Dear reader, I am so excited for MedSIN-KMSA’s very own magazine that I can barely type out these words! It has been a little over three months since the local team for the term 2020/21 was appointed and I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say that it has been a blast so far. The fact that we have done enough in these past few months to the point that we can write a magazine issue about it makes me realise what a blessing it is to be part of such a fantastic, dedicated and experienced team. However, the progress that we have made as an LMO did not happen overnight, as it indeed took years of hard work and perseverance, over several terms - as does any great organization. Anyway, enough with the rambling… Welcome to the first issue of MedSIN-KMSA Magazine! What is MedSIN-KMSA Magazine? According to MedSIN-KMSA’s principles: ‘MedSIN-KMSA values transparency and accountability in all of its affairs.’ We realised that the work we do in the local team is often a bit vague and ambiguous to most people in KMSA’s General Assembly. We wanted to show you the whole picture and let you in on what we have been up to and what we plan to do in the upcoming few months as well. We wanted to achieve this goal in the most creative yet inclusive way possible, hence the birth of MedSIN-KMSA Magazine - a fresh and fun space to bring you up to speed on what has been happening in our LMO recently. We hope to share this magazine with you every three months, and we hope you love it as much as we do. We also want you to know that this magazine is a platform for anyone. Over the upcoming issues, we will be including you - our amazing members of course! - by sharing your contributions, such as your articles and achievements. (Some of your articles are featured in this issue as well!) As you may be aware, the Team of Officials is currently in the process of selecting and appointing local team assistants. Therefore, we also can’t wait to introduce them to you in the next issue of the magazine once they have all been appointed, so make sure to stay tuned for that. In the meantime, here’s issue #1. I hope it will enlighten you and fulfil its purpose, and most importantly, that you will enjoy every second of reading it. If you have any feedback, we would love to hear it! You can leave it by filling out this form (here). You can also reach out to anyone who is part of the Local Team - we will welcome your point of view and will definitely take it into serious consideration. Yours sincerely, On behalf of MedSIN- KMSA’s TOs Ayah Suliman MedSIN-KMSA Secretary General 2020/21.

Ibrahim Mutasim Elzibair medsin.kmsa.president@gmail.com “The founding of our organization was more than a historical event. It was an act of faith and promise to members and to the entire association. The Declaration of development declared that people can grow themselves, that they can show out their best potential and to exceed the possible and way beyond it.”

Achievements:

Due to a late appointment in the middle of April I As KMSA President started my work later in the term. After being appointed Started my Work by getting a Quick handover from the External affairs Secretary-Acting KMSA President-. After that continued on the same road by having meetings with other MedSIN-KMSA’s EB members to know the achievements, struggles, local officer’s situation, and others Agenda. After being involved in the Local team picture of the last months, Me and other Executive Board members continue on the AWP meetings with the other local officers to discuss their plans and they forward to implement them. them In the meantime, Me and the Secretary-General started a working group to establish clear guidelines for Local projects including IOGs, Evaluation criteria, Templates..etc. The working group members are MedSIN-KMSA’s Local officers on Medical education, Public health, Sexual and reproductive health, and SecGen Monitoring Assistant. We are working day and night to have proper guidelines as soon as possible. Besides, all that has been said is Continuing on External Representation of MedSINKMSA on the National level and maintenance of MedSIN-KMSA membership.

Upcoming Plans:

• As mentioned above the main goal for the next months will be the Finalization of the Local Projects Guidelines, starting the process of Adoption of the candidate projects, and opening the call for the local project coordinator. • As it’s the term when we are seeking more collaborations with various organizations and Associations an External collaboration document will take place in the next month. The process of writing and implementing this document will involve various members through SWG and will be coordinated by the President. • MedSIN KMSA alumni Database: This will be a legacy database that will fill the gap between the old Expert alumni members of KMSA and the new generation.

Ayah Omer Suliman medsin.kmsa.secgen@gmail.com Three months spent, and a lifetime’s worth of lessons earned.

Achievements:

• Creating a comfortable yet professional work environment, which includes facilitating the amendment of our Local Team Bylaws to fit our work dynamic (we still have a long way to go though). • Facilitating seven TOMs (which are Team of Officials Meetings, and yes apparently we talk a lot! haha), including setting the agenda, sending invitations, writing meeting minutes as well as chairing these meetings too since our President was appointed very recently. • Overseeing the handover process as well as the AnnualWork Plan setting period of all officials. • Conducting individual online meetings as the executive board, one-on-one with each official on the team, to discuss their Annual Work Plans, provide feedback and pinpoint how we can assist them throughout their term. • Coordinating MedSIN-KMSA Head Start, which was the local team’s first joint activity of the term as all officials took part in the planning and preparations process, as well as the preparation and facilitation of sessions on their various standing committees / support divisions. The executive board (myself along with the Treasurer and Acting-President at the time) also presented a session highlighting our main tasks and responsibilities. • Supporting and providing approval to all local team activities that have been executed so far, after providing feedback to make sure they are as spectacular and impactful as possible. • Coordinating the first and second calls for local team assistants, including assisting the rest of the team in interviewing and selecting their assistants. This is still ongoing since not all assistants positions have been filled yet. • I have also appointed a Secretary General Monitoring Assistant who is Mohamed Hisham - batch 96 (yay!). This is a completely new position in the Local Team, which I hope will ensure the sustainability of my position and reduce my workload. We had our first meeting recently and I will be delegating some of my tasks to my assistant throughout the term.

11

• I am currently working with the President, LPO, LOME, LORA and my Monitoring Assistant on drafting KMSA’s Project Guidelines, which will ensure not only the smooth handling of KMSA Projects, but also their impact on medical students and the community. • Assisting the External Affairs Secretary and Treasurer in coordinating the third and fourth calls for KMSA TO positions as well as representing our LMO on a national level, which our newly-appointed President is now also responsible for.

Upcoming Plans: • Finalising MedSIN-KMSA’s Project Guidelines with the rest of the team, and then following this up with promoting the concept of projects to the General Assembly, accepting the submission of project proposals and finally moving on to the project implementation stage. • Supporting my assistant in creating and implementing a more systematic and precise method of monitoring and evaluating official’s monthly progression reports, that are submitted to me as SecGen every month. • Creating and implementing a system that will allow me to monitor work-related mental health issues of the members of the local team, and effectively find ways to tackle them. • Conducting more TOMs (surprise, surprise) for which ‘Calls for Observers’ will be shared with KMSA members so they can attend these meetings and gain valuable insight on the functioning of the Local Team. • Writing and sharing MedSIN-KMSA’s half-term report, which will include all achievements, activities conducted, obstacles faced, meetings conducted, etc. relevant to our LMO. • Assisting the President and Treasurer in nurturing existing external partnerships and creating new ones.

Ahmed Rifaat Ali Bakri medsin.kmsa.treasurer@gmail.com “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery”. –Charles Dickens

Achievements:

As you know, dear reader, the treasurer position is totally new to MedSIN-KMSA LT. In other words, before this term, someone holding the position of Treasurer did not exist. Of course, this made the work harder but also more interesting. Anyway, one of my main goals is to set up the working pathway so that the next treasurer doesn’t notice a difference compared to any other old position. Since my appointment on 17th January, I started working with the SecGen in managing all LT affairs. Since the early beginnings, we were coordinating the first LT joint activity of this term, which was “KMSA Head Start”. In which, I presented a session in company with the rest of the Executive Board under the name “Welcome to the EB”.I also worked with the LORA and TSDD in managing finances for their activities. An important thing to mention is that I received the outgoings’ exchange fees for both SCOPE and SCORE, and coordinated the payment process to deliver the fees to their targeted destinations and facilitate payments’ tracking. In addition, I introduced the idea of having EB assistants to maintain the sustainability, but unfortunately, no valid applications were received in both the first two calls (sad face). As the Executive Board, we work closely with all the TOs, facilitate their work and ensure the unity of the team. Thus, me and the SecGen were assisting the External Affairs Secretary in finding qualified candidates and later opening the 3rd and 4th call for TOs. Also, we worked with this TOs in the selection of their assistants. Moreover, we had individual meetings with them to discuss and suggest feedback on their annual working plans. Lastly but not the least, we worked collectively with the External Affairs Secretariat in external representation of KMSA at the national level.

Upcoming Plans:

1. Appoint the 2 general assistants. 2. Establish KMSA LT financial IOGs. 3. Create a template for financial reports. 4. Formulate a fundraising strategy and sponsorship materials. 5. Work with the TSDD to conduct fundraising and financial control trainings. 6. Seek for new collaborations and partnerships with the rest of the EB.

After my appointment on January 17th, I have processed the handovering process with the ex-LORA/ Aisha Adil ,and worked on the annual work plan that I intend to work on with this term. 21

• Conducted The FIRST Physical Activity in KMSA for two years which was Women’s Health and Rights Symposium: The sessions that were included in the symposium: 1. Human rights and Women rights session: • Speaker: Mohammed Hashim Hassan - Human Rights Trainer: • This part tackle the basic human rights and women’s rights that are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the intersection of human rights and women’s rights , international women’s Bill of rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Woman ( CEDAW ). 2. The role of women in union and political work: • Speaker: Ms. Mervat Alnail - FFC negotiations team: • This session tackled the important issues, which are: 1/ How to motivate women to unionize and enable them to access decision - making positions, 2/ how to activate this role of women within trade union institutions, and 3/ what are the prominent and main obstacles that prevent women from participating in union work fields. 3. Access to SRH services: • Speaker: Areej Abd Almajid - Former SCORA Regional Assistant for Africa. • Most of people face a number of obstacles accessing sexual and reproductive health services , this session tackles this issue by clarifying the reasons behind this issue, how to provide high quality sexual and reproductive health as a future healthcare providers, a primary strategy of health programs to increase access to SRH services , the indicators that measure access along multiple dimensions : geographical/ physical, economic, administrative and psychosocial. • The activity was carried out on the 8th of March, and aimed to celebrate International Woman’s Day in recognition of her great role in society, KMSA SCORA in collaboration ASDO , entitled Women’s Health and Rights, in AlBaghdadi Hall in the Medical Campus of Khartoum University. In this symposium we wanted every woman and girl to realize the rights that are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . We also stood for other rights that are vital for women’s rights. We stood for a woman’s right to decide if and when she has children, and to have high-quality health care that means she won’t die in pregnancy or during childbirth. We know female genital mutilation is a violation of girls’ rights, and must be eliminated. And we stood for the right of every woman to live equally and free from discrimination, no matter her sexuality or identity. Only when women and girls have full access to their rights – from equal pay and land ownership rights to sexual rights, freedom from violence, access to education, and maternal health rights – will true equality exist. Only when women have taken leadership and peacemaking roles and have an equal political voice will economies and countries be transformed. And only then will all women and girls have the self-determination they are entitled to.

Upcoming plans: • Appointment of the rest of SCORA Local Team. • Finalising MedSIN-KMSA’s Project Guidelines with the rest of the team, and then following this up with promoting the concept of projects to the General Assembly, accepting the submission of project proposals and finally moving on to the project implementation stage. • Seeking funds/ partnerships. • Access to Safe Abortion Program. • In collaboration with EMSA SCORA/ Elrazi University on Access to Safe Abortion Program (this will be include REDx/SCORA Talk in Safe Abortion, National Sessions, and discussion clubs). • Initiation of the Gender-Based Violence Project in collaboration with Action for Social Development Organization and United Nation Development Programme. • Creation of KMSA SCORA Pages on Facebook and Instagram including SRHR content. • Red Round Table : Red round table is the name of SCORA discussion club, for all SCORAngles from different levels at Khartoum university to share their knowledge, opinions, skills and to further discuss different SRHR topics. the discussion is very important in SCORA because members come from different backgrounds, different cultures and have different opinions regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights topics, we in SCORA emphasis on the importance of providing a safe space that’s free from stigma and discrimination for our member ,somewhere they can reflect on their personal experiences and opinions in a culturally respected fashion , hence I came up with the Idea of discussion clubs in the previous term. These IOGs are targeting the SCORE Local Team, SCORE members, outgoings, incoming as well as contact persons, and for the purpose of defining and systemising all the circumstances and processes to ensure their roles.

Here are some other achievements I have succeeded to attain: 1. Selection and Following up with the Outgoing Students for the research exchange season 20/21: • The selection process included marking of CVs and conducting of interviews. Two committees have been created by KMSA External Affairs Secretariat for the previously mentioned procedures so as to ensure professionality, fairness and unbiasedness. I myself was a part of both committees. • 23 research exchange contracts have been distributed to the students who applied inorder of their total scores. • 8 students from last term have had their exchange program postponed to this season so we have a total of 31 outgoing students • Tracking sheets have been created to follow up with the outgoings • A google drive folder has been created containing all the necessary documents and information which the outgoing students will need throughout their exchange process • An exchange 101 session has been facilitated by me to the outgoing students, with the addition of the Application Process (filling the AF and CoD precisely)
