APPLIED DEGREE PROGRAMS
MATURE STUDENT ADMISSION
Applied degrees allow students the ability to combine their academic education with practical, on-the-job training. These programs are typically four years in length, like a bachelor’s degree, but include a work term.
If you have been out of high school for a few years, or are over 21 and never completed your high school diploma, the admission requirements may differ from a high school route. Consult the MHC Calendar for mature student admission requirements.
DEGREE PARTNERSHIPS
UNIVERSITY TRANSFER
MHC offers several degree programs on campus in partnership with other Alberta universities, allowing you to complete a full, four-year bachelor’s degree in Medicine Hat.
Navigating post-secondary can be difficult, but starting at MHC will ensure access to personalized program and transfer support. We have transfer agreements with institutions across Alberta, Canada, and even around the world. Starting your university education here can provide significant advantages over a large university, such as cost savings on tuition and accommodations, smaller class sizes with teaching-focused instruction, and personalized advising and support. You can even access transfer support with us long after you have left MHC, including advocacy and support on your behalf should you require it.
CERTIFICATE & DIPLOMA PROGRAMS Certificate programs are typically one year in length, allowing you to train for a specific career in a very short period of time and then enter the workforce. Diploma programs also provide training for a specific career or field, but are typically two years in length.

Depending on the program you choose, you may be able to take up to two years on our campus and then transfer on to a university degree program. Professional university programs [such as Law, Medicine, or Chiropractics] may require a full degree prior to admission, but starting with MHC will allow you to get the most out of your learning through teaching-focused classrooms that centre on you. Our program list [see next page] includes several degrees that can be completed at our campus and outlines other degrees that you can start here and transfer to another institution to complete. If you have questions about starting your university degree at MHC or would like to book an appointment, call 403.529.3819. 2

CAREER ADVISING & DEVELOPMENT Our staff can provide you with up to date information on careers, employment trends, average salaries, and more. MHC staff have access to three different assessment / inventory tools to help you choose a course of study. You can take one or more of them free of charge! The Career Cruising tool provides you a chance to think about your likes and dislikes and assesses your skills and abilities. It can then help you evaluate how your preferences align with specific career choices. The Strong Interest Inventory® is a reputable assessment tool that evaluates your interests, identifies which areas of study would match your personality, and compares your assessment to those who have worked in the field. Meyers Briggs is a personality assessment that helps you understand yourself, your cognitive style and your behaviour.
CHOOSE A PROGRAM THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU Let us help you find your fit.
Our career counsellors can help you interpret the results from these assessments, making you feel more comfortable selecting a program and a career path.

ADAM HAGEMANN ELECTRICIAN
What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and technical training that leads to certification as a journeyperson. The program is administered by Alberta Learning. Apprenticeship involves learning a trade through observing, practicing, studying, and attending technical courses. These courses run from six to 12 weeks in length during each period of your apprenticeship. In the field, you will work under a qualified tradesperson and learn the principles, skills, tools, and materials of the trade. The term of apprenticeship varies in length depending on the trade. It can be anywhere from two to four training periods [two to four years]. During this time, you are indentured to an employer who has agreed to provide an opportunity for you to gain work experience in the trade. You are obligated to perform the job to the best of your ability and usually supply your own tools. As an apprentice, you are an employee and are usually paid an hourly wage. Wages increase according to experience. Depending on the trade, wages range from 50% to 90% of a journeyperson’s wages. 9
