Shot deconstruction of: The Worst - Jhene Aiko

The red lights

flashing on

her connote danger. The black on the right of the screen is almost a warning that darkness is going to follow. This shot subverts the typical representation of women as she isn’t being presented as a victim. She is on her own in this shot and throughout the whole video, connoting indepdence.

This shot conforms to the male gaze theory as Jhene is sexualised. Her white dressing gown has an angelic connotation, however the dark bra underneath has an evil connotation, suggesting there are two sides to every woman. The mid-shot presents her as equal to the viewers. She is drinking wed wine, possibly to drown her sorrows, or possibly to celebrate?

The disorientation of this shot depicts Jhenes mental state and emotions at this point of the video. The shot is blue, connoting her current emotions as blue is a representation of sadness. I believe it also represents that she is there physically but not mentally; as if her head is up in the clouds. This shot is in between a mid shot and a close up. It is close enough for the viewers to see Jhenes facial expression.

This shot supports the stereotype of women being materialistic. After killing her significant other, she is looking at diamonds instead of grieving. However, this subverts from the stereotype of women being highly emotional, as clearly she doesn’t care. Her red nails once again connote danger and anger.

This shot is one of the final

shots of Jhene, here she is surrendering. This conforms to the stereotype of women being weak. The only light in the shot comes from inside the house, implying that only bad things are to follow for her. Or maybe it could connote that she has left her angelic self behind. Once again, a mid-shot is used. This is the main shot that is used throughout the video, implying that throughout the video she remains equal to the viewers, women in particular.

This shot of Jhene making food conforms to the feminine mystique theory. Despite her just killing her partner, she is in the kitchen making food which informs that women are programmed to cook and be housewives. However, this also conforms to the traditional stereotype of women being erratic and mentally unstable because after killing someone it would be unusual to make a sandwich. The close up in this shot is used to highlight the fact that Jhene is clearly troubled.

This shot is

upside down, possibly a connotation of her life turning upside down? It could also be a representation of her emotions and mental state. The background is out of focus, implying that her head is no longer focused on the real world, she is fading.
