steel Plant Team, was heading the Ravishanker University Basketball team and played for the Indian Universities. I was getting ready to settle down as a SAIL employee when the catering bug bit me. Those days many articles on Hotel Management courses kept appearing and thus I starting getting interested in the hospitality sector. Being born in a Steel Town, for me initially it was an aspirational career which had all the right ingredients- life in a city, good life, glamour and glitz! I guess, while I enjoyed playing basketball
26
immensely- I was getting bored growing up in the same township hence I decided to take the plunge. Initially this decision taken by me was quite disconcerting for my parents as this was not something they had planned. But thankfully they accepted my decision. Congratulations on being elected as the President of SKAL International Bangalore. What are your future plans?
As far as Taj M G roadBengaluru, is concerned, exciting times ahead. We are in the final stages of completion of an extensive renovations programme. We will be offering newly renovated luxurious rooms and a tastefully designed Multi-cuisine All Day Diner for our patrons. This will create a new benchmark of luxury and service in the CBD. SKAL International Bangalore has co-partnered with Karnataka Tourism and will be hosting the prestigious Asia Congress 2019 in June. We are expecting over 150 international delegates and 250 domestic participants. Taj M G road Bangalore will be the Convention Hotel and it will be a great opportunity to showcase Karnataka Tourism and for that matter a taste of ‘Incredible India’ to the visiting delegates.
How do you see the role of a hotel in developing a destination? What all things can hospitality sector do in this regard? Hotels have a critical role in developing destinations and kick-starting the tourism industry. It facilitates a safe and secure environment for boarding and lodging in the primary stages apart from generating employment within the community- both directly and indirectly. In a business environment, it offers facilities and services which considerably help in conducting business. It provides dining options within its vicinity which makes it convenient for its guests to dine and entertain. In this fast paced dynamic environs, the hotels are a key resource in providing stable connectivity and uninterrupted open channels of communications thereby creating a space for ease in doing business. Stressfree options and work-life balance are only possible in hotels which have options for relaxation and rest even if one is not located ASIAN TRAVELLER | September 2018
in a leisure destination. Thus healthy dining options, comfortable beds, impeccable service in a safe, secure and hygienic environment is what the hospitality industry offers to the guests visiting the destination. You must be aware that Taj Group have been pioneers in developing destinations, be it Goa or Kerala. Would you please share with us the proudest and some of the unforgettable moments in your professional life? Having worked so long in this industry there are many proud and unforgettable moments. The ones which I can recollect immediately Being the GM for the first time at Taj Kumarakom in 1992 and creating that hotel into a veritable most sought after destination of the south! Saving our guests during the floods in Baroda now (Vadodara) in 2008. Winning more than seven awards for the hotel in Baroda. Opening the first hotel in the Capital of Kerala against all odds! Bringing the Sri Lankan General Managers to Kerala to show them the uncanny resemblance between Kerala and Sri Lanka. Last but not the least – coming back to the same hotel (Taj M G Road, Bengaluru ) as the General Manager from where I started my career with Taj 32 years back! In your career, have you ever worked abroad? What according to you are the advantages of working overseas? I have been fortunate to have two assignments in two countries – Zambia and Sri Lanka spanning over 10 years. For an hotelier, working overseas is definitely a huge advantage and has many benefits. It broadens your perspective both professionally and personally. The international exposure make one more culturally
sensitive and in many ways a more responsible citizen as you now represent not only your organisation but also your country. Travelling overseas also gives us an exposure to experience the other hotel chains and study their best practices and great opportunity for networking with fellow professionals, exposure to different cuisines and etiquettes. These countries have taught me to be thankful about life and enjoy each happy moment and not wait for that one big moment (which might not even come!) They taught me to be patient and persistent yet respectful at all times. Where would you like to see yourself, say, 10 years from now? Opening hotels, working in different locations both in India and abroad, working in extremely challenging conditions and getting results has made me a die-hard fan of this industry and I will continue to contribute and follow my passion. While I retire from Taj next year I don’t intend to hang my boots yet! Having been an integral part of this industry, 10 years from now I see my role in an advisory capacity in

are following their passions.
How do you see the growth prospects of Indian hospitality sector?
Please tell us about your hobbies and other interests?
Indian hospitality industry in my view is undergoing a metamorphosis! Challenging yet exciting times ahead. While a lot depends on the external factors Upscale and Upper upscale hotels will continue to flourish but will start collaborating with similar industries. Disrupters like Air BnB will get regularised and will be more accountable but midscale hotels will be more aggressive in their presence in India.
Each place of work or residence had a deep influence on my interests and hobbies. While it was basketball while in School and College, the physical activities reduced over time. My assignment in Kumarakom made the whole family- bird watchers and Nature lovers. This continued due to my posting in Africa. I love photography and dabble a bit in poetry. I am passionate about food, cooking and sharing recipes and love to travel and meet people. I love badminton and play every morning for 1 ½ hours (6 days a week).
About your Family? My wife Anita, is an ex-hotelier who sacrificed her career for raising our two sons Tushar and Nishant. Our elder son Tushar is extremely talented and is a post-graduate in Performing Arts and is presently working in California (USA). Nishant is in his final year of graduation in Economics from the University of Victoria in Canada and doing extremely well for himself. We are very proud of our two children and we are happy to see that they
Which is your favourite destination? Why? I love Sri Lanka for its scenic beauty, night life and clean beaches. I love Italy for its amazing art, architecture, history, food and culture. I love Kumarakom and Alleppey for its backwaters and cuisine and the lush scenic beauty. I love Africa for its wildlife and music. It is impossible to pinpoint any one place or country as a favourite. 27

RIU to Open First UK Hotel in London RIU Hotels & Resorts (RUI) has acquired a property in a premium area of London, which will be converted into a 4-star hotel as part of its Riu Plaza urban line
L
ocated in one of the city’s prime neighbourhoods — right next to Victoria Station, Westminster Cathedral and Buckingham Palace — the upcoming Riu Plaza will become the chain’s first hotel in the UK. It will be a 4-star hotel, with 350 rooms, geared mainly towards guests visiting London on sight-seeing holidays. Following a complete refurbishment, the property will open by the end of 2020. Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts, explained: “Location is very important for all our hotels, but for the Riu Plaza line, it is essential that we are located very close to the places of cultural and tourist interest and very well-connected.” “After years spent studying the best offers in the city, we are very pleased to announce this project, for which we estimate an investment of around EUR 250 million (USD 292 mn) to cover the purchase of the building and the refurbishment. The location is unbeatable, the building is in excellent condition and I think that in less than two years we will be able to

Strolling by large gardens and immersing in crystal clear swimming pools, providing a wide range of activities and some enjoyable entertainment programs for children and adults, has become another insignia of Riu Hotels, which now ensures its customers that their only task is to choose the destination, because the fun and comfort are guaranteed. The international RIU chain was founded in Mallorca by the Riu family in 1953 as a small holiday firm and is still owned by the family’s third generation. In November 1953, Juan Riu Masmitja and his wife Maria Bertran Espigule acquired, with their son Luis Riu Bertran, the San Francisco hotel, a small 80bed establishment located in Playa de Palma (Mallorca, Spain). This was to be the first hotel of many in the future of the international hotel chain. In the 80s, RIU began to expand into other destinations. Bizzare foods
The world’s weirdest and bizarre delicacies Traveling is often about trying the unusual and attempting to experience a different culture in the country you’re visiting. One of the best ways to do this is to try the foods locals eat. From eggs to maggot cheese, here’s are some of the most bizarre food dishes from around the world, guaranteed to linger on your tastebuds. They may not be to everyone’s tastes, but the following foods, considered weird and bizarre, or even dangerous to outsiders, are considered delicacies in their countries
Puffer fish, Japan Be careful with this delicacy or you might end up in the morgue. The deadly Puffer fish, or fugu, is the ultimate delicacy in Japan even though its skin and insides contain the poisonous toxin tetrodotoxin, which is 1,250 times stronger than cyanide. Therefore, in Japan only expert chefs
in licensed restaurants are allowed to prepare it. You should try this at licensed restaurants, otherwise, you could end up paralysed and eventually die from asphyxiation because it is incurable. Fifteen people died in Thailand when the fish was declared illegal and people started dying it pink and passing it off as salmon.
that some people, especially in Finland, consider to be the ultimate ingredient in risotto or pasta dishes. It contains gyromitrin, which affects the liver, central nervous system and sometimes the ability to get pregnant.
False morel mushroom, Finland
sure people know how to prepare and handle the delicacy properly. To make sure diners won’t get poisoned or, in the worst case, die, the mushroom has to be parboiled several times to reduce the amount of toxins. The mushroom can’t be left to dry where people are around either, because of the high toxic levels that go into the air.
The false morel mushroom is a special dish. Inexperienced hands shouldn’t attempt cooking the highly toxic mushroom
In most European countries the mushroom has been banned. In Finland they have special cooking classes to make

Finland isn’t the only Scandinavian country embracing the ‘treat’. In Sweden, it has become a more frequently used ingredient at restaurants. Sweden’s National Food Agency, Livsmedelverket,

even considers it a health and safety issue for chefs who prepare the toxic mushroom.
Maggot cheese (Casu marzu), Italy To get closer to Italian wildlife you can try eating the Sardinian cheese casu marzu (rotten cheese). Fly larvae help the sheep milk cheese’s fermentation process, and, as some diners prefer to keep the insects in the cheese even after this stage, they can witness maggots jumping as they put the cheese in their mouth. The European Union has banned this sheep’s milk cheese for Health and Safety reasons, and it can only be found in Sardinia. However, on the large Italian island in the Mediterranean sea, they believe it is dangerous to eat their cheese if the maggots have died. The ‘world’s most dangerous cheese’ got its name for a reason, but on Sardinian weddings and celebrations it is still a delicacy. The strong ammonia flavour can also sting as you tuck into the maggot cheese and the aftertaste is said to linger for hours.

weeks to two years. The FDA is not as impressed by the small insect, though, and the importing of the hardy cheese to America stopped a few years ago.
Surstromming, Sweden Surströmming or fermented herring is a famous traditional Swedish dish. Anyone who is close enough to its strong aroma (worse than rotten eggs) has the right to an opinion. When opened, surströmming releases a strong and sometimes overwhelming odour so it is usually eaten outside.
Balut is Vietnamese and Philippine street food. It is a developing duck embryo that some people refer to as ’dog meat soup’. Just days before the egg hatches, when it is 14 to 21 days old, it is hard boiled and the foetus’s feet, beak and eyes are clearly visible. The foetus is boiled alive in its egg. Before foodies tuck in, they often add salt or chilli, vinegar and onion to the duck that’s commonly eaten straight out of the cracked egg and ‘enjoyed’ with a beer. Like many Chinese dishes, balut is claimed to have many health benefits, such as enhancing libido and fertility. Some Filipinos enjoy balut daily for breakfast, but others are not keen to eat the national delicacy. Some schools even use the eggs at science classes to introduce the dish to children. After the students have dissected the bird and studied it, they’re encouraged to eat it.
US, some people still choose to consume large quantities of the French cheese Mimolette. The cheese originates from Lille and was inspired by the Dutch’s Edam cheese, but a major difference that the French refers to as affineurs, (’refiners’) gave rise to FDA’s concern in 2013. The cheese’s bright orange paste has a sweetness to it. It’s said to taste like bacon, butterscotch, toasted nuts and caramel, and goes well with red wine or dessert wine. It’s protected by a brown, unappetizing hard layer of dust that becomes more difficult to cut through as the cheese ages. The French call mites refiners because of their vital role in the ageing process, which takes six

Live Octopus, Korea Sannakji is a raw dish consisting of live octopus typical in Korea. Eating live octopus is a serious challenge. Beyond the mental challenge of trying to get your head round eating something that’s still alive, but there’s the physical difficulty of fighting with your food, as the tentacles stick to any surface they touch. Live octopus is cut into pieces, lightly seasoned with sesame oil and served immediately, the tentacles still squirming on the plate. The first problem is to get the tentacles off your chopsticks, and once the octopus is in your mouth it will suction to your teeth, the roof of your mouth and your tongue essentially trying to preserve its own life. Special care should be taken to chew thoroughly, however, because if the suction cups stick to the throat, you might choke. Some locals consider it a “party in your mouth” as the tentacles wriggle while you chew.
Puffin Heart, Iceland Iceland is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of puffins and ‘sky fishing’ is a sport which involves catching the low flying birds in a big net. Sometimes referred to as the ‘clown of the ocean’ or ‘sea parrot’, the puffin, with its colourful beak and clumsy behavior, is considered an adorable bird. The sight of a puffin flapping its wings and jumping from a cliff to generate enough lift to become airborne is enough to make anyone go ‘aaaah’. In Iceland, however, these seabirds have been a source of nutrition for Icelanders on the islands for centuries.

R
amanathaswamy Temple is the most popular temple of Rameshwaram, which is a small island connected to the mainland via Pamban Bridge. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this highly sacred temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and is visited by almost every Hindu devotee. It is undoubtedly the most important part of a Rameswaram tour. Known for its intricate works, majestic towers and corridors this temple is a fine example of architecture excellence. It is one of the 274 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where the three of the most revered Nayanars (Saivite saints), Appar, Sundarar and Tirugnana Sambandar, have glorified the temple with their songs. Ramanathaswamy literally means ‘The Master of Rama’, which refers to Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to have been established and worshiped by Rama, an avatar of the god Vishnu, to absolve the sins created during the Ramayana war at Sri Lanka. The temple has two Lingams presiding,
which are Ramalingam and Viswalingam. The presiding deity, the Lingam of Ramanathaswamy (Shiva), is believed to have been established and worshiped by Rama who was aided by Devi Sita and Lord Hanuman. Since Ravana was a Brahmin and a devotee of Shiva as well. Ramalingam was the one built with sand by Devi Sita herself and Viswalingam was the one brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasha (abode of Lord Shiva). There are separate shrines for Ramanathaswamy and his consort goddess Parvathavardhini separated by a corridor. For the goddess Vishalakshi, the utsava images, sayanagriha, Vishnu and Ganesha there are separate shrines. There are various halls inside the temple, namely Anuppu Mandapam, Sukravara Mandapam, Setupati Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam and Nandi Mandapam. The main deity (moolavar) of the temple, the Shiva linga installed by Lord Rama is kept inside this shrine. Ramanathaswamy shrine is built using dark black granite stones, and the Vimana (roof top tower) was coated with gold. The temple has striking long corridors in its interior, running between huge colonnades on platforms above five feet high. Similar to all ancient temples in South India, on all four sides

The pride of place in the establishment for the Temple goes to the Setupatis of Ramanathapuram. Dalavai Setupati built a portion of the main eastern Gopuram in the seventeenth century. There are sixtyfour Teerthas (holy water bodies) in and around the island of Rameswaram. According to Skanda Purana, twenty-four of them are important. Twenty-two of the Teerthas are within the

The temple is one of the holiest Hindu Char Dham (four divine sites) sites comprising Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka. The four monasteries lie across the four corners of India and their attendant temples are Badrinath Temple at Badrinath in the North, Jagannath Temple at Puri in the East, Dwarakadheesh Temple at Dwarka in the West and Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram in the South. The initiative will focus on Doha, the capital of Qatar, which already has a cruise terminal, and aims to build a strong relationship between the cruise lines and Qatar ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The partnership resulted from the round of talks between QTA officials and major cruise lines that highlighted the country’s growing tourism sector. QTA also boasts the significant efforts underway to provide cruise visitors with smooth and seamless experiences at the port of entry and throughout the country. Qatar welcomed over 65,000 cruise passengers last season – a 39% increase from the 2016/17 season. The majority of passengers were German and Italian. This notable growth is supported by the Doha Port Redevelopment Project, which will convert the port at the heart of the capital’s cultural district into a permanent cruise terminal and tourist destination in its own right. QTA’s Acting Chairman, Hassan Al Ibrahim, said: “We are delighted to announce these new developments and additions to the fleet of cruise ships arriving at Doha Port over the coming seasons. After the exceptional success of the last cruise season, this agreement is another step towards our target of 200,000 cruise visitors by 2020, and we are looking forward to working with our partners on the ground in Qatar to provide unforgettable experiences to each and every passenger.” He added, “Qatar’s authentic experiences and traditional hospitality have proven immensely popular with cruise visitors, and we believe that once AIDA and Costa, two leading brands in the industry, have made these initial visits, Qatar will be a frequent destination on their itineraries.”

As one of the world’s fastest-growing airlines, Qatar Airways has a modern fleet of more than 200 aircraft flying to business and leisure destinations across six continents
The national carrier of the State of Qatar recently received four prestigious awards at this year’s 2018 World Airline Awards, managed by international air transport rating organisation, Skytrax, after being awarded titles for ‘World’s Best Business Class’, ‘Best Business Class Seat,’ ‘Best Airline in the Middle East,’ and ‘World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge.’
To start direct Mombasa flights in December
Qatar Airways will launch direct flights to Kenya’s second biggest city Mombasa in December in a move that steps up competition for domestic carriers. The four-times weekly service between Doha and Mombasa will be Qatar Airways’ second Kenyan destination, in addition to existing flights to Nairobi. They will be operated with an Airbus A320, with 12 business class and 120 economy class seats, with a flight time of just over six hours. The State-owned airline joins international carriers such as Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and RwandAir, which currently fly directly into the coastal city. Their operations are seen to pile pressure on Kenya Airways (KQ) , which until recently dominated the international transfers between Nairobi and Mombasa. Unlike these carriers, KQ has to pass through its Nairobi hub before proceeding to Mombasa, making Qatar’s December entry a
competitive threat to its business model. Mombasa is Kenya’s main coastal tourist destination and a popular gateway to the Kenya’s white beaches and coral reef diving. The cosmopolitan city has also become a popular destination for international tourists thanks to its diverse cultural mix and old town charm. Ethiopian Airlines announced in June it will fly to Mombasa twice daily, further raising the stakes for KQ. Kenya signed the open sky agreement to improve connectivity across the continent and make it more affordable, which has seen the national carrier face tougher competition on its backbone African routes. Qatar Airways (QA) is also reviewing its plans for launching a domestic airline in India after realising that a 100 per cent foreign-owned carrier here — though allowed by FDI norms — is not possible in reality. The reason: substantial ownership and effective control of such airlines has to be with an Indian entity in any JV airline like it is with the Tatas in Vistara.

Kongthong; Whistling Village of Meghalaya
In Kongthong, a mother composes a special tune when a baby is born and that becomes a unique identity of the child world creeps into Kongthong in the shape of televisions and mobile phones. Some of the newer melodic names are inspired by Bollywood songs.
I
n a remote village in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, villagers call out to each other in a very unique way. Curious whistles and chirrups echo through the jungle around Kongthong, but this is no birdsong. It’s people calling out to each other in music. They do not shout names or use commonly accepted interjections like ‘Oye’, ‘Hey’, or even ‘Hello’. Scattered by quaint huts and farms fringed with betel nut trees, this tiny hamlet is inhabited by nearly 700 villagers who cultivate the land, hunt in the forests and live a peaceful pastoral life. The mothers of Kongthong, with the help of other villagers, compose a special and unique melody for each child and everyone in the village then addresses the person in the same melody for their lifetime. Moreover, the lullaby has no words and is just is a tune, a kind of hum that only the villagers are able to recognise and remember. They have conventional “real” names too, but they are rarely used. This rich tradition has remained little-known in
54
its own country, with the government doing little to protect this cultural heritage or give it the recognition it deserves. Each lullaby – or jingrwai lawbei in the tribe’s dialect is typically inspired by nature and natural sounds. It is anything from half-aminute to a minute long. Jingrwai lawbei, means “song of the clan’s first woman,” a reference to the Khasi people’s mythical original mother. These melodious tunes are used by the mothers to call out to their children, who learn to respond to them quickly. After it has been ensured that the whistled lullaby is different from all others, it becomes a permanent identity marker for the child. The origin of jingrwai lawbei isn’t known, but locals think it is as old as the village, which has existed for as long as five centuries. Kongthong has long been cut off from the rest of the world. Electricity arrived only in 2000, and the dirt road in 2013. Every summer, on a full moon night, the villagers light a bonfire and take part in a celebration
in which every unmarried young man sings his own tune. The man who performs best is usually chosen by the prettiest single woman as her groom. The villagers, to call out to each other while in the forest, would use a long version lasting around 30 seconds of each other’s musical “name,” inspired

by the sounds of nature all around. In the last few years, several scholars from Europe and USA have spent time in the village to study and understand its unique system of communication. A similar tradition can also be observed in Kuskoy, a remote mountain village high above Turkey’s Black Sea coast, whose residents communicate through a series of earsplitting, warbling whistles that strongly resemble birdsong. This tradition may not last too long, as the modern
“A woman thinks of a particular tune when she is pregnant, which becomes the name of the newborn. After the birth of the child, adults around it repeatedly hum that tune so that it identifies with the sound. This is an age-old tradition the origin of which is as old as the region itself. It is particularly useful during hunting expeditions. When a group goes hunting, they use these sounds to call fellow members without arousing the curiosity of another group that may be after the same prey,” Ever E F Sancley, a PhD scholar at the North Eastern Hill University, told Times of India. As per a report a homestay called Traveller’s Nest has been set up at Kongthong to boost tourism and efforts are being made to preserve the indigenous culture. Kongthong Travellers Nest is located at a distance of 56 kms from Shillong City, promoted by the Indigenous Agro Tourism Cooperative Society. The Kongthong Traveller’s Nest houses two cottages, built entirely of bamboo and wood, designed in a way that is traditional to the area. Being located between the two more famous ridges, getting to Kongthong by trekking there from either the Pynursla or the Sohra ridge is an adventure that not many will ever experience.

Travel Survey
Vienna named world’s most liveable city The study looked at 140 cities and scored them on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure architecture. It is famous for its cultural events, imperial sights, coffee houses, cozy wine taverns, and the very special Viennese charm.
F
or the first time Melbourne has been dislodged by Vienna in a survey. Vienna is at the top of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s global liveability index, strengthening the Austrian capital’s claim to being the world’s most pleasant city to live in. The two metropolises have been neck and neck in the annual survey of 140 urban centres for years, with Melbourne clinching the title for the past seven editions. This year, a downgraded threat of militant attacks in western Europe as well as the city’s low crime rate helped nudge Vienna into first place. The study looked at 140 cities and scored them on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Vienna regularly tops a larger ranking of cities by quality of life compiled by the consulting firm Mercer. It is the first time it has topped the EIU survey, which began in its current form in 2004. At the other end of the table, Damascus retained last place, followed by the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka,
60
and Lagos in Nigeria. The survey does not include several of the world’s most dangerous capitals, such as Baghdad and Kabul. “While in the past couple of years cities in Europe were affected by the spreading perceived threat of terrorism in the region, which caused heightened security measures, the past year has seen a return to normalcy,” the EIU said on Tuesday.
Vienna and Melbourne scored maximum points in the healthcare, education and infrastructure categories “A long-running contender to the title, Vienna has succeeded in displacing Melbourne from the top spot due to increases in the Austrian capital’s stability category ratings.” Vienna and Melbourne scored maximum points in the healthcare, education and infrastructure categories. But while Melbourne extended its lead in the culture and environment component, that was outweighed by Vienna’s improved stability
ranking. Osaka, Calgary and Sydney completed the top five in the survey, which the EIU says tends to favour medium-sized cities in wealthy countries, often with relatively low population densities. Much larger and more crowded cities tend to have higher crime rates and more strained infrastructure, it said. Dublin is at number 41, ahead of London at 48, Rome at 55 and New York at 57. Vienna, once the capital of a large empire rather than today’s small Alpine republic, has yet to match its pre-first world war population of 2.1 million. Its many green spaces include lakes with popular beaches and vineyards with sweeping views of the capital. Public transport is cheap and efficient. In addition to the generally improved security outlook for western Europe, Vienna benefited from its low crime rate, the survey’s editor, Roxana Slavcheva, said. Vienna offers a unique blend of imperial traditions and stunning modern
In Vienna, traditional coffee houses, rustic wine taverns and the beloved sausage stand (Wuerstelstand) exist alongside with top restaurants and shops, timehonored events alternate with internationallyacclaimed extravaganzas (Life Ball) to create a unique and very special ambiance. Another special feature of Vienna are its many greenspace and recreational areas such as the Wienerwald, the Prater and the Donauinsel. Also visit Vienna’s Giant Ferris Wheel. One of the oldest operating Ferris Wheels in the world, the Wiener Riesenrad is more than just an amusement park ride, it is a historic landmark. Take a spin on this 213-feet high attraction for exceptional views of Vienna, or book a romantic dinner in a gondola for an unforgettable evening. For more than 700 years now, the magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral has stood watch over the city, and Austrians see it as one of the most important and most beloved landmarks of the country. Climb the 343 steps up to the tower and enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral and you’ll be standing in the same church in which Joseph Haydn sang as a choir boy, and in which Mozart was married in 1782. From the very beginning, the cathedral has played an important part in Vienna’s spiritual and worldly affairs.

Chinas Belt and Road Initiative will boost tourism, transport and trade with Thailand The Thai tourism industry will be a major beneficiary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as the Royal Thai Government moves rapidly to take advantage of the increased investment and trade opportunities it will create, not just within Thailand but across the ASEAN and ACMECS regions. Addressing the ThailandChina Business Forum 2018 on 24 August, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak said that the kingdom’s strategic location at the heart of ASEAN, its long-standing trade and economic cooperation with China and many other regional countries, as well as its growing multi-modal transport linkages are all great competitive advantages which present enormous opportunities to Chinese

He said the Thai government has developed a number of infrastructure projects and special initiatives; such as, the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi), to serve as an incubator hub for startups and human resource development in targeted industries including digital and software development, high value-added products from natural rubber, electric vehicles and automotive parts, machinery and parts, automation and robotics, telecommunication products and parts, biotechnology, electronics and parts, and the manufacture and repair of aerospace technologies. Chinese visitor arrivals to Thailand are already at recordbreaking levels. In the first half of 2018, Chinese visitors totalled six million and will cross the 10 million mark. Beijing’s multibillion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been called a Chinese Marshall Plan, a
