Welcome Your door. Life goes through it.® There’s a reason why a welcome mat is placed at the foot of a door. A door is the warm greeting as you enter the home. Conversely it is the welcoming promise of the world beyond as you leave those walls behind. The closing of a door can bring comfort and security. The opening leads to possibilities and wonder.

“When we were building our home, I honestly didn’t care, or even think about the doors that we would pick. I figured, ‘hey, if the door works, and it looks okay, then it’s fine by me.’ Then my brother handed me a Simpson catalog. That’s when I realized that I had a lot more options, and I started to get pretty picky about all my doors. I’m glad he brought Simpson to my attention – I have a whole lot more respect for door designs than I ever thought I would.”

“It’s true that sometimes husbands and wives have a hard time agreeing about the look of a home. At the start of this process, we had totally different ideas about our ‘perfect door’. But since we had so many options, it was easy to finally agree upon a design that resulted in an elegant, beautiful door.”

“Although my family always thought it was a little strange, I’ve always been into doors. That is, I truly believe that the door makes the house or the room. What catches your eye when driving by a house? The door. If that door just doesn’t cut it, don’t you view the house a lot differently? I definitely do – it’s the centerpiece of everything. So when it came time to choose a door for my house, you can imagine how special that door had to be. Thankfully Simpson feels the same way about doors as I do (although it’s not strange for them to feel that way!), so I got exactly what I wanted.”

“I've always had a knack for drawing. So when we wanted to find the perfect door for our dream home, I thought, why not just sketch out what I would love to have, then see if I can find something close. But with Simpson, they said, why just settle for close? They built the door exactly as I had envisioned it. No headaches. No worries. And best of all, no settling.”

"In a world of conformity and sameness, it's nice to find a product that allows you put your own unique stamp on it. I have, let's say, eclectic tastes. From the colors to the details, everything in my home reflects me. Of course I wanted my front door to do the same. It's the first thing anyone sees when they come to my house. That's why I had a Simpson door custom built for my front entry. Now, it's my door.

“I thought I knew exactly the type of door I wanted. That is until I took a peek into the Simpson catalog... then I wasn’t so sure. I definitely had a unique vision, but then started to realize that I could build upon that vision with a custom door. There were transom and sidelight options that hadn’t occurred to me, and along with size and width choices, I created my perfect door.”

performance series® upgrades Sometimes an exterior door needs additional protection from the demanding elements of Mother Nature. Developed for exterior doors that are subject to harsher environments, Performance Series is a selection of heavy-duty door components that deliver maximum protection for your finely crafted Simpson door. We currently offer two Performance Series options, UltraBlock ® and WaterBarrier ® technologies. The combination of these two technologies creates a door suited for the toughest exposures. And this protection is delivered without sacrificing the charm and craftsmanship you've come to expect from a Simpson door. After all, a beautiful door is only worth having if you can protect it.

WaterBarrier ® ®

What is WaterBarrier® Technology? One-piece Medium Density Overlay (MDO) on the outside for the very toughest exposures – commonly used on concrete forms and street signs Minimizes the possibility of stile and rail separation

Performance Series® Videos: simpsondoor.com/waterbarrier

Available for a variety of entry, sash and French doors, WaterBarrier technology combines a Medium Density Overlay (MDO) with PVC glazing bead and bar components to create an exterior that stops water in its tracks. Select your choice of wood species and you’ve got the best of both worlds: water-protection on the outside and the unmatched beauty of a real wood door on the inside. It’s a perfect alternative to an expensive cladded door, and exactly the type of innovation you’d expect from Simpson.

What is Medium Density Overlay? Typically used for traffic signs and concrete formwork, Medium Density Overlay (MDO) is a layer of resintreated fiber. This provides an extremely durable and smooth finish that is easy to paint. Additionally, MDO is specifically rated for exterior use, which means it’s safe from harsh elements, insects, or other outdoor hazards. It’s a perfect choice when needing additional protection for exterior doors in tough environments.

Eliminates checking on the face of the door Excellent durability and resists moisture absorption Overlay has thermoset acrylic latex primer topcoat, resulting in superior paint application Can use water or alkyd-based paints on finish PVC glazing bead and bar components provide moisture resistance Choose any species to match interior architecture Available for dozens of door designs

UltraBlock

®

Performance Series® Videos: simpsondoor.com/ultrablock

Long a favorite of Simpson’s most discriminating customers, UltraBlock technology features a composite block in the bottom of the stiles, where water infiltration can occur. Our exclusive Weather Seal™ process provides additional protection against moisture penetrating the bottom rail. It’s our version of the galoshes you splashed around in as a kid.

What is UltraBlock® Technology? Composite block material fingerjointed into the bottom of the stiles eliminates water infiltration Minimizes stile and rail separation

Reduces buckling and swelling of bottom rail and lower stile components Simpson offers UltraBlock protection as an option on all 1¾" thick doors.

The difference is in the details. Take our Queen Anne glass as an example. We start with seedy baroque glass and bevel each piece so the texture appears within the bevel. It's a detail that makes our glass unique and a feature that will make your entry a masterpiece.

Any Door. Any Wood.

Innerbond® v-groove panel Medex® v-groove panel

Looking to paint your Bungalow Series® door? Then consider specifying a Medex panel. Medex is manufactured from wood residues that have been pressure-cooked with steam and then rubbed apart into small, relatively uniform bundles of fiber. This process affords additional weather protection for exterior doors, and when painted, appears just like our standard wood panel.

While manufacturers continually look to do things faster, we feel it’s important to

Door Ways

slow down for some key steps in our manufacturing process. One example is the way we dry our wood. We dry it slowly, taking between nine and fourteen days in our dry kilns, in order to achieve optimum moisture content. Any quicker can result in problems down the road, and that’s a shortcut we’re just not willing to take.

Interior

WaterBarrier® technology, a component of our Performance Series, helps preserve the beauty of your Simpson doors. Available for a variety of entry, sash and French doors, this innovation affords you superior water protection. WaterBarrier combines a medium density overlay (MDO) over the exterior surface of the door with PVC bars and glazing beads for an exterior that’s not only resistant to moisture, but provides a beautiful surface for paint. And when combined with any wood species on the inside, you can match your interior woodwork and keep the warmth and natural beauty that wood provides.

Care & Finishing Your Simpson door has been handcrafted to last for years to come. And like any piece of fine furniture, it needs proper finishing and periodic maintenance to keep it performing at its best. For a long-lasting, beautiful Simpson door, please follow the instructions as outlined in the appropriate section below. Failure to follow Simpson's care & finishing recommendations will void the door's warranty.

Finishing Options Because Simpson doors are crafted with only the finest materials, you can choose from a wide variety of stain or paint possibilities. Paint dealers have a broad selection of color chips on hand to demonstrate the look you can achieve when staining fine wood such as Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock or Red Oak used in Simpson doors. If you choose paint instead of stain, you can apply either oil-base or latex resin-base paints over an oil-base primer. However, take care in following the finishing instructions provided here. Also, be sure to evaluate the conditions your Simpson door must endure, such as direct exposure to severe climates, before deciding on the specific finish to use. All Simpson doors must be finished shortly before or after installation. Caution: If during the finish process you are having issues and/ or identify problems with your door, stop finishing immediately and contact the company from where you purchased your doors.

Handling 1. Do not walk on any door units. Some units contain glass. 2. Avoid dragging doors across one another and keep doors clean. 3. Store flat on a level surface in a dry, well ventilated building. 4. Doors should be conditioned to average prevailing relative humidity of the locality before hanging. 5. Doors should not be subjected to extreme or rapid changes in heat or humidity. Avoid sudden changes such as forced heat to dry out a building. 6. If the doors are to be stored on the job site, all surfaces including ends and edges must be sealed with an effective quality oil-base sealer in order to prevent undue moisture absorption.

Preparation For Finishing 1. Before applying the first coat of finish, remove all handling marks, raised grain and other undesirable blemishes by sanding all surfaces with 180 grit sandpaper. To avoid cross-grain scratches, sand with the grain. Note: small amounts of grease, oil, or pitch can be wiped clean with mineral spirits. care & finishing

2. Adjust or align components if necessary before finishing. Wood panels “float” and may be knocked into alignment with a wood block and hammer. Be careful not to damage door.

simpsondoor.com

174

|

1.800.simpson

3. After sanding, clean the door thoroughly with a cloth to remove all dust or foreign material. Do not use caustic or abrasive cleaners. 4. Hang door before finishing, and then remove to finish properly. Doors must be properly sealed prior to installation of hardware and exposure to moisture or weather. Properly finish door immediately before prolonged storage. 5. All surfaces of the door must be properly finished. The edges (top, bottom and sides) should be coated with each and every coat of finish that is applied to the exterior surface of the door. Doors must be dry before finishing. 6. On doors that are glazed with clear glass, the finish used should be flowed from the wood slightly onto the glass. This will provide assurance against water leakage and protect the glazing compound “putty” from drying out. 7. Note: It is the finisher's responsibility to protect glass prior to and during finishing. If using tape, conduct a test of the tape being used on a small area of the glass before applying to a large surface. After finishing, remove the tape as soon as possible. 8. On doors that have plastic film protection on glass, removal of plastic film protection immediately after applying the finish is required. Failure to remove the plastic film at this time may cause harm to the glass and will create difficulty in removing the film at a later time. Do not use razor blades or sharp objects to remove the film or clean the glass. These items will scratch the glass.

Exterior Finishing Stain-and-Clear Finish The first coat should be a stain-and-sealer, a combination of stain-and-sealer, which colors the door and seals the surface. It is available in a wide range of colors. The stain-and-sealer should have an alkyd-resin base. Under no circumstances should a lacquer-based toner or any other lacquer-based finish be used on exterior doors. The second and third coats (two top coats minimum) may be a solvent-borne (oil-base, alkyd resin-base, polyurethane resin-base) or a water-borne (latex resin-base) clear finish. See notes (1) and (2) below. The advantages and disadvantages of solvent-borne vs. waterborne clear finishes are as follows: 1. Solvent-Borne Advantages: Faster drying, harder and more water resistant. May be applied under variable weather conditions. Disadvantages: Subject to ultraviolet degradation and not as flexible or durable as water-borne clear finish.

Note: Do not sand between coats of clear latex. All stain-andclear finishes will perform measurably better if protected from the direct effects of sunlight and weathering, and refinishing will not be required as frequently.

Paint Finish Either oil-base or latex resin-base exterior grade paints may be used with success on panel doors. Oil-base paints offer more resistance to the passage of water (liquid and vapor) than latex resin-base paints, but the latter have better durability and color retention. Doors should be sealed with a good quality oil-base primer followed by two top coats of either an oil-base or latex resin-base paint. Of course, both primer and top coat should be made by the same manufacturer and designed to be used as a combination. Note: Where possible exposure to direct sun or rain is a factor, to keep your wood doors beautiful, they require periodic resealing or painting dependent on weather or moisture exposure. Do not use dark colored stains or paint on doors exposed to sunlight, as some expansion and contraction of door parts may occur. Further, a dark colored stain or paint can void the door's warranty. Caution: Simpson Door Company cannot evaluate all the available paints and stains, nor the customers' specific application requirements. Your paint dealer should know of suitable finish systems that give satisfactory results in your region. It is highly recommended that top quality finishes be selected, and the application instructions on the container be followed explicitly.

High Exposure Finishing 1. Use an oil-base primer followed by at least three top coats of oil or latex-based paint on the exterior. Latex is more durable and has better color retention. 2. Use a silicone or caulking bead (must be compatible with paint) around the perimeter of each glass pane. This will seal the putty and prevent any moisture from running directly into the door. 3. Ensure all finish coats are allowed to flow into the glass area at least 1/16". 4. Ensure all coatings that go on the surface of the door are also applied to the top and bottom. Coat all six sides of every door, or your warranty will be voided. 5. Silicone the door bottom sweep onto the bottom of the door and apply a surface mount drip cap to the bottom of each door to allow for moisture runoff onto the sill. 6. For outswing units: Prior to finishing the top of the inactive door, be sure to fill the mortise pocket around the flush bolt prep with silicone or caulking. Moisture has a history of pooling up in this area on outswing units. Consider a thin layer of metal across the top of the door to keep moisture from direct contact with the wood. 7. Storm or screen doors may be mandatory to completely eliminate moisture problems. Storm doors must be vented to eliminate temperature build-up. 8. Performance Series® upgrades are recommended for high exposure door openings. Request WaterBarrier® and UltraBlock® technologies from your Simpson retailer to get the most life out of your door.

Paint Finish Specifics 1. “Bridge” finish from face of door to moulding, ensuring there is no gap between moulding and surface of the door. 2. “Bridge” finish as noted above on inside of panel area where moulding meets panel and/or glass. 3. Ensure all moulding miters are well-coated, leaving no gaps.

Jamb-to-Sill Specifics 1. Caulk at sill-to-jamb leg connection. 2. Use corner pads where sill meets jamb. 3. Flood flush bolt hole in sill with caulk or silicone.

Interior Finishing Stain-and-Clear Finish A solvent-borne finish system is recommended for interior doors and may be a lacquer-based system. If a brush application is to be used, it is recommended that a presealer be used prior to staining. For best performance, a minimum of two clear top coats should be used over stains.

Paint Finish Doors should be sealed with a good quality oil-base primer followed by two top coats of a solvent-base or latex enamel.

Fitting and Hanging 1. When hanging door, allow adequate clearance for swelling of door or frame in damp weather. Allow approximately 3/16" clearance for swelling when the door is installed in fully dry conditions. Jambs must be plumb. 2. Do not cut doors down in height by more than 2" (1-1/2" maximum from bottom or 1" on doors with UltraBlock technology, 1/2" maximum from top). Care should be taken in cutting doors down in width to avoid exposing engineered components. Use a sharp fine-tooth saw for trimming ends of doors. 3. Caution must be used to avoid impairing the strength of the door when fitting for locks. Allow at least 1" of wood back of mortise. 4. Use three hinges on doors up to 7' in height and four hinges on doors over 7'. Hinges must be set in a straight line to prevent distortion. 5. Jambs and stops must be set square and plumb. 6. For best performance and to meet the standard Simpson warranty, any exterior door should be installed under an overhang or with sufficient protection. Adequate overhang depends on typical weather conditions of the area where the door is installed, but at the minimum means an overhang projecting a distance from the structure equal to one half the distance between the bottom of the door and the bottom of the overhang (see figure 1).

CARE & fINISHING

2. Water-Borne Advantages: Very flexible, greater ultraviolet resistance, and good exterior durability. Disadvantages: Cannot be applied below 50ºF, long drying period required, and may not fully cure for several weeks. Water-sensitive until cure is complete.

175

7. If an adequate overhang is not feasible, Simpson offers a selection of products warranted for this application, including a five-year limited warranty on doors featuring WaterBarrier ® technology and a ten- and five-year limited warranty on Nantucket® Collection doors. 8. Do not use dark colored stains or paints. 9. Immediately after cutting and fitting (before hanging), seal all cut surfaces and ends of door with an effective quality sealer. See exterior and interior finishing recommendation for complete instructions. 10. Prior to exterior exposure, doors must be finished with complete finish system. 11. To minimize heat loss and save energy, use weather stripping.

Maintenance Your Simpson door's finish will require some simple, periodic maintenance to keep it looking great and provide proper protection against the elements. Regular finish maintenance is also a requirement of the warranty that's included with every Simpson door. Here are some signs to watch for. They indicate that it's time for some simple, easy-to-perform maintenance: • Hairline cracks in the top coat of finish. • Changes in the color of the finish. • Changes in the texture of the finish, such as flaking or scaling.

3. Wash the chalkboard weekly if necessary.

• Dullness or chalkiness in the finish.

4. Look for high grade chalk (95% chalk with a 5% binder), as inferior chalk may permanently mark the chalkboard.

If you live in a severe climate or your entry receives a lot of direct sunlight from a southern or western exposure, you'll want to examine your door's finish often. Depending on the conditions, you may also need to maintain the door finish more frequently. It is important to note that wood has inherent dynamic qualities. Over time, small surface “imperfections” may appear, and the door may shrink or swell slightly as it “breathes” with climate changes. These characteristics are perfectly normal, reflecting the natural aging process of a wood door, and they should not be considered defects. To minimize these occurrences, protect your door with the right finish and an adequate overhang.

Chalkboard Panel Door Care and Finishing Breaking in a new chalkboard door: 1. Remove surface film before starting the “breaking-in” process. 2. Wash the surface daily with cool water for one week. 3. Wash only a small section at a time, immediately rubbing dry with a lint-free cloth. 4. Repeat until the entire surface of the door has been washed. 5. After washing, hold a stick of chalk flat on the board and cover the entire surface. 6. Erase evenly. The chalkboard is now ready to use. care & finishing

Maintenance tips:

176

Handling All doors with resin panels come standard with a protective film that must not be removed until after door finishing is complete and the door is fully installed in its final location. To remove the protective film, peel from a corner edge towards the center of the panel. The protective film should easily pull off from the panel.

Cleaning and Maintenance: 1. Use warm water, mild soap or detergent, and a soft sponge, cloth, or chamois to clean the resin panel. An resin cleaner, such as Novus or Gel-gloss, may also be used. 2. An anti-static guard may be used to minimize accumulation of dust on the panel surface. 3. Do not use glass cleaning products (such as Windex), acetone, gasoline, benzene, lacquer thinner, chlorinated solvents, gritty abrasive scouring compounds, or alkaline cleaners to clean the resin panel as damage to the insert will occur. 4. Do not use a squeegee, scraper, or synthetic rags that may scratch the surface of the panel. 5. Never scrub the resin. Gently wipe surface with a soft, scratchfree cloth.

1. Clean erasers frequently. 2. Use white chalk rather than yellow or colored chalk, as the pigments can make them more difficult to erase.

See page 36. Mill Option: A door made of available softwood, normally either Douglas Fir or Western Hemlock, at the option of the manufacturing facility. Mortise: A square hole or trough cut into a rail or stile meant to receive a tenon for a mortise-and-tenon joint. Mull Cover: A piece of trim used to conceal the joint between two pieces of jamb. Mullion (Mutt): A vertical module used to separate panels. Muntin (Muntin Bar): A short bar, either horizontal or vertical, used to separate individual pieces of glazing material but which does not extend the full width or length of the opening. Nantucket® collection: Simpson Nantucket Collection wood doors are an award-winning combination of historic charm and modern technology. Made to endure demanding climates. See page 26. OVOLO STICKING: Profile on a door component. Simpson's most requested profile and popular for traditional stile and rail doors for decades. Panel, Flat: A solid, laminated, or engineered panel with a flat face. Panel, Raised: A door panel whose face is raised above the edges, which are shaped to fit into grooves in the stiles and rails. Raised panels may be solid, laminated or engineered. glossary of terms

Plantation Louver Door: See Door, Louver. Prefit: The trimming of a door at the factory to fit an exact opening. Primed: A sealing finish applied to a wood door to assist in adherence of the finish paint coat. Rail: A horizontal structural module of a door. Rail, Bottom: The bottom rail of a door. Rail, Intermediate: A rail, other than the top or bottom rail, used to separate panels, or to separate panels from the glazing. Rail, Lock: An intermediate rail, if present, located approximately adjacent to the lock set. Rail, Top: The uppermost rail of a door. Raised Moulding: A decorative profile that extends above the surface of the door that can be either decorative, or can function as a stop for a glass or panel insert. REDI-PRIME ® : Simpson's line of primed interior wood doors. A variety of panel and French designs with a superior surface that is ready to paint. See page 150. RESIN PANELS: Panels made with translucent resins and encapsulated materials. Safety Glass: Glazing materials so constructed, treated or combined with other materials as to minimize the likelihood of cutting or piercing injuries resulting from human contact. Laminated glass, tempered glass, wired glass and safety glass are examples of safety glazing materials used in doors.

Select Grade: Wood products that contain no knots or pitch pockets and have tightly spaced grain, intended to receive a stain or natural finish, free of surface defects that would affect the finish.

Stile: Wooden modules that form the vertical edges of the door; two per door. Stop: A profile used to secure an insert into a door frame or transom sash.

Selects Series: Simpson’s Selects Series combines two popular door designs with nine distinct glass options, making your home look unique, without breaking the bank. See page 82.

Sweep: That portion of the weather-seal attached to the bottom of the door, providing a seal between the door and the sill.

Shaker Sticking: Profile of a door component. Provides a clean design aesthetic for doors.

Transom: An assembly of a wood frame and one or more inserts, designed to be installed above a door or door unit, either in a common frame or in a separate frame.

Sidelight(s): An assembly of stiles, rails, panels and one or multiple glazing module(s). Sidelights are normally designed to occupy a fixed position adjacent to exterior doors, either in a common frame with the door or in a separate frame. Simulated Divided Lites (SDL): Features a single glass unit with bars applied to the glass surface, providing improved performance. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures how well a product blocks heat by sunlight. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat is transmitted. Solid Construction: A method of manufacturing modules or door components from a single piece of raw lumber. Species: A distinct, scientific designation given to identify various living orders. In our case, species refers to the distinct wood species used in our product, such as Douglas Fir or Western Hemlock.

UltraBlock® Technology: A method of door construction that minimizes the natural paths for moisture infiltration in the bottom rail and lower portion of the door stiles and rails, thereby eliminating damage caused by moisture. UltraBlock technology is part of the Performance Series. See page 25. U-Value (U-Factor): The U-value of glass is measured by the number of BTUs that will pass through each square foot area, per degree of temperature difference, from one side of the glass to the other. The lower the U-value, the greater the glass’s resistance to heat flow and the higher the insulating value. V-Groove: A narrow, polished, v-shaped groove cut in one side of a glass or wood panel, usually in a decorative design. Compare to c-groove. Varnish: A clear finish that allows the natural colors and figure of the wood to show through the finish. See finish. Compare to paint. Vertical Grain: Straight, closely-spaced annual growth rings of light and dark wood made by slicing the wood from cants, as opposed to rotary cutting which produces a wavy figure. ViewSaver ® : Simpson’s ViewSaver technology combines a sleek profile bar design with ¾" thick insulated glass for maximum energy efficiency. Warp: Any distortion in the plane of the door itself and its relationship to the frame or jamb in which it is hung. WaterBarrier ® Technology: A Simpson manufacturing process that combines a one-piece Medium Density Overlay (MDO) over the face of a door and PVC beads and bars to create an exterior that resists water infiltration. Perfect for extreme exposures to the elements, WaterBarrier technology is part of the Performance Series. See page 24.

Standard Grade: Wood products that are structurally sound with minor surface defects and discoloration permitted, providing a surface suitable for an opaque (stain or paint) finish.

Wood Composite: A wood-based compound utilizing wood fibers, reconstituted wood or other wood derivatives and binder materials.

Sticking: A profile machined into the edges of stiles, rails, mullions, muntins or bars, adjacent to panels or glazing materials. Simpson's most popular include ovolo sticking and shaker sticking.
