INFORMATION PACKET
MiEH 2016 PENANG TAKEOVER
WHY? To ensure the awareness of mental health issue is raised in the community and they understand that such occurrences are happening and not something to be taken lightly of as well as to let the public know that help is nearby and easily available.
WHERE? Several public locations around Penang.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? Focusing on 5 most common mental disorders according to WHO; Depression, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, dementia and autism we would try to create awareness regarding the conditions in people around us. We will be planning a simple social experiment; asking passer-by to draw what they think the brain of an autistic child or people with depression would look like. Each group would be given a certain period of time to go around and engage with the public and to get as many drawings as they can. Specific details regarding other social experiments and rollout of the activities would be briefed on Day 1 of MiEH.
WHAT SHOULD YOU PREPARE? Adequate knowledge regarding the 5 most common mental disorder. Preparation of talking points to engage with the public based on the perspective of your course.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BE EXPECTING? Marks allocation based on groups for the poster preparation, engagement of the public as well as social media exposure from the public. Curious passer by regarding the topics we are highlighting for the roadshow

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT
WHY? Exposure of our participants and committee towards the minorities of society; to erase stigma piece by piece and also to learn how we are interdependent not a one sided idea of us helping them, these smaller groups of the community might teach us more than what we know.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING? You get to choose one out of the few focuses that we have for Community Engagement Projects as it will all be conducted simultaneously. The selection of the projects will be conducted after briefing on the first day.
ST NICHOLAS HOME FOR THE BLIND
Orientation and Mobility classes will be held where the teachers will advise you regarding the proper manner of aiding the blind either to cross the road or to climb a flight of stairs. Sessions regarding recognition of pills and medication by touch would be conducted to ease dispensing and describing medication to future patients who have lost their sight. Learning of basic braille conducted by the students in the centre.
COMMUNITY AIDS SERVICE PENANG
Sharing sessions and engagement with the patients in the centre. Basic gardening with the patients of the centre. Getting to know the patients on a deeper level and understand the stigma faced by these patients. Interactive activities and simple games between you and the AIDS patients.
JELUTONG COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMME A bigger scale outreach programme targeting communities living in Jelutong. Basic examinations such as glucose test, cholesterol, high blood pressure, BMI, physical examinations will be done. Specific engagement with individuals who are diabetic such as proper management of diabetes or it’s wound as well as proper usage of the insulin pen. Engagement of the children towards proper oral hygiene and the adults for proper physical exercises. You will be divided into smaller groups which would be a combination of different professions and learn usual outreach activities that some other profession are used to carrying out.
WHAT SHOULD YOU PREPARE? ST NICHOLAS HOME FOR THE BLIND Willingness to engage with the students and teachers at the centre. Understanding of the condition of the people with visual impairment, that their skills would be far greater and better than what we are able to do.
COMMUNITY AIDS SERVICE PENANG Be prepared and go there with an open mind, and understand that the patients in the centre needs attention and contact with people and should not be in isolation. Have fun and engage with the patients as they are a welcoming bunch.
JELUTONG COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMME Basic and adequate knowledge regarding the physical examinations that will be conducted. Engagement with the community in Jelutong and help raise awareness towards maintenance of their health.
UPCLOSE AND PERSONAL
WHY? Intellectual exchange and enhancement by our prestigious speakers as well as to allow students to exchange ideas and motivations.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? There will be a total of 5 sessions with 3 talks going on simultaneously in which you get to choose one of the three to attend. The titles as well as the list of speakers and their time slot will be provided when you are here. A forum will be conducted at the end of the day whereby attendance from everyone is required. Not only will you be listening to talks, there will be dedicated sessions for delegates’ sharing in which you would be able to share your experience, motivations, and inspirations in your path towards becoming a healthcare professional. All ideals are welcomed even if it is just a simple sharing on your thoughts and perception regarding the field.
AMAZING RACE
WHY? There is no whys to an amazing race around town except to just go crazy and have some fun!
WHERE? In the amazing town of Penang Island, Georgetown.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? Well, everyone should know the rules for an Amazing Race right? You would be finding clues and locating stations around Georgetown completing its challenges in order to emerge as the first group to reach the finishing line!’ However there is a twist in the regular guidelines, this time; each station would have three flags to identify the top three teams that complete the task to perfection. Within the time of the Amazing Race, you can choose to return to previously challenged station and rechallenge the task, just to kick some other team’s flag of the board; just for the fun of it! Marks will be allocated based on challenge you completed as well as the difficulty of the task and the number of flags your team managed to place on the board.
GALA NIGHT
THEME This year’s theme would be ‘ALL ABOARD THE ORIENT EXPRESS’ so do come in your best dress and suit that would capture the attention of everyone present in the room.
PACKING LIST
DRESS CODE Smart casual for the entire duration of the event. If you would be wearing pants or jeans; ensure that they are long ones. If you would be bringing skirts; bring those of moderate length of at least knee length would be
great. Covered and comfortable shoes. There will be days where you would be requested to wear the shirt of the event which we will announce when you are here. Sports’ wear or anything comfortable that allows you to move from one station to another with ease. During amazing race, shorts are allowed. One last thing in the list; A nice dress or suit for Gala Night!
