KITCHEN & BATH DESIGN This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchens and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions.

PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES II In this course, surface textures, reflections, and apparent volume of space are represented through exercises with mixed media and various rendering techniques including computer software applications. Students interpret actual materials and finishes to efficiently and effectively represent them within floor plans, sketches, details, and interior perspectives. Accuracy in applying the properties of color balance and distribution are factors that contribute to successful solutions.

HISTORY OF DESIGN III This studio presents an in-depth study of architecture and furniture developments of several major non-western cultures. Religious, philosophical, and social beliefs and customs are emphasized while construction methods, building materials, motifs, fabrics, and decorative arts are explored. Students work within teams to present their research on Middle Eastern, Asian, African, Mesoamerican, and North American cultures. Projects include development of furniture and accessory designs created through the fusion of world styles.

INTERIOR DESIGN INTERNSHIP Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under supervision of a qualified mentor.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and suitability.

ADVANCED RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This senior elective studio covers the total process of residential design from concept development through two- and three-dimensional presentations. Building codes, covenants, and restrictions create the guidelines for solutions; while knowledge of sustainable practices, residential business practice, construction methods, materials, and custom interior architectural details are applied.

COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENTS In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior reflects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research, programming, preliminary design, design development, and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, wayfinding techniques, and specifying corporate furniture, finishes, and materials. Custom interior architectural details are applied.

BREAKOUT COMPETITION In this ASID Illinois Chapter and ILIS Design Alliance event, the participants are challenged to complete an entire project within seven hours. The competition tests the following skills: prioritizing, creating innovative ideas for competitive markets, time management, schematics, communicating ideas, and presentation techniques.

THESIS I In these senior-level courses, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instructor approval.

THESIS II Students develop a viable and visual solution for the project typically researched in Thesis I. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.

SON RESIDENCE

Located

in Chicago’s South Loop, this building was a former manufacturing facility during the 1970s. It served many purposes over the years, and is now being renovated and converted into loft apartments. The neighborhood is transitioning into a trendy, modern residential area with emphasis on the arts. The client, Ms. Taylor, is a freelance photographer that works from home. This loft incorporates her lifestyle with an area to display her portfolio work, an area for indoor plants, a reception area, a dark room with storage, a graphic workstation, and a kitchen equipped for entertaining. A flexible studio space is located next to double height windows with southern exposure. The main theme of this loft’s design is adaptive reuse. The wood floors are refurbished and stained with a rich espresso color. Original exposed brick is repainted to a light white to create contrast and give a neutral background for the space. Large draperies allow for daylight to be used or blocked for shootings. A large curtain wall reaching two stories allows for natural light to pour in. From any location in the space, one can admire a city view. The use of no VOC paints, energy saving appliances, and a living plant wall add to the sustainability of the space.

Architectural details stand out and enhance the beauty of the building’s past. Simplistic living and style give this apartment an updated feel. Ms. Taylor is able to work efficiently and comfortably live in her new home.

A top view of the first floor displays shared open spaces. These all have their own specific uses. The entrance serves as a green space with a living foliage wall and many potted plants. This brings the outdoors in, as well as helping with indoor air quality. A full kitchen with a large island provides equipment and seating for entertaining. Adjacent to the kitchen is a living area with dramatic lighting. This is provided from a formal chandelier, as well as internal lighting from a large entertainment center. Custom seating around a column serves as a reception waiting area or can be used for extra seating for the living room space. A large two-story curtain wall separates the photo studio, while still letting in natural light. The studio is open to accommodate many different kinds of photo shoots. Behind the studio is a large dark room for the resident to store her equipment and develop photos.

This

studio’s intent is to design a therapy & music space that helps create a healing environment to better the lives of children with mental disabilities. The studio would serve the Chicago Northwest suburbs as an outpatient facility. The design process heavily uses evidence-based design. Thesis I’s research for programming and schematics is used during Thesis II’s implication for design. Media: Autodesk Revit/AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, & Hand Sketch Note: Full set available upon request. All scales represent original scale.

Mission The mission of Blackbird Music Therapy Studio facility is to give children with mental disorders a chance to explore different avenues of therapy for growth and knowledge. Our goals provide children therapeutic alternatives, along with traditional therapy, to help accelerate learning, healing, and independence. We value individual and group therapy, musical expression, self-growth, respect for all, and communication for all those who participate in this educational, collaborative program.

Guiding Principles • STRESS RELIEF is achieved with views to nature and a soothing color palette. • SUSTAINABLE DESIGN is achieved with contributing to LEED Certification, linking to the Millennium Goal Target 7.A, maximized day lighting, and providing appropriate acoustical comfort. • WAYFINDING PRINCIPLES are achieved with color zones, flooring changes, and grouped lighting elements. • ALTERNATIVE THERAPY is achieved with cognitive behavioral, musical, and multi-sensory solutions. • ENHANCED EXPRESSION is achieved through resource centers, educational classes, and family workshops.

EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN

An

analogous color palette is recommended to avoid overstimulation and create a

soothing environment. A custom Chicago skyline design and fiber-optic lights are used for multi-sensory space and create a positive learning distraction. Fabrics are carefully selected based on meeting local and federal codes and durability. Recycled content found in material selections, acoustic ceiling tiles, and maximized daylight plans help contribute towards LEED Certification. Preliminary sketches, bubbles, and 3-D studies help with room locations and custom features. Privacy features meeting HIPPA requirements are taken into account, along with safety precautions.

Repeated curved lines from the furniture selection and walls create a sense of rhythm. A variety between natural textures and sophisticated patterns creates a healing space for all ages to enjoy. Efficient use of space, easy maintenance, and sustainable design are the main concepts in this space. The office is functional and safe for all user groups. With fully ADA compliant traffic flow, people feel comfortable with the position of public and private rooms. Energy-efficient appliances, maximized views, low-wattage fixtures, and daylight sensors help save energy. The space uses furnishings and materials that contribute towards LEED Certification. Brussels’

Infinity Lounge is inspired by the potent combination of color and science-two hallmarks of its owner Pantone, one of the world’s leading authorities on color systems. The adjoining Pantone hotel- a nontraditional outreach effort- uses largely white backgrounds to showcase the company’s highly saturated colors, vividly demonstrating color’s possibilities and branding to guests. In contrast, Infinity is predominately a dark space, in which color is perceived through elements at its disposal to arouse the senses. For example, it offers a stunning 360-degree view of the city’s skyline, while employing even its food to highlight color. The unity of monochromatic finishes, materials, and furniture make the tapas menu items pop. Lighting elements and illuminated furniture cubes add a playful ambiance to the lounge. Its appreciation for science is inspired by the Atomium, an iconic building erected for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Symbolizing the middle of an atom, the custom LED light installation over the lounge area gives one the feeling of being one with the stars. Repetition of curves in the bar, space shaping, furniture pieces, and lights connect to one another. An endless skyline, atomic features, and monochromatic elements bring out color in the one-of-a-kind experience that could only be Infinity.
