SESSION DESCRIPTIONS AND SPEAKER BIOS Financial Prescription for Medical Writers:
You don’t need to be a financial guru to have good financial records for your writing business, tax on taxes, and put away your writing earnings for the future. This session will give specific tips on an easy record keeping system for your income and expenses, provide tips on some tax deductions, and give ideas on saving money from your writing for retirement. Linda Y. Leitz, co-owner of It’s Not Just Money, Inc., is a Certified Financial Planner and has been in the financial industry since 1979. She is also enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. Before becoming a financial planning professional, Linda held several executive positions in the banking industry. She began her career as a bank examiner. Predatory Journals: How They Threaten Science, Communication of Science, and Scientists Themselves:
Provides essential information about predatory publishers and journals and how they threaten science, the communication of science, and scientists themselves. Medical research is particularly affected by the appearance of low-quality, pay-to-publish journals, as much junk and borderline science — such as CAM — is being published bearing the window-dressing of vetted, authentic research. The talk will also describe related scams threatening scholarly authors.
Jeffrey Beall is an associate professor at the University of Colorado Denver. He works in the university's Auraria Library, which serves students from all three schools on the Auraria Campus. Beall has worked as an academic librarian for over twenty-six years and has published widely in the areas of library information retrieval and scholarly publishing. From January 2012 to January 2017, he authored and published the blog Scholarly Open Access, which identified predatory publishers and journals and critically analyzed the sorry state of scholarly publishing. Under pressure, he unpublished his blog in mid-January 2017.
This Drug’s for You: How Your Genes Affect Response to Medications:
Dr. Christina Aquilante will discuss how a person’s genetic make-up (DNA) affects response to medications (also known as pharmacogenomics). She will discuss this topic in the context of medications used to treat conditions such as pain, cardiovascular disease, depression, and cancer. Dr. Aquilante received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a pharmacy practice residency at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Following residency, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacogenomics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Dr. Aquilante's clinical research program is focused on identifying genetic factors that influence medication response in patients with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Dr. Aquilante is the chair-elect of the Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and a member of the National Institutes of Health Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genetics and Genomics. She is also the co-chair of the Pharmacogenomics Implementation Committee Colorado (PICColo), a system-wide clinical pharmacogenomics implementation initiative at UCHealth.
