OVERLAPPING MOVEMENT RHYTHM + PATTERN This was my first building design project. We were given a site where we designed a folk art museum on. We were able to chose any kind of folk art we wanted to. I got inspired by Irish folk music and dance. It is light and airy with very rhythmic patterns. I used this idea to drive my concept. I wanted the facade to appear light weight and allow daylight into the building. I also made my circulation in a way that the user almost dances through the building in plan while interacting with the lobby, the stage, and the cafe in section.

Through this project, I was learning Rhino and figuring out how to render. My renders turned out very bright, but I really liked the layered axonometric I made to the right. It showed the different systems as clear as a physical model would. I also made a model which helped me to better understand the sectional qualities of the building (shown in photo to the left).

INSPIRING FORM FLOWER + FUNCTION Avila beach is a busy tourist destination with beautiful beach front. We were asked to decide a gathering type and design a building which is inspired by that function. I focused on gatherings of celebration. As I looked into what people saw as celebration space, I noticed that many were outside or had places to eat. For that reason, I added a restaurant and included outdoor spaces with varying privacy. The form of the main indoor gathering space was inspired by studies of tulips that we had conducted earlier in the class. This form brought in light, focused views, and manipulated circulation.

With a growing background in engineering and sustainability, 9 a.m. Winter I was better able to analyze my building design. By using computer programs and daylighting models, I reached a better understanding 12 p.m. of a more realistic affect within the building. I also had a better understanding of the digital tools 3 p.m. I was using and played with my renderings more. I used one “pop color to create interest. Lobby

EMOTIVE EXPERIENCE LIGHTING + WATER With a site on the lakes of Copenhagen, we were challenged to design a bath house. Through studies of bath houses and their sensory experiences, I choose to really focus on lighting and flow within the space. For lighting, I played with light intensity to get a certain intimacy. I also thought about how to use the water from the lakes to create different light qualities. To do this, I pushed the building out in the lake and submerged and extruded in and out of the lake to capture different qualities in specific spaces. For flow, I created triangular walls that would create a feeling of compression and decompression and would direct a certain circulation.

Floor Plan with Lighting Qualities

Making a range of privacy settings through materials and lighting

For this project, we were really encouraged to really think about the emotive qualities created by space. We first went to other bath houses and used them as precedents of what we wanted for our designs. I also wanted to use this project as a way to experiment more with how I work and represent my thoughts. I worked a lot in model and hand drawing because I wanted to be able to quickly and realistically see how each design decision would effect the emotional experience. The top too images are the experience of the bath house we visited and a series of photos of water which provided the idea that the stiller the water the more private it seems. The bath house made me feel on display and felt unorganized so that’s what I wanted to contrast. The bottom three images where ideas of the experience I wanted to create.
