Bally is a 165 year old Swiss luxury fashion company founded as “Bally & Co” by Carl Franz Bally and his brother Fritz. Its parent company is JAB Holding Company. Bally has 6 stores in Australia, 85 in Asia, 16 in Europe, 7 in Middle East and 13 in North America. Its flagship store is in London’s New Bond Street designed by the British architect David Chipperfield. It’s a brand that has incredible heritage and is one of the oldest companies to be in continuous trading as well. Bally first entered India in a franchise partnership with Bird Group and had two stores in India. Both these stores have closed in the past three years and the partnership was ended last year. Bally returned to India in joint venture with Reliance Brands Limited and opened its first store at DLF Emporio Mall, New Delhi. Bally is the latest addition to the Reliance Brand’s portfolio. This is the store I have worked on extensively throughout my time at Reliance Brands. The company will now establish a network of stand-alone Bally stores across major Indian cities.

Originating over 40 years ago with the launch of a line of boardshorts, Quiksilver’s essence of creativity, adventure, freedom and being progressive continues to dominate the spirit of the American brand. It is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of surfwear and other boardsportrelated equipment. The company also produces a line of apparel for young women, under the brand Roxy. DC Shoes is another American company that specializes in footwear for action sports. Boardriders is a tri-brand concept store comprising of Quicksilver, Roxy and DC. During my association with Reliance Brands Limited, I worked on de hire and reconstruction of the Boardriders store at Phoenix Market City Mumbai, 3 DC stores; at Ambience Mall - Noida, Inorbit Malad- Mumbai and The Pavilion Mall - Pune. I also designed and executed 12 shop in shop stores across the country. The store interior design, materials and finishes rerflect the progressive and creative spirit of the brand.

Hunkemöller is a clothing manufacturer from the Netherlands, specialising in underclothes and lingerie. The company was founded in 1886 in Amsterdam as a special shop for corsets. Now it is an omni-channel brand in more than 23 countries. Hunkemöller is one of the field leaders in ladies underwear. Creating a world-class retail shopping environment for customers is what the ultimate goal is. That’s why time was initially invested in finalizing the store layout which works best as per site conditions and most suitable for the indian market. As a response to customer needs and design trends, the store design is innovative and provides a multi-sensorial experience to the customer. The store funiture and fixtures are a mix of local and imported materials which is the most cost effective combination, not compromising on the international interior standards of the store. During my association with Reliance Brands, I worked on 2 Hunkemoller stores; at Inorbit Malad - Mumbai and The Pavilion Mall - Pune. I also designed and executed 1 shop in shop store at Central - Hyderabad.

Muji is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods. Muji is distinguished by its design minimalism, emphasis on recycling, packaging, and “no-brand” policy. There are over 350 international retail outlets of Muji across the globe. For the launch of the brand in India, Muji held its iconic exhibition in each city. These exhibitions even got featured in Elle Decor.
‘What is Muji’ Exhibition:
14 iconic brand products were displayed in the atrium spces of Palladium - Mumabi, VR Mall - Bangalore and Select City Walk - New Delhi. The Exhibition comprised of 14 large display units and suspended lights from the artium ceiling. The exhibition design ties in beautifully with the brand’s fundamental principles of suitable raw materials and streamlined production . Muji also did a rare showcase of its archival posters by eminent Japanese creatives. When used in isolation, these doubles up as advertisements but together they highlight the minimalistic aesthetic of the brand. A dismantalabe cross structure was designed and executed for display of these posters. Display units made of 18mm thick exterior grade MDF in production stage

The Effect of Heat on Polycarbonate
To start off with, a simple experiment was performed using heat guns and compact discs. The two main factors throughout this study have been heat and polycarbonate, the material from which compact discs are made. The effect of heat on polycarbonate sheets of varying thicknesses was studied. The nature of the material while it melts and the time taken for its melting were noted. The distance to be kept between two polycarbonate sheets so that they fuse together was studied. It was then observed that when two polycarbonate sheets are held in proximity to each other and heat is applied in a unidirectional way using two heat guns simultaneously, they fuse and harden to form one sturdy homogenous piece. A system for research was developed and a catalogue for different experimental results was created. The research was detailed and extensive. Later 2 such sheets of 2mm thickness were kept parallel to each other and in tension. When bent otherwise, the sheets would go back to their original form. But when bent in tension and fused under heat application, the sheets took up the bent form and retained it permanently.

This idea has been taken further and experimented on. Ultimately, a site was selected on the university campus and the design was worked upon keeping in mind the spatial aspects. The experimental process of generative design and material research gave an outcome which is the driving force to this design proposal. This methodology of research has led to a system which has a further scope for development in the field of architecture and design.

Conversation With Crafts Metal Installation International IMIAD Workshop 2015 CEPT University, Ahmedabad Craft Traditions in India
Craft traditions of India, are embedded in layers of social, cultural and political complexities. Intrinsic nature of crafts in India have lent it a distinct identity in the world. Landscape of India is replete with such craft traditions that are still developing. A sense of identity and concept of place have been closely linked with the rich ethnicities of crafts that it possesses. This is well reflected in the interior architecture preferences in India. The craft practices of centuries have resulted in a vast repository of utilitarian, decorative objects and some building crafts. Many building types bear a testimony to the richness of the culture and society through the medium of crafts. Thus the architecture and interiors across India portray the integration of the crafts at multiple levels.
About the Workshop
Modules ready to be used for the installation
While keeping these craft traditions as the forerunners to our design philosophy, the IMIAD Workshop 2015 explores and celebrates the skills of the master crafts-persons. The workshop discusses various tangible and intangible expressions lent to the interior architecture space through the crafts. It emphasises on the importance of ‘making’ by bringing design innovations in crafted objects through collaborative working methods between master craft-people and designers.
The Final Installation
Experimenting with methods of metal folding, dhokra casting, metal beating, embossing and scrap metal reuse, the output achieved could form a wall, ceiling, partition or a piece or art depending on the way it is used. Numerous forms and possibilities could be further explored.

Concept: The Feeling of Flying
The main idea is to translate the different phases of flying into architecture. The concept of a ‘runway’, ‘taking-off ’ and ‘landing’ has been depicted in the design. A continuous ribbon throughout the museum and ramps in each room hold the three distinctly designed spaces together conceptually and architecturally. The ribbon is designed to have constant twists and turns making it a floor, a wall or even a railing in some situations. A Continuity is provided to the circulation and movement of visitors in the museum space by transforming this one ribbon into different interior architectural elements. A

The room is divided into two levels. The ground floor addresses the vision of Turkish Aviation in the past, whereas on the first floor the visitor can have a forecast of Turkish Airforce in the future.

Creating Hidden Elements in the Urban Fabric
Karaköy, the modern name for the ancient Galata, is a commercial neighborhood in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey, located at the northern part of the Golden Horn mouth on the European side of Bosphorus. Karaköy is one of the oldest and most historic districts of the city, and is today an important commercial center and transport hub.
About the Project
Proposed dimensions and combinations of modules
This project seeks to provide the sense of a physical ‘commune’ that can address the sense of temporality experienced in a place like Karaköy. It does this though by proposing a new hybrid between a domestic and a commercial street, set within a design strategy which equally embraces but also indefinitely shatters the typical cliches of modular systems.

The Concept
Focusing on our team’s home countries (Germany and India) and the country of our research (Turkey), we realized that the most common food served on the table is the bread. Every country has got its typical bread. In India it is the ‘roti’, in Germany it is the ‘brezel’ and in Turkey it is the ‘simit’. All these breads have a circular form and are popularly known and served with meals. Whether in a restaurant or at home, with family or with friends, there exists a gesture of sharing the bread in a basket over the table. There is always a constant movement of the bread basket around the table. In our design approach, we have considered ‘serving’ in a scenario of a restaurant. The furniture piece is designed to make the act of serving to the table by the waiter and also sharing with each other on the table easier. The idea is to create a furniture module that could work well for serving at any restaurant. The food mainly focused on is the different breads that are traditionally and very commonly served with every meal in Turkey.

Aakar - A Sculpture Center & Artist Residency Design Dissertation 2013 - 2014 L. S. Raheja School of Architecture, Mumbai The Idea
• To create a vibrant cultural hub bringing together artists, thinkers, creative minds and innovators from across the cultural, academic, public and private sectors in an atmosphere which supports collaboration, opennes and experimentation • To encourage sculptors working at a professional level • To discover and foster young talent • To educate the public and community at large regarding sculptures. The end result would be a world class sculpture facility that will support new ways of thinking, learning and relating to the arts and provide a valuable resource for the city and the international visual arts sector.
EVOLUTION OF FORM
This concept of keeping a focal point to arrive at the form is maintained throughout the design along with the play of levels keeping in mind the natural contours.

Design Concept
Since scluptures are made of a single homogeneous material, the colour palette and material used for the structures is the same so that every aspect of the whole design flows into each other. Just as a sculpture would be incomplete without one of its pieces, the design would be too if any of its aspects were taken away from it. The vertical fins reducing in height go with the form of the building and also make for its boxing protecting the interiors from direct sunlight, wind or rains.

Khandala – An ideal location
This hill station has magnificent natural landscape, green grassy hills, lustrous valleys and lakes. It is the pride of Sahyadri Mountains. It has a pleasant climate, with mild summer and cool winter. In monsoon season when it rains, the surroundings look green and fresh, which allures lots of tourists throughout the year.

The demand for hospital beds in India is expected to be around 2.8 million by 2014. To match the global average of 3 beds per 1000 population from the present 0.7 beds, India needs 100,000 beds each year for the next 20 years. With such a lucrative business in the fray, multiple players across the globe want to chance their luck in this business. One such corporate player (client) purchased a land measuring 13.78 acres in the heart of Mumbai suburbs. Mumbai is not only the commercial capital of India, it also plays a pivotal role in rendering quality patient treatment and care. Bearing this in mind, our client decided to set in motion a 150-bed hospital on the land as annexed, with an expansion in the similar capacity.

the
The construction of the Dance and Music Gurukul at Alibaug reduces the tyre footprint which would otherwise take excessive energy and create pollution if recycled traditionally. The result is a ‘negative carbon footprint’ construction method. Tyre walls which are typically built using tyres that have been tightly packed with dirt are stable, strong and provide good insulation. Another added benefit is that tyre walls are generally wide enough and so they do not require an extensive (or sometimes any) foundation.
