Bookbinding Induction

Aim: Make a 3-stitch hardback pamphlet booklet 1. 2.

3.

Fold pages using the bone folder (6 pages here). Pierce holes in the middle and 4cm either side using an awl. Discard paper with markings

4. Clip pages to hold together. 5. Thread: Start by going out of the centre hole. Then back in through either. Thread through opposite hole and back into the centre = 3-hole pamphlet stitch. [can thread any odd number, i.e. 5/7/9 hole stitch].

6. Take end pages and fold. 7. Glue a line along the folded edge. 8. Stick to inner pages, bringing the end pages 2-3mm off of the fold. 9. Trim edges to tidy up, using a metal ruler and sharp craft knife - more accurate. Always cut vertically.

10. Place book in the corner of grey board. Shift off board 5mm . 11. In opposite direction by 3mm → mark. 12. Move 6mm up ^ & mark. 13. Draw vertical & horizontal lines following marks & cut. Trace trimmed grey board and cut again. 14. Squish book between covers and hold board against another with same height. Mark & cut for spine.

15. Lay tape on 1 board & place on mat. Sit book on top with 2-3mm overhang. Place spine upright with 2mm gap. Lay 2nd board on top, in same position as the 1st. Fold tape around. 16. Find buckram or bookcloth.

17. 18. 19. 20.

Lay buckram down - rough side up. Lay taped board on top, trace. Untape board. With ruler check top lines. Use as guide for laying board back down. Glue whole side of board to buckram. Flip. Use bone folder to rub - use the point to pick out the edges.

21. Measure rulers width around board and trim. 22. 3mm from corners mark a point and draw diagonal line. Trim, glue & fold edges over board. Fold opposites. After 1 side - use bone folder to squish buckram against corner before folding adjoining edge.

23. Slot newsprint between first page and book. Glue whole side. Lay on board, focusing on the corners. Leaving 2mm gap around edge. Fold book and press - use bone folder to eliminate air pockets. 24. Repeat on other end page. This time - fold cover onto the glued page - focus on the covers lining up when closed. Push hard to glue firmly. 25. Use bone folder to score along spine for the classic look. Note: pages shouldn’t touch spine. TA DA.
