According to the most recent index published by the Sidneybased Institute for Economics and Peace (2018), Panama is one of the five safest countries of the Americas. A host of commercial establishments open 24/7 are a proof of this. Although the thunderstorms of its rainy season (May-December) can be quite intense, the country is rarely affected by hurricanes, as it is located below parallel 10. Likewise, major earthquakes on the Isthmus are a rather uncommon phenomenon.
