Sharing inspiring MP experiences
Greetings from MP North America Human Resources Newsletter – October 2019
Sharing inspiring MP experiences Can you share with us your experience in the FTI Group and MPNA? I originally joined the FTI Group in 1996. Back then, the US company was called CA USA which was subsequently changed to FTI North America. I joined as Product Manager, and a year later became Product Director. I looked after the contracting and product planning throughout the US, Canada, Hawaii and Alaska. It was an exciting time as it corresponded with rapid growth of the FIT Group. It was also a different world: we communicated by internal email and fax. The internet was an interesting oddity, but not viewed as a serious threat (little did we know). We used Excel to calculate rates and send them to clients. My first laptop was the size of a small suitcase! I left in 2000, shortly after the company was sold. It felt like the end of an era and a good time to seek a new challenge. Within 18 months, 2 events changed our business forever. The attacks of September 11th left hotels desperate to fill rooms which gave a huge boost to a new form of distribution, the OTA. And the internet became a feature of our daily lives, bringing price transparency, user reviews, price guarantees and self-service packaging into our business. Over the next 19 years, I kept in good contact with friends and colleagues from FTI. I followed their fortunes closely and was delighted when I could join the company again. I also watched the Meeting Point strategy unfold, and especially the exciting development of Meeting Point Hotels. So when I was approached at the end of last year to re-join MPNA as CEO it felt a little like returning home. Of course, in many respects, the company is unrecognizable from the one I left 20 years ago, but I was very pleased to see some familiar faces when I walked in the office. I’ve been back from 9 months and it has been both a challenge and a pleasure. How would you define your MPNA experience in one word? And why? I’m going to cheat and pick 2 because they go together. ‘Challenging’, because we have to adapt our ‘traditional’ business model and processes to succeed in a rapidly changing business environment; and ‘Rewarding’ because I see progress towards our goals.
Adam Rogers CEO MP North America
Human Resources Newsletter – October 2019
Sharing inspiring MP experiences Considering current market trends, which do you consider the biggest challenges and opportunities for MPNA in 2020? The most important challenge is for MPNA to reach the goals set by the company. The biggest internal challenge is our quest for a new system. The main external challenge is maintaining our value-proposition to our clients and suppliers: the ‘wholesale’ model needs as it is under attack at the moment and we have to defend and believe in its future. MPNA’s biggest opportunity is with dynamic/connected hotel product. This is the fastest growing segment of our business in North America and we are fortunate to have local experts in our team to at least double the business in 2020. I also feel that our expertise can help the rest of the group grow. Can you share the most inspiring employee success story you have experience in MPNA? One of the best things about my job is seeing employees grow and succeed – both professionally and personally. When I re-joined the company. I was delighted to see that AJ Alkhammal was not only still with MPNA, but was the Manager of Coach Tours and Special Groups. AJ joined the company back in 1997 in Reservations and has worked his way upwards to become a valued member of the Senior Team and very popular co-worker. He is also the proud father of 4 children.
Additional comments…or something else you would like to share… Sometimes, people are overly impressed by what is shiny and new. And this is true in our business. But don’t forget that this is still a ‘people’ business. People prefer to work with people they like and respect. Relationships are still key. And the day relationships no longer matter is the day I retire! Adam Rogers CEO MP North America
