I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought, there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you. - FRIDA KAHLO

PROFILE (2008) Oil on linen, 42”x28”
Alyssa Monks Alyssa’s paintings can be interpreted as narrative figuration – something that people understand as work with a theme relating to situations from every day life. Alyssa depicts a scene that one experiences in the shower. Surrounded by distorting glass, steam and flowing water, her models portray a tension with reality, inviting the viewers to feel his or her own humanness.

L.A. based artist and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena graduate transforms her friends into hookers depicts them in various imaginary situations. She is “inspired by light, color, punk rock music, hot chicks and sparkles” and her fascination with prostitutes (which she defines as “someone who sells their talents and abilities for money”) is evident in her work. Natalia is a perfectionist who spends hours on the smallest details of her massive canvasses. Her favorite artist is Toulouse-Lautrec who she believes can “draw like a motherfucker.” Natalia also makes apparel, jewelry, and other accessories that are available on her website.

Diego Gravinese
Diego Gravinese
Diego Gravinese The photorealist paintings of Argentinian artist Diego Gravinese capture the personal moments of his subject’s lives. A relatively candid manner is portrayed as his models do not appear to be posed or much aware of the camera and it’s harsh flash. In his body of work one finds women in various stages of their lives - they interact with one another, they dress, undress, put on make up, and smoke. In some work the artist juxtaposes realistic pieces with ones that are abstract, or covered in a colored overlay - possibly conveying lapses in time. These elements combined could suggest that Gravinese paints around a rites-ofpassage or coming-of-age theme.

New York-based artist and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) graduate Leah Tinari paints the 35mm photographs she has taken of her family and friends – the ones that she “suspects most people will rip up or erase.” Often times she will take different elements from more than one photograph to create a better composition. Unifying her portraits are highly saturated colors and a caricature style. In her artist statement she discloses that her work is “a celebration of life – a wonderful and vital dialog between people and art, and between art and life.” Influences include Egon Schiele, David Hockney, and Elizabeth Peyton.

I started “collecting” art by saving things I liked in a folder on my desktop. Not long after I decided that I wanted to learn more about the art scene and keep track of artists that I felt inspired by. Tumblr seemed like the best way to do this because it motivated me to constantly look for new artists - it also exposed me to a million new resources to find them. Being able to share my tastes with those that followed or liked was an awesome bonus. I decided to make this “magazine” for a couple of reasons. It started with my being tired of being bored, then became an opportunity for me to learn more about some of the artists that I’ve found over the last couple of months, as well to use Adobe InDesign for the first time (something I’ve always wanted to do but was always without reason). I hope you enjoyed my little project as much as I did, and I thank you for being here!
