Evolving with Tech for the Best Outcomes

Dear colleagues,

A Message from the Executive Office

Since Medline’s early days, we’ve been sharing updates like these to give you better insight into happenings across the company. Through the years, the format has changed with the times. And certainly the articles and focus inside each edition are different, reflecting current initiatives and successes. But one thing always remains true—this magazine sheds light on the excellent work you and your teams are doing across Medline.

Similarly, though on a much different scale, Medline continues to evolve with the times and invest in the right technology and tools to support our growth. That change is crucial to our continued success. As is having the right people in place to work with and manage the technology, as well as nurture relationships and ensure a seamless operation. Both allow us to remain invaluable partners to our customers—another important constant through the years.

In this issue, you’ll learn more about our technology evolution, and the ways Medline’s ongoing investments are helping ensure that the right products are available at the right time to meet the demands of our customers and the patients in their care.

I hope you enjoy reading our 2024 Summer issue, and that it has you feeling as excited about Medline’s future as I am.

Thanks again for all you do,

“...sheds light on the excellent work you and your teams are doing...”

Jim Mills Excellence Winners Meet Our 2023

In March of this year, Medline National Sales Meetings were held in Denver, Colorado.

On the nights of the Acute and Non-Acute Awards Banquets, CEO, Jim Boyle presented the 2023 Jim Mills Excellence Awards.

This Award has held various names through the years, being renamed in 2019 in honor of one of our co-founders, Jim Mills. Jim was our chairman and CEO for 30 years and had a massive influence on Medline’s culture that was—and remains—

fundamental to our growth and success. Not only did he have very high expectations for himself and those around him, but he led the company by example with his dedication, innovation, and customer service ethos.

Scott Smith, Director Sales

This year’s winners of the Jim Mills Award have all demonstrated that same commitment and willingness to go above and beyond. They have made a difference on their teams and Medline as a whole. Congratulations to the winners below!

Scott has been with Medline for 15 years, holding roles across Product Management, Marketing and Divisional Sales within the US and Europe.

In the last two years, he created a divisional sales team to support our Surgical Adhesive business, which led to a 27% increase in annualized Foam Dressings wins in 2023. That growth increased to 58% in Q4 and is expected to continue at those levels into 2024.

He continues to show amazing results, achieving 40+ wins with Integrated Delivery Networks for major Advanced Wound Care categories. He leads by example, is a great partner to the sales team, and is always willing to do what it takes to win.

Kristen Shiley, Sr Director HR

Kristen has worked to create an environment where our sales force can thrive and achieve their full potential. She is an ally to our reps, focusing on their training and development while facilitating opportunities for career growth and mentorship. It is clear from her work that she prioritizes the well-being and engagement of our sales force, proactively addressing issues such as work-life balance, stress management, and burnout prevention.

She has done a great job fostering a positive work environment where reps feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. She understands the unique needs of the sales function and has effectively implemented HR initiatives that play a vital role in driving sales performance and organizational success.

Austeja Stanislaus, Sr Dir Sales Administration

Austeja has taken Sales Operations for Non-Acute Care to new heights, leading a growing team of analysts. Austeja and her team led the implementation of the Write System, which has improved sales efficiencies, visibility for workflow, bandwidth and output. As a result, we have already seen process improvement initiatives and increased customer satisfaction.

Austeja is a critical thinker, customer oriented and very collaborative. She drives these qualities across her many teams, who are often put in challenging situations. Her new standardized and scalable processes have allowed reps to work more efficiently and reduce non-selling activities.

Danielle Calverley, Dir Product Management

Danielle started her career with Medline 12 years ago. Her sense of urgency and customerfocused approach has guided her through the ranks, and today she represents what Product Manager excellence looks like at Medline.

She has a great mix of strategic leadership and operational excellence that has been very effective to drive growth for the Personal Care Division in Post-Acute Care. Her efforts helped grow the Medline Stretch Brief line by more than 70% and helped grow AGM by more than 30% through cost savings, SKU consolidation and pricing.

She has a track record of delivering results with a strong customer focus, is always willing to be a great partner, and is a best-in-class People Manager for her team of 14 Product Managers.

Jeff Fair, VP National Accounts

Jeff started with Medline while attending UIC on the GI Bill, working as a nighttime security guard in Mundelein. When he graduated in 1986, he joined our Accounting Department, working for Frank Resnick, Medline’s first CFO, where he met his future wife, Sue.

He then transferred to the CPT Division, holding roles in buying, inventory control and eventually as a Product Manager. In 1995, he moved to Nashville to support sales contracting with Medline’s newest and largest customer, Columbia Healthcare, which eventually became HPG. For the last 28 years, Jeff has grown our relationship and contract footprint by a considerable degree. Today HPG is an integral part of our business, and Medline has been the largest medical/surgical partner of theirs for many years.

This award is bittersweet, as Jeff will be retiring after 40 years with Medline. Congratulations Jeff on an amazing career and this year’s Jim Mills Excellence Award!

Kristin Kinnaman, Sr Product Manager

Kristin worked with the Physician Office sales team to take a perceived weakness in our pharmaceutical portfolio, and created a selling opportunity that has driven sales and led to conversions in other Division 17 and Medline-brand sales.

Pharmaceutical sales have grown significantly in the past year, and under Kristin’s leadership her team created a dynamic directional tool for sales reps to navigate pharma situations and new industry challenges. They have also led the launch of a competitor alternative product to great success and are currently launching a generic Rhogam program.

Kristin led her team on an effective path, creating smart solutions that have empowered our reps to make impressive pharma wins in 2023.

How Impacts Brand Awareness Social Media

By now, everyone is familiar with social media. But did you know just how much a simple post can impact how people feel about a company or brand?

Did You Know?

Brand awareness is how much people know about a certain brand. It's about how familiar people are with Medline’s name, logo, or products. If a lot of people know about Medline, that means we have a high brand awareness. When people know and recognize the Medline brand, they are more likely to trust it and want to buy our products.

Why is Brand Awareness Important?

1. Trustworthy

People tend to trust brands they know well. If a lot of people are aware of Medline, then they are more likely to trust us.

2. Selling in New Places

When our brand is familiar to people, it's easier for us to sell our products in new places because people already know and trust our brand.

3. Valuable and Reliable

When people know Medline, they think it's valuable and reliable. This makes them more likely to buy from us.

4. Word of Mouth

People talk about brands they know. If a brand is familiar to them, they'll tell their friends about it, bringing that brand more customers.

5. Advertising Works Better

When people already know a brand, the brand doesn’t have to spend as much money on advertising because people are already interested.

Social Media’s Role in Enhancing Brand Awareness

Social media platforms are super helpful for boosting brand awareness in a bunch of cool ways.

1. Reach

Social media sites have billions of users from all over the world. This means we can reach a huge audience. By creating interesting content and targeting specific groups, Medline can connect with the right people.

2. You Can Chat with Your Audience

Social media lets you have conversations with your followers. This helps build a stronger connection with them and makes them feel like they're part of our Medline community.

3. Things Can Go Viral

If something interesting gets shared a lot, it can spread like wildfire on social media. When this happens, it can help get Medline noticed by tons of new people.

“Brand messages shared by employees on social media earn 561 percent more reach than the same messages shared by the brand’s social media channels—and eight times more engagement.”

Top Posts for the Year

In the last year, Medline has seen growing success when it comes to users engaging with our content. In partnership with our employees, we’re leveraging technology to meet the evolving needs of our customers and their patients across divisions, departments and locations

MedlineUsesTechtoFosterSuccess

This spring, more than 100 Dallas-area community leaders and healthcare partners joined Medline in celebrating the company’s 20th AutoStore installation at the B06 distribution center in Wilmer, Texas.

The state-of-the-art, softwareenabled system utilizes robots operating atop a grid structure to deliver bins to team members to pick orders and manage product storage. The latest installations are part of Medline’s Healthcare Resilience Initiative, a more than $2 billion, multi-year investment in construction, operations, technology and systems, that is helping to create jobs, improve efficiencies and support ongoing healthcare supply chain resiliency.

“Our strategy has always been designed with one goal in mind: ensure that the right products are available at the right time to meet the demands of our customers and the patients in their care,” said Steve Miller, executive vice president, supply chain. “A continued investment in technology helps us do just that.”

It’s a commitment that extends across all Medline divisions and

“Leveraging technology and automation is core to our operations strategy at Medline.”

locations, including employee systems and resources, as well as to our customers. For staff, ongoing system upgrades help simplify and standardize processes, improve access to resources, free up time for more high-value tasks, decrease physical demands and improve safety.

“We’re a customer-first organization, and that means you take care of the people who take care of the customer,” said Marshall Lancaster, Medline chief information officer.

Boosting Efficiencies in Operations

To date, AutoStore is the largest and most impactful technology investment in Medline operations, with more than 1,700 robots helping to optimize storage space, improve efficiencies and

empower our distribution network to service our customers.

“Today, Medline is the largest operator of AutoStore technology in the world, which enables us to more accurately and productively fulfill customer orders,” said Miller. “It also allows us to store more products more densely in our distribution centers so customers across the entire continuum of care can benefit from a broader selection and more on-hand inventory to meet their needs.”

“With the volumes we have today, we simply could not have achieved the speed and accuracy (two to four times greater picking rates) without automation,” said Daniel Schwartz, vice president of engineering. Along with the company’s MedTrans private transportation fleet—the largest transportation fleet of any healthcare product distributor in the U.S.— AutoStore is helping Medline provide 24-hour delivery to 95% of the U.S.

In addition to ensuring the timely delivery of product orders, “automation and technology simplifies and reduces some of the very manual processes in our distribution centers, making our operations safer, more accurate and more productive for our team members,” said Miller.

The AutoStore stations are “an area where team members want to be,” said Schwartz. “Team members are standing at an interactive picking station instead of doing a lot of walking.”

AutoStore requires “less bending, and lifting and reduces mental fatigue, said Lindsey Andrews, operations manager at B06, allowing employees to “have the clarity to make the best and most accurate decisions, which improves

quality for the customer as well.”

“Leveraging technology and automation is core to our operations strategy at Medline,” Miller continued. “Beyond the AutoStore automated storage and retrieval solution, we are investing in technology to automate other parts of our operation including our order packing processes, case scanning and picking, robotic picking, and systems that allow us to track and communicate customer shipments.”

Plans are also underway to add additional technology at the company’s

50+ distribution centers across North America, encompassing more than 28 million square feet of warehouse space, said Schwartz.

“We have a whole road map in terms of future technology,” he continued.

“We’re fortunate to be able to continue to invest in our business to improve not only the resiliency of the supply chain, but the efficiencies in our warehouse.”

This includes the addition of packaging automation this summer at Medline’s CO2 distribution center in Grayslake, Illinois, “another leap is less than case

processing, which eliminates a majority of the packout time.”

Ensuring Supply Chain Resiliency

In addition to ensuring accurate, timely deliveries to customers across the continuum of care, Medline offers an array of supply chain and inventory solutions that utilize the company’s comprehensive data and reporting tools to help providers avoid product shortages and maintain supply chain resiliency.

These include customized supply chain dashboards providing transparent data on inventory and pricing performance, AI-driven demand planning and forecasting, machine learning, and proactive backorder protection.

These solutions “ultimately drive supply chain resiliency for the customer, allowing our supply chain demand planning functions to be more

proactive versus reactive, and creating a more productive partnership with the customer,” said Brian Wells, senior vice president of sales operations. One custom solution integrates inventory data and processes between Medline and customers—to provide a more holistic, near real-time view of available medical products. When inventory shortages arise, the customer has visibility to the issue, and a replacement product can be recommended. “We want to remediate the backorder before it is an issue,” said

Wells. Instead, customers can discuss or choose an alternative product— “in the moment and without delay.”

Medline is also implementing technology “that will allow customers to have real-time visibility into their order status,” said Lancaster, including when the order leaves Medline and “essentially where the truck is” throughout the delivery process. Long term, the customer will be able to see “the entire life cycle of an order” from the time of order placement until the order arrives at the facility’s loading dock.

“Automation and technology simplify and reduce some of the very manual processes in our distribution centers, making our operations safer, more accurate and more productive for our team members.”

In addition, a “complete top-to-bottom redesign of our ecommerce platform”— regularly utilized by customers to review products, costs and inventory—is underway, said Lancaster. “The new site will have features that are more consistent with what customers are seeing in the consumer market.” The project is expected to be completed in 2026; however, additional upgrades will be ongoing.

Optimizing Manufacturing Processes and Productivity

Medline sells and distributes 335,000 products, including medical supplies that the company manufactures and assembles at more than 20 facilities across North America.

In 2023, $125 million of the company’s HRI investment went toward manufacturing improvements. These included the expansion of the company’s ReNewal™ device reprocessing facility in Redmond, Oregon. Today, the facility has the technical capacity to reprocess more than 4,300 types of supplies and devices across a broad range of medical specialties. In addition, enhancements were made to 12 robotic

production lines at the Lithia Springs, Georgia facility, producing FitRight incontinence products and facemasks, improving sorting, palletizing, and distribution efficiencies.

Medline is also improving and integrating software at manufacturing locations in North America and throughout the world. A new manufacturing execution system will standardize and modernize operations by “getting all of our manufacturing facilities on the same platform,” said Lancaster. “In many cases, the facilities produce and ship to each other, and that includes cross-border transactions.”

The new integrated system will provide real-time performance information, allow manufacturing locations to share information more seamlessly, and make it easier for employees to transfer to other manufacturing locations, creating a standardized “manufacturing process and flow, and a common consensus on how we want our manufacturing process to run,” said Lancaster.

Providing Sales Reps with Mobile Resources

Ensuring reps are well-equipped to do their best work has always been a focus at Medline, and technology has become a larger part of that over time.

“Processes and technology directly impact the productivity and day-to-day lives of our sales reps, and we always

“Really good technology is a force multiplier. It’s something that allows us to take our customer and product focus—what we’re really good at— and make it even better. And that commitment and understanding come from the top.”

have an opportunity to improve,” said Wells. “As a result, our partnership with IS (Information Services) has been critical to helping us simplify the experience and leverage technology to improve in the future,” with plans “to create a more consistent process and ultimately technology experience knowing that we impact our reps in their day-to-day productivity.”

Most recently, Medline unveiled a new CRM customer relationship management system. The cloud-based platform allows sales reps to work from a mobile app instead of solely on their desktop computer. There also have been upgrades to Medline’s quoting processes, including the introduction of a SmartQuote tool that allows reps to quickly quote and pursue conversion opportunities. Ultimately, the technology will be integrated with Medline’s CRM system, said Wells, “providing a one-stop shop for everything they need.”

Looking ahead, Wells sees more “AI and machine learning to accelerate and automate the process whenever we can; to push information to the sales reps instead of them having to hunt and peck for information.” Plans are also underway to integrate a chat bot that will quickly connect reps with answers and resources.

“We’re very much in the early stages of improving this experience for the sales reps, helping them to be more productive and allowing them to talk to the customers and ultimately sell more; the things that have really differentiated Medline.”

We’re Just Getting Started

Lancaster says Medline is committed to ongoing technology, systems and automation upgrades to meet the evolving needs of Medline customers.

“We recognize that we are a product and a service company. And really good technology is a force multiplier,” said Lancaster. “It’s something that allows us to take our customer and product focus—what we’re really good at—and make it even better. And that commitment and understanding come from the top at Medline.”

Medline takes Partnership with AdventHealth to the Next Level with Grand Opening

AdventHealth is a non-profit health care system based in Altamonte Springs, Florida that operates 52 hospitals in nine states. In 2023 they were listed as the 15th largest health care provider in the US and the largest Protestant provider, serving over 6.7 million patients annually.

Like many major health systems after the pandemic, they have done their best to ensure the continuity of their supply chain to be prepared in times of shortages. Some of these measures included diversifying suppliers and increasing focus on domestic and near-shore production, but there was an opportunity for a partnership that could be an even more effective solution.

For the past few years, AdventHealth has embarked on a unique collaboration

with Medline, leveraging each organization’s strengths to bolster a healthy supply chain. The largest collaborative result of this has been the opening of a new state-of-the-art

Consolidated Service Center (CSC) earlier this year in Florida.

Recently, leaders and team members from both companies shared their excitement about the nearly 375,000-squarefoot space at the ribbon cutting and building blessing event. The two organizations will co-operate the CSC using a blended staffing model including AdventHealth and Medline team members, allowing for a streamlined inventory strategy.

The building includes a distribution center, print shop, courier and mail services, mail order pharmacy that serves more than 125,000 patients, and offices with meeting

spaces to accommodate 250 team members.

“[This CSC] will strengthen our supply chain and ensure patients and team members in Florida have what they need, when they need it. Together we are opening this site in Central Florida that will streamline how we serve our hospitals in Florida and bolster our supply chain resiliency we seek post-pandemic,” said Marisa Farabraugh, SVP Supply Chain Officer at AdventHealth. “This CSC is more than a warehouse, it is an example of a true strategic partnership and a pursuit of excellence in health care supply chain.”

The facility was built with the well-being of team members in

mind. A temperature-controlled warehouse, onsite chapel, wellness area with educational opportunities and space to relax, and a café with healthy grab-and-go meals are all meant to help team members connect, learn, and recharge during their down time.

Additional benefits to AdventHealth include the ability to purchase equipment and assets with Medline’s buying

power and access Medline’s distribution network in the event of an emergency. In turn, AdventHealth will continue to utilize Medline as its prime vendor distributor for all medical and surgical supplies throughout its network across the US.

The long-term mutual commitments and investments of both organizations will allow us to make a greater impact

through an environment of enhanced collaboration and innovation, focusing on solutions to problems beyond topics like price and volume.

“Building on our longstanding partnership with the AdventHealth team and leveraging Medline's substantial expertise in real estate, construction, distribution and transportation operations, together we crafted a cohesive

supply chain solution to best meet the future needs of their providers and patients,” said Jim Abrams, Medline board member. “I firmly believe that these steps demonstrate the value and impact of a highly integrated partnership, where we will consistently challenge the limits of supply chain operations and pioneer innovative frameworks for enhancing future supply chain resilience.”

Medline Hero Dwayne Hingos Saves a Stranger’s Life in Auburndale, Florida

We are proud to share a recent heroic story from one of our very own MedTrans dispatchers: Dwayne Hingos. His recent actions responding to a crisis at our C05 Distribution Center in Auburndale, Florida demonstrated how lucky we are to have him on our team.

Last fall around 3:00pm that day, Dwayne was taking his break in front of the C05 building. He was in an area that overlooked two retention ponds on the campus grounds known to have alligators, where many employees took their breaks. All of a sudden, a car from the road whose driver had lost consciousness veered onto Medline’s property and crashed into the pond.

Dwayne witnessed the accident, and without hesitation, sprinted across the parking lot to assist. With a level head, he directed a coworker to call 911, and with help from MedTrans driver David Jennings, propped open the locked gate that gave them access to the pond.

As he approached, it was clear the driver was not responding or able to get out of their vehicle, and with that, he plunged into the pond and swam toward the sinking car. When he arrived, Dwayne was able to pull the unconscious driver through their sunroof

before the car fully submerged beneath the water. With the driver in his arms, he made his way back to the shore. Since emergency services did not arrive until six minutes after the incident, there is no question that Dwayne saved this woman’s life.

“Some people will watch, some will call 911, but there’s that 1% of people that will act. Dwayne is in that 1%, and we’re lucky to have him,” reflected Tim Byrd, Mgr MedTrans. “He said he was just doing what anyone else would do, but that is not true; he went far above and beyond that day, and he is a hero.”

For his “exceptional bravery and composure,” the City of Auburndale honored Hingos

during a City-Commission meeting. In the commendation signed by Auburndale Mayor Dorothea Taylor Borger and other elected officials, Hingos was lauded for unselfishly swimming to the driver and pulling her to safety.

“After your heroic rescue of the driver, the vehicle did fully submerge,” the commendation

continued. “In a critical moment of distress, you demonstrated exceptional bravery and composure. Your decisive action, while putting your personal safety at risk, undoubtedly saved a precious human life. On behalf of the entire community, I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your extraordinary act of bravery and selflessness.”

Hingos receiving a commendation from the City of Auburndale.

Congratulations to our 2023 Operations Branch of the Year and S.A.F.E. Awards Recipients

Each year, Operations leadership selects the winners of the Branch of the Year, which recognizes branches that have gone above and beyond in supporting customers and team members, while also achieving exceptional performance metrics through the past 12 months. These outstanding branches have demonstrated superior dedication and commitment to delivering excellent service and meeting business objectives in 2023.

2023 Branch of the Year Winners:

• C54 Montgomery, NY

• C05 Auburndale, FL

• B28 Prattville, AL

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team also recognizes a group of DCs each year with the Safety Awareness for Everyone (S.A.F.E.) Branch of the Year award. These branches have

demonstrated an unwavering commitment to create a safe environment for everyone who steps foot in the building. These DCs set the standard for Safety Awareness at Medline in 2023 and are deserving of recognition for their exceptional performance in effectively incorporating safety into our culture and business.

2023 S.A.F.E. Branch of the Year Winners:

A few of the Branch of the Year and S.A.F.E. Award recipients being recognized.

Can you guess how many hours Medline employees volunteered this past year on DEED?

We logged 9,102 volunteer hours, with 2,552 employees donating their time, skills and resources to aid 103 not-forprofit organizations. This year, we have already had some fantastic volunteer events, such as the MLK Food Drive, Vitalant Blood Drives, Braven Mock Interviews,

and ERG Toiletry Drive, with so many exciting volunteering opportunities on the horizon.

DEED serves as our centralized volunteering platform, enabling employees to participate in and create meaningful volunteer opportunities, collaborate with

charities on causes they are passionate about, and log their volunteer hours while doing it.

Discover volunteer opportunities, sign up to volunteer, donate to a charity event, and more on DEED by scanning the QR code.
