T

he warmth of wood... Have you ever entered a home and said to yourself, “This feels nice—really comfortable?”

Many things contribute to the success of a home’s interior—design, colors, furnishings. The natural beauty and warmth of hardwoods is also a key element to what many refer to as a “homey feel” or “warm and inviting.” Mouldings are significant in making that happen. From the simple to the extravagant, Ferche has the ideas, styles, designs and wood species to please the most discriminating. We hope this guide to mouldings assists you in finding the perfect look for your home.

3

Standard Series The moulding selection process can be a complicated one. The first several pages contain groups of mouldings that would be considered standards of the Ferche lineup. These seven groupings are all shown in red oak, a mainstay in the upper midwest. However, any profile can be obtained in any wood specie. As you continue through the brochure, you will discover more ideas, options, styles and looks that will guide you through the process and help you define your home’s interior. This page shows two styles in red oak that are often used in starter homes. The casing and base perform the function designed for mouldings—cover an unfinished edge, such as drywall, in order to give a finished appearance. Chair rail is used to protect a wall from chair damage or to separate the upper and lower walls which may have different colors or textures. Crown is used as an architectural accent, defining the ceiling line with an interesting shape, texture or color.

The simplest and most economical mouldings are oftentimes referred to as “Ranch” and “Princeton.” The casing is generally 7/16" thick and 2 1/4" wide. The base is 3/8" x 2 3/4". These sizes are adequate for modestly priced homes. Larger mouldings are more appropriate for more expensive homes.

Standard Series

Flat Casing & Base

Crown F611 3/4" x 3 5/8"

A flat casing and base are often used with a design style called “Craftsman” or “Mission.” This style calls for very clean lines with minimal curves and profiling of the mouldings. Red oak, with its interesting and more active graining, is a species that works well with the contrasting simple lines of this style. The examples shown here have a 3 1/4" casing and a 5 1/4" base. This size would be a move-up package from the most economical sizes shown on the previous page. This size is well suited for rooms with 9' ceilings or larger proportions.

Casing F132 11/16" x 3 1/4" Base F280 (veneered) 5/8" x 5 1/4"

This moulding package contains a bevel casing, similar to the casing on the previous page, but thicker and wider. It could be categorized as traditional or colonial. The crown has been enhanced by the addition of a base moulding behind it, which gives the crown a heavier look without adding as much cost as a one piece crown of the same perceived size. The base shown here is a hardwood veneer over an MDF core with a solid hardwood top edge. This product is less expensive than a solid base of the same size. The chair rail is wider with a more defined profile shape.

Chair Rail F722 11/16" x 3"

These two examples show 3 1/4" bevel casing being used with a backband, bringing the overall width to 3 3/4". The backband, selected to match the style of the casing, gives the casing a more substantial look and works well if the base or chair rail (which butts into the casing) is thicker than the casing alone. This gives the casing a much heavier look without a significant increase in price. Making the same shape in one piece of wood is much more expensive.

F637 Crown 3/4" x 5 1/4" F638 Dentil 5/8" x 1"

The crown and chair rail to the right contain notched mouldings called dentil. The dentil adds another set of shadows and visual texture to give interest to the mouldings. This moulding package could be used successfully in traditional or colonial settings. The scale of these mouldings is appropriate for homes with 9' and taller ceilings and rooms of larger proportions.

The mouldings for those who would like to express themselves with a creative flair is F169. This moulding can be used with 2 types of inserts, a reeded one (F169B) to add shadow lines or a smooth one (F169A) which can be clear-coated, painted or wrapped in a complimentary wall covering. These are used with plinth and corner blocks. Now you can redecorate your mouldings when you redecorate your room.

Craftsman Collection Window and Door Toppers Exquisite looks. Quick to install. Designed to be cost effective. The toppers are assembled by Ferche Millwork to fit your door and window openings. Mix and match wood species to suit your interior design theme. The system has been designed to give you the look of luxury for little more than the price of a simple cased opening.

The 3/4" thick topper measures approximately 6" tall at ends and, on those with a top arc, 7" in the center. The casing with backband measures 3 3/4 4" wide. Depending on the backband style, the sides will allow for a base/basecap with up to a 3/4" - 1" projection. With the system, installation is quick. The finish carpenter simply installs the sides, sets the top, nails it in place and moves on. Labor savings and engineered design savings on the sides makes for an exquisite appearance at a reasonable cost—a combination that will please builders as well as homebuyers.

Craftsman Collection The system gives you the option of mixing various species to bring together other woods used in the house. For example, the use of a walnut floor and cherry doors can be unified by using trim containing both species. Or, the use of a single specie can accentuate the design of the mouldings around an opening in a more subtle fashion. Either way, the window and door openings make a positive statement regarding the thought and consideration given to the design of the interior trim package. The casing and backbands can be ordered in any combination or specie as sides, pieces or random length product.

EZ Beam

Like all classic beauty, the beauty of the Ferche EZ BEAM interlocking ceiling beam design is based on the principle of simplicity. Simple, classic-beam design. Simple, user-friendly installation. Key to EZ BEAM’s simplicity is the interlocking design. This interlocking feature ensures a fail-safe registration of parts, and provides the nailing channel through which the parts are fastened. Once filled, the nail holes will be virtually invisible. EZ Beam makes installation as easy to understand as it is to accomplish. You’ll take great pride in the finished job. No major remodeling. No weeks-onend of unlivable workspace. Adding the EZ BEAM system to your home is a simple, beautiful way to add value, charm and a rich sense of quality to any living space. Whatever the species, a Ferche EZ Beam system will add distinction and visual impact to any room.

Installation

Sides F471X - 3/4" x 9 1/4" F471U - 3/4" x 7 1/4" F471S - 3/4" x 5 1/2" F471L - 3/4" x 3 1/2"

An EZ BEAM ceiling can be laid out in proportion to the custom specifications of any room. Beam sides differ in height, the tallest trimming the perimeter of the room, a shorter beam providing the main beam structure running the length of the room, the smallest serving as the cross members between the main beams.

Bottom F472L - 3/4" x 3 1/2" F472S- 3/4" x 5 1/2"

25

EZ Beam

Step one of the installation is to attach beam side to blocking. The nails securing the side to the blocking will be covered later with bed moulding. Fit the bottom component into the side member groove and clamp into position. Nail side member to beam bottom through nailing groove. Repeat procedure to attach opposing side member. Continue until all beam sides and bottoms have been positioned and nailed. Install bed moulding around the top inside corner of the square formed by the installed beams.

The EZ BEAM structure is installed starting with the perimeter components, followed by the main beams and finally the cross members. Blocking of the appropriate width is screwed to the ceiling sequentially, that is, for the perimeter components first, followed by application of the perimeter beams, blocking for the main runners next, followed by application of the runners themselves, and finally, blocking for the cross members followed by the application of the cross members themselves. Kiln-dried blocking material or plywood (not dimensional lumber) is recommended to minimize shrinkage, and the resultant gaps between beam members.

Attach blocking

26

A suggested method of bed moulding installation is to install opposite sides, trimming the ends at 90 degrees. Then, after measuring the span length, trim the pieces with a 45 degree miter, cope the miter cut and install between the other two mouldings. An alternative method is to simply cut a 45 degree miter corner on all pieces. The finished result is a beautiful beamed ceiling with nice detailing without an excessive amount of labor. The design of the system speeds installation as well as adding to the cleanness of the look due to the inconspicuous placement of the fasteners.

Custom Products Solid & Veneered

Historical reproductions, high-end residential, commercial or any project with architect involvement may call for mouldings not found in our standard product line. Ferche has developed its facility to efficiently handle just these types of moulding orders also. Both solid mouldings as well as veneered products can be engineered to meet your

specific requirements. Our moulders can process 11 1/2" widths. Wider moulding profiles can be designed in segments. Veneered products can be configured with a broad range of design parameters. New products can be designed and manufactured. Existing mouldings can be duplicated which match exactly. When you need custom, think Ferche!

Here is an example of a large casing requested by one of our customers. We received a rough sketch of the profile shape, measuring 2 1/4" thick by 4" wide. They requested it in red oak and cherry. In other cases, an actual sample of the moulding to be duplicated can be sent. We will match it exactly.

Our Grinding Room staff made a detailed CAD drawing of the profile and sent it to the customer for their approval.

With the approval given, a template was cut to the exact shape of the drawing.

27

Custom Products Solid & Veneered

The template was used to grind the knives needed for use in the moulder.

The product was manufactured on one of the many Weinig moulders Ferche uses in the plant.

The finished moulding was identical to the CAD drawing approved by the customer and has all of the high standards of product quality for which Ferche Millwork is known.

Types of Wood What wood species do you like? There are many things to take into consideration—cost, color, grain, hardness and others. If you will be using little or no stain in the finishing process, the characteristic color of the species is important. Some people think there is nothing more beautiful than clear-coated cherry when it is allowed to age into a dark, rich, reddishbrown. Others appreciate the natural beauty of lighter woods like hard maple or oak with a clear finish. If darker stains are to your liking, there is the opportunity to use a less costly type of wood and still achieve a beautiful look. Poplar, a lower priced hardwood, is used as a substitute for alder or cherry with good results and significant savings when stained and finished properly.

The hardwoods most commonly run by Ferche Millwork include red oak, poplar, hard maple, soft maple, birch and cherry. Any hardwood can be obtained and processed by Ferche. During a one year time period, we will process over 40 different varieties. There are obvious differences between wood species, especially when it comes to color, graining and pricing. One thing that is common among all wood species is the visual variety within the same species. There will be differences in color, hue, graining, density, mineral streaks, the amount of sapwood versus heartwood, internal stresses and on and on. That’s the nature of a product which grows under a variety of conditions over several decades in different geographical locations, and, what gives wood its beauty and character.

29

Types of Wood

There are also special characteristics among certain species to make note of... Red Oak Ferche obtains red oak from sawmills near its concentration yard in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, in the heart of the Appalachian Lumber region. This area produces trees which reach the best combination of good length structure and good color. Red oak coming from Southern Lumber regions (not used by Ferche) will have a much broader color range, with more gray and pinks, which puts it outside the range of what is the preferred wheat color. The red oak that we process has a good length and width structure along with good color.

Types of Wood Hard and Soft Maple We sell both hard maple and soft maple. Our hard maple will have a consistent white/cream color that people generally associate with maple. Longer lengths (up to 16') are available in small quantities. Soft maple will be less expensive, but has characteristics that many people don’t like. It will have more color variation than our hard maple, including more of a gray color tone. If clearcoated or stained, this will be noticeable, especially when compared to a maple door which will be made with hard maple veneers and solid stock. Soft maple lengths are not as good as hard maple, with a heavy concentration in the 8' to 12' range. When maple is stained, both hard and soft, it tends to get “blotchy” in areas which absorb stain more readily. This effect is much more noticeable in soft maple than in hard. The mouldings can be treated with a conditioner prior to staining to minimize this effect. Soft maple also has more short, squiggly, dark lines, which are the result of worm tracking. This is considered by some to be “character” and by others to be a defect. Most people will be more satisfied with the quality and look of hard maple.

Types of Wood

Poplar Poplar is the hardwood we recommend as a paintable product. It is one of the least expensive hardwoods that we produce. Poplar has a greenish hue with naturally occurring purple and black streaks. Ferche buys a select grade without the dark streaks which works well as a stainable product. Poplar has a good length structure and can be mixed successfully with other species, like alder, which comes only in shorter lengths. There will need to be some “tweaking” with stains to get the two species to color match, but the grain, texture and pore structure between these two species allows for a good match.

Poplar

Birch Birch, like maple, will tend toward blotchiness when stained. Birch lumber runs short. Mouldings will be available up to 12' long, heavy in the 8' to 10' range. There is a limited supply of lumber wider than 6".

Types of Wood

Alder (Clear and Knotty)

Knotty Alder

Alder has a short length structure and will be available up to 10' long and widths up to 6". Clear alder may have limited availability and may contain tight pin knots without being considered defective. Knotty alder can have broken knots with holes up to the size of a dime.

Cherry

Clear Alder

The red coloration associated with cherry comes from that part of the tree called the heartwood (center part of the log). The lighter part of the log, found on the outer perimeter of the tree, is called sapwood. The lumber we purchase for mouldings is the highest grade, but still contains some of the lighter sapwood. Therefore, the mouldings we sell will have a small amount of light color streaking. Small, dark streaks (pitch and gum pockets) are also common characteristics. Cherry may have some longer lengths up to 14', but only in small quantities.

33

Types of Wood

Black Walnut Walnut’s dark color is characteristic of its heartwood. Like cherry, it may have some light streaking. Walnut is usually limited to lengths up to 12' and widths up to 6". Due to a somewhat limited supply, the NHLA Grading Rules are less stringent when applied to walnut.

African Mahogany African mahogany is the variety Ferche generally uses in its products because it is more abundant than other varieties. It is harvested using environmentally sound practices. The length and width structure is good. The dark color of mahogany is often associated with the “old money” look.

Black Walnut

Hickory Hickory is often associated with a rustic decorating style. The light and dark pattern in the lumber is more informal. Hickory is a heavy wood and even more durable than red oak.

Company History

eputations have to be earned, no one can hand you one. Since its beginning in 1958, Ferche Millwork, Inc. has grown to be nationally recognized for its quality and service and has since set the standard for the hardwood moulding industry. Quality doesn’t happen by accident. It is the goal of many, achieved by some, but maintained by few. To maintain this high level of quality, you need to control the product through all phases of production. To do this, we start by buying only the finest quality hardwoods available from a growing number of trusted, reliable suppliers that have grown with us over the years.

R

This lumber is delivered to Ferche Millwork’s concentration yard in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, where each board is examined and graded by us. Only the best lumber will later be shipped to our manufacturing facility in Rice, Minnesota. Once graded, the lumber will be properly “stickered” (separated with wooden strips) and allowed to air dry to the correct moisture content. This air dried lumber will then be shipped and unloaded at our Minnesota facility where, under precisely controlled conditions, with the latest technology, we carefully dry the lumber in our kilns. This gives our lumber the highest degree of stability and machinability to maintain the finest finish possible on our mouldings. After drying, the lumber is processed for optimum yield, lengths and quality. We employ state-of-the-art technology with automated high speed equipment that holds to precise tolerances. With this equipment, we can supply our customers with the highest quality mouldings available.

49

Company History Ferche Millwork offers over 250 standard profiles, solid, veneered and fingerjointed, many of which are in stock for immediate delivery. For that special project, we also produce custom profiles in many species, all with minimum leadtimes. Ferche mouldings are known for their consistency in profiles; manufactured by knives sharpened in-house to our own templates, under the watchful eyes of our well-trained, skillful employees. Conservation of our natural resources is part of our daily operations. The short lumber blanks are utilized by fingerjointing them into useable products. We burn wood shavings to fire our boilers, which provide steam for our kilns and heat for our plant. A portion of our sawdust is used by local farmers for animal bedding. Nothing is wasted in the manufacture of our products. We made a commitment in 1958 that we’re here for the long haul. We have a great concern for the well-being of our customers, employees and our natural resources. We are committed to maintaining a safe, productive and healthy working environment for our employees. The goal we set is to provide our customers with a reliable source of the highest quality products and services possible. We offer excellent value in a hassle-free relationship.
