Courses for adult learners in Medway
August 2009 to July 2010
Welcome I am pleased to introduce the adult learning directory for 2009/10. It offers a wide range of courses and should be particularly valuable for those who need to re-skill in the recession and
for those who want to employ their leisure time usefully by acquiring new skills and knowledge. As ever, we have tried to ensure that the courses are delivered in various locations, so that some will be taking place near to where you live. I want to encourage you to come and try something
different and make new friends with similar interests. Remember learning can also be great fun – come and try it. Cllr Howard Doe Portfolio Holder for Community Services Medway Council
Welcome to the 2009/10 programme of courses at Medway Adult and Community Learning Service (MACLS)
These are challenging economic times for all of us. While it has always been our belief that adult learning matters, there is certainly now a recognition at the highest levels of government that during an economic downturn it is essential. Learning encourages resilience, self-confidence and a positive outlook. Thousands of Medway residents enrol on our courses every year, knowing that our wonderful team of experienced, dedicated and friendly tutors will provide an enjoyable and stimulating environment in which to develop new skills and interests: Whether you want to discover your artistic flair or dance your cares away, learn to play Mah Jongg or build a bee box with your kids to do your bit for the environment – there is something for you … and you 2
can meet new people and make new friends. On 17 October 2009 we will have a full day’s programme to support the National Family Learning Festival. This year we hope to tempt an even larger number of grandparents to come along and join in the fun. On Saturday, 20 March 2010 we will be running our Carousel of Dance and Fitness Taster courses to raise money for charity. To meet the needs of people who work outside Medway and commute every day we will be running a larger Saturday programme to ensure that no-one is left out. Look out for the special centre pages which list our Saturday provision, arranged by date for easy reference.

On Thursdays we host a Women’s Institute market at the Rochester Centre where you can buy homemade cakes, free-range eggs, crafts and books in the foyer. Call into the Gallery Café for a cup of tea. We listen to our learners and our partners and refresh our programme continuously in response to the feedback. It is our aim to ensure that there is a wide choice of high quality learning opportunities for everyone. New courses are publicised at the centres and also keep an eye on our website so that you don’t miss out. We hope that you will enjoy learning with MACLS in 2009/10 Sue Hopkins Adult Learning Manager

Introduction to Psychology: criminality, crime and deviance
The Mad Woman in the Attic fiends, fears and fantasies in 19th and 20th century literature What frightens us? Is it always something in the outside world, or do we perhaps harbour fears and fantasies within ourselves? Do we secretly enjoy being terrified, safe in the comfort of our favourite armchair, or is that through confronting our worst nightmares, we hope to conquer them? Could this be why we enjoy reading books that alarm, terrify, disgust or mystify us? In this short course we shall be examining these issues as explored by a range of authors including Charlotte Bronte, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Stephen King, Harper Lee, CS Lewis, Ursula le Guin, Cormac McCarthy and Gaston Le Roux. Other important enrolment information Waiting lists • If your chosen course is full and there are no alternatives, we will ask if you wish to be placed on a waiting list. We may have a cancellation or be able to start another class. If you enrol on a course and subsequently decided not to attend (prior to the start date) please let us know as there may be someone waiting for a place. Late enrolments • Courses will run when they have reached the minimum level for viability. In some cases there may still be spaces which can be enrolled when the course has already started. If there is a course that interests you please ask. Enquiries are welcomed throughout the year. Course changes • Our courses usually run as advertised but we cannot guarantee this. On some occasions they may have to be closed or altered following the publication of the directory. This is usually in response to circumstances outside our control.
