can to maintain our diverse and affordable offer to the Medway community throughout the challenging economic days ahead. You do not need to enrol to visit one of our centres – they are in themselves a hub of community life – you can drop in and have a cup of tea at the Gallery cafés and enjoy at your leisure the fabulous art work of our students which is exhibited on a continuous basis (and refreshed regularly). We also deliver our courses out of more than 50 community-based locations such as schools, libraries and children’s centres, so wherever you live there will be a course available to you. Check out pages 10 and 11 for the details of courses at our brand new evening centre at Hundred of Hoo school on the Peninsula. So there’s no time like the present to make a nice cup of tea, put your feet up and browse the directory. We are sure that you will find something of interest. For more detailed information about any of the courses phone 01634 338400 or visit our website at www.medway.gov.uk/ adultlearning. We look forward to welcoming you into our extended Medway Adult and Community Learning Service (MACLS) family in 2010-11. Sue Hopkins Adult Learning Manager

ur focus this year is on enhancing local delivery so that more people than ever can participate in learning. In 2009/10 more than 7,000 adults and young people found something that they wanted to learn with us. Our youngest customer was just sixmonths old and happily oblivious when he attended a baby massage course with his mum; while our oldest learner is 84-years-old and still enjoying an active and creative life. Between them our learners notched up more than 10,000 enrolments in courses that cover all sorts of subjects and skills. Some wanted to learn for the sheer pleasure of getting to grips with something new, while others were realising a lifelong ambition to get a particular qualification or to take active steps to make a real life change. Many families decided to learn together and discovered the ways in which it can enhance their relationships and family life. The benefits of learning are many and varied. Apart from the obvious advantage of gaining new skills, learning supports the development of confidence and self-esteem, helping you to make new friends. Continuing to participate in learning helps to keep you healthy, both mentally and physically. We embrace the view that learning throughout life is a basic human right and we will do whatever we

Our family learning day sessions also offer parents and children the chance to spend some quality time together, while learning valuable skills such as cookery, crafts, sports and leisure. We are committed to giving everyone the chance to learn something new and I would encourage anybody, no matter

Computing for beginners first steps If you would like to learn how to use a computer but don't know where to start, then the courses below are what you need. They will take you slowly from how to use a mouse and keyboard through to creating simple word processed documents using Microsoft Word, saving, printing and managing your files. There is no pressure of examination, just an easy introduction on how to use a computer. As many people new to the world of computing and ICT have never switched on a computer before, the emphasis is on learners working at their own pace, and these courses follow a very informal and relaxed procedure.

Certificate in Combined Studies (CCS) modules – for qualification

An Introduction to psychology: the biological approach

Taking a Certificate in Combined Studies module is an excellent way to try out a new subject and gain Higher Education credits at certificate level. You do not need to have gained any specific qualifications to apply and you may use credits gained to work towards the Certificate in Combined Studies or with guidance a specialised certificate.

Psychology Introduction to psychology: criminality, crime and deviance Crime and criminal justice as well as issues of law and order remain topical in contemporary society. Studying this module will allow for exploration of the social problems of our times and the images of crime and deviance displayed by media and culture. Thursday, 10am-12noon, 30/9/10 for 20 sessions Fee: £240, tutor: Sarah Hamilton Gillingham, code: CM482, credits: 30

Have you ever wondered how your brain works, how you remember, why you dream or what can causes problems with mental health? Biological psychology explores such topics by focusing on the biological basis of human behaviour. This module looks at a wide range of subjects, including the structure of the brain, how you see and hear, memory and language as well as aspects of mental health. Thursday, 1-3pm, 30/9/10 for 20 sessions Fee: £240, tutor: Sarah Hamilton Gillingham, code: CM207, credits: 30

Open Studies Short Courses Our Open Studies learners are passionate about the subject they are studying but usually have no need to study for qualification. These courses are also an option for ELQ students who wish to study with the University but who already hold an equivalent or higher level qualification (and who would therefore be liable to pay a significantly higher rate for CCS modules).

Archaeology Castles in the Landscape This course examines ideas behind the development of the medieval castle defence, wealth and prestige. Students consider castles within the British Isles, but when studying specific examples will concentrate on those of the South-East. Wednesday, 7-9pm, 28/9/10 for 6 sessions Fee: £75, tutor: Alan Ward Rochester, code: OS138

The Romans in the South East This course examines the period c.100 BC to c.AD 500 and concentrates on the impact of the Roman Empire on the South-East. Fees Fees Most of our classes are subsidised by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). To be eligible for SFA funding you need to be aged 16 and over and to have been living continuously for the last three years in the UK or to be an EU national (or spouse or child of an EU national) who has been resident in an EU country continuously for at least the last three years. If this does not apply to you please enquire at the office for further clarification. You will still be able to join a class but will need to pay an unsubsidised rate. Tuition fees Fees are charged according to regulations relevant to particular courses. The following conditions apply to courses marked with an F suffix. Most courses for adult learners are partially subsidised by the Skills Funding Agency and learners therefore pay the standard fee (Fee A). Learners in receipt of income-based benefit have tuition fees fully subsidised by the SFA in which case Fee C applies. Discretionary concessions on tuition fees Most courses with the suffixes A, F and S are subject to discretionary concessions on tuition fees. There is only one rate of concession available. This is 30 per cent for the current academic year. Please see the concession table for details.

Additional charges Many courses involve costs other than tuition fees. These are detailed on the course information sheet for each course. Course information sheets can be requested from the office or downloaded from www.medway.gov.uk/learning Additional costs include things such as workbooks, materials, equipment and resources, examining board registration fees, examination administration, examination fees, course registration fee and certification fees. If payable on enrolment, they are shown as other fees on the course information sheet and are included in the course fee. We are not able to offer a reduction on additional costs for any courses. Courses with qualifications It is a requirement of the Skills Funding Agency that learners who are enrolled on courses with qualifications must be aiming to gain the qualification and therefore need to register with the relevant examination board at the start of the course. All learners are required to pay examination fees in full, with the exception of 16-18 year olds and Skills for Life (English and maths) learners.

No concessions are available on courses not funded by the SFA. These courses usually have the suffix N.

Fees Easy payment plan While our courses offer excellent value for money, we are aware that for some of our learners it would be helpful to be able to spread the payments. We therefore offer an easy payment plan for courses costing £86 or more or lasting 15 weeks or longer. We regret we are unable to accept instalment payments from learners who do not meet the residency criteria. • Courses of 15-20 weeks (or costing £86 - £115) can be paid in four instalments. • Courses of 21 weeks or longer (or costing more than £116) can be paid in six instalments. • The first payment is due on enrolment (cheques payable to Medway Council). • You can only pay subsequent instalments by standing order through your bank or building society. • For courses starting in September, payments from your bank or building society will begin on 1 September. • If you withdraw from a course, any instalments which are still owed must be paid in full. • The total cost of the course must be paid before your course finishes. To take advantage of the easy payment plan:

Learner services All learners are issued with a handbook at the first session that explains all they need to know about learning with Medway Adult and Community Learning Service. Here are some of the things you may want to know prior to enrolment: Childcare Facilities The Gillingham Centre offers childcare provision. This is not run by Medway Adult and Community Learning Service and places cannot be guaranteed. Parents should enquire about availability before enrolling on a course. Phone: 01634 856380 for information. Support for Learners with Disabilities At Medway Adult and Community Learning Service we are committed to helping learners succeed whatever their background or additional needs. If you have a disability or any other support needs please phone Heather Drew, our Learner Services Manager on 01634 338405 to discuss your requirements.

1. Fill in the enrolment form. Tick standing order for method of payment. 2. Calculate the amount of the instalment payments. 3. Complete and sign the standing order mandate, showing the monthly payments. 4. If enrolling by post, send a cheque for the first instalment together with the completed standing order mandate and enrolment form to the Gillingham Centre. 5. If enrolling in person, take a cheque, cash, debit or credit card to one of our centres together with the completed standing order mandate and enrolment form.

Discretionary Learner Support Fund (dLSF) A limited fund is made available by the Skills Funding Agency to provide additional financial support to those learners on courses where the code ends in F and are in receipt of a means-tested benefit. This fund is available to help learners with:

Refunds Refunds are only issued to learners who withdraw more than two weeks before the start date. A £10 administration charge will be deducted from all refunds. After a course has started, refunds are only given if the course is closed. The amount refunded will be a pro-rata amount calculated on the length of time the course ran. If MACLS has to cancel a course due to low enrolments, full refunds will be given to all learners. This decision is usually made one week before the scheduled start date for the course.

Application forms are available from the centre offices. For more information please phone Heather Drew, Learner Services Manager, on 01634 338405.

Class cancellations Every effort is made to run courses as advertised. In the event of low enrolment numbers we may have to cancel a course but we will endeavour to offer alternative classes. If there is no suitable alternative, or if you do not wish to accept the alternative class, a full refund will be given.

Refreshment facilities The Gillingham and Rochester Centres have cafes serving snacks and drinks. Class breaks provide an opportunity to relax and socialise with the other learners on your course. Refreshment services at other centres vary.

Courses may be cancelled for other reasons (usually for reasons beyond our control) and whilst the offer is made in good faith, it cannot be guaranteed.

• exam and registration fees; • crèche or childcare fees; • books and/or equipment; • travel costs.

Study facilities We have a resources room in the Gillingham Centre where you can call in and use a computer to type-up course notes or to do research on the Internet. Public access computers are available at Rochester Library (within the Rochester Centre).

Support with English, maths and language English and maths support may be available if you are studying certain subjects. We may also be able to provide language support if English is not your first language. Please contact: Toni Oxlee on 01634 338417 or Barbara Dingwall on 01634 338473.

Course changes Our courses usually run as advertised but we cannot guarantee this. On some occasions they may have to be closed or altered following the publication of the directory. This may be in response to circumstances outside our control. Waiting lists If your chosen course is full and there are no suitable alternatives, you can be put onto a waiting list. If places become available we will contact you. If there are sufficient numbers of people waiting for particular courses we may be able to run additional courses (please see below). Additional or extension courses If there are sufficient numbers of people on a waiting list, we can arrange to start an additional course. Such courses are in addition to the planned programme and in these circumstances we cannot offer discretionary concessions. All course fees for additional courses are at the standard rate. If there are sufficient numbers of people who wish to extend their course beyond its planned end date we are happy to consider this. Extension courses are in addition to the planned programme and in these circumstances we cannot offer discretionary concessions. If your group wishes to apply for an extension, please ask your course tutor for details. Late enrolments Courses will run when they have reached the minimum numbers for viability. In some cases there may still be places available, which can be enrolled when the course has already started. The fee charged to enter a course that has already commenced will be a pro-rata amount calculated on the length of time that a course has left to run. For many courses it is possible to join at any time but examination courses cannot be joined after the end of the third week. If there is a course you are interested in, please enquire at the office.
