EDITOR'S LETTER

Summer is here and we invite you to enjoy the 10th Edition of Alcachofa from your favourite summer spot. We are jumping right into summer mindset with tips on how to best quench your summer thirst, how to maintain your healthy lifestyle while traveling and plastic-free ideas for your summer party favours.

2019 has been the year to reevaluate our habits both big and small. This summer we invite you to think less about ‘escaping’ your everyday routine and instead on ‘looking within’ to find a quiet, creative space in your environment, home and heart to rediscover your best self. When we give ourselves free time to ‘do nothing’ we allow ourselves creative space to recharge our drained mental batteries. You may even find the natural urge to train for or start something new this coming fall! Just start to think about it over the summer, don’t make any plans or changes yet, simply plant the seeds of change in the back of your mind. Check out our interview with Ross Hernández who has completely changed her lifestyle and mindset over the last several years.

Other interesting articles are on body positivity from the perspective of skinny shaming and another on how to reconnect with your teenager in the Information Age. Being fulling present is a challenge for everyone these days given the fast flow of information and news and the constant contact with the Worldwide Web. So, this summer take a step back, slow down and enjoying doing nothing, or not much at all. You could go to the farmers’ market or check out the latest local theatre, but don’t feel you have to ‘fill’ your summer with activities. Give yourself permission to enjoy doing nothing except being present with yourself and your loved ones.

(I avoid carrying too much food, because at customs they could take it from me, only what I will eat depending on the duration of the flight). Remember that most food is allowed in the hand luggage, although nothing with liquid (soups for example, they will not let them pass).

2. In my checked baggage, I always bring healthy snacks like: almonds, nuts, 75% cocoa chocolate (my favourite), some homemade gluten-free cookies (extras in case my colleagues also love them during our coffee break), etc. In short, food that I can then carry in my purse to calm hunger between work meetings.

3. Before traveling I research online for health food stores and cafes near the hotel where I will stay, so I can decide what I will carry in my luggage or that I will buy things when I arrive at my destination.

4. Always, always, always, I travel with my reusable water bottle that I can fill with water on the plane and at any time, to be well hydrated and contaminate less.

5. In restaurants, I talk with the waiters or cooks, to ask for small changes to the menu, such as asking them to prepare me a green juice from what fresh vegetables they have in the kitchen, or to replace the fries with salad, even if this requires in some cases a small extra surcharge, my health is worth it.

6. Finally, a little personal secret: When my trip is only for a couple of days, I find out if the hotel room has mini-bar fridge; Then I can take homemade food, packed in airtight containers, which allow me to keep it and consume it at the time of my lunch or dinner. For example, when I travel to places with a warm climate, I love bringing my quinoa tabouleh with olives, which is a refreshing meal and lasts three days in the fridge.

Keeping up with these habits and doing at least thirty minutes of walking every day, now the only thing I accumulate in my trips are frequent flyer miles!

QUENCH YOUR SUMMER THIRST!

T U L Y Q U I N T A N I L L A

With the heat of summer we need to drink more fluids to stay hydrated. Here are a few tips on how and when to drink water to hydrate better and at the same time improve our digestion.

It is said that we should drink two litres of water, but when? I recommend the following: Drink a large glass of water when you wake up. If you can add a drop of lemon oil or the juice of a few lemons it is better because it rehydrates, detoxes and alkalizes the body at the same time.

When you drink water, wait at least half an hour beforeeating any food. That makes it work without interfering withfood and digestion.
