ACFC Hosts OG 2010
Open Gathering (OG), the annual Christmas event organized by TawagAwit, obtained a boost when Fr Ruben Elago and Dicdic del Castillo, leaders of Auckland Catholic Filipinos Chaplaincy (ACFC), gave their full support to this year’s celebration. ACFC will provide the venue, Good Shepherd Parish, Balmoral, and coordinate the participation of lay organizations and its members in the annual event that is now on its fourth outing.

PHOTO HERE, OTHERWISE DELETE BOX You can be a: (1) member; (2) supporter or (3) organizer A member is one who can attend to the regular activities of the Ministry. The minimum participation are: attendance during practice sessions of songs, usually once a week or once every two weeks AND singing with the group during the assigned mass usually once a month or once every two months. A supporter is one who can donate services or resources to the Ministry. There are special events that TawagAwit organizes and the events need finances or helping hands. An organizer is one who initiates the formation of a chapter in a parish. The Ministry will provide all the assistance within its means to help in the vital task.
This year’s program is divided into four parts: Eucharistic celebration (11am); Food sharing (12:30pm) Choir/Group singing (1:30pm); and Entertainment/Gift-giving (3pm). As in past celebrations (above photo shows KBNZ Singers in OG 2009), OG invites new migrants who will be treated to prayers, music, food, games and gifts. Long-time Filipino residents and those who have gained New Zealand citizenry cook their best dishes and donate gifts, while singing groups, music artists and dancers perform to entertain attendees. “What is most miraculous each time we hold OG,” says Bro Mel B Libre, TawagAwit Lead Servant, “is the abundance of food and gifts brought by kind-hearted individuals. It is like we have more than three kings bringing gifts to the baby Jesus, who was like a migrant, a stranger in Bethlehem.” OG will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2010.

TawagAwit-Good Shepherd Parish, Balmoral (South Auckland) chapter led by Bro Estoy/Sis Elvie Duhig made a record of sorts in the TawagAwit ministry by singing in two masses in one Sunday, October 3. The group first sang at the Good Shepherd Parish duringPLACE the Filipino mass at 11:15am, then proceeded PHOTO HERE, to St Benedict Parish, Auckland for the 2:30pm with mostly Filipinos attending the celebration… Two new original compositions were created during the Songwriting Wor(k)ship on October 17 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Glen Eden, Waitakere City. The eight participants formed two groups namely A Surprise Number and The Dead Beats and after more than an hour of inspired sharing completed “I Welcome You to My Table” and “Communion Song” respectively. The program concluded with the performance of the songs…Fifteen members of TawagAwit joined the Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand (KBNZ) in performing “Rosas Pandan” during the Pistang Pilipino sa North Shore show at The Edge in Auckland City on October 23. KBNZ President Sendo Menchavez and wife Claudia led the group in the performance. The presentation was one of the well-applauded numbers during the four-hour program that also featured the talents of candidates in the Miss Philippines –New Zealand pageant…Bro Bert and Sis Rosana Adviento of TawagAwit-St Mary’s Northcote have joined the Mary Fitzwilliam Choir in a congregational recording at St John’s Anglican Church for an episode of Praise Be to be screened on November 7, 8am, TV One…Bro Noel and Sis Gladys Borqueta celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on October 31 at the Tyburn Monastery Chapel in Franklin, Auckland. Fr Ralph Barcelo celebrated the mass, while TawagAwit sang the songs selected purposely for the milestone of the couple. Justine, Jasson and Eric Borqueta joined their parents in welcoming guests who were treated to food and more songs after the mass…TawagAwit-Our Lady Lourdes Glen Eden, led in the singing of Bisaya missal songs during the KBNZ Family Day on October 9 in the Fr David Nolan Auditorium, Takapuna, North Shore City. The group repeated their Bisaya song offerings during the Ethnic Mass in Filipino at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Glen Eden on October 31, 9am. In the latter mass, most of the members wore pink attires to promote Breast Cancer Consciousness. In both masses, Fr Reno Alima, Assistant Parish priest of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, officiated the mass.

millions of Catholic women in the world who inspire their husbands and children to live truly Christian lives. At his weekly general audience Oct. 27, the pope said he wanted to recognize "the many women who, day after day, enlighten their families with their witness of Christian life." "May the Spirit of the Lord raise up holy Christian spouses today to show the world the beauty of marriage lived according to the Gospel values: love, tenderness, mutual help, fruitfulness in generating and educating children, openness and solidarity with the world, and participation in the life of the church," he said. The pope's remarks about women in the church and in family life were part of his main audience address about the life and influence of St. Bridget of Sweden, who lived in the 14th century. Pope Benedict said that St. Bridget, founder of the Brigittine Sisters, had hoped to establish a monastic order with branches for both men and women. Welcoming refugees is an "imperative gesture of human solidarity," the pope said in a message released at the Vatican Oct. 26. "This means that those who are forced to leave their homes or their country will be helped to find a place where they may live in peace and safety, where they may work and take on the rights and duties that exist in the country that welcomes them," he said. The pope made the comments in his message for the 2011 World Day for Migrants and Refugees, which will be celebrated Jan. 16 in most countries. Benedict XVI affirmed that the priesthood is not something of the past, but is needed for the future, as people will always need ministers to bring them to God. The Holy Father noted that "many people nowadays also think that the Catholic priesthood is not a 'job' for the future, but one that belongs more to the past." Yet, he added, "people will always have need of God, even in an age marked by technical mastery of the world and globalization." "Where people no longer perceive God, life grows empty; nothing is ever enough," Benedict XVI observed. He affirmed, "God is alive, and he needs people to serve him and bring him to others." becomes a song when the human person creates his greatest masterpiece: each act of love, from the smallest daily acts to the extreme sacrifice. The Pope made this reflection on October 1 when he was presented with an orchestral and choral concert in Paul VI Hall. Congratulating the National Academy of St. Cecilia's orchestra and choir, the Pontiff proposed a reflection on the role of faith. He drew from the concert's joining of works by Beethoven, Haydn, and a modern composer, Arvo Part. The latter, who was at the concert and personally greeted the Pope, composed a piece on St. Cecilia, which was part of the program. "The text of the saint's martyrdom and the particular style that interprets it in a musical key, seems to represent the place and task of faith in the universe," the Holy Father reflected. "Here life itself becomes a song: an anticipation of this symphony that we will sing together in Paradise." (Zenit.org)
