BENEFIT DANCE PARTY ATTRACT 300 About 300 people heeded the call to help the victims of typhoon Sendong that claimed the lives of more than 1,000 and left hundreds of thousands homeless. On 28 January 2012, DISCO DISKORAL, brought on the dance floor of the AMI Netball Centre a mix of young and old, Kiwis and Filipinos, males and females to the biggest Pinoy Dance Party in Auckland that raised funds in support of the TABANG para sa Typhoon Sendong Victims of the Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand (KBNZ), a registered trust. OBG! started the party with Max Surban’s “Diskoral” followed by Hotdog’s “Manila and the disco hit, “Love is in the Air”. New Zealand’s Powerpop girls – KIS showed youth, energy and glam with pulsating numbers that included Pussycat Doll’s “Hush, Hush”, Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” and Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”. The Constellation Band provided almost non-stop the best disco hits that kept the dance floor crowded at all times. Guest choreographer Jam Parado further energised the event with a Zumba number and her fun competition, “Mash-o-Rhythm”. Door prizes courtesy of Western Union were raffled off, while KBNZ gave away $50 each to lucky ticketholders Dodong Arenas and Jimmy Maratas. Pilar Boyle of the Kiwi Pinoy Association commended the organisers for the well-organised activity, while Dr Tony Noblejas of CAPO went forward to the stage to congratulate the Constellation Band for their excellent performance. A good number of partygoers said that they will surely attend a similar event should KBNZ organise one. The primary purpose of DISCO DISKORAL was not lost in the music. During one of the short breaks, a couple handed $20 to the TABANG fund. When the KBNZ finance committee went around for donations, it raised $150 more from kind-hearted individuals. Rosendo ‘Sendo’ Menchavez, KBNZ President, described the effort as “standing ovation”, saying that it was “a GREAT SUCCESS” due to the big turnout. He also thanked the sponsors Edith Carpenter of PLANET EARTH TRAVEL, Rex & Joan Yap of NEW ZEALAND HOME LOAN, Gene Orejana of WESTERN UNION, DR. TONY & CORA NOBLEJAS & Ofel & Jojo Velasco of TINDAHAN PINOY.”

PRESENTING KBNZ The Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand (KBNZ) is the organization of Bisaya-speaking Filipinos living in New Zealand. Though it has not been too long ago (about three years) since it was formally recognized as a Trust, KBNZ under the leadership of Rosendo “Sendo” Menchavez has embarked on projects in the service of its members and the greater community. It regularly holds fellowship activities with the intention of strengthening the bond of friendship and camaraderie among members. It propagates the unique culture of Bisayaspeaking Filipinos through participation in such activities as the Philippine Independence celebrations; and the Sto Nino de Cebu Fiesta where the group’s cultural troupe has performed for the past two consecutive years. In 2010, the group joined the Auckland International Carnival where it won the grand prize for its Sinulog presentation that bested more than 20 other participants from other ethnic groups. KBNZ also engages in community-orientated projects including a beach clean-up and in raising funds to help victims of the recent typhoon Sendong that hit Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities. To pursue its goal of further assimilating into the New Zealand community, KBNZ has organized DISCO DISKORAL dubbed as the Biggest Pinoy Dance Party in Auckland featuring the popular CONSTELLATION BAND, New Zealand’s Powerpop Girls, KIS, and the mix bag music group, OBG! Everyone is invited to join the event, with $20 entrance fee. The income of the activity will be set aside for the various programs of KBNZ in 2012.
