An Arctic culinary Maestro
Nestled between towering mountains and deep fjords, Narvik is a region where nature and culinary tradition intertwine. In recent years, this Arctic destination has gained recognition for its vibrant food scene, thanks to passionate chefs like Eryk Olszewski, the head chef at Scandic Narvik.
Eryk recently showcased his skills on the international stage, winning the prestigious culinary competition Arctic Young Chef in Iceland. Originally from Poland, Eryk has made Northern Norway his home, embracing its Arctic food culture as a defining aspect of his identity as a chef.
- I am deeply inspired by the raw beauty of Narvik’s nature, Eryk explains.
THE ARCTIC COOKING PHILOSOPHY
At the heart of Eryk’s culinary approach is a commitment to honoring nature. His philosophy emphasizes minimal food processing, allowing the region’s pure,
seasonal ingredients to shine. Whether it’s freshly harvested herbs, locally caught fish, or game from the mountains, every dish at Scandic Narvik tells a story about its origin.
His passion for foraging and sourcing ingredients from the local landscape ensures a dining experience deeply rooted in the region. This dedication to sustainability and authenticity has earned Eryk admiration from both locals and travelers.

What a landscape!
Skjomen, located just south of Narvik, is home to one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in our region. Here, you'll encounter steep cliffs, impressive glaciers, and a rich wildlife thriving in this spectacular terrain. Surrounded by majestic granite walls lies Skjomdalen, a lush valley with small clusters of houses and picturesque farms. In the valley, you'll find a beautiful 18-hole golf course and a river known for its salmon fishing, where you can try your luck at catching the big salmon.
The Narvik region is a captivating destination in Northern Norway, offering a unique blend of majestic mountains, deep fjords, and rich history. Known for its stunning Arctic landscapes, it’s a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with activities like skiing, hiking, and the awe-inspiring Northern Lights or Midnight Sun. Narvik offers the perfect blend of outdoor thrills and vibrant city life, with excellent restaurants, shopping centers, and cultural attractions.
The Narvik region is also known for its short distances, making exploration easy and convenient. In less than an hour by car or bus, you can reach most of the area’s villages—from Kjøpsvik in the south, Abisko in the east, Setermoen in the north, to Evenskjer in the west.
ONE STEP CLOSER TO 2029
We’re now one step closer to 2029 and the Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik, a historic milestone for all of Norway and a golden opportunity for us here in the north. Planning is well underway, and we can already see how the anticipation for the championship is fostering a growing optimism in Narvik and the surrounding areas. This optimism is reflected in new development projects and dining options that are revitalizing the city center and making Narvik an increasingly attractive winter destination.
At the same time, Magasin Narvik has undergone its own renewal in this issue. With a new cover layout and all articles available in English, we are adapting to an ever-growing international audience eager to experience the magic of the north.
Among the exciting new offerings in the city center, we’re seeing several unique restaurant concepts that blend local quality with international flavors. Plans are in motion for even more exciting restaurants
and development projects, which will further strengthen Narvik’s position as a food and experience destination in the north.
We look forward to the traditional Vinterfestuka in March, one of Norway’s largest cultural festivals. For an entire week, the city is transformed into a lively cultural arena filled with concerts, parades, and activities that excite both residents and visitors. The festival has deep roots in Narvik and creates an energy that showcases the city’s unique culture and hospitality. This festival is an essential part of Narvik’s winter, growing larger and more popular each year.
For those seeking outdoor adventure, Narvikfjellet is fully prepared as usual for alpine skiers, ski touring enthusiasts, and recreational skiers alike. With a winter landscape like no other and access to some of the best slopes and off-piste areas in the Nordic region, visitors can immerse themselves in the wild and beautiful surroundings, no matter their level or
ambition. And as we look toward 2028, when Narvik will host the World Cup finals, we’re getting a preview of what to expect during the World Championships the following year.
But winter in Narvik is about more than just skiing. You’ll also find a vibrant cultural and social atmosphere, with long dinners, atmospheric evenings in the city center, and the chance to watch the northern lights dance across the night sky.
In this issue of Magasin Narvik, you’ll find the best tips for making the most of winter’s magical days and nights. We hope you feel inspired and look forward to a memorable winter season filled with unique experiences and warm encounters.
Happy reading!

NARVIK LIGHT LINES
A skier with a headlamp descends the steep snowy slope of Gangnesaksla in South Skjomen. The sound of skis cutting through snow fills the otherwise quiet evening. Across the fjord, a photographer captures it all.
GANGNESAKSLA ⇨
Skiers: Pascal Hansson & Leon Kucera / Line: Gangnesaksla
Number of photos : Zoomed-in version = 23 photos. Zoomed-out version = 341 / Month: February Photographed from: The roadside / Shooting time: 17:17 - 18:30
The goal of the project is to capture photos on Narvik’s most iconic mountains –at night with headlamps.
That’s according to Swedish photographer Felix Magnusson, who works daily as a video game developer with an office in Sentrumsgården, right in the heart of Narvik. His employer, or more accurately the studio, is called Still Alive and is headquartered in Austria. Felix is the company’s only employee in Scandinavia.
“We chose to photograph the most famous Narvik mountains first: The Sleeping Queen, the front face of Rombakstötta, Gangnesaksla, and Linken,” he explains.
Skiers Pascal Hansson, Leon Kucera and Moa Rosén are also involved in the project. They have the toughest job, climbing the mountains and skiing down while Felix usually waits on a nearby peak or comfortably in a warm car.
The photos are captured as a timelapse. The camera is mounted on a tripod and takes a series of images from the start until the skiers reach the bottom of the chosen line. At home, I combine these shots into a single image using photo stacking. I use a long exposure, which creates a light trail down the mountain from the headlamp,» says Magnusson.
Last year, descents were photographed from four mountains, including the descent from the so-called «eye» of The Sleeping Queen. It’s a steep and partially exposed line down the front face of this legendary mountain south of Narvik.
There’s also exposed skiing down the Rombak S-et from Tøttatoppen and the steep chute down the spectacular Gangnesaksla in South Skjomen. The easiest run was the backside of Linken on Fagernesfjellet.
They all hope to continue the project this winter and are already scouting some exciting potential mountains.
“We’ll likely try Vomtind, Stetind, and a few other mountains this winter,” he says.
Felix came to Narvik with his partner in 2020, just a few weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and shut down the world. Their time in Narvik was short then— only eight months before moving back across the border to Kiruna, Sweden, where Felix’s partner completed her psychology degree. In 2022, they returned to Narvik.
“Narvik is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding areas. It’s also close to Vesterålen and Lofoten, and it’s easy to take the train back to Sweden,” he says.
The couple has visited many times before moving permanently to Narvik, drawn by the great skiing and mountain running opportunities.
“There’s actually one major reason we’ve done so much skiing in Narvik and Norway, and that’s Micke Af Ekenstam’s top ski guidebooks. His descriptions have inspired many of our trips,” the photographer shares.
In spring 2024, Felix became a father for the first time. Naturally, this has reduced his number of days in the mountains, but the Narvik Light Lines project continues. We’re looking forward to the next set of photos.

LuminaLysdesign for jenter

EMBARK ON AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY INTO THE WILD AT POLAR PARK, THE WORLD’S NORTHERNMOST WILDLIFE PARK.
Since its opening in 1994, Polar Park has been committed to showcasing Norway’s wildlife in natural, expansive enclosures that allow the animals to thrive in their Arctic habitat. Visitors can observe the country’s largest predators up close, including bears, wolves, lynx, and elusive wolverines, as well as herds of moose, reindeer, and the impressive muskox.
A highlight of any visit is the Predator Guiding Program, which is included with your entrance fee.
This guided experience offers a rare and intimate opportunity to get closer to the park’s predators while learning about their behavior and
role in the Arctic ecosystem. During feeding time, guided by experts, you may find yourself just a few meters away from lynx or Arctic foxes— moments that bring the wild to life in breathtaking detail.
The program runs year-round, with tours offered on weekends in the winter and daily throughout the summer, ensuring every visitor can take part in this unique adventure regardless of the season.
Whether you’re observing a wolf prowling through the snow or watching a bear roam its vast enclosure, Polar Park provides a one-of-a-kind Arctic experience. At Linken, it’s casual, informal, and open to everyone, whether you come in jeans and a T-shirt or dressed up. Here, the goal is to provide a laid-back and unpretentious experience, but with top-notch food and drinks.
A few years ago, Linken changed its profile, transforming the restaurant into a relaxed gathering place where both guests and staff feel at home. You can easily come by with friends to share a bottle of wine, enjoy some snacks, or just relax with an
exciting new drink from the ever-updating menu. The menu follows the seasons, and every time you visit, there’s something fresh to experience – Linken aims to offer something unique, something not found anywhere else in Narvik.

Stina, the sommelier and the creative force behind many of the seasonal specialties, has a clear vision: to serve drinks with pure flavors and quality ingredients, designed to give guests a new experience every time they come. Together with Chef Alexander, who has a passion for presenting and explaining each dish, they create a food and drink experience that is approachable and delicious, but with a creative twist.

The Heart of Narvik: Vinterfestuka – A Tribute to Culture, History, and Community
The Story Behind Vinterfestuka
– A Celebration of Narvik's Soul
Every March, Narvik and its surrounding areas transform into a vibrant hub for culture, history, and community during Vinterfestuka. This ten-day festival, first held in 1956, is Norway’s second-oldest cultural festival and a unique tribute to the history of the railway builders, the "rallare" – the foundation of Narvik's identity.
Narvik emerged as a town thanks to Ofotbanen, a railway line built between 1890 and 1903. This railway was essential for transporting iron ore from Kiruna to Narvik’s ice-free port. The town's origins are closely tied to the efforts of the rallare – workers who faced extreme challenges while constructing the railway. Vinterfestuka carries this legacy forward,
combining art, culture, and industrial history to celebrate the town’s origins and strengthen its ties to the Arctic and Barents regions.
A Festival of Breadth and Diversity
Vinterfestuka offers a varied program that spans a wide spectrum – from classical music and jazz to pop, dance,
and theater. The festival is renowned for its focus on involving both amateur and professional artists, making it a platform where local, national, and international performers come together.
Highlights include the literature festival Ord i Spor, featuring dedicated programs for children and youth, and the selection of Årets Svarta Bjørn (The Svarta Bjørn of the Year), a tradition honoring strong women in the railway worker community. Conferences like the Svarta Bjørn Conference, concerts at venues like Lokstall1 and Sjømannskirka, attract audiences of all ages.
With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, the festival features events like Barnas Dag (Children's Day), concerts for middle school students, and local productions involving theater groups, choirs, bands, and jazz clubs.
Vinterfestuka truly has something for everyone – a celebration of Narvik’s cultural diversity and creativity.
Volunteering – The Lifeblood of Vinterfestuka
Behind Vinterfestuka lies an invisible but indispensable force: the more than 200 volunteers who make the festival possible. From coordinating concerts to ensuring Barnas Dag runs smoothly, volunteering is the cornerstone of the festival’s success.
In a region like Northern Norway, where long distances and dispersed populations often present challenges, volunteers play a vital role in sustaining a rich cultural life. Their efforts foster community, ownership, and engagement – values that create lasting ripple effects.
Vinterfestuka is about more than music and history. It’s a celebration of the power of community, where the dedication of volunteers not only ensures the festival’s success but also strengthens the bonds between people across the region.
The next time you visit Narvik in March, remember that Vinterfestuka isn’t just about the past or cultural grandeur. It’s also about the future – and how community and volunteering can keep the soul of an entire town alive.
Guided by a Visionary in Arctic Luxury
In the heart of the Arctic wilderness, Johan "Jossi" Lindblom has transformed his lifelong passion for the mountains into Niehku Mountain Villa, a haven of adventure and luxury in Sweden’s famed Riksgränsen ski area. Located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and just a stone’s throw from the Norwegian border, Niehku invites guests to explore Lapland’s untouched landscapes and experience the art of living well in the Arctic.
Jossi, the co-founder and CEO of Niehku, brings over 25 years of experience in Riksgränsen and a global career as an IFMGA-certified mountain guide to the villa. After leading heliskiing expeditions in some of the world’s most remote regions, including Kamchatka and the Alps, Jossi returned to his roots to share the magic of Arctic adventures. His philosophy is simple: to provide unforgettable experiences where nature, adventure, and relaxation come together in perfect harmony.
Under his leadership, Niehku has redefined Arctic travel. From heliskiing across 5,000 square kilometers of pristine peaks to savoring the Arctic’s ethereal light on “pink powder” slopes, Jossi ensures every guest experiences the region’s unparalleled beauty at their own pace.
A UNIQUE BLEND OF HISTORY AND LUXURY
Niehku, which means "dream" in Northern Sámi, is as much a tribute to the region’s heritage as it is a modern architectural masterpiece. Built into the ruins of the
Malmbanan railway’s roundhouse, the hotel seamlessly integrates its historical foundations with contemporary design. Its award-winning interiors, created by Stylt Trampoli, capture the essence of Lapland’s natural beauty and won the UNESCO Prix Versailles for Best Hotel Interior Design in 2019.
The villa’s 14 double rooms offer superior comfort, while shared spaces, including a dining room, bar, lounge, and spa, create a welcoming atmosphere that combines luxury with a personal touch.
AT NIEHKU MOUNTAIN VILLA, JOSSI’S VISION HAS
CREATED MORE THAN JUST A HOTEL - IT’S A GATEWAY TO THE
ARCTIC DREAM
CULINARY ADVENTURES INSPIRED BY LAPLAND
Dining at Niehku is an extension of its Arctic adventures. Jossi and his team curate a culinary experience that reflects the seasons and the rich flavors of the region. Guests enjoy dishes crafted from local game, fish, and berries, with ingredients sourced from the forests, mountains, and waters surrounding the villa. The wine cellar, ingeniously located in a preserved roundhouse greasing pit, adds another layer of uniqueness, offering an exceptional selection of wines from around the globe.
ADVENTURE AWAITS IN THE ARCTIC
Niehku’s heliskiing program is unrivaled, offering access to over 60 peaks with terrain suited to all levels, from families to seasoned experts. Unlike the rushed pace of typical heliskiing trips, Jossi’s approach emphasizes immersion in the Arctic’s vast landscapes and surreal light. With the midnight sun extending the days, guests have time to savor the unique serenity of skiing in this environment.
REST, RECOVER, AND RECHARGE
After exhilarating days on the slopes, the spa area provides a haven of relaxation. With a sauna overlooking the surrounding mountains, massage services, and a gym for active recovery, Niehku ensures every guest leaves feeling rejuvenated.
At Niehku Mountain Villa, Jossi’s vision has created more than just a hotel—it’s a gateway to the Arctic dream. Combining adventure, history, design, and unparalleled comfort, Niehku is a place where guests come to explore, unwind, and live the dream under the Arctic sky.
Narvik Freeride –Ready to Reach New Heights
On April 25-26, Narvik Freeride returns—an extraordinary ski competition in Narvikfjellet that gathers ski enthusiasts of all ages: children, youth, and adults. Following last year’s success, where Narvik made a strong impression in a competitive field, this year’s event is expected to be even bigger.
Narvik Freeride is not just a local competition; for the oldest juniors (U16 and U18), it is part of the Freeride World Tour, a prestigious 3-star event that attracts participants from around the globe.
Last year’s arena was the front side of Narvikfjellet, just below Linken, with the finish line in Tredjebakken. Magasin Narvik attended the event and was deeply impressed by the high level of skill, particularly among the younger participants, who showcased a combination of technique, control, and fearlessness.
A NEW CAPTAIN AT THE HELM
After several years with Micke af Ekenstam and Jan-Arne Pettersen leading the event, Tommy Garnes, Alexander Solem, Gabriel Sagfjord and Morten Opshaug have now taken the reins.
– After running Narvik Freeride since 2019, we know that our setup and terrain meet international standards. This year, we aim to attract even more participants and strengthen the community of skiers in Narvikfjellet, says Tommy Garnes enthusiastically.
MORE THAN JUST SKIING
Participants are judged by a panel in five categories: line choice, jumps & tricks, flow, control, and technique. This means the competition is about much more than just hurling yourself off the tallest cliff. Creativity, precision, and smooth execution are key.
To accommodate both experienced skiers and the youngest talents, the competition is spread over two days:
• Friday: The seniors compete, with their event also serving as a regional championship.
• Saturday: Children and youth, aged 7 to 18, compete in their own arena, tailored to their skill levels. The U10 and U12 compete in a dedicated kids’ class, while U14 participants take part as part of the Norwegian Cup.
– We want Narvik Freeride to be an inclusive and fun competition where athletes of all ages and abilities can come together. It doesn’t matter if you’re on alpine skis, telemark skis, or a snowboard—everyone is welcome, Garnes emphasizes.
COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION
The competition also has a vital social function, bringing athletes and families together to share their passion for skiing. This year, the organizers have received valuable support from the skiing community in Harstad, something Garnes greatly appreciates.
With Narvikfjellet’s spectacular terrain and an organizing team praised both nationally and internationally, Narvik Freeride is ready to solidify its position as one of Norway’s top freeride competitions.
For participants and spectators alike, two days of thrilling action, stunning ski runs, and a vibrant community await, making Narvik a truly unique destination for winter sports. Ready, set, ski!
IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU’RE ON ALPINE SKIS, TELEMARK SKIS, OR A SNOWBOARD — EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Arctic Train
An
unforgettable journey through a beautiful and wild arctic landscape.
The Arctic Train offers unforgettable experiences along the historical Ofoten Line, Norway’s northernmost railway. Connecting Narvik in Norway to Kiruna in Sweden, the journey showcases a wild Arctic landscape and rich history.
THE OFOTEN LINE: AN ENGINEERING TRIUMPH
Built to transport iron ore from Kiruna’s mines to Navik’s ice-free port, the Ofoten Line stands as a testament to innovation and perseverance. Construction began in the late 19th century, drawing over 5,000 skilled workers, known as “rallars”, at its peak. These workers faced harsh Arctic weather and rugged terrain, employing innovative techniques such as blasting tunnels and constructing viaducts and bridges. The line was completed in just four years, officially opening in 1902.
A ROUTE STEEPED IN HISTORY
The line’s strategic importance made it a focal point during World War II, especially during the Battle of Narvik in 1940, as both sides fought for control over its vital iron ore exports.
- Today, the Ofoten Line continues to play a vital role in iron ore transportation, but it has also become a popular tourist
attraction with the launch of Arctic Train, offering unforgettable tours for individuals and groups, day or evening.
WELCOME ABOARD THE ARCTIC TRAIN
Departing from Narvik, the Arctic Train takes passengers on a roundtrip through the Arctic scenery, including ice-blue fjords, towering mountains, and cascading waterfalls. Along the way, marvel at the engineering feats of tunnels and bridges, while learning about its history from your onboard guide.
CHASE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
On evening departures, immerse yourself in the Arctic night and chase the spectacular Aurora Borealis. Hop off midway, gather around a cozy campfire under the dark starlit sky, away from the city’s light pollution, and enjoy a unique opportunity to witness the northern lights.
JERNBANECAFÉEN
Before embarking on a journey with the Arctic Train, you can visit Jernbanecaféen, Navik’s welcoming railroad café. Originally established in 1903, the café reopened its doors in 2023 after undergoing renovations, transforming it into the cozy hub it is today. Relax in comfortable surroundings, savour warm drinks, fresh pastries, or a hearty lunch, and enjoy authentic Norwegian hospitality. Jernbanecafée is a meeting place for locals as well as visitors from all over the world.

A Freerider’s Mecca
Look at this image. This is a true “mecca” for freeriders. Narvikfjellet offers endless opportunities for easily accessible powder experiences on all sides of the mountain. Both beginners and experienced freeriders can find something spectacular here, from wide, open areas to steeper, technically challenging terrain.
Among the most legendary runs for powder enthusiasts are Tredjeholla, Mørkholla, and Baksiden. When the wind direction has been favorable, Tredjeholla and Mørkholla can offer epic lines and abundant snow for advanced riders. Baksiden, descending from Linken, is known for its easily accessible off-piste right from the chairlift.
In Narvikfjellet, you’ll experience worldclass freeriding with breathtaking views of fjords and mountains, creating a magical backdrop for every run. For powder seekers and adrenaline junkies, there’s hardly a better place to be.
Experience the Magic of the Northern Lights
The Narvik region is a premier destination for witnessing the awe-inspiring northern lights, offering breathtaking views in some of Norway's most stunning landscapes. Positioned well within the auroral oval, the region provides optimal conditions for spotting this natural phenomenon from autumn to early spring.
Whether you’re a seasoned aurora hunter or experiencing the northern lights for the first time, Narvik offers countless vantage points. Skjomen and Efjord provide idyllic settings with calm fjords reflecting the shimmering lights, while Tysfjord enchants visitors with its dramatic mountain backdrop. For those seeking remote tranquility, Langstranda and Herjangen offer dark skies far from city lights. Meanwhile, Bjørnfjell, at higher altitudes, ensures clear skies even when conditions in lower areas are cloudy.
The combination of pristine nature, accessible locations, and vibrant auroral displays makes Narvik one of the best places in the world to experience the northern lights. Bundle up, step outside, and prepare to be captivated by the magic dancing above.

Fagernesfjellet is steeped in the history of Narvik. Since the early 1900s, the mountain has been widely used for play, competitions, and recreation. But what are the names of the various spots?
We asked a group of Narvik locals from the older generation. A fun initiative, yes, but also an important documentation for future generations. Thanks to Henry Norvik, Tore Bjørn Aam, Steinar Hansen, Olaf Schaug-Pettersen, and initiator Preben Bussoli for their valuable input.

A LIFE BUILT IN TROLLVIKEN
At the foot of the mountains in Herjangen, just outside Narvik, Magnus Lindor Strand has created his own paradise. Trollviken Lodge, a gem by the fjord, has become more than just a workplace – it is a home and a way of life for Magnus, his wife Hilde Tendeland, and the guests who visit this unique place.
The story of how Magnus ended up here begins in a completely different world – the financial industry. Born and raised in Stockholm, Magnus quickly climbed the corporate ladder, securing leadership in investment banking positions in London, Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Stockholm. However, over time, the numbers on the screen began to lose their meaning. "What I was doing didn’t feel real or valuable to me," Magnus reflects. A deep longing for mountains, nature, and meaningful experiences led to a dramatic change in his life. Magnus had spent several years of his youth as a semi-professional climber and skier in the big mountain ranges in the world. In 2008, he quit his executive role, enrolled in the Swedish mountain guide education program, and in 2012 became a certified international guide (IFMGA mountain guide, which is the highest professional certification for mountain professionals).
MORE THAN JUST A LODGE
Creating a life in Trollviken hasn’t been without its challenges. Magnus purchased the property in 2011–12 and has since built a thriving and sustainable tourism business. Trollviken Lodge is not merely a place to stay – it is a gateway to something truly unique. With reliable snow conditions, diverse terrains, and strategic access to multiple weather systems, Magnus has developed an offering that attracts skiing enthusiasts from all over the world.
"This is my kingdom," says Magnus. "I work in areas stretching from Stetind to Kiruna, including Andørja, Rolla, Hunddalen, and Abisko. In twelve years, I’ve never had a day without a great trip." This is not just luck – Magnus devotes considerable time and effort to analyzing weather conditions, using custom forecasts, and finding weather windows to ensure world-class experiences for his guests. He has over the years developed a reputation as a world class guide for very good skiers looking for the best skiing possible in the world.
The plans for Trollviken are ambitious. In the coming years, Magnus and Hilde intends to construct a new building, expand the spa facilities, and elevate the main building into a large lodge capable of hosting three groups simultaneously – a total of 18 guests. "We want to create something truly special and unique in the Narvik region," Magnus explains. “but the plans are in early stages and many things need to fall in place before we can realise them”, magnus smiles.
FROM BANKING TO FJORD FISHING
Life in Trollviken is not just about skiing and guiding. Magnus has also embraced the rich fishing culture of northern Norway. After becoming a Norwegian citizen, he purchased a fishing boat, obtained a fishing quota, and became a part-time fisherman. Together with Hilde, who comes from a fishing family in Vesterålen. They also owns a pier in Nyksund, where they have plans for further development.
"It was a steep learning curve," Magnus admits. "The first months at sea were tough. The currents, wind, and waves all worked against each other, and I nearly got washed overboard several times. But I got through the difficult start." Now, he
fishes for cod in early winter on the outer coast of vesterålen and on the Finnmark Plateau in latespring and saithe on the outer coast of Vesterålen in the fall – all as part of a life rooted in authenticity and nature. Magnus is also the most active IFMGA guide on Stetind and has guided Stetind over 180 times, which is how he spends most of his time in the summer
A LIFE WITH PASSION, BUT STILL A SERIOUS PROFESSIONAL
Magnus describes his daily life as a balance between risk and mastery. As a guide, he must navigate dangerous conditions in the mountains while ensuring his guests have experiences they will never forget. "It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’ve helped someone have the best day of their life," he says.
Trollviken Lodge and Magnus’s work are about more than just skiing and mountains. It’s about offering people the chance to reconnect with nature and find peace. "This is what our guests want – an authentic, northern Norwegian story," he explains.
“I put a lot of planning, knowledge, education and time to make sure I deliver worldclass guidning at a risk that the clients and I are comfortable with – every day”, says magnus, who is clearly a proud professional.
With Trollviken fully booked until 2026 and increasing demand for regenerative travel experiences, Magnus has found his calling. "This life isn’t for everyone," he says with a smile. "But for me, it makes sense. This is where I belong."
A deep longing for mountains, nature, and meaningful experiences led to a dramatic change in his life.

76 Pascal's Adventures
⇦
During an autumn climbing trip to Stiberg, I noticed a cool couloir formation descending from Stortinden, 1351 meters, in Skjomen. After scouting it in March, I sent a message to my good friend and adventure partner Micke Ekenstam to see if he was ready for an adventure.
A month later, we drove into Skamdalen and made our way across Mattacorru to the summit of Stortinden. After a short rappel, we enjoyed beautiful turns down towards Skjomen, with Rundtind and Lappviktind as a stunning backdrop.
⇨ December means the polar night in Narvik. But the polar night also brings vibrant colors. The days are short, but often breathtaking. Micke af Ekenstam carves elegant turns descending from Andretoppen, with Rienatcohkka, Huinnarcohkka, and Nihkecohkka in the background.
DECEMBER MEANS THE POLAR NIGHT IN NARVIK. BUT THE POLAR NIGHT ALSO BRINGS VIBRANT COLORS.

The mountain ridge from the top station of the ski resort at Linken up to Tredjetoppen serves as the starting point for some of the most spectacular lift-accessible ski terrain in Norway.

ADVENTURES
IN NARVIK: TOP ROUTES
1. DOWN FROM LINKEN
Just a few pole pushes from the top of the upper chairlift at Linken, you'll find steep and pristine powder skiing. The route follows the power line downhill—keep to the left. Local experts warn of avalanche risks here. When the terrain flattens out, it's easy to traverse back for another ride on the lift.
2. MØRKHOLLA
Narvik's most famous descent is reached after about a 30-minute hike. Mørkholla is a hollow in the mountainside, forming a bowl-like terrain that traps wind-blown snow from all directions. To reach the classic top section, continue along the ridge from the top chairlift station. From the first summit (Andretoppen), you can glimpse into Mørkholla. However, you’ll need to hike further along the ridge to enter the hollow.
At the top, expect steep and challenging terrain that gradually eases. The valley opens into a vast area where you can choose between sunlit or shaded snow.
3. TREDJETOPPEN – TREDJEHOLLA
A 15–20 minute hike further from the entrance to Mørkholla leads you to a cairn overlooking the hollow. The starting point can be tricky to find, so proceed cautiously. There are two options: to the left or right of a large cornice. Once in the bowl, the descent begins steep and gradually levels out. You'll end up in the same area as the Mørkholla descent.
4. DOWN TO ØRA
This south-facing slope can be accessed from either Andretoppen or Tredjetoppen. Carefully assess avalanche risks. Head skier's left (opposite Mørkholla) and descend wide, open slopes. The route ends in a riverbed, transitioning into dense forest where it's easy to lose your way. You’ll eventually reach the road to Beisfjord and will need transportation back.
5. BLACK KIDS
Local enthusiasts initially intended to create a kid-friendly run to the skier's right of Andrebakken. However, the slope turned out steeper than planned, hence the name. This is a great alternative when the Linken lift isn’t operating. The route also offers opportunities for cliff drops.
Enjoy Narvik’s breathtaking terrain, but always prioritize safety and check local avalanche conditions!

A Historic Development
In 2029, Narvik and Fagernesfjellet will host the Alpine World Ski Championships, and an ambitious development project is underway to ensure the facilities meet international standards. With a staggering investment of NOK 712 million, Fagernesfjellet will feature new lifts, upgraded snow production systems, and an impressive grandstand for 8,000 spectators—all designed to provide athletes and visitors with an unforgettable experience.
⇧ The light blue course is the men's track for downhill, super-G, and giant slalom. The red course is the equivalent for women, while the dark blue course is the slalom and parallel track for both genders. The yellow courses are for training and warm-ups. All race tracks converge into a common finish area for all disciplines. The courses are designed by Didier Defago, and the facility in Narvik is set to become one of the most spectacular venues in the world.
The vertical drop for the men's downhill will be approximately 973 meters. By comparison: Kitzbühel: 860 meters, Kvitfjell: 854 meters and Åre: 870 meters. The men's downhill course will be approximately 3.2 km long, with an estimated run time of about 1 minute and 50 seconds.
Carefully planned with both the World Championships and the long-term operation of the facility in mind, the development at Fagernesfjellet is about more than just the event. Erik Plener, property manager at Narvikfjellet, emphasizes that the upgrades are being built with future generations of ski enthusiasts in mind. – “We are focused on creating a facility that works just as well for everyone after the championship,” he says.
Among the most exciting additions are three new lifts and several improvements to existing slopes. A new six-seater chairlift will connect the top of the Gondola lift to Linken at 1002 mas, while a temporary lift to Andretoppen will serve the men's downhill slopes, making navigation around the facility faster and more efficient. Expanded snow production will now reach all the way up to Linken and Andretoppen, and a new lighting system will enable evening competitions for technical events—a requirement from FIS for TV coverage and spectator accessibility.
Another highlight is the new finish area, designed to accommodate 8,000 spectators. Located between the First Slope and the Family Slope, the area will feature a temporary grandstand and lighting to ensure a spectacular arena for both competitions and events. Spectators will be able to enjoy breathtaking alpine scenes as they cheer on the world’s best skiers, whether along the course or from the grandstand at the finish line.
The new slopes, designed by former Swiss alpine skier Didier Défago, are being tailored specifically for the men’s and women’s courses, requiring precision in snow production and slope design.– “The requirements from FIS are strict, and we will deliver snow that is both consistent and of the highest quality,” explains Ragnar Norum, CEO of Narvikfjellet Allmenn, the owner and developer of the facility.
A key goal of the development is to benefit regular visitors as well. Once the championships are over, Narvikfjellet will offer improved facilities for both year-round
residents and tourists. For recreational skiers, this means easier access to the mountain, faster lift systems, and more snow on more slopes earlier in the season.
– “We are pleased that our everyday visitors will also notice the improvements, both in terms of lifts, snow production, and accessibility,” says Stine Holt, CEO of Narvikfjellet AS.
With a focus on quality and sustainability, Fagernesfjellet is being transformed into one of the most modern alpine centers in Europe. When the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships commence, both athletes and spectators will experience a venue that sets a new standard for the future of alpine sports.
Narvik and Fagernesfjellet look forward to showcasing the best of Northern Norway to the world, offering not only top-tier sports facilities but also the spectacular natural beauty that surrounds the region. This is an investment in the future—a future where ski fans and adventurous visitors can enjoy the magic of winter at its finest.
History
June 4, 2024, marks a significant day for Norway, Northern Norway, and Narvik. After eight years of hard work, Narvik was awarded the Alpine World Championships in 2029 during the International Ski Federation's (FIS) congress in Reykjavik.
From the inception of the idea of hosting a World Championship in 2016 to today, the project has involved intensive efforts. Events such as the Junior World Championships in 2020, the Norwegian Championships in 2017 and 2022, and the European Cup finals in 2023 have been held to demonstrate the capability to host major events. These events have been carried out with excellent evaluations from both FIS and the Norwegian Ski Federation. Additionally, the Narvik delegation has traveled to World Cup events across Europe to conduct crucial international lobbying.
From 2016 until the championship was awarded, approximately NOK 35 million has been spent on this effort, including an FIS application fee of NOK 7.2 million. The work has been largely funded by SpareBank1 Nord-Norge, Sparebanken Narvik, Sparebanken 68° Nord, Nordland County, and the local business community. Without the support of these contributors, it would not have been possible to carry out all the necessary activities.

What is an Alpine World Championship?
An Alpine World Championship is the world's secondlargest winter sports event, surpassed only by the Olympics. Among sports events held in Norway, only the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics have been larger. Some key figures illustrate the scale:
2,500 volunteers
600 hours of TV broadcasting
700,000,000 TV viewers
7,000 beds
75 participating nations
1,300 members of the press
Norway has long been one of the world's leading alpine nations, most recently confirmed during the 2023 World Championships in Méribel/Courchevel, France.
However, despite significant sporting success and recognition, Norway has never succeeded in hosting an Alpine World Championship, apart from the 1952 Oslo Olympics, where the World Championships were included.

NO OTHER SKI DESTINATION CAN OFFER SUCH SPECTACULAR SURROUNDINGS OR A SKI FACILITY THAT LITERALLY PLUNGES INTO THE SEA
Why Narvik?
The choice of Narvik as Norway’s candidate acknowledges that it represents something new for the alpine world. No other ski destination can offer such spectacular surroundings or a ski facility that literally plunges into the sea. The Arctic dimension is captivating, and Narvik's focus on sustainability aims to set a new standard for winter events.
Narvikfjellet Allmenn AS, the owner of the Narvikfjellet facility, is committed to ensuring that the venue will be an attractive arena for both the 2028 finals and the 2029 World Championships, as well as for annual World Cup events, European Cup races, FIS competitions, and children's races starting in 2030.
This development will also foster increased recruitment to the sport, create an attractive destination, and provide the region's population with a top-tier, modern everyday facility.
A Valuable Supplement
Today, only Kvitfjell/Hafjell is equipped to host World Cup events in Norway. The development of Narvikfjellet will not compete with these venues but will complement them, enabling Norway to have two arenas capable of hosting annual World Cup events.
A Historic Day for Narvik
June 4, 2024, will forever be etched in Narvik’s history as a day of triumph. During the 55th FIS Congress in Reykjavik, Iceland, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced that Narvik will host the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships.
A joyful Narvik group gathered after it was announced: Narvik and Norway have been awarded the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships.
⇧ FIS President Johan Eliasch and Rune Edvardsen during the announcement in Reykjavik, with Ski Board President Tove Moe Dyrhaug in the background.
This monumental achievement fulfills a long-held dream for the town and Norwegian alpine skiing. The announcement was met with jubilation from the Narvik delegation, which included notable athletes like Ragnhild Mowinckel and Leif Kristian Haugen, who have contributed significantly to Norway’s alpine legacy.
The tension was palpable at Reykjavik’s Harpa Conference Centre around 10 p.m. as FIS President Johan Eliasch prepared to reveal the host city. When the words “Narvik, Norway” were spoken, the room erupted in celebration. This moment marked the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and vision to bring one of skiing’s most prestigious events to Northern Norway.
“This is a monumental day for Norwegian alpine skiing,” said Tove Moe Dyrhaug, President of the Norwegian Ski Federation. “The FIS World Championships is one of the largest sporting events globally,
viewed by millions. Norway has long been recognized as a leading alpine nation, and now we can finally host the Alpine World Ski Championships on home soil.”
Knut-Eirik Dybdal, Chairman of the Board for the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships, highlighted the collaboration and effort that secured this success.
“Ski-Norway and Northern Norway have lifted this championship project together through close and effective cooperation over many years. We eagerly look forward to the next phase of working with the Norwegian Ski Federation, local municipalities, regional businesses, and many other partners. While we recognize the immense work ahead, our main focus is on delivering a fantastic FIS World Championship.”
2031 Championships Awarded to Val Gardena
In an exceptional move, the FIS Congress also awarded the 2031 Alpine World Ski Championships during this session. Narvik’s
winning bid for 2029 was followed by another moment of anticipation as Eliasch announced Val Gardena, Italy, as the host for 2031.
The Italian delegation, led by Rainer Senoner, celebrated joyously as Val Gardena prepares to host the Alpine World Ski Championships for the second time, the first being in 1970.
NARVIK’S JOURNEY TO 2029
For Narvik, hosting the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships is more than a sporting event—it’s an opportunity to showcase the unique beauty, culture, and spirit of Northern Norway. This will be Norway’s largest sporting event since the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994, solidifying Narvik’s place on the global sports map.
As the countdown begins, the people of Narvik, Norway, and the international skiing community look forward to an unforgettable championship that will highlight the resilience and grandeur of this Arctic town.

Here is the Board for Narvik-VM 2029
The board for Narvik-VM 2029 is now in place. Consisting of seven members, four of whom are local, the board is made up of experienced and highly competent individuals. The chairman is Narvik's own Eirik Frantzen, a central figure in both the application process and the local business community.
On November 28 last year, Ski Federation President Tove Moe Dyrhaug announced the board for the Alpine World Ski Championships, which will take place in Narvik in 2029. A thorough process has been undertaken to find the right candidates for the board, which will play a crucial role in preparing for the event.
– “We are very pleased to have established a board with broad expertise and strong local ties,” says Dyrhaug.

– “We have been focused on assembling a well-rounded board with the expertise and diversity necessary to organize a major international sports event,” explains Dyrhaug.
Following Norway and Narvik's successful bid to host the 2029 Alpine World Ski
Championships, it is now critical to build on the foundation established during the application process. The board reflects a balance between continuity and renewal, with several key figures from the application phase included.
– “The board provides a good balance of continuity and renewal. For many, 2029 may seem far away, but there is a great deal of work that must now be done to ensure the successful execution of the Alpine World Ski Championships,” says Dyrhaug.
The Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik will be Norway's largest sports event since the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994. The federation, as the majority shareholder with 60% ownership in the organizing company Narvik 2029 AS, emphasizes the importance of beginning preparations immediately.
With Narvik’s unique natural surroundings and the local community's engagement as its foundation, this championship is set to be a historic moment for both the town and Norway.
The board was established in late November and consists of the following members: Chairperson:
Eirik Frantzen: CEO of Nordkraft AS, Vice Chair of the applicant company Alpine World Championships 2029.

WSC NARVIK 2029
Building a Future Through Alpine Glory
In June 2024, the announcement that Narvik would host the Alpine World Championships 2029 sent ripples of excitement across Northern Norway. For Narvik, this isn’t just a sporting event—it’s a transformative opportunity to reimagine itself as a thriving hub for tourism, culture, and community development.
At the heart of this ambitious vision lies Narvik 2030, a groundbreaking project that aims to turn the city into a vibrant destination and increase its population to 30,000 by 2040.
Narvik 2030 was initially launched in 2021 following the municipality’s decision to position itself for growth in partnership with Aker's investments in the region. However, with the awarding of the Alpine World Championships, the project evolved into a comprehensive community development initiative.
- This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Narvik, says Ole Tobias Olsen, Project Manager for Narvik 2030.
- We’ve been handed a chance to create something transformative. Hosting the Alpine World Championships is not just about the event itself—it’s about using it as a tool to attract families, professionals, and visitors while creating a vibrant, modern city where people want to live.
The project’s ambitions include everything from increasing the city’s restaurant and hospitality offerings to fostering a sense of community pride.
- Look at Åre in Sweden or Chamonix in France. These destinations have shown how investing in tourism infrastructure can lead to exponential growth. Narvik is bigger, with greater potential, but we need everyone to take part in this journey, adds Olsen.
A CITYWIDE EFFORT
The Alpine World Championships will demand significant effort, both on the slopes and in the city. Narvik Municipality, in partnership with regional and national
stakeholders, is preparing for the challenges ahead. This includes hiring a VM Coordinator to lead the project, hosting public meetings to involve the local community, and working on a “City Floor Strategy” to enhance the urban experience for residents and visitors alike.
- Good hosting begins the moment someone steps off the plane, says Lena Hope, emphasizing the importance of hospitality. Every interaction—from hotel check-ins to municipal services—must reflect the pride and warmth of Narvik.
The municipality also sees the Championships as a chance to redefine Narvik as a year-round tourist destination, bridging the gap between peak tourist days and quieter periods.
- Narvik has a unique charm, but we need to make it a place where people want to stay—not just visit, adds Terje Næsje.
THE ECONOMIC RIPPLE EFFECTS
The potential economic impact of the Alpine World Championships is staggering. A 2022 impact analysis conducted by Menon for Visit Narvik highlighted key benefits:
• Investments in infrastructure and accommodations: NOK 1.5 billion
• Operational costs: NOK 380 million
• Visitor spending: NOK 130 million
• Total value creation: NOK 1.3 billion (50% in Narvik and Northern Norway, 50% nationally)
• Job creation: 450 during construction, 240 during operations, and 100 from visitor spending
The Championships are also expected to accelerate broader infrastructure projects,
IT’S NOT JUST A
PROJECT FOR THE MUNICIPALITY—IT’S FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY, FROM KJØPSVIK IN THE SOUTH TO TROMS IN THE NORTH.
PROJECT MANAGER OLE-TOBIAS OLSEN
⬂ Project Manager Ole-Tobias Olsen and Lena Hope from the Narvik 2030 project are looking forward to the Alpine World Championships in Narvik in 2029.
attract national attention, and enhance the region’s profile as a global ski destination.
Creating Norway’s Answer to Åre
Narvik 2030 aims to leverage the Championships to create a modern Arctic city with a vibrant downtown, a bustling restaurant scene, and infrastructure that supports tourism and livability.
- Hosting a World Championship gives us the opportunity to make Narvik as synonymous with world-class skiing as Åre is in Sweden or Chamonix in France, says Lena Hope, one of the key figures in the project.
Narvik has already begun preparing for this transformation. Investments in Narvikfjellet will turn it into one of the most spectacular ski resorts globally, with a vertical drop exceeding that of Kitzbühel, Åre, and Kvitfjell. Meanwhile, the city is working to address practical challenges, such as extending business hours on Sundays and creating an engaging experience for visitors beyond race times.
A COLLECTIVE EFFORT
For Narvik to succeed, its residents must rally around this vision. From business owners and community leaders to everyday citizens, everyone has a role to play.
- This needs to be locally rooted, stresses Olsen.
- It’s not just a project for the municipality— it’s for the entire community, from Kjøpsvik in the south to Troms in the north.
Narvik 2030 isn’t just about economic growth—it’s about rekindling pride.
- In the 1960s, Narvik was a city people were proud of, Lena Hope says.
- This is our chance to reignite that spirit and show the world what Narvik is capable of.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The Alpine World Championships in 2029 will last only a few days, but their impact could shape Narvik for decades. With a clear vision, dedicated leadership, and community-wide engagement, Narvik is poised to become a beacon of Arctic excellence, setting a new standard for ski destinations worldwide.
As the countdown begins, Narvik is already proving that its ambitions stretch far beyond the slopes—it’s aiming for a future where the entire community thrives.

Wild Rivtind
The jagged ridge of Rivtind can be seen from both Norway and Sweden. The summit's highest point is a mythical peak that few have reached. From the E6 highway, there are six strenuous kilometers of flat marshland leading to the base of the mountain. From the summit, you’ll find descents that rank among the most thrilling in the entire area. While the ridge itself is easy to access, reaching the summit—20 meters above the ridge— requires climbing.

With The Arctic Ski Triple, visitors can seamlessly discover the dramatic fjords and peaks of Narvikfjellet, the legendary offpiste terrain of Riksgränsen, and the familyfriendly charm of Björkliden—all with one ticket. Whether you’re a freerider, a touring enthusiast, or just looking for diverse ski adventures, this collaboration sets the stage for an unforgettable Arctic winter experience.
Glasskiosken –Culinary Mystery in the Heart of Narvik
Located in Frydenlund, Narvik, Glasskiosken is a small restaurant with big ambitions. With just 22 seats, this intimate venue offers a dining experience of the highest caliber, paired with an atmosphere that celebrates northern Norwegian nature, culture, and sustainability.
GLASSKIOSKEN IS MORE THAN A RESTAURANT – IT’S AN ADVENTURE.
Glasskiosken is run by Vegard Stormo, along with Frank Jensen and Henrik Greger Leinan, and has quickly become a gem for food enthusiasts. But there's a twist: the menu is always a secret. Guests have no idea what awaits them until they take their seats.
– Can you reveal anything about the menu?
– No, the only thing I can say is that it’s seasonal. Right now, it’s hunting and slaughter season, Stormo says with a sly smile.
Sustainability is the cornerstone of Glasskiosken’s philosophy. The dishes are crafted using the best local ingredients,
often sourced or produced by the chefs themselves. Stormo, with a passion for seafood, often leaves the kitchen to check his own halibut gear, a personal endeavor that frequently finds its way onto the plates at Glasskiosken.
Offering only a three-course menu that changes with the seasons, and opening exclusively for reservations, Glasskiosken provides an exclusive dining experience unlike anything else in the region. Here, culinary creativity meets sustainability and local roots, making every visit an unforgettable journey.
Glasskiosken is more than a restaurant – it’s an adventure. For those seeking the unique, the northern, and the mysterious, this is a destination not to be missed.

Museums in the Region
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CITY AND THE REGION, A VISIT TO ONE OF THE LOCAL MUSEUMS SHOULD BE ON YOUR ITINERARY
Narvik War Museum
The Narvik War Museum focuses on the Battle of Narvik during the dramatic days of April 1940, offering insight into the naval and mountain battles that took place over 62 intense days. Through exhibitions featuring artifacts, interactive digital displays, texts, and photographs, the museum illustrates the Nazi invasion and occupation and connects this history to the post-war period and the present day.
The exhibitions encourage reflection on themes such as "us" versus "the others," the value of human life, and the importance of understanding war to build peace.
The museum also offers tailored experiences for children and youth, such as "Kids at the War Museum" and "FamilyFriendly Bunker Walks" in underground Nazi bunkers.
Ballangen Museum
Located in the old administration building of the mining company Bjørkaasen Gruber, a distinguished structure from 1919, the Ballangen Museum is worth a visit for its architecture alone.
For years, the lifeblood of the Ballangen community was the mining industry, and naturally, the museum’s main theme is mining history. With a unique collection of artifacts, visitors gain insight into the community’s golden era, as well as its farming culture, schools, and domestic life.
Narvik Museum
Visit the Narvik Museum, located in one of the city's most beautiful buildings with a stunning garden. The museum introduces visitors to the city's origins and its dramatic development.
The main focus is on industrial history: the construction of the Ofoten Railway, the transport of iron ore by train, the shipping of the ore, and the city's evolution over more than a century.
The museum is housed in the former administration building of the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), a monumental stone building erected in 1902, situated in scenic surroundings. From the museum and its garden, visitors can enjoy views of the harbor, loading facilities, and large parts of the city.
Kjøpsvik Museum
Museum Nord – Divtasvoudna/Tysfjord, Kjøpsvik, consists of two buildings: Helland’s Building and the old sheriff’s residence. Exhibitions are spread across both buildings, focusing on mining and industrial history, cave discoveries, fishing and farming culture, domestic life, war history, and education.
In 1918, Nordland Portland Cement Factory (NPC) began operations in Kjøpsvik, transforming the village entirely. The museum features many artifacts connected to the cement factory and other unique items, including a nearly intact 1970s kitchen in the old sheriff's house.
Narvik Vehicle History Museum
The Narvik Vehicle History Museum showcases the rich history of vehicles in the region. Themes include everyday automobiles, camper vans, roadside culture, bus and taxi history, ferries, and bridges. The museum also features a miniature representation of the Ofoten Railway.
Read more about this museum elsewhere in this edition of Magasin Narvik.
THE MOTHER OF COULOIRS
Gangnesaksla in Sør-Skjomen offers one of the most spectacular snow couloirs in the region, descending directly from the peak toward the fjord below. Known and respected within the freeride community, this run is both steep and long, framed dramatically by towering rock walls on either side. The reputation of Gangnesaksla is well-earned; it's an intense and thrilling descent, perfect for those seeking a serious freeride experience. With 1,100 meters of pure downhill skiing, it provides an unforgettable journey from summit to sea, blending adrenaline with awe-inspiring natural beauty.
