Luck BEE a Lady! Welcome to Las Vegas and the 2012 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow. We are extremely pleased you could join us for what promises to be THE industry conference of the year. The 2012 Conference Committee and the ABF leadership team have worked hard this year to develop an event that promises to offer something for everyone. From the small scale beekeeper to the seasoned professional, this year’s conference boasts a schedule full of outstanding educational sessions and interactive workshops focused on the latest industry news, updates on research projects, and ways to keep our bees healthy and productive. In addition, this year’s tradeshow promises to take your conference experience to new heights with plenty of new products and services tailored to fit your beekeeping needs. In addition, the opportunities to network with fellow beekeepers and industry experts outside of the meeting rooms are vast. You won’t want to miss several special events throughout the week, including the Welcome Reception, the Honey Queen Reception and Quiz Bowl, the 2012 American Honey Show, the Thursday evening social event, which will feature a closer look at beekeeping around the world, and the ABF Annual Banquet. Dave Mendes, ABF President
The setting could not be more perfect for our event, and the facilities at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino are perfect for our meetings, exhibits and activities. Las Vegas continues to build upon its reputation as a vibrant showcase for the extraordinary, including the ABF annual conference. This is the city that offers the grandest hotels, the biggest stars in entertainment, the highest caliber of award-winning chefs and, of course, the brightest lights. Thank you for joining us this week and for your continued support of the beekeeping industry. Enjoy the conference!

Thursday Night Social Activities – Rooms: Tropical and Palma Looking for a little networking time with your fellow beekeepers? Interested in hearing about beekeeping “around the world?” Ready to sit back and enjoy a beekeeping movie? Then we’ve got just the place for you. Please plan to join us on Thursday for a fun, friendly, relaxing evening designed to bring you and your fellow beekeepers closer together. We’ve planned several activities that you are welcome to enjoy at your leisure. Festivities start at 7:00 PM and will conclude around 9:00 PM. Light refreshments will be provided along with a cash bar.
“Vanishing of the Bees:” In Tropical ABCD, we will be showing the “Vanishing of the Bees” movie. “Vanishing of the Bees,” narrated by Ellen Page, discusses the mysterious disappearance of whole colonies from their hives, known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). The film follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes in their search for a possible solution, as they travel across the country and the Pacific Ocean to Europe, Australia and Asia where there are similar occurrences. “Vanishing of the Bees” examines not only the immediate cause and effect of the bees’ disappearance, but also the greater meaning of the future relationship between mankind and mother nature.
Beekeeping Around the World: In Tropical EFGH, we’ve invited a few beekeepers to share their experiences with beekeeping in other countries. These presentations will be fascinating, as you learn difference and similarities with your own experiences.
Roundtable Discussions and Poster Presentations: If you would like to engage in a friendly conversation about beekeeping issues that are concerning you, please join us in the Palma Ballroom for roundtable discussions. This area has been set aside for open, non-structured conversations about any topic you would like to discuss. Here you can visit with other beekeepers and learn from their experiences or share your own experiences in beekeeping.
Poster Presentations: The 2011 Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees scholars will also be in the Palma Ballroom to share poster presentations of their research. You may visit with them, ask questions and get to know them a little better.

Saturday Workshop Descriptions Business Seminars: Presented by Ralph Jones From his 19 years of teaching Farm Business Management, to his 27 years of owning his own farming operation and from years serving as a business consultant, Ralph Jones has compiled a series of best management practices. These practices come from the areas of accounting, business law, economics, education, finance, marketing and management. Ralph will be presenting the following business seminars during the conference: • • • •
Using Excel to Compute Loans and Investments Labor Laws Planning and Goal Setting How to Conduct Successful Meetings
Program for Newsletter Development with Photoshop Demonstration and Utilizing Different Publishers Presented by Tim Tucker Join Tim as he shares tips and tricks for creating a newsletter that grabs your attention and gets you interested in the content. Tim will show you various publishing software and how to make your newsletter stand out from the rest.
Organizing a Kids and Bees Event Presented by Kim Lehman Learn the nuts and bolts of setting up an educational, fun event for the public. Kim will share her experiences over the last 17 years of planning, coordinating, and presenting the annual Kids and Bees event. Learn tips for publicizing events, working with volunteers, activities and tips for working with tots to teens and general logistics for presenting a successful program.
Smart Sleep with Honey Presented by Ron Fessenden Smart Sleep with Honey will detail the benefits of honey as it works to facilitate and promote recovery sleep. Honey consumption before bedtime reduces or eliminates metabolic stress during the night, which not only improves sleep, but reduces the risk for all the metabolic conditions associated with lack of recovery sleep. The reduction or prevention of nocturnal metabolic stress is the primary benefit of consuming honey before bedtime, impacting every system, organ, and tissue in the body. A well-fueled brain during sleep (“Smart Sleep”) means improved health and reductions in the risks of many conditions. This presentation is for anyone wanting to understand the powerful healthful benefits of consuming honey before bedtime. It is for health professionals, as well as lay persons wanting to know how to improve their health with honey.

Fight or Flight: The Struggle to Preserve Residential Beekeeping Panel Facilitated by Nancy Gentry The honey bee has garnered more attention in the last several years than at any other time in recent memory. The result of this media attention has been increased awareness and acceptance of the critical role the honey bee plays in agriculture and the environment. The number of enthusiastic part-time beekeepers also has mushroomed across the nation; a classic cross section of urban and suburban demographics, yet while a neighbor may feel warm and fuzzy about the plight of bees, their general fear of insects cancels out everything, especially in areas inhabited by Africanized honey bees (AHB). One complaint to local officials and every beekeeper in the community may face having to remove their hives. Five panelists (four from the United States, one from Canada) will share their war stories and possible strategies for winning the battle. This workshop will also have a question and answer component.

Saturday Workshop Descriptions Analysis of the Changes to the H-2A Regulations as They Pertain to Beekeepers Presented by Kerry Scott Finding and keeping reliable labor for commercial beekeeping has never been more difficult than it is today. Even the solution, use of the H-2A guest worker visa program, has become increasingly more problematic to use. ABF has worked tirelessly with the US Department of Labor to improve this situation, with mixed results. We continue to work towards improving the way H-2A works for beekeepers. With my presentation, I hope to inform both current and prospective users of the program of the current state of the program as well as our expectations as to changes which will have to be addressed early in 2012 for the 2013 season.
Beekeeping for Prisoners Presented by David Westervelt and Don Hicks David and Don will provide information about the first and only beekeeping program in the Florida prison system. Inmates at RMC are learning how to maintain a colony of honey bees and collect honey, giving them the opportunity to acquire a job upon their release and a tool to become involved in agriculture.
Varroa IPM Presented by Randy Oliver Randy Oliver owns and operates a commercial beekeeping farm in Northern California. He manages about 500+ colonies for migratory pollination and produces queens, nucs, and honey. He has 40 years of practical beekeeping experience, plus holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biological Sciences. Randy researches, analyzes, and digests beekeeping information from all over the world. In this two-part presentation, Randy will provide the following information on Varroa IPM: • • • • • •

2011 American Honey Queen Teresa Bryson Teresa Bryson is the 20-year-old daughter of Tom and Linda Bryson of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. She is a senior at Hagerstown Community College, double majoring in English and Forensic Science. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the Dean’s List the last two years. A 4-H member for 10 years, she serves as a leader for two clubs. Teresa has been keeping bees for four years, and manages six hives in her family’s apiary. In her free time, she enjoys reading, sewing, writing, cooking, and caring for the many animals on her family’s small farm. “At the beginning of my year as the 2011 American Honey Queen, I set a goal to speak to at least 12 legislators about the current decline of honey bees and the need of a standard of identity for honey. With your help I was able to speak to over 120 legislators in eight different states, including addressing the Mississippi House of Representatives. This year, I also spoke to students across the country about the importance of honey bees and pollination to their daily lives. I spoke to nearly 9,000 students in over 20 different states.” “As my year comes to an end, I want to thank you all for the support you have given to me and to the American Honey Queen Program. Through your support, I visited 27 different states this year and reached over six million people. This experience has changed me in so many ways and has helped me to grown as a person, and I owe all of that to you. Please continue to show the support you showed me this year to the future American Honey Queen and Princess and help to make this program as successful as it can be!”
2011 American Honey Princess Allison Adams Allison Adams is the 20-year-old daughter of Ned and Caryl Adams of Plano, Texas. She currently teaches art to elementary and high school students. A beekeeper for six years, Allison also enjoys cooking and baking, drawing, sustainable agriculture, playing traditional folk music, and spending time with her family. “The beekeeping industry affects the welfare of our very nation and touches every person in every place. It is imperative that the American people understand the value of honey bees, their products, and their vital service as pollinators if the beekeeping industry is to continue. It has been my hope to inspire a passion and appreciation for honey bees and beekeeping, as I have communicated this message to thousands of people in 16 states this year! Learning how to take pieces of information and make them relevant to any audience – whether youth or adults, at a booth, on a stage, or in media interviews – and constantly interacting with the public are some of the valuable experiences I am most grateful to have had. Giving more than 140 presentations has renewed my own enthusiasm for education, which will be immensely beneficial as I continue teaching throughout my life.” “I am deeply grateful to you all for this incredible opportunity to serve as “a voice of the beekeepers” and for your assistance in arranging these promotions. I encourage you to extend our reach next year by developing a promotion, big or small, for the American Honey Queen or Princess to promote our industry in your area. It is because of your support that we have been able to reach countless people this year – the American Honey Queen Program is here for you!”

Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees 2011 Scholars Four young scientists studying apiculture will attend the 2012 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow and present their research, thanks to scholarships awarded by the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees. The $2,000 awards will enable the graduate students to meet other honey bee researchers and the people in the industry they hope to serve.
Marcelo Nicolás Agra National Institute of Agriculture Technology, Argentina Marcelo Nicolás Agra is a doctoral student at the National Institute of Agriculture Technology working under the supervision of Dr. Maria Alejandra Palacio. His research has three objectives. The first is to characterize the molecular genetics of bee populations where African and European bees coexist. His second objective is to look for molecular markers for hygienic behavior and varroa tolerance. His third objective is to compare ProApi germplasm maintained in both closed and naturally mated populations. He began his studies in 2009 and much of his research is ongoing.
Cristina Botías Laboratory of Bee Pathology, Guadalajara, Spain Cristina Botías is a Ph.D. student studying bee pathology under the supervision of Dr. Marino Higes at the Bee Pathology Department of the Regional Apicultural Centre (Guadalajara-Spain). Her work focuses on the microsporidium Nosema cerenae, both at the individual and colony level. Her research includes both basic pathological studies and evaluating three new drugs for treating Noema: Nosestat®; Phenyl Salicylate; and VitaFeed Gold®. She is currently writing her dissertation, and she has authored or co-authored 10 scientific publications.
Michael Smith Cornell University, United States Michael Smith is a Ph.D. student at Cornell University working under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Seeley. He began his Ph.D. studies in August 2011. He completed his M.S. studies at Princeton studying molecular biology. While a M.S. student, he became fascinated with honey bees and organized a beekeeping club at Princeton. He is currently conducting behavioral experiments on honey bees, and his research will focus on developing a better understanding of robbing behavior. His research will provide valuable insight into a little-studied behavior of honey bees that has great practical importance to beekeepers.
Johan van den Heever University of Alberta, Canada Johan van den Heever is a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta working under the supervision of Drs. Jonathan Curtis and Steve Pernal. He has a strong background in analytical and organic chemistry, and his research addresses both the synthesis and efficacy evaluation of new compounds for the treatment of Nosema, as well as the detection of metabolites in honey following treatment. He has completed his coursework and candidacy exams and will soon be seeking a research position. Although still a student, he has authored or co-authored eight scientific publications on drug synthesis and metabolism.
The scholarships are funded by donations the Foundation receives from the industry. For more information on the Foundation, visit www.honeybeepreserveration.org.
