ALL ABOUT

BACK PAIN Back pain is one of the most common types of pain – in fact, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons,

it is estimated that 75-85% of all Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

Even as common as back pain is, there are still many questions – what causes it? How can I prevent back pain? How can I relieve my back pain?

Causes Back pain is caused by a wide variety of factors. Some will experience back pain due to mechanical issues with the spine or muscles of the back, including disc issues, trigger points, and muscle spasms. There are several conditions that may cause back pain, including arthritis, spinal stenosis, and fibromyalgia. While these are factors that may not be preventable, there are several risk factors that are preventable. Being overweight can put stress on the spine and back muscles. Smokers also are more at risk for developing back pain, as the body heals more slowly in smokers. Poor physical fitness is also a risk for developing back pain, as the muscles and skeletal structures of the back are not as strong and you may be more prone to injury and weakness. Injuries can also cause back pain. Improperly lifting heavy objects, reaching too far, or sports injuries can all cause chronic back pain. How Can I Prevent Back Pain? If you have a condition or mechanical issue that causes your back pain, it may be difficult to prevent it completely, but there are certainly measures that can be taken to reduce pain. Frequent exercise and keeping back muscles strong is important to prevent and reduce back pain, and staying a healthy weight will also help. Watching your posture and making sure that you are sitting comfortably and correctly at your desk can also help with persistent back pain. How Can I Relieve My Back Pain? At OSR Physical Therapy, our team of therapists frequently works with back pain sufferers and can help with both pain relief and conditioning to improve symptoms and prevent future pain. Depending on if your pain is acute (came on suddenly and was caused by something like a fall or lifting a heavy object) or chronic (due to a condition or mechanical issue in the back, lasts over three months), your OSR Physical Therapist will develop a personalized plan, specific to your individual condition. This plan is designed to provide you with specialized treatment to alleviate pain and provide healing over the course of your time in the clinic.
