Welcome www.celebratemedway2012.co.uk

Welcome This year presents many exciting opportunities for residents. With important anniversaries throughout the year that are significant both nationally and also locally, here in Medway. February brings an important date in literary history - the bi-centenary of Dickens birth. Having spent his childhood years here, Medway provided inspiration for, and featured in, many of his novels making this anniversary particularly important for Medway. The Chatham and Rochester branch of the Dickens Fellowship will be hosting events throughout February to commemorate the 200th anniversary of one of Britain’s best-loved authors, and our strong connections with him. Talks, readings, shows, concerts and a cream tea are just some of the ways you can celebrate Dickens. From old to new, another much-anticipated occasion on the horizon is the announcement of Britain’s newest city. Should we be successful in our bid this would further recognise this great place we call home. These are just a few highlights from the start of our year of celebration, but there’s much more to come. In recognition of just how much is going on throughout this significant year, this is the first of six bi-monthly programmes, full of events happening right on your doorstep. Medway has always boasted a thriving calendar of events. Add to this a number of special events for 2012 and I’m sure you’ll agree we’re set for a significant year.

Passing Reflections - Rosie James Craft Case - Andrea Walsh, Alison Lowry

Opening reception

Anonymous passers by, individuals and crowds, are the subject of textile artist Rosie James’ investigations. Within her figurative thread drawings and screen prints, she draws attention to often-overlooked details found in everyday occurrences and looks to capture the commonality found within groups. The unnoticed becomes noticed, in her playful and seductive textiles. Rochester Art Gallery’s Craft Case presents ceramics and glass faceted boxes, together with a selection of jars and vessels, by Andrea Walsh. Alison Lowry’s fused textiles in glass of family heirlooms, capture and preserves traces of the wearer. Rochester Art Gallery and Craft Case, High Street, Rochester

Sat, 24 Mar, 12.30 - 3.30pm
