PROJECT BRIEF This project was all about representing a story and creating something with great meaning. We used the iconic albums made by The Beatles to gain this skill. Our challenge was to creat a storng conceptual package design for one of their albums. This included a cover, spine, back cover and interior. Through lots of research, concept exploration and design exploration this project was possible.
RESEARCH Revolver (1966)
1960s
- one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order - Fall or relaxation of social taboos (especially racism and sexism) -Era of “all hits” in music - The Beatles exerted an enormous influence on young men's fashions and hairstyles in the 1960s that included most notably the mop-top haircut, the Beatle boots and the Nehru jacket.

Redefined the parameters of popular music Diverse influences and sounds “A radical new phase in the group’s recording career” Start of the band’s psychedelic period (mind-altering drugs) The album was decisively informed by acid Made while experimenting with LSD Experiences made the members develop a fascination for Eastern spiritual and philosophical concepts McCartney didn’t partake in LSD, he drew his inspiration from the intellectual stimulation he experienced in London’s varied artistic community Midpoint between the dominance of Lennon and McCartney Harrison’s interest in Indian culture and music inspired his writing First time the Beatles deliberately incorporated the studio into the recordings being made Used automatic double tracking Eagerness to experiment Influenced a diversity of music genres (electronica, punk rock and world music) Pressure to complete the album before European tour "A revolutionary record" "It seems now that we will view this album in retrospect as a key work in the development of rock and roll into an artistic pursuit...” Greater experimentation in the studio (new sounds and new ideas) Harrison introduced as a composer Backwards music Beatles wished to continue to highlight their individual strengths on its follow-up, and they did by listing each song's lead singer on the record sleeve “Make sounds different rather than real” (sounds were images)
During 1966
Innovations in technology (varispeeding, reversed tapes, close audio miking and automatic double tracking) Rumors were spreading that the band was breaking up (last concert) “Bigger than Jesus” debacle (JohnLennon)

Additional facts
-Of the songs recorded for Revolver, John Lennon's "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the first written and the most elaborately recorded. This would also be the first real use of the automatic double-tracking technique to achieve Lennon's eerie, howling mountaintop vocals. Before, artists had to sing the same vocal take twice to get that sound. - The 35-minute, 14-track Revolver took the Beatles 300 hours of studio time to complete. They only spent 150 hours on Rubber Soul -First truly psychedelic album
- "Eleanor Rigby" features lyrical contributions from all four Beatles, which was very rare -"Doctor Robert" was based on Dr. Robert Freymann, who was a notorious rock doctor to the stars, getting only the best for his patients in the industry -"Here, There and Everywhere" was meant to be a reply to the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." Both bands were in a friendly creative rivalry in the mid-'60s, with Pet Sounds influencing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the next year. - A dentist introduced The Beatles to LSD by secretly slipping it into their coffees.

CONCLUSION This project was very different from other projects in the past. It challenged me to really think conceptually and make sure every mark I made had meaning. Also, creating something new that was originally from a different time period was a challenge as well. Overall, I enjoyed creating album packaging as well as a release poster to compliment it. I liked creating something that hard deep meaning to it rather than something that just looked pretty.
When your bird is broken, Will it bring you down, You may be awoken, I’ll be ‘round, I’ll be ‘round. You tell me that you’ve heard ev’ry sound there is And your bird can sing, But you can’t hear me, You can’t hear me! For No One (Lennon-McCartney) Your day breaks, your mind aches, Of kindness linger on when she no longer needs you. She wakes up, she makes up, She takes her time and doesn’t Feel she has to hurry she no longer needs you. And in her eyes you see nothing, No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one. A love that should have lasted years. You want her, you need her, And yet you don’t believe her When she says her love is dead you think she needs you And in her eyes you see nothing, No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one. A love that should have lasted years. You stay home, she goes out, She says that long ago She knew someone but now he’s gone, she doesn’t need him. Your day breaks, your mind aches, There will be times
Got To Get You Into My Life (Lennon-McCartney) I was alone, I took a ride, Another road where maybe I could see another kind of life there. Ooh, then I suddenly see you. Ooh, did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day of my life? You didn’t run,you didn’t lie You knew I wanted just to hold you. And had you gone you knew in time We’d meet again for I’d have told you. Ooh, you were meant to be near me. Ooh, and I want you to hear me Say we’ll be together ev’ry day. Got to get you into my life. What can I do, what can I be, When I’m with you I want to stay there. If I’m true I’ll never leave And if I do I know the way there. Ooh, then I suddenly see you. Ooh, did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day of my life? Got to get you into my life, Got to get you into my life. I was alone, I took a ride, Another road where maybe I could see another kind of life there. Ooh, then I suddenly see you. Ooh, did I tell you I need you Ev’ry single day ...back to top
You won’t forget her. And in her eyes you see nothing, No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one. A love that should have lasted years. Dr. Robert (Lennon-McCartney) Ring my friend I said you call Dr. Robert. Day or night he’ll be there anytime at all, Dr. Robert, Dr. Robert, You’re a new and better man, he helps you to understand. He does ev’rything he can, Dr. Robert. If you’re down he’ll pick you up, Dr. Robert. Take a drink from his special cup, Dr. Robert, Dr. Robert, He’s a man you must believe, helping ev’ryone in need, No one can succeed like Dr. Robert. Well, well, well, he’ll make you, Dr. Robert. My friend works with the nat’nal health, Dr. Robert. Don’t pay money just to see yourself with Dr. Robert, Dr. Robert, You’re a new and better man, he helps you to understand, He does ev’rything he can, Dr. Robert. Well, well, well, he’ll make you, Dr. Robert. I Want To Tell You (Harrison) I want to tell you When you’re here All those words they seem to slip away. When I get near you The game begin to drag me down. It’s all right, I’ll make you maybe next time around. But if I seem to get unkind, It’s only me, it’s not my mind, That is confusing things. I want to tell you I feel hung up and I don’t know why. I don’t mind, I could wait forever, I’ve got time.
Tomorrow Never Knows (Lennon-McCartney) It is not dying, it is not dying. Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void, It is shining, it is shining. Yet you may see the meaning of within, It is being, it is being. Love is all and love is ev’ryone, It is knowing, it is knowing. And ignorance and hate mourn the dead, It is believing, it is believing. But listen to the color of your dreams, It is not leaving, it is not leaving. So play the game “Existence” to the end Of the beginning, of the beginning, Of the beginning, of the beginning.
