roadway in the 1950s was extraordinarily good to William Inge until it wasn’t. Then it turned merciless. After the remarkable successe “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1957) came the play that broke the streak: “A Loss of Roses,” which shuttered aft three weeks in 1959, even with the beautiful, 22-year-old Warren Beatty in a central role. At 21, he’s perfectly content to keep living at home, thanks to Oedipal yearnings that Helen fends off with vigilance.Enter Lila Green, an out-of-work actress who was Kenny’s baby sitter when he was small. Lila, who comes to live with the Bairds, is a fragile, emotionally unstable woman of the kind that so fascinated Inge and his sometime friend Tennessee Ben Kahre’s Kenny blossoms into a creepy charmer in the presence of this older woman, and theexcellent Deborah Hedwall’s kind, lonely Helen is grateful to have Lila for a confidante. Lila is meant to be a tragic figure, vulnerable to the predations of the world, but Jean Lichty gives her no more dimension or fluidity than a paper doll. Ccording to Inge, the piece belongs to Lila. But that’s not the effect of the play, which lacks cohesion, or of Dan Wackerman’s sepia-tone production, which lacks emotional intensity. “A Loss of Roses” is a curio, but one that’s obscure for good reason. After the remarkable successes “Come Back, Little Sheba” (1950), “Picnic” (1953), “Bus Stop” (1955), “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1957) came the play that broke the streak: “A Loss of Roses,” which shuttered after three weeks in 1959, even with the 6 eclectic | 2014 MAY
