RECOVERY FROM ARCHITECTURAL TRAUMA Year 5 - A New Methodology for the Repair of Ruined Monuments

The remains of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s Caledonia Road Church provided a vessel in which to test the consequences of the approach to the repair of ruinous monuments. The initial research established a methodology which could objectively examine the effects of rebuilding. The city is in a constant cycle of damage and repair. Eisenman, remarking on Aldo Rossi’s understanding of the city states “abandonment and death – the attributes of the skeleton – are through this dialect now seen as parts of a process of transformation; death is a new beginning associated with some unknown hope”. From social upheaval to religious conflict, from the smallest amount of sustained destruction to the devastation of a country, the reparation is critical. In architecture we are faced with the problems of rebuilding what remains following disaster. Developing an attitude to repair and understanding its implications are crucial to the successful repair of a city. This project aimed to test and examine these themes through study of theory and design.

POST-QUAKE VISIONS Crevalcore, Italy - Shortlisted Competition Entry This project was submitted for an international design competition, seeking ideas for restructuring the earthquake damaged town of Crevalcore in Emilia Romanga. The Roman grid plan is the most prominent urban form, although a dense and convoluted inhabitation leaves limited usable space within the blocks. The proposal acknowledges the significance of the grid, and suggests a rationalisation of two urban blocks, creating organised public courtyard spaces. New interventions intend to provide optimum floor areas for each site: maximising the development potential, yet seeking continuity with the existing fabric.

A TOWN HALL FOR LEITH Year 4 - What is a Town Hall in the 21st Century?

A Town Hall for Leith Perspective Section (above) Ground Floor Plan (right)

From the deduction that Leith retains an individual identity, distinct from that of central Edinburgh, this project aimed to address issues of identity and social cohesion through community empowerment; affording a new structure of participatory local democracy to the people of Leith, manifested in an autonomous Town Hall. Leith is engaged with politics and there are many community groups which actively work to improve the area, from environmental issues, preserving its history and promoting a vision for the future. Historically, the town hall, as a status symbol, looked to show off the cultural attributes of the area, however after the Second World War, the public facilities almost disappeared from the buildings programme. Losing these features further distanced the public from the democratic process. Giving space back to the public, community organisations and societies aimed to break the divide between the civic centre and public cultural buildings.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE Unick Architects November 2011 to August 2012 The opportunity to work in a fast paced practice with large scale projects allowed a greater understanding of the intricacies of an architecural office. From conceptual design to completion, client meetings to site visits, my experience was varied and enjoyable. As confidence was developed in my ability it became my responsibilty to put together drawing packages, select finishes and compile presentation boards for clients to view and approve, as well as working on design and detail drawings.

DUNDEE CITY ARCHIVE Year 3 - Industry, History & Culture Inserting a public building into a sensitive industrial quarter of Dundee, the project aims to interpret the historic jute mill typology prevalent throughout the former industrial landscape. The scheme intervenes within an existing mill building and proposes three courtyards from which the functions of the building, a city archive, are accessed. The project looked to integrate these external spaces into the building, each with a different character and level of intimacy with the building, as well as integrating itself within the city.
