LEARN: Motion Transformation

Learning manual

LEARN: Motion Transformation This is a D.I.Y (do-it-yourself) educational science kit that provides useful knowledge about simple physics. “You'll be amazed to learn realistic concepts of basic physical theory through exciting activities.

How it works? ? Insert two AA(LR6) size batteries in the battery compartment. ? Ensure all wires are connected to the battery terminals and spring connector as stated wiring sequence and connection. ? Bend the spring connector over then insert the exposed shiny conductor part of wire into spring connector and ensure the wire is securely connected to spring connector. ? Turn the switch on and see the bird and bear play on the seesaw. ? If the circuit does not work, you can check the wire and spring connector connection whether it is not well connected or insulated plastic part of the wire you inserted to spring connector.

Science Behind motion transformation: Both bird and bear are like playing on the seesaw. As the bird moves, the bear will also move accordingly. This is because both of them are on the same leverage. Why the rotational power of the motor will cause the bird and the bear to move left and right? This is due to same simple mechanical trick. When you assemble the parts, you can see seesaw panel and gear cap are the key to converting rotational force to left and right motion. And as season panel connects to both the bird and the bear, both of them move accordingly.

Do you know? Difference between Torque and Work Notice that the units for torque and work are basically the same, yet torque and work are two different things. Torque is a force that causes a rotation, which means that it does not actually cause an object to move along a distance. Therefore, torque is not work.

01

Torque is the product of force and distance.

Torque 2 feet

Torque 2lb-ft

2 pound

2lb-ft

1 pound

There is 2lb-ft of torque being applied to the two bolts below.

On a rotating shaft, the work is done by the torque. This is because torque is a force about a circle, and the shaft is a circle. The force is going round and round, and so is the shaft, so if we "unroll" the shaft, we have a force traveling across a linear distance. That's work. On a rotating shaft, the torque is doing the work.

1 feet

There is no torque on the bolt below because the path of force is passing through the bolt’s centre.

On a rotating shaft (like an axle), the torque is doing the work, and the shaft's rotational speed is time-dependent, so shaft power is the product of its rotational speed and its torque. Using arbitrary units, the power formula for a rotating shaft is: Shaft power using arbitrary units.

Quiz 1 . What would happen if we change the arrangement of the gears in the gearbox as shown in fig?

(a) (b) (c) (d)

02

It will require more power to rotate shaft easily It will require less power to rotate shaft easily There will be no change in rotation of shaft Shaft will not rotate

2. What would happen if we change the arrangement of the gears in the gearbox as shown in fig?

(a) (b) (c) (d)

It will require more power to rotate shaft easily It will require less power to rotate shaft easily There will be no change in rotation of shaft Shaft will not rotate

3. Which Gear box assembly transmits more power? a)

c)

b)

d) All them transmits same amount of power.

How to connect: Follow below steps as figure shown. 1• Install the bear (01) on the main panel (03). Match the key hole to the protruding lock of the main panel. Install the bird (02) on the main panel (03). Match the key hole to the protruding lock of the main panel. Insert the lever (06) and cap (07) to the main panel (03).

2• Insert the seesaw panel (04) to the panel support (05).

3• Connect the pre-assembled main panel (03) to the seesaw panel (04) and the panel support (05). (Make sure they are properly locked in position, and both the bird and bear ends are locked in right position of the seesaw panel (04) as figure shown.)

4• Insert the gear cap (08) to the gearbox (09).

04

5• Install the assembled seesaw unit on the box base (13)

6• Install the gearbox (09) on the box base (13) then connect the seesaw unit and the gearbox together. (Make sure they are properly locked at the right position).

7• Install battery compartment (10) on the box base (13).

8• Install ON/OFF switch (11) on the box base (13).

05

9• Install 3 spring connectors (12a, 12b, 12c) on the box base (13). Narrow end down, push the spring as far as it will go.

10• Connect red battery wire to the spring connector (12c) and black battery wire to the spring connector (12a).

11• Connect one wire of the ON/OFF switch to the spring connector (12b) and the other one connect to the spring connector (12c).

12• Connect the gearbox (09) to the spring connects, red wire to the spring connector (12b) and black wire to the spring connector (12a).
