FROM THE PUBLISHER
Our expanded History Section has lots of new information with a focus on 1958-1976. The article is called “Building the Critical Mass – the Joel Cowan Years”. Joel Cowan always reminds the audience, “it is not about the buildings, but the people and the social institutions” – he calls that the Critical Mass. • The “green belts” were preserved from the beginning to provide about 25% natural land, providing for many natural parks and our path system. • Flat Creek was turned into beautiful Lake Peachtree. • Flat Creek swamp was turned into a golf course. • Land for churches was given free to those who would build and occupy in one year. • Lakeside lot sales were restricted to full time residents – people who would become part of the Critical Mass. They would go to the local churches, join the newly organized civic organizations and participate in self-government. • Industry was brought in to provide jobs and revenue – but kept on the west side. • Land was given free to build Falcon Field and the schools. These are some of the reasons why today “we love to call Peachtree City Home”. GET READY FOR THE DRAGON BOATS! D
ragon Boats have entered the Peachtree City culture. Colorful and exciting to watch, they glide along Lake Peachtree to the beat of their own drum— literally. The low, booming of the dragon boat drummer beats out the rhythm of the oars. Rowed by a growing number of enthusiastic Peachtree City residents, the boats and paddlers ready themselves for the yearly Dragon Boat races which have become a signature event of September. This year’s highly anticipated Dragon Boat Festival is expected to draw about 3,000 spectators to Drake Field to watch the racing competition on Lake Peachtree. Now in its 12th year, the festival is bigger and better than ever. There are over 38 racing teams and 1,000 participants in the races. Besides the main dragon boat competition, there are races for “braggin’ rights” like the Mayor’s Cup, and for special organizations, like the Breast Cancer Survivors and Special Olympians. There are at least 11 food trucks, including Your Pie, the Beirut, Basil Boss Pizza, and Classic Kettle Corn; nine cultural exhibits to add an international flair to the festival; 6 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 |
and nine artisans, like 4 Direction Native American Traders and Five Buck Jewelry Truck. Entertainment on the Gazebo stage throughout the day includes Lisa Kelly singers, various dance groups, and a fashion show. New this year: a Car Show displaying all makes and models of cars presented by members of Cars & Coffee Peachtree City, and a Kids’ Corner with activities and entertainment for kids, including a special reptile program. This year’s event sponsors include Rinnai (Signature) and Panasonic Automotive, Eaton, and The Barn Group Land Trust (Golden Dragon). All festival proceeds impact the community and charity partners—the Rotary Club of Peachtree City, Real Life Center, The Eden Project, and the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. The event is “rain or shine.” There is ample parking at the churches along Willowbend Road, but, of course, the best mode of transportation for Peachtree City residents is a golf cart!

Building the Critical Mass– the Joel Cowan Years 1958-1976 Part 3 continued from Spring/Summer 2019 -- By Charlie Nelson with special assistance from Rebecca Watts.
n Recap of Spring/Summer 2019 issue – the birth of the “New Town” In the Spring/Summer 2019 issue of our magazine, we reviewed how a vision of a New Town in Fayette County came out of a meeting on June 6, 1956 between Peter S. Knox, Jr. and Willard Byrd that changed the face of south metro Atlanta forever. After that meeting, Peter Knox, Jr. took charge of the project. Joel Cowan was hired by “Mr. Pete” in June 1957, the summer before his senior year at Georgia Tech, for one year. Working out of his company furnished apartment, and being paid in Fayette County Development Corporation (FCDC) stock, his job was to oversee the 48 contracts on the land. When a land owner had a problem, Floy Farr would arrange a meeting between the land owner and Cowan in the Tyrone bank office. Cowan’s job was to keep all of the contracts active and the land owners happy. During his employment by FCDC, the young Cowan kept the books, attended FCDC board meetings and learned all the details about the planned New Town and became infatuated with the new concept. His contract ended the next year – June 1958, which is also when he graduated from Georgia Tech. The FCDC was broke, and the promised stock was worthless, so he was given 60 acres of land for both his work and to incentivize him to build a house and move there in 1958. The FCDC had no funds to hire Cowan when he graduated, but “Mr. Pete” decided to hire him to work for his company, Knox Homes, to develop housing on military bases. n The transfer of ownership – the Joel Cowan Years 1958 -1979 After graduation in July 1958, Cowan began working in the Atlanta office of Knox Homes. He was paid $600/ month to assist Mr. Pete in doing estimates and working on projects. On his own time, he continued to seek a major investor to buy the land from the FCDC investors, including Mr. Pete. From July 1958 until July 1959, Cowan wore both hats – paid by Knox Homes and unpaid FCDC manager seeking proper financing. During that period, Cowan continued to work with the land owners, Farr, and the FCDC to keep the project going while being paid only by Knox Homes. Since the FCDC was broke, the investor group was simply looking for a land buyer to get their money back. So, Cowan began his search through networking in Atlanta. One of these contacts knew a New York broker who introduced Bessemer Securities of New York. Bessemer required an option before they would come down to visit. So, when Cowan called Mr. Pete for approval and to get the price to sell the 12,000 acres, Mr. Pete answered by simply saying, “Joel, you have carte-blanche”. He had to look up the meaning of that! From that time on, Cowan was on his own and was the only person to represent FCDC in the sale to Bessemer. Continued next page

>> peachtree city HISTORY
First Phase Map of Peachtree City published by Bessemer Properties Incorporated, circa 1963. Only 3 houses on the lake with iconic Water Tower in the photo. Only 3 companies in the Industrial Park. Golf Course is in the future plan.
Bessemer agreed to visit, and this led to the ultimate transaction. Before it was consummated, the legislation to create the city was introduced. The State Legislature approved House Bill 242 creating the city and naming Cowan as its first mayor. Governor Ernest Vandiver signed it into law on March 9, 1959.
The question facing Cowan on July 30, 1959 was: Now what do we do first and where will this lead?
On July 30, 1959 a new corporation, Peachtree Corp of Georgia, was formed jointly by Henry Phipps Estates (owned by Bessemer) and the Fayette County Development Corporation. Henry Phipps Estates purchased the land surrounding the center of town enabling the FCDC debt to be satisfied. FCDC put in the center land. Bessemer put in $435,000 to enable the first stages of development. Peachtree Corp of Georgia was then owned 51% Bessemer and 49% FCDC with no outstanding land options.
For Cowan, New Town was never about building another subdivision, it was about creating the critical mass of a city, with all that implies. From that point, regular forprofit development could occur.
The Board of Directors of Peachtree Corp of Georgia, was headed by Peter Knox, Jr (Mr. Pete) representing FCDC. Other directors included Julian Roberts (FCDC); James F. Riley, Jr (Bessemer VP); R. Daniel Saxe, Jr. (Bessemer’s in-house counsel; John Izard, Jr (Atlanta attorney with Spalding, Sibley, Troutman, Meadow and Smith- later named King & Spalding). In 1962, the Peachtree Corp of Georgia was liquidated and merged into its parent company – Bessemer Properties Inc. of Palm Beach FL, which was owned by Bessemer Securities Corp NY, NY. n Peachtree City has a new developer and Joel Cowan has a new job! On July 30, 1959 Cowan was no longer employed by Knox Homes, but was the Manager of the newly-formed PCoG. At the same time, he remained Mayor of the new Peachtree City. For the first time since he began working on the New Town project, all the debts were paid off, and there was money in the bank. He also had the basic original plan as designed by Byrd.
n Joel Cowan’s concept of Critical Mass is put into action.
Anytime Cowan speaks about the early development of Peachtree City, he always instructs the listener that it’s not about the buildings, but it is about the people and the social institutions – he calls that the Critical Mass. He recently explained the idea of Critical Mass in the following way, “This mainly means the infrastructure of a small town with enough people to support an independent city government; a community church, a civic club and industries. The commercial structure was especially people dependent - so a small grocery store, a pharmacy and a bank were also needed.” He concluded by saying, “Each step was part of that ladder and people dependent. The things that money could build were done…Lake Peachtree, a subdivision, a water system (with a giant water tank for symbolism). He was determined to hold off “frontage type” developments forcing inside activities. This included not selling lake frontage to second home buyers…but rather community builders. All highway frontage was deferred, including the intersection of Highways 54 & 74. The development “test” was met satisfactorily, and Bessemer increased its investment. The critical mass development continued as his all-important job. With consultation and financial help from the parent company Bessemer Securities, Cowan continued building infrastructure that would best produce that critical mass. In 1969, he agreed to place the first advertisement in the Atlanta newspapers for normal sales – until then it was word of mouth, and the public knew very little about Peachtree City’s existence. n The Valleys were the basis of the original plan! FCDC’s original land plan by Byrd took into account that the two valleys formed by Line Creek and Flat Creek, which flowed North to South, intersected at the southern end, making it the natural location for central sewage system as it exists today.
In 1966, Peachtree City applied for federal funds to construct Falcon Field. The Bessemer Corporation donated 100 acres south of the town's industrial park, and by 1969, the airstrip, 50 feet wide and 3,000 feet long, was being constructed, paved, and lighted. Joel Cowan was instrumental in bringing Falcon Field to Peachtree City.
First Spillway
The first dam was built soon after Bessemer/FCDC formed the Peachtree Corp of Georgia which provided the needed funds. The first dam was designed by a prominent Atlanta engineering company and built by Joel Cowan and Chip Conner, but it was breached in a storm soon after and replaced with the one in this picture. The dam in the picture formed Lake Peachtree and was intact until it was replaced by the present spillway completed last year.

| PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 |
Those valleys had streams and swamps at the center, and they provided natural green space throughout the city, as well as the location of Lake Peachtree and Lake McIntosh. Especially in the beginning, Lake Peachtree became a central selling feature for the new city, but in a practical sense it provided water needed by the people and industry. n Peachtree City began to be a city of Firsts! The ink was not dry on the PCoG contract when Cowan, the new Manager-Mayor, began to work on building a dam to create Lake Peachtree. The original plan called for the dam to be on the north side of Hwy 54, but there were many problems with that location: the dam had to be too wide and would cost a lot more to build and maintain, and on a somewhat humorous tone, there were persistent beavers who would replace one of their dams overnight each time it was blown up by Cowan’s new dynamite device. This area became Flat Creek Golf Course instead. A new site for the dam had to be found, which was on the south end of the valley where the present dam is today. d

>> peachtree city HISTORY In 1966 Ralph Jones, Mayor, gave the OK to “Brother Leach” the head of the Peachtree City Volunteer Fire Department to purchase a used firetruck from the City of East Point for $3,000. Jones wrote the check for the firetruck from his personal account to make the purchase, with the understanding that the Volunteers would hold a fundraiser to repay him. The purchase was prompted by the poor service that was then provided by Fayette County Fire Department which was limited by poor communications, rural roads and limited personnel. In those early years the county fire trucks generally arrived too late to put out the fire.
First Priority Summer 1959:
BUILD THE DAM AND CREATE LAKE PEACHTREE • Timeline: July 30, 1959 –1962 • n 1959 Building the dam and Lake Peachtree. *1) note. The basic roads needed to be built, as well as buried utility lines, sewage and water lines, and the Sewage Plant and Water Tower. n 1960 With the critical help of Floy Farr, Joel Cowan mediated a deal between the Coweta-Fayette EMC & Georgia Power. Georgia Power began to sell their power to industries in the park and the central residential area west of Lake Peachtree. *2) note. n 1961 First Election, 75 people voting, Joel Cowan elected Mayor – 1961- 1966. n 1961 First Home on the Lake was built by Jim and Miriam Fulton. Miriam Fulton became the first person to sell real estate in Peachtree City. n 1962 Bessemer/Phipps purchased the FCDC’s 49% stock to give it full control of the Peachtree Corporation
of Georgia. Subsequently, Peachtree Corporation of Georgia was liquidated and merged into Bessemer Properties Inc. of Palm Beach FL. which was owned by Bessemer Securities Corp NY of New York. Notes of clarification: *1 – A conversation at the general store with Hugh Huddleston led Cowan and his newly- hired project manager Chip Conner to see the value of placing the dam in its present location. At that location the dam could be built in a naturally narrow section of the creek. *2 – Georgia Power was all important in promoting industrial developments throughout Georgia. So, a deal was needed for EMC to allow Georgia Power the territory covering the first village. Farr masterfully got agreement from the Coweta-Fayette EMC to this plan, which was the first of its kind in the state of Georgia. Dixie Frozen Foods was the first industry brought to Peachtree City in 1960 - it was near the location of the present-day shopping area "The Avenue," later developed by Cousins, but not on Hwy 54 which was being reserved for other types of retail businesses. Continued on page 12
The first home, far right in this photo, appeared in the Bessemer Properties brochure. It was built by Jim and Miriam Fulton who had a young family and was seeking a place on a lake. The land was swapped for stock that Miriam owned in the failed company Fayette County Development Corporation on the condition that the Fulton family would build a home on the lot and occupy it within one year. Miriam became the first real estate sales person in Peachtree City. www.peachtreecitymagazine.com | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 | 11

It was later transferred to PTC airport authority. n 1966 All Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Myron "Brother" Leach *5) note. n 1967 Peachtree City Elementary was planned and built with Bessemer funds. It was then leased to Fayette County for students in west Fayette. Originally planned for 500 students, it began 1969 with 426 students. n 1967 First Civic Organization-Rotary Club of Peachtree City sponsored by the Rotary Club of Newnan. First President was Luther Glass. n 1968 First Baptist Church members were meeting in the Peachtree City Elementary School. In 1972, the church began construction, with the Rev Bill Delay as pastor. n 1968 Flat Creek Country Club and Golf Course. Opened on Labor Day. *6) Note n 1970 Chip Conner elected mayor - he served through 1971. n 1971 First medical office opened by Dr. Henry Drake and Dr. Mildred Keene. 12 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 |
n 1972 Howard Morgan elected mayor- he served through 1977. n 1972 Peachtree City Police Department established with Haskell Barber as Chief. n 1972 Post Office opened, and Peachtree City given its own Zip Code, 30269 n 1972 First Pedestrian Bridge opened over Hwy 54 near First Baptist Church. n 1972 Morgan Guaranty loaned $6 million for PTC's Aberdeen Village including construction of the shopping center. n 1972 Garden Cities Corporation was created as a subsidiary of Phipps Land. *7) note. Notes of clarification: *3–The Interdenominational Community Chapel formed in October 1964. It held services in the new municipal building, and the Rev. Cobb Ware served as pastor. In 1966 the Presbyterian Church was formed by 25 members of the Community Chapel with the Rev. Donald Smith serving as Pastor. First elders were Joel Cowan, Chip Conner, Ralph Jones, and Luther Glass. The congregation met in the municipal building and individual homes until 1971, when they moved into their present Willowbend location on land donated by the developer. *4–The Redwine Bank of Tyrone (Farr was the manager) was purchased by Bessemer and renamed Fayette State Bank with Farr as manager and Cowan Chairman of the Board - bank was moved from Tyrone to Hwy 54 and Northlake Dr. *5– First fire truck purchased second hand from East Point with $3,000 check drawn against the personal bank account of Mayor Ralph Jones to be paid back later through fundraisers. *6-–Members wanted to buy their own golf carts instead of renting them from the club. Controversy was resolved, and the Georgia law had to be changed in 1974 to allow carts to drive on the streets. This led to the development of our extensive multi-uses path system. *7-–Bessemer/Phipps Land created Garden Cities to make the Equitable financing: Joel Cowan, President of Phipps Land was president, and Bob Bevins was the VP and Property Manager for Garden Cities.

>> peachtree city HISTORY First Golf Cart Parade on 4th of July, 1975. In 1974 when Governor Jimmy Carter signed legislation making it legal to drive a golf cart on city streets it produced a needed breakthrough for residents to own their own golf carts and use them for transportation – not just golf.
In 1972 the first pedestrian bridge was built across Hwy 54. The bridge shown in this photo replaced the first bridge that was made of timber and hit by a truck. Photo appeared on the Phipps Land Annual Report of 1972.

Shakerag Festival. Photos courtesy of Peachtree City
SHAKERAG FESTIVAL Peachtree City’s longest running annual event, the Shakerag Festival, planned this year for September 21-22, has been going strong for 42 years. This twoday event brings to residents a weekend of unique arts and crafts and food vendors from all over Georgia and neighboring states. About 110 artists will display their wares. You will find pottery, oil and watercolor paintings, hand-sewn creations, ceramics, photography, and holiday decor. Waddell Leather makes handmade leather goods like belts, wallets, and guitar straps. Lalu Designs has unique jewelry designs, using handmade beads and freshwater pearls. Lashley Woodcrafts offers cypress outdoor furniture like swings, gliders, and rockers. Chris Southern Draw creates pencil drawings of unique and local landmarks in Peachtree City and surrounding areas, and Wally Bee’s Honey Inc. sells honey edibles, beeswax candles, and lip balms. Nine food vendors will be on the grounds, including the Peanut Man, TCBY, Just Smoke N Around BBQ, and
Mama’s Lemonade. There will be a DJ for music, and, as always, plenty of activities for children in the Kid’s Korner—bouncy houses, face painting, arts and crafts activities, carnival-style games, and the popular balloon lady! About 6,000 visitors are expected at this year’s festival, which will take place at its traditional location of Shakerag Knoll in the McIntosh Trail Recreational Complex. The festival is open Saturday, 10am-6pm and Sunday, 12-5pm. peachtree-city.org. NIGHT MARKET This free, public market features artists, music, entertainment, and food. Dozens of regional and national artists set up tents at Drake Field on Lake Peachtree to sell their creations. Local bands perform from the gazebo, while shuffleboard, ping pong, and corn hole stations are scattered around the park. You will find food trucks and vendors with craft beer, mixed drinks and wine. The market is held the second Saturday of the month from March through November. Continued on page 22

KELLY O'HARA
A hometown girl who made it big in the soccer world.
K
elley O’Hara is a Peachtree City hometown girl—a girl who has made it big in the soccer world. “She’s what every soccer parent and soccer playing child dreams of,” says one admirer. “She did it!” At 30 years old, Kelley is a professional footballer who currently plays for the United States Women's Soccer Team and Utah Royals FC of the NWSL. She is a world champion, having played on two World Cup championship teams. In July 2019, the US Women’s National Soccer Team nabbed their second consecutive World Cup—their fourth overall—making them the team with the most FIFA Women’s World Cup wins in history. The team beat Thailand, Sweden, Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands (2-0) in the final. Kelley was a big part of their win. Kelley’s success took a lot of hard work. As a young girl growing up in Peachtree City, Kelley played for club teams— the Peachtree City Lazers, the Concord Fire, and the AFC Lightning. A 2006 graduate of Starr’s Mill High School, she played four years on the varsity soccer team and captained the team during her junior and senior years. Kelley helped lead the Panthers to the 5A state title in 2006 with 20 goals and 16 assists. Kelley was named Parade All-American as a junior and a senior and All-League, All-County, and All-State all four years. In 2006, she was named the Atlanta Journal Constitution
(AJC) Player of the Year and Gatorade Georgia State Player of the Year. She was also named NSCAA All-American. After graduation, Kelley moved across the country to play soccer for Stanford University, where she majored in science, technology, and society with a focus in environmental engineering. She finished her college career at Stanford, where she played forward, with 57 goals and 32 assists, both school records at the time. She was awarded the 2009 Hermann Trophy as the top player in women’s college soccer. Along with her Club career after graduation, Kelley played in the 2011 Women's World Cup, where the team finished with a silver medal. The following summer, she won a Gold Medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics, playing every minute of every game. In 2015, the U.S. Women’s Team won the Women's World Cup and Kelley scored her first international goal, clinching the semi-final win against Germany. 2019 was her second World Cup Championship. Kelley’s soccer training was before the time of MOBA Soccer Academy in Peachtree City, but she came to town last year and did a training program for MOBA’s youth program. “She was awesome,” says Kathy Phalen, MOBA’s Event and Community Outreach Director. “The kids were thrilled, and she was truly an inspiration to them.” d

hen it comes to shopping, you can find just about anything you want in Peachtree City—national chains, locally owned boutiques, big boxes, and more. But increasingly, shopping areas also are becoming sources of entertainment—community gathering places where you can shop, eat, and spend a day or evening enjoying a special event. Braelinn Village and The Avenue are two shopping areas in Peachtree City that plan events and celebrations that bring the entire community together.
Braelinn Village
One of Peachtree City’s original five village shopping areas, Braelinn Village not only offers shopping and dining but provides a stage for four community holiday celebrations. An Easter Egg Hunt brings the Easter bunny and 9,000 stuffed eggs. July 4th—after the Peachtree City parade— offers face painting, kid’s crafts, games and prizes, and a chance to register to win a brand new golf cart. This year’s Halloween Trick-or-Treat event at Braelinn is October 26. There will be Best Halloween Costume Contests, a special prize for the Best Decorated Golf Cart, a DJ, and lots of games and prizes. Santa arrives at Braelinn in his horse drawn carriage on November 30 at Braelinn’s Christmas Tree Lighting. There are complementary photos Continued on page 38

>> dining AROUND TOWN Curious to try –
The Curious Pig? So, what’s The Curious Pig? More and more folks are realizing that it is a new restaurant that opened last November in Peachtree City. Curious people should try it because it is getting rave reviews—pork chops to die for, delicious rotating weekly specials, about 100 wine labels, a top-notch bartender, and it’s a gastro pub! Family and friend owned and operated, The Curious Pig is the culinary vision of Chef Scott Smith, a 1999 graduate of McIntosh High School and a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta. After working for several successful Atlanta restaurants, Scott decided to work for himself. He wanted creative freedom for himself and his staff, and he wanted to work in a non-stressful environment where everyone could shine and be encouraged to do what they do well. The Curious Pig was born. The Curious Pig specializes in fresh, locally sourced foods. About 80% of its lettuces come from Alo Farms in Peachtree City. Meats and seafood come mostly from nearby Revere Meat Co., while Peachtree City’s Line Creek Brewing
Company provides locally crafted beers. The Curious Pig building on Huddleston Road will be familiar to many long-time residents as it has housed several restaurants and a consignment shop over the years. Updated with a “farmhouse industrial” look, the 125-seat restaurant has patio seating for about 20 with plenty of room outside for kids to run around. “We have been truly fortunate with the support we’ve received from the community,” says Chef Scott. “We already have regular customers, and most new people who come in say they are upset that it’s taken them eight months to realize we are here!” The Curious Pig caters, hosts monthly wine dinners, has a “Happy Hour” from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and has participated in numerous community events like Night Market and the recent Wing King Cook Off. The restaurant also can be rented for parties. “We’re just trying to have fun,” says Chef Scott. There’s nothing curious about that! d

>> fitness & HEALTH WINTER WEATHER AND YOUR SKIN • Switch out cleansers containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for gentler cleansers over the winter. • Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep your skin moist and your pores clear. • Discuss scaling back on topical acne medications during the winter with our dermatologists if your skin is becoming dry and irritated. There are some topical medications that are less prone to causing dryness, and in some cases, adding or changing oral medications may reduce the need to use harsh topical medications.
The combinations of cold, dry air outside and warm, dry air inside during winter is tough on skin. Everyone needs to adapt their skincare regimen for the season, particularly those with certain skin conditions. Winter Skin Care for Everyone The most prevalent dermatological problem for most during the winter season is dry, itchy skin. Those suffering from these general cold-weather issues should keep the following tips in mind: • Use warm water for bathing and washing; hot water depletes your skin’s natural protective oils. • Wash with a gentle, moisturizing cleanser — preferably one without fragrances, deodorants, or antibacterial agents. • Limit your bath or shower to 5 to 10 minutes. Any longer can strip the oils from your skin. • Apply moisturizer directly after you bathe. There is a brief window, roughly three minutes, after you towel off, during which the skin is extra-hydrated from soaking in warm water. If you can immediately apply a moisturizer, it will “trap” the moisture in the skin, greatly enhancing the effectiveness of the moisturizer. Wait too long, and the extra moisture in the skin
evaporates and “chaps” the skin, leaving it even drier than before bathing. So don’t waste time! • With moisturizers, heavier is better for severely dry skin. Lotions in a bottle are mostly just water. A cream in a tube, or a heavy ointment in a jar, may be a bit less pleasant to use, but will be much more effective when your skin is very dry and irritated. • Hands are particularly prone to dryness, due to frequent hand washing and use of alcohol-based sanitizers during the cold and flu season. Apply a heavy, protective hand cream frequently, and after every hand washing. • Use a humidifier. • Wear gloves, scarves, and lip balm to cover exposed skin when outdoors. • Wash your face once a day. • Drink plenty of water; your skin will benefit from internal hydration too! Winter Skin Care for Acne Winter can present special challenges to acne patients. Many acne treatments, ranging from over the counter products, all the way up to potent oral medications like Accutane, can cause severe dryness, making it difficult to keep going. Here are some strategies:
46 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 |
Winter Skin Care for Eczema Eczema sufferers must actively continue with their skin protection regimen in winter because dry air and allergens from indoor heating can exacerbate dry, itchy, rashy episodes. Consider: • Following the instructions above for aggressive moisturizing in the critical three minute window after getting out of the tub or shower. • Extra attention to using heavy, highly protective moisturizers to all eczema-prone areas.. • Avoiding fragrances and other potential allergens or chemicals in any skin care products. • Getting dermatology evaluation. If your eczema is to the point of causing significant itching, then often prescription medications are needed to get eczema back in control. Winter Skin Care for Psoriasis In addition to the advice above: • Talk with our dermatologists about various treatment options, including both topical and injected medications. • Wear layers of soft clothing you can add or remove so that you never get too cold outdoors or too sweaty indoors — and choose soft cotton over denim or wool. • Keep stress levels low; stress can make psoriasis flare-ups worse. • And, just as with eczema, if your skin is flaring up badly due to cold weather, see a dermatologist to find treatments that will help get your skin back under control. If you experience winter skin problems, call Avail Dermatology at 770-251-5111 to schedule an appointment and start feeling better!

Piedmont Fayette’s Focuses on Wellness with New Facility
T
his fall, the doors will open on the Piedmont Wellness Center at Pinewood Forest, a medically-integrated wellness center in the heart of the planned community across from Pinewood Atlanta Studios. The facility is the first of its kind within the Piedmont system and will be one of the first facilities in the Southeast to feature programming such as Les Mills’ The Trip, a 40-minute multi-peak cycling workout with a cinema style screen and sound system. The facility will create a culture of health and wellness, supporting the healthy lifestyle goals of the community and acting as a bridge between medical care and wellness. Piedmont Fayette understands that “mobility is medicine” and
people who are active and healthy tend not to have the chronic health conditions that can bring about even more serious medical issues. A wellness center is a facility focused on providing preventive medicine solutions. “We believe this innovative facility will be a gold standard fitness facility for people of all ages and abilities, and is the best way to deliver preventive medicine and healthcare solutions for a community focused on wellness and living better,” said Stephen Porter, Piedmont Fayette’s Chief Executive Officer. “The Piedmont Wellness Center at Pinewood Forest offers clinical integration so that physical therapists and exercise physiologists share common space. Another pinnacle feature is the Human Performance program, which will provide athletic style training for both youth and adults with dedicated space for indoor and outdoor fitness training. The Wellness Center will engage with the outdoors outside a wall of glass, connecting with a central park, open air elevated exercise platform, activity lawns, and over 15 miles of integrated trail and path systems that meander throughout the community and nature preserve areas. “Piedmont’s purpose is to make a positive difference in every life we touch,” said Porter. “We are thrilled to be able to provide a facility like this that has the potential to positively change lives each and every day.” Memberships to The Piedmont Fayette Wellness Center at Pinewood Forest are open to the public with access to the outpatient rehab/healthcare services by appointment.

Get Moving at Grand Prix Family Races
R
eady. Set. Go! Now in its 16th year, the 2019 - 2020 Grand Prix series of running events is underway in 18 Fayette County elementary schools. These 5K races and 1-mile runs/walks are designed as a fun way to get youngsters and their families moving, as well as raise money for their schools. Sponsored by the Peachtree City Rotary Club and the Peachtree City Running Club, the series collectively raises about $100,000 annually for elementary schools and has raised about $1.5 million for the schools in Fayette County since it started in 2005. Every dime that is raised goes to the schools, while the Rotary purchases the trophies and age-group awards. The Rotary also maintains the database for the points earned by each runner. Runners and walkers earn points at each race based on their finish in their individual age group. The more races run or walked, the more points earned, so often it is not the fastest participant in an age group that finishes on top. In fact, often even walkers end up winning the year-end awards if they show up at enough races. The Rotary hosts an awards luncheon at the end of each school year, and all participants who come in within the top three places in their age groups are treated to lunch and honored with an award. “The idea is to provide kids and parents a healthy alternative to electronic games and sedentary habits and also an opportunity to participate in a sport together,” says George Martin, Grand Prix Series Coordinator. “Many families run together and often end up as year end winners in the youth and adult age divisions. Normally a fund raising race would draw mostly kids and parents from within a school, but through the Grand Prix points system, ‘the rising tide raises all boats.’” ptcrc.com/rotary-grand-prix/

Get Ready to Turn On The Heat!
C
ooler weather is approaching, and before you know it, it will be time to turn on the heat. Before you do, though, it is always best to make sure your HVAC system is in tip top shape. Unlike other appliances that need maintenance once a year, heating and cooling systems need attention more often. There are a handful of simple HVAC maintenance tasks that you can perform on your own to keep the system efficient and at peak performance. Others require an HVAC specialist. By knowing what tasks to do and when, you’ll prolong the system’s life, save energy, and catch minor problems before they become expensive headaches. One simple DIY maintenance task is to keep the area around the outside units clean and free of debris and tall grass. Trim back plants, trees and shrubs so they are about three feet away from the equipment. When leaves and pine needles fall, or pollen coats the equipment, gently brush 50 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2019 – WINTER 2020 |
them away. Although not as prevalent in our area, dust off snow that accumulates on your outdoor HVAC equipment. If you see a bit of ice forming on the units, this is usually OK. If sheets or blocks of ice form on them, immediately call an expert. Do not try to melt the ice. Another thing to do is regularly inspect your HVAC system for issues that require a professional’s attention, such as dirty evaporator or condenser coils, damaged fins, water leaks or frozen coils. In addition, pay attention to how the system sounds. Call an expert if you notice new or strange sounds or vibrations. The best scenario is to have the heating system checked in the Fall and the air conditioning checked in the Spring. In fall, hire an HVAC expert for the heating system’s annual maintenance and inspection. During the inspection, the professional will check the electrical connections and voltage, condensate drain, exhaust outlets, fuel lines, burners, heat exchangers,

and other components as well as lubricate moving parts and address areas of concern. In spring, hire an HVAC expert to inspect the A/C. The professional will inspect the connections, voltage, lines, fins, pans, coils, refrigerant levels, blower system components, and more and will also lubricate moving parts, clean dirty components, and calibrate the blower. HVAC problems never happen at convenient times. Regular maintenance helps you avoid them while prolonging the system’s life. Always hire a licensed HVAC
contractor to perform annual maintenance and repairs on your HVAC system to prevent accidentally voiding active warranties. Many HVAC companies will set up annual maintenance programs for customers. These programs many even offer a discount on repairs and parts when needed. Delta Air Lines Employee Volunteers Renovate Christian City Cottage
undreds of Delta Air Lines employees volunteered over a two-month period to help renovate and repurpose a Christian City cottage originally funded by Delta Air Lines employees in 1972. The Delta-Jim Turner Memorial Cottage that served as a home for children for more than four decades now has a new life as a duplex guest home serving the children and senior adults living at Christian City. One of the 2-bedroom apartments in the duplex will be used to help facilitate family reunifications for children who live in the homes at Christian City Children’s Village. The second 2-bedroom apartment will be available for senior residents’ families and friends to lease while they are visiting. Jim Turner, Vice President of Tech Ops and long-time Delta Air Lines employee, was also a trustee of Christian City. He was 56 when he passed away in 1971. At the renovation project kick-off event in April 2019, Jane Turner Hannon, daughter of Jim Turner, expressed her family’s appreciation for the honor bestowed on Turner when the cottage was named in his memory. “My father truly believed that relationships built strength, whether in family, church, community or work. That is what we see at the heart of the Delta ‘personality’ and ‘spirit.’ Dad believed that we all have a responsibility to other people, and he lived out that belief through all aspects of his life, at Delta, and in his church,” Hannon said.
Kim Mills-Smith, a 30-year veteran flight attendant with Delta Air Lines, worked with Michel Aletraris of Delta Tech Ops to organize volunteer effort and secure funding to complete the renovation. Mills-Smith designed the floor plan and handled the interior design for the renovated duplex. She and Aletraris worked alongside Christian City volunteer project manager, Terry Chapman. “This renovation project created a vision of hope for the next 47 years,” said Mills-Smith at the re-dedication event. LaVann Landrum, Chief Development Officer, commented that successful projects like this one are the result of the combined efforts of many. “Delta Air Lines has been a faithful friend of Christian City for more than 50 years, and we are grateful for this continued show of support. We also appreciate contributions to this renovation project from Lowe’s of Newnan, Mega Granite and Marble, Owens Corning, Atlanta Community Tool Bank, Legacy Christian Church, Aaron’s, 44 Appliance & Supply, M-Con Construction, the Grey Ghosts from Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity, Sherwin Williams/Fairburn, Cheryl and Mike Cater, and the many others who stepped up to make sure all necessary building supplies and meals for volunteers were provided. Because of this dedicated group of people and companies, Christian City has been strengthened for future service to the children, families and seniors who need us,” Landrum said.

All About Manny!
S
everal months ago, “Peachtree City Magazine” asked their Facebook followers to ask their favorite questions about Manny the Manatee, the popular Peachtree City landmark that stands silently watching passersby at the corner of North Peachtree Parkway and Walt Banks Road. We had 175 Likes and 95 Comments. Recently, Manny took the time to thoughtfully answer some of our most requested questions. Who makes your outfits? My mom. I like most of the outfits she makes. She is really good at showing both my masculine and feminine sides. I don’t like to look fat. At times, she forgets my sensitive side.
A Reason To Smile By Richard Bearden
We are often asked: Why a manatee mailbox, and the simple answer is—to make you smile. There is a backstory to the placing of Manny the Manatee on the corner of North Peachtree Parkway and Walt Banks Road. In 2014, I met my wife Sheila. Our lives became so much brighter as we got to know each other. Happiness was obvious to everyone who knew us. People knew the tragic loss we shared, the death of a spouse. Mine was “the long goodby” as my wife lost a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s. Sheila’s loss was in the blink of an eye from a heart attack. Our relationship has given us a reason to smile again. In 2015, I needed to replace my mailbox. For years, while visiting my business partner’s vacation home in the Florida Keys, I would see manatee mailboxes. The things cracked me up. I was in a very happy place and wanted to do something fun. Manny arrived in May 2015. I placed him at his present location on the weekend; and on Monday morning, the Peachtree City Police and Code Enforcement were at my door. I knew I had not violated any subdivision or city ordinances, but you never know. Thankfully, they were only interested in Manny’s story. I told them Manny is on this corner to bring smiles. They took their picture with arms around Manny. With the blessing of the Code Enforcement and protection of the Peachtree City Police and Fire Department, Manny has a home in The Bubble!
How many outfits do you have? I’ve lost count. I have outfits for all seasons, occasions, holidays, and special events. I’m a “CLOTHES MANATEE!” Where do you keep all your clothes? Mom and Dad keep my outfits in their garage apartment. Dad says it’s getting too full. Thankfully, Mom ignores him. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas! I like being Santa’s helper coming out of the chimney. Also, I think I look good in red! How did you get to Peachtree City? I arrived in Peachtree City in May 2015 in a most undignified way—in a crate on a truck. Never again!! I’ve been “Manning” this corner for nearly 5 years! What words of wisdom do you have for us as we pass by? I love what I do! If I see you laugh or even see a small smile, I have served my purpose. It is only a brief moment, but I hope it helps. They say that laughter is the best medicine that started with a smile. May your smiles turn to laughter, and you share the feeling with everyone you meet!

PEACHTREE CITY'S WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S
T
he 2019 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® in Peachtree City will take place on Saturday, October 5, at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Nearly 1,200 people from Peachtree City and surrounding areas are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. On Walk day, participants will honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease with Promise Flowers during the Promise Garden Ceremony – a moving display of hope to represent the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Georgia alone, there are more than 150,000 people living with the disease and 533,000 caregivers. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association® mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Participants can join a team or register to walk as an individual at alz.org/walk. The Alzheimer's Association® is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s research, care and support. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. PRESERVING NATURE BRINGS JOY
Whitetail twins photo by Dan Nelson
T
he Southern Conservation Trust says they don’t just believe in protecting land, they believe people should have access to enjoy it. The organization, which is based in Peachtree City, develops public nature areas, provides environmental education, and conserves tens of thousands of acres of land, waterways, and valuable habitat each year. The Southern Conservation Trust (SCT) conserves land through conservation easements, a legal agreement between the landowner and the land trust that permanently limits the uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. The landowner continues to own the land and can live on it, sell it, or pass it on to heirs with the agreement remaining in place. Conservation easements can be placed on various types and sizes of both private and public land. SCT currently conserves land in five states across the Southeast and has eight public nature areas located in Fayette County. These public nature areas, totaling
over 1,100 acres, allow the community to experience greenspace and learn about the environment. Fayette County’s community preserves include The Ridge Nature Area, Line Creek Nature Area, Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary, Flat Creek Nature Area, Morgan Grove Nature Area, and Nesmith Preserve. Wildcat Woods, a 23-acre tract behind Whitewater High School complex, and Somerby Woods, a 40-acre tract next to Somerby Senior Living in Peachtree City, are both under construction and not currently open to the public. SCT offers a variety of interactive environmental educational programs for classes and groups. SCT staff and volunteers conduct programs in area classrooms as well as its public nature areas in Fayette County. Programs can be tailored to curriculum and group objectives. Past programs topics include Animal Friends, What’s in That Log, Skulls & Furs, Habitats & Georgia Ecoregions, What About Our Water, Terrific Plants & Trees, Rocks of Georgia, Awesome Outdoor Adventures,
Animal Tracks, and Georgia Soils. Ways to support the efforts and programs of the SCT include volunteering, donating, or attending its many public events. SCT held its first annual Conserving Georgia Benefit & Auction this past August at Zac Brown’s Camp Southern Ground. The event featured an auction with a focus on wildlife, a live bluegrass band, a chef-prepared field-to-table wild game dinner, as well as the launch of a new beer from Line Creek Brewing. All proceeds went towards expanding SCT’s environmental education programming and providing access to nature. Upcoming events this fall and winter include Brew for Bees at Morgan Grove Nature Area, September 13; Haunted Woods at The Ridge Nature Area, October 26; Ghost Stories at Morgan Grove Nature Area with storytellers Anthony Vinson and Tracy Sue Walker, November 1; and Santa at Sams Sanctuary, December 7. 770-486-7774. sctlandtrust.org.
