New Chapter Sings in Otahuhu With the determination to serve God through singing, Sis Angie Tapayan called on Bro Mel B Libre to help in the formation of a music group in St Joseph & St Joachim Church in Otahuhu, Auckland. She said that while there was a growing number of Filipinos in the parish, there was no Filipino music group or choir singing in any of the masses. “How many families can you invite to the proposed group?” asked Bro Mel. “Two, I guess,” responded Sis Angie. The initial set of members met twice to familiarize themselves with the songs.

You can be a: (1) member; (2) supporter or (3) organizer A member is one who can attend to the regular activities of the Ministry. The minimum participation are: attendance during practice sessions of songs, usually once a week or once every two weeks AND singing with the group during the assigned mass usually once a month or once every two months. A supporter is one who can donate services or resources to the Ministry. There are special events that TawagAwit organizes and the events need finances or helping hands. On November 25, 2013, TawagAwit-St Joseph & St Joachim chapter made its debut offering during the 8:00 am mass supported by members from Our Lady of Lourdes chapter. Rev.Fr Ika Kaihea SM, parish priest, was pleased with the group, and asked its members to sing every fourth Sunday of the month. Prior to the conclusion of the mass, Bro Mel sung his original song, “Let us Rise Up”, as churchgoers were asked to donate for the relief and rehabilitation efforts in the Philippines. For its second offering on December 22, the group led the congregation in the 8:00 am mass. Though depleted in number (due to a Christmas party the previous night), it obtained support from Filipino parishioners who occupied the pews behind the members. After the mass, the group came out with the consensus that they needed to campaign for more members within the parish. We therefore invite residents of Otahuhu to join the TawagAwit in their parish. More Notes TawagAwit members supported GigAlive-THANK YOU NEW ZEALAND on November 30. Not only did they join in the formation of the human message, TY NZ, some were actively involved in organising and documenting including Bro Rosendo Menchavez (fundraising), Bro Ferdie Esclamado and Sis Ching Mandawe (production), Sis Debbie Libre (accounting), Bro VictorSis Avis Hebia (food fair) and Bro Cyril Bas (photography). The St Joseph & St Joachim chapter sent the biggest delegation with the Blessed John Paul II, Mount St Mary and St Mark’s chapters duly represented. The activity raised $7,274.10 from ticket sales, garage sale, food fair and donation box...TawagAwit-Our Lady of Lourdes chapter held a simple Christmas gathering on December 22 at the home of Bro Victor-Sis Avis Hebia. The group practiced their songs for the December 25 mass and had shared dinner. Bro Mel gave a message about the cancellation of the annual OG: Open Gathering in favour of GigAlive that raised funds for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. He said that “there are Filipinos in New Zealand who are under tremendous pressure and need our help especially during Christmas, but the events in the Philippines have been more devastating.” He thanked all who helped raise funds, and asked everyone to pray that the aids sent to the Philippines reach those who need these the most…TawagAwit-St More chapter added two more masses to their commitment to the Glen Eden parish by volunteering to sing in the Misa Aginaldo at 6am on December 24 and on the last Sunday Mass (Dec 29) for 2013. Bro Peter Gayaman said that he was encouraged by the initiative and support of members in making the offerings during Advent and Christmas...TawagAwitSt Patrick’s Taupo chapter is singing Filipino Carols prior to the Midnight Mass on December 24. During its general assembly on December 15, the group agreed that by next year they will be learning new songs each month and that voices should be integrated and that groupings will be formulated for alto, soprano, bass and tenor…On October 30, the Blessed John Paul II Catholic Mass Centre observed the Feast Day of Blessed John Paul II (the official patron of TawagAwit). Among the activities were the Mass, the Procession, Shared Meal, the Cultural Program and Games. On the fourth Sunday of Advent (Dec 22), the mass centre had a lantern-making contest using recycled items

POPE FRANCIS IS TIME PERSON OF THE YEAR Pope Francis, who has grabbed headlines for befriending a rabbi, sneaking out to help the homeless, and hanging out with kids, is Time's Person of the Year. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church edged out nine other finalists, including National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden and gay marriage advocate Edith Windsor, for the honor. The pope, who the magazine said has changed the tone of the church since succeeding Pope Benedict earlier this year, was selected this year's POY recipient, given to someone who has the "most impact on our lives, for better or worse."
