GROWTH DEC-JAN

PART4 500 words

ILKLEY IN DECEMBER Managed to get back to the art centre before Christmas to change collections from the September collection to the December collection. Concern: - This collection’s time spans over Christmas - may receive fewer results. - Wall-hanging is very different to usual work - sits well with colour palette. I need to embrace new aesthetics - the thicker linen that the first wall-hanging was printed on worked better for a wall-hanging - material is important Took note of feedback up until now and left it out for more

ILKLEY IN DECEMBER switched collections at centre

I L K L E Y I N D E C E M B E R mixed media Oil pastel and pencil on paper which is a direct development of a sketchbook page, in response to a photo taken on Ilkley Moor. The colours correlate with the palettes from the other pieces in this collection. Much prefer this to the mixed media piece from Ilkley Moor in September - much more cohesive and there are evident links to preliminary work.

I L K L E Y I N D E C E M B E R weaving Pushed skills a little further with this weaving - originally I was going to weave around another piece of wood, but decided to continue with the trend of experimenting by doing something different with this collection. I incorporated heather and other plants from Ilkley Moor and nearby places, string I’d dyed with walnut husks and excess strips of cotton from the fabric I’d dyed for the screen-print - trying to overlap certain characteristics to create a cohesive collection Suspended the weaving which changed it entirely - it had more movement and I entwined tassels which gave it a certain softness that I hope people want to feel. This came as a respone to further research from the theoretical aspect of the project - about nature’s sense of fluidity and multisensory experience.

I L K L E Y I N D E C E M B E R hanging Felt out of my comfort zone with the image on this screen-print I think it effectively translates the wild wind on the second trip to Ilkley - the colours work well within the collection but the material is a thinner, more delicate cotton material - the coarse linen from the September collection worked better for a wall-hanging because it looked and felt more substantial.

Took the opportunity to make some little samples as I played around with the screens and natural dye samples which I will sew into to enhance tactility. SAMPLE EXPERIMENTS on dyed fabrics
