WHO’LL RAISE THE TAHANANG PILIPINO CUP? This may not be the Webb Ellis Cup that the All-Blacks won in the recently concluded Rugby World Cup, but to tribus competing in LingawDuwa2015, the Tahanang Pilipino Cup is the most important award in the Filipino Sporting Event of the Year. Tahanang Pilipino Aotearoa Trust has donated the permanent trophy in lieu of the one lent by the Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand in the past two years. Mel B Libre, organiser of LinsgawDuwa and chairman of Tahanang Pilipino Aotearoa Trust thanked fellow trustees (see photos below) agreeing to sponsor the event and provide the trophy. “I must express my gratitude to them as they fully embraced the aim of the program of promoting the Filipino culture and heritage in New Zealand through indigenous Pinoy games,” said Libre. Engraved in the Cup are the following words: “TAHANANG PILIPINO CUP LingawDuwa”. The names of the winners in the first two editions namely Tribu Irong Kagiron (2013) and Tribu Machong Baboy (2014) are likewise engraved. Like the Ellis Cup, the Tahanang Pilipino Cup will be kept by the winning tribu from the time this is awarded until the next event. The ten tribus competing are: Barangay Putyukan; Tribu Dabarkadz; Tribu Engkantong Bangis; Tribu Gwapo ug Gwapa; Tribu Igot Igot; Tribu Irong Kagiron; Tribu Itoy sa Irong Kagiron; Tribu Kutsero; Tribu Tiking Kwanggol; and Tribu Bakting Kiat. The organisers are calling on everyone (Filipinos and non-Filipinos) to witness the event on November 21, 2015 in Henderson Intermediate School, 70 Lincoln Road, Henderson, Auckland. A colourful parade will kick-off at 8:30am when the ten competing tribus will don their uniforms to be led by their chieftain in thematic attire. The cheering contest should give a rousing start of an expectedly fun-filled day. Participants are encouraged to bring their own food for a picnic-style lunch. For those without baon, Chef Fernando Bautista of Sugbu Foodhouse will set up a food stall, while Chicken Republique will be selling its popular siopao.
