3 INTRODUCTION
Discovering Vanuatu The only way to experience Vanuatu is to throw yourself in and embrace its charms. Adventure tourism has taken off on the main island of Efate and, according to the Vanuatu Tourism Office, more travellers are also venturing beyond the gateway of Port Vila to explore the delights of Tanna, Espiritu Santo and the outer islands. The fiery Tanna offers rugged adventure and a cultural journey perfect for active travellers seeking a destination still off the beaten track, while Espiritu Santo provides idyllic white sand beaches for those after a beach holiday, as well as waterfalls and rainforests for a soft adventure twist. But those who choose to stay on the island of Efate, where the main city of Port Vila is located, will be confronted with activities like waterfall abseiling, diving, kayaking, biking and hiking. To give you an idea of the enormous array of activities on offer on the island, turn to page 14 for the A-Z of Efate. As numbers to the gateway grow, a beautification project for Port Vila’s seafront
is underway to cater for the increasing number of cruise visitors. The overhaul of Port Vila’s harbourside infrastructure means the town area will become more accessible and create an attractive seafront for tourists and locals. The facelift will begin from the Grand Hotel and Casino, running all the way to Chantilly’s on the Bay. “This project was developed by the Department of Tourism as part of its role in improving the image of Port Vila,” says Vanuatu Department of Tourism senior product development officer Adela Issachar. “The key focus for the project is on improving the Port Vila main wharf as the area can become challenging for public transport and market queuing on cruise ship days.” Other plans under the infrastructure project include re-designing the market building, located near Nambawan Café, to provide improved visibility and accessibility, and improving Fatumaru Park’s infrastructure and walkways. The local currency is the vatu and it is recommended that this is purchased in Vanuatu for the best rate of exchange. Clients can exchange their money at Bauerfield Airport, Goodies Money Exchange, the Seven Eleven, Global & Exchange, hotels or local banks. New Zealand cash is readily exchanged. Travellers’ cheques and most major credit cards are also widely accepted in Port Vila.
Clients should take insect repellent and sun block – especially if they are visiting more remote parts of the island or beaches. Also recommend clients pack a light jacket for evenings, walking shoes and reef shoes if they are planning on reef walking.
Air Vanuatu runs regular flights to the popular islands of Tanna and Espiritu Santo, with at least daily services. It is best to book in advance.
Getting around Driving is on the right-hand side of the road and cars and vans are available for hire from companies such as World Car Rental and Budget Car Hire. The mini-buses are a great way for clients to get around Port Vila – they just need to flag one down (tell them to look for the B on the number plate) and can be taken anywhere around the city. The fare is 150 vatu a trip for
There are over 120 distinct languages and many more dialects in Vanuatu but only three official languages – English, French and Bislama(pidgin English).
Inter-island travel
Visas New Zealand passport holders do not require a visa for Vanuatu, but must have a valid, ongoing or return airline ticket and passport valid for six months beyond their intended stay.
Medical Clients do not need vaccinations, but antimalarial medication is recommended if they are travelling to islands outside of Efate. There are several private doctors and hospitals in Port Vila and Luganville. There are no dangerous animals and urban water is safe to drink.

The cruisey loop around the island offers visitors the opportunity to be as intrepid or cautious as they like while simultaneously showcasing Efate’s natural beauty and the unique culture of the island. First thing you’ll need is a hire car. There’s no shortage of firms offering 4X4s for around NZ$100 a day. Construction on the loop was recently completed, so the road is fully sealed, but we’d still advise opting for a four-wheel drive as the journey will see you manoeuvring through the occassional tight corner and undertaking a number of vertiginous
mountainous climbs. Once clear of the touristy main centre, Efate opens its arms and its wonders to you. If you gunned it you could be there and back again in around two hours, but you won’t want to do that. Instead allow at least half a day for the leisurely drive. You don’t want to be clock watching when passing another spot that begs you to stop. Once on the road the only directions you need are ‘follow your nose’ as it’s quite impossible to get lost on the single ring road, and the only advice you need is to relax into your journey. Rushing isn’t a concept on Vanuatu so we suggest fully embracing this more relaxed mindset. Among the many places along the way
that will pique your interest and are worth stopping at are the Blue Lagoon, a popular and quite lush swimming spot, the thermal Hot Springs - if you can handle the heat - and the magnificently located Wahoo Bar which is home to some of the best seafood on the island. The drive will also take you through many small Ni-Vanuatu villages, showcasing a way of life a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Most of these have a makeshift roadside market stall you can stop at if you need to stock up on bottled water or supplies during your travels. Another common feature of each village is the small clusters of folks lazing away the day

on the roadside. As you drive through watch out for chooks, goats and pigs who all tend to enjoy wandering haphazardly onto the road. The drive is incredibly scenic and sees you passing through spindly coconut plantations, deeply overgrown forest and trundling alongside stretches of dramatic coastline. It’s also incredibly populated; locals spring out of the bush carrying giant machetes and bags of produce, procured from deep within the vegetation, and you’ll regularly pass groups of people walking along the road. A flash of a smile and a cheery wave goes a long way and is always reciprocated. There’s much more to see on Efate than just Port Vila, so why not spend an afternoon out on the highway looking for adventure?

To The Summit A couple’s passion for tropical plants has led to the opening of the largest tropical garden in the South Pacific. Although it opened only recently, work on The Summit Gardens commenced in 2001 and is still considered a work in progress. After multiple visits to Bali, Java and Malaysia, Australians Jim and Lesley Batty developed a love for tropical gardens, and once they set eyes on The Summit’s amazing views they decided this was their golden opportunity to create something spectacular. Eleven gardens are now spread across 10 hectares. Each garden is distinctly different and visitors are able to experience them as if walking through a kind of labyrinth, all joined by a single pathway. Water plants, succulents, orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, palms and cycads, vines, creepers, nut and fruit trees and numerous other plants are on display, all inspired by the tropical gardens of Asia, Australia and America. At nearly 200 metres above sea level, the gardens offer views over Mele Bay. The high escarpment overlooks the volcanic black sand beach at Mele and Hideaway Island, with Port Vila about 10km away in the distance. The Summit also has its own sandalwood plantation of Santalum austrocaledonicum, orchids of Tahitian limes, mandarins, tangelos, tamanu, ylang ylang, vetiver grass, lemongrass and ginger gardens. Visitors to The Summit can view the craftspeople distilling ingredients and making soaps and other products. Make sure clients take the tour of the working essential oil distillery before heading to the gift shop for The Summit’s health and body products. thesummitvanuatu.com

Go beyond snorkelling Ocean Walker Vanuatu has introduced a new way to get up close and personal with Port Vila’s underwater world – without getting your head wet. The Helmet Dive is considered the next step after snorkelling. The underwater observation helmet is air fed from the surface from compressed air tanks and the air delivery is controlled by a panel operated from the surface. PADI qualified staff will provide a brief introduction and give instructions on what to do and what to expect. Clients will then start their adventure with a short boat ride to the platform, walk down a ramp into the water where the purpose-built helmet is lowered onto their shoulders, then they will spend up to 20 minutes walking on the sea floor to a maximum depth of four metres. The “dive” takes place in Port Vila Harbour. Each zipline is longer than the last with a 200-metre-long finish 80 metres above the canyon, crossing a waterfall. A word of advice: do look down! The ziplines whiz through rainforests that eventually open up to magnificent views of Mele Bay and Hideaway Island. The view has to be seen to be believed so keep your eyes open at all times. Vanuatu’s waters, especially those off Santo Island, are a playground for divers, with cliffs, grottoes, overhangs, caves, tunnels and abundant sea life to explore. Divers are surrounded by sea fans, soft corals and Acropora gardens, plate corals, sponges and thousands of fish. The waters off Santo Island are a particularly desired spot as they are littered with the remnants and wrecks of World War Two – giving divers lots to explore and some of the most accessible dive sites in the world. The biggest attraction in Vanuatu is the SS President Coolidge – one of the largest wreck dives in the world. The 22,000-ton luxury liner, which was then converted to a troop ship, sank fully laden during the war, just a few metres off the beach. US troops based themselves in Vanuatu during World War Two, so they could launch a counter-offensive against Japanese troops in the Pacific. When the Coolidge entered the Santo harbour on October 26, 1942, information about safe entry was accidentally omitted from the sailing orders. A military base had been established on Santo and the harbour was heavily protected by mines. A mine struck the ship at the engine room and moments later, a second mine hit her near the stern. Captain Henry Nelson ran the Coolidge aground and ordered troops to abandon ship. Not believing the ship would sink, troops were told to leave all of their belongings behind. Over 5000 men got off safely but there were two casualties – Fireman Robert Reid and Captain Elwood J. Euart. The Coolidge now rests on her port side with her bow at a depth of 20m and her stern at 70m. The front holds are still jammed with the machinery of war and guns, helmets, gas masks and personal effects are scattered across the

Nautilus Scuba Villa 25 dive school CREDIT: Villa 25 promenade deck and bow. The wreck is considered one of the most accessible in the world because of the warm waters and good visibility. The Coolidge is suitable for both novice and advanced divers with novices able to dive the shallow sections of the wreck. Most reefs begin in shallow water (10m or less) and drop away to varying depths – and the statue of The Lady, a porcelain relief of a lady riding a unicorn, is at 39m. As the Blarney Stone of Coolidge, it is a tradition to kiss The Lady but, as she is so far down and lying on her side, this is not as easy as it sounds. Many divers are reluctant to take the regulator out of their mouths, but for clients who are, make sure they get a photo to prove it. Near The Lady is also the First Class lobby, library and continental lounge with an Italian mosaic fountain, porthole skylights and brass ceiling lights. Many dive operators who do the Coolidge dive also do night dives where divers are surrounded by a show of flashlight fish.
For dedicated divers who enjoy sailing, longer cruises through the islands further north of Efate are available. They can dive the famous Tongoa Wall (the edge of a live volcano) or the Maskelyne Islands. Million Dollar Point is another attraction; a national park which divers can explore that is littered with ships, cranes, bulldozers and trucks which were dumped by the US troops at the end of the war. Also in Santo is the smaller wreck, the USS Tucker, which can be explored in a single dive. Tucker struck a mine on August 5, 1942, which exploded and broke the ship’s back. The next morning another ship attempted to tow it into shallower water to salvage what was left, but the efforts soon failed and Tucker jack-knifed and sank in 10 fathoms. The minefield had been laid by United States forces only the day before and its existence had not yet been radioed to the ship. Three men were killed in the explosion and another three listed as missing.
Nautilus caters for beginner and seasoned scuba divers and offers PADI and advanced open-water courses as well as Discover Scuba. Dives include reef dives, wreck dives and drift and cavern dives.
Tranquillity Bay Dive Centre Based on Moso Island off Efate, Tranquillity Bay Dive Centre takes divers to over 18 different dive sites. Reef and drop-off diving are their specialties and most are boat dives, though shore dives and night dives are available on request.
Allan Power Dive Tours Allan Power Dive Tours is located in the main town, Luganville, on Espiritu Santo. They take divers to the SS President Coolidge with a team of seven full-time dive guides. They are a PADI Resort member with a range of courses from Introductory – Open Water through to Divemaster and Nitrox is also available.
Aquamarine Espiritu Santo Based on Santo, Aquamarine offers PADI diving, instructor training, dive facilities and shop. Guides can offer descents of up to 60m on the SS President Coolidge and more than 20 dives around the wreck as well as trips to other wrecks and sites are offered.

23 GOLF
Hole in one Port Vila Golf and Country Club It’s true that Vanuatu isn’t known for its golfing, yet. That’s beginning to change however as golfers from all around the world continue to spread the good word about the quality and scenic beauty of the island’s courses. Golfing on Vanuatu truly caters for everyone; from those just wanting a casual hit around with their mates to keen golfers chasing that everelusive par. Golfing on the main island of Efate puts paid to Mark Twain’s famous saying that golf is a nice walk spoilt. That’s because many of the island’s courses offer spectacular ocean views and unique obstacles that will awe, challenge and inspire players of all levels as they make their way around the greens. Suggest clients visit one of three courses located in Port Vila, depending on their ability.
Those at the top of their game will want to book a round in at the Port Vila Golf and Country Club. The club is home to the PGA sanctioned Tusker Vanuatu Golf Open and its 18-hole seaside course is regarded as the island’s premier golfing experience. As well as providing a stiff, pro-level challenge it also affords splendid views of the incredibly scenic Hideaway Island. If you don’t have time for a full game but still fancy working on your swing, the club’s driving range should be just the ticket.
Warwick Le Lagon If all that seems a little daunting an attractive alternative is the 12-hole course at Warwick Le Lagon Resort. Play on this hillside course overlooks the gorgeous waters of both the Coral Sea and the stunning Erakor Lagoon
ensuring a remarkable round of golf you’ll remember for years to come. The course is a brief 10-minute drive from Port Vila and those whose partners aren’t keen on an afternoon’s golfing may choose to take the opportunity to avail themselves of the resort’s spa facilities instead.
Holiday Inn Another favourite is only three minutes away from the town centre at the Holiday Inn Resort and Casino. The nine-hole course is on fabulously landscaped grounds that are right on the water’s edge. It’s a course that will test the chipping skills of even the most hardened players with its natural lagoon water traps and greens that lie across the waters on a small peninsula. Impulse golfers need not miss out as clubs are available for hire, as are motorised golf carts.

30 OUTER ISLANDS
Vanuatu’s outer islands Air Vanuatu has regular flights to the other islands in Vanuatu. Their appeals all differ from one another as each has its own distinct culture and language. Here is a list of some of Vanuatu’s outer islands, each with their own tourism highlights.
Ambae Ambae is best known as home to one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes – Manaro. The adventurous can check out the island’s crater lakes and tropical rainforests. This island was the inspiration for the island of Bali Hai in James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific.
Ambrym Home to twin volcanoes, Mt Marum and Mt Benbow, Ambrym is a trekker’s paradise. Both volcanoes are still active and continuously spit lava from the craters. Volcano walks start from Lalinda or Ranon. Ambrym is also famous for the sorcery practiced by its inhabitants, as well as its carvings in wood, stone and fern, and its custom dancing. Air Vanuatu flies to Ambrym five times per week. Pentecost

OUTER ISLANDS
Aneityum Anatom has more than 80 species of orchards, several waterfalls and hot springs, and is the southernmost inhabited island. Idyllic beaches and waterfalls are among its natural appeals.
One popular day trip is Suva Beach, which is accessible only by a canoe or speedboat, with a guide. Two airstrips are located at Dillons Bay and Ipota.
Epi
Gaua
In Epi, the coral reefs are an ideal spot to get a peek at the shy dugongs (sea cows). One in particular is known to swim with snorkellers. It has in-shore reefs which are perfect for snorkelling, white and black beaches and due to the volcanic activity, rugged terrain covered in tropical rainforest. There are two hot springs at the village of Votlo and a health centre at Vaemali. The island also has a variety of wildlife, coconut plantations and two air strips.
Waterfalls, beaches and volcanoes are the main attractions in Gaua, located in the north. Mount Gharat is an active volcano in the centre of the island, which last erupted in 2011. Within it lies Lake Letas, the largest lake in Vanuatu, and to the east of the lake is Siri Waterfall. Various coastal villages are scattered throughout the island of 2491 people. The largest village is Jolap on the west coast. The island is also known as Santa Maria.
Erromango
Maewo
One of the best islands for walking or trekking, Erromango has a range of tracks available. The island is mainly made up of forest, mountains and caves which are famous for their ancient hand drawings.
This green island has plentiful vegetation, stunning waterfalls and the highest rainfall of all of Vanuatu’s islands. The island is famous for its secret societies and traditional dancing.
Malekula Malekula is Vanuatu’s second largest island and is famous for its tribes – the Big Nambas and Small Nambas. In August each year the island celebrates the Nalawan Festival which consists of traditional dances and food preparation. This island is also famous for its beautiful white and black sand beaches, waterfalls and caves. Walkers can take the Manbush Trail that runs across the island from the south east to the south west coast. There are 28 languages spoken throughout the island.
Pentecost The island of Pentecost has become famous for its land diving ritual, which influenced the invention of bungy jumping. The ritual, which takes place every April and May, celebrates the yam harvest and sees local men and boys jump from a 20 to 30-metre high manmade tower with only a vine attached to their legs. The vines are carefully selected by jumpers who know that 10 centimetres may be the difference between life and death.
