Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I intend to research contemporary illustration in order to propose a body of work that focuses on retail & packaging – specifically home-wares and textiles. In addition, I’ll be analyzing the role that retail & packaging play in visual culture; in order to achieve a valid understanding of its context in society and the reasoning behind it. My individual creative research will hopefully inform my concepts & designs throughout the rest of the module. By focusing on specific subjects -- potentially the Danish concept of Hygge -- I will be analysing the power of trends and how they impact design decisions. I intend to produce a range or set of ranges that individually communicate a varying theme, e.g. the seasons or the elements. I will decide the particular direction after my initial research and sketches, this will allow for a validated decision. THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include theoretical and non-creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary Illustration practice. GENERAL THEMES: -

Communicating personality and self-expression through interior design. Can a home become a space in which we oppose the chaos of our busy lives and to counter the digital ubiquity in today’s reality? For example, embracing the art of slow living – the Danish concept of hygge.

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: -

Homewares Interior Design Environmental effects Ceramics The role that trends can play in design Seasonal collections and other ranges Inspiration taken from other artistic collections, e.g. fashion, film – such as a Wes Anderson aesthetic.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs? SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: -

Retail & Packaging: Sustainable Home Furnishings and environmental design

AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: -

The younger generations, whom are more exposed to the mass media and influenced by trends online and in the arts (16-35 year olds specifically). Students | Creatives Practitioners of slow living or follow/aware of creative bloggers whom do.

PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: -

Digital mockups | screen-prints | foiling | ranges | design boards | suppliers (ceramics & homeware)

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: -

-

Molly Hatch | Elly Jahnz | Rachel Basinger – owns ‘Oh No Rachio!’ | Rifle Paper Co. | Annthropologie | Urban Outfitters | Tigerpromt & Hallmark | Zara Home | WGSN – trend forecasters | Amanda SmithCorstom (interior stylist) Theories that analyse the impacts of environment on mood & other behaviours

CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project? What do you intend to use the skills for? Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

-

Screen-printing onto fabric/cloth Painting onto (readymade?) ceramics Developing my software skills in order to produce digital mock-ups on Photoshop – e.g. using smart objects to induce realism Making use of what is available to me – professional photography & lighting equipment to photograph my 2D & 3D work – to be used in a portfolio | on my blog | modular design boards Developing current screen-printing skills, such as different kinds of half-tone to make the most of colour, and well-considered decisions – e.g. which stock. Digital art capabilities – CAD? – Wacom / digital brushes
