LEARN: Lift and drag forces
Flying Disc
Learning Manual
LEARN: Lift and drag forces This is a D.I.Y (do-it-yourself) educational science kit that provides useful knowledge about simple physics. “You'll be amazed” to learn realistic concepts of basic physical theory through exciting activities.
How it works? ? Insert 2 pc AA size batteries in the battery compartment. ? Ensure all wires are correctly connected to the battery terminals and spring connectors as started wiring sequence and connection. ? Bend the spring terminal over and insert the exposed shiny conductor part of wire into spring terminal. ? Make sure the wire is securely connected to spring terminal. ? Turn on the switch and wait for a few seconds then turn off the switch. You can now see the disc files up in the air. ? If the circuit does not work, you can check the wire and spring terminal whether they are not well connected or the insulated plastic part of the wire has been wrongly inserted to spring terminal.
Science behind concept of flying: The flying disc works using a simple physical principle –Rotary motion. Rotary motion of a rotor creates an upward force to lift the flying disc. Imagine you are about to create a toy which makes use of rotary motion to fly high. To provide the upward force, the motor spins and make the flying disc rotates in fast speed. The fast rotating flying disc then pushes air downward. And the effect of the opposite reaction force result in an upward force which lift the flying disc. In this way the fast rotating disc can fly high.

Do you know?
Lone Solider: We all know the story about the incident at Roswell Roswell New Mexico. A flying "saucer" crashes in aranchers field, the RAAF(Roswell Army Air force) are quickly dispatched to the scene, recovering the craft and its contents, and covering it up with a weather balloon story. It is commonly theorized that whatever crashed there that day was an alien space craft, and bodies recovered. However, certain events in history seem to suggest otherwise. What if the craft that crashed wasn't extraterrestrial in nature, what if the crashed saucer was actually German in nature? This first disc is named Vril 1. After prolonged testing, the craft was a failure, they couldn't control the craft properly, and more research was started on an efficient control system. The way the craft works is by rotating high powered electromagnets to distort gravity, creating an anti gravity field round the craft thereby negating gravitational forces on earth, helping it to stay up.
Quiz 1. What would happen if when we change the polarity of the batter? a) Flying disc will not b) Lift the flying disc when switch is on c) Lift the running flying disc when switch is off d) There will be no effect on the flying disc 2. If we change the polarity of the batteries what would be the outcome? a) Flying disc rotates in opposite direction. b) Flying disc do not rotates c) There is no effect in the direction of rotation. 3. Do you think lifting the flying disc depends on their shape and design? a) Yes b) No 4. What would happen if we remove the fan of flying disc? a) Flying disc will not rotates b) Flying disc will not lift upward after switch off c) Flying disc will lift upward after switch off d) There will be no effect on the flying disc rotation

Additional DIY Principle of flight: Measurement Standard: Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements. Objectives:
Students will record measurements, look for a pattern in own flight, compare flights and discuss variables
Materials: i. Measuring devices (tape measure, meter stick etc.) ii. Orange cone or something to mark a starting point iii. Paper plates – the cheaper the better iv. Masking tape v. Scissors vi. Clipboard, paper, and pencils Background: At one time, children used to throw tin pie plates at each other. Being metal objects, a safer disc was needed. Fortunately someone invented a plastic-flying disc that today is called a Frisbee TM. Frisbees TM come in various sizes, generally defined by weight. A lighter disc will travel faster and be more maneuverable than a heavier one. A heavier disc, however, will be more stable, and travel farther than a lighter one. They come in all different colors and sizes Procedure: Step 1: Discuss the information given in the first three paragraphs of Background. Step 2: Discuss different ways to measure distance i.e., meters, yards, feet, or counting off using their feet, etc. Step 3: Discuss factors that can affect the flight of a FrisbeeŽ (wind, weight, etc.). Activities:

Students can create a flying disc by following these steps: Step 1: Give each student a stack of 4-5 paper plates. Step 2: Take one plate off the stack and set it aside.
Step 4: Put the first plate back on the bottom. Step 5: Using masking tape, tape around the edges to hold all the plates together. Step 6: After a demonstration, every student should gently try to fly their disc in the classroom before moving to a larger area. How to connect : Follow the below steps as figure shown.
1• Install motor module (01) on the box base (02).
2• Install battery compartment (03) on the box base (02).
04
3• Install ON/OFF switch (04) on the box base (02).
4• Install 3 spring connectors (5a, 5b, 5c) on the box base. Narrowend down, push the spring as far as it will go.
5• Connect red battery wire to the spring connector (5c) and black battery wire to the spring connector (5a).
6• Connect one wire of the ON/OFF switch (04) to the spring connector (5b) and the other one connect to the spring connector (5c).
05
7• Insert the Flying Disc (06) to the shaft of the motor module.
8• Connect the black wire of the motor module to (5a) and the red wire to (5b). Now you will see (5a) only connects to black wires, and (5b) and (5c) only connect to red wires.

Warning ! Do not short-circuit the battery terminals and spring connectors, it may cause overheating. Do not lock the motor or other moving parts, it may cause overheating. Do not aim at eyes and face. Do not aim at people and animals. When the motor is on and the fly disc is rotating, do not use anything to touch the flying disc.
