Brief We were divided into several groups and asked to choose a fairy tale. The task was to come up with a contemporary moral for the story. We also had to shoot a trailer as well as communicate the story visually through a medium of our choice.
2
Thumbelina A girl no bigger than her mother’s thumb feels all alone in the world knowing she is the only person her size. Her wish for a companion at last comes true when the prince of the fairy’s arrives at her window sill. However, the naive Thumbelina’s life goes downward from there when a toad kidnaps her. While she tries to find a way home, she begins to grow up and learns about hope with the help of the friends she always wanted.

Ideation We picked out a unique essence from the story, Even the littlest of things can bring about an enormous change. Thumbelina was the littlest thing in the story but nobody spared their time in getting to know her better.Attracted by her extenal beauty everyone greedily rushed to pocess her and shut her out of her bright future.Naive and unaware of the evil intentions of the word tumbelina continuously fell into the traps set by others. Using the magic of self reliance she learned to overcome the hurdles in life.

Story 1)Within the forests of Wayanad at the dawn of the 19th century lived an age old tribe called the Kurichiyars. They lived under the leadership of their chief in harmony with nature, feeding on wild honey and shooting poisonous arrows at their trespassers. The chief raised his younger daughter Tumbi, alongside the forest’s authentic beauty and wildlife, well rooted in the skill of archery and Kalaripayattu. 2) One rainy afternoon Charles, the son of the British governor gallivants into the forests of Wayanad Hunting elephants. From a distance Charles spotted a baby elephant feeding on plantain. he got a closer vision of the animal he sees a woman draped in white with beautiful long black hair slicked back into a bun with colourful flow-
ers taming the animal. He watched her gracefully singing to the bees and collecting honey from the beehives. Charles slowly made his way through the forest towards Tumbi and introduced himself to her. and was mesmerised by her flawless skin, tanned to perfection. 3) Tumbi, timid and unaware of Charles’s motive falls for his charming smile and blonde hair. Charles called Tumbi by the name “Thumbelina “as she reminded him of the classic he once read in his childhood. Charles gradually drifts Tumbi away from her tribe. She almost forgets who she really was. 4) With the help of Tumbi’s care taker Charles influences her to run away with him to the British quarters. The very next day rumour spread
in the forest that the chief ’s daughter has betrayed the forest and eloped with the enemy. The chief sent his best archers to hunt for her but they failed the task.Charles initially introduces Tumbi to the rest of his British crew members. The British eyed her with disgrace. The rest of the British women were pale white with silky blonde hair and light blue eyes. They mocked Tumbi’s dark complexion and tortured her in every mentally inhuman way possible. They called her untouchable and a worthless savage. Tumbi cried herself to sleep every single night. 5) One evening as Tumbi returned to the British quarters after fetching firewood from the forest she was disturbed by the site of all the civilised British women dressed in long fluffy dresses, slurping
tea from fancy tea cups. As she looked down at her humble palm leaf skirt and flower blouse, tears of shame ran down her pink cheeks. She runs as fast as her legs could carry her. As she approached a ficus tree to hang herself; the conversation between Charles and another British man behind the tree caught her attention. She overheard their motive of using Tumbi as bait to take over the forests of Wayanad and all its precious spices like pepper and the other produces along with it by conquering the chief. 6) Infurious Tumbi gathers all her courage, chops of her lustrous long black hair, burns herself with firewood and escapes the British quarters disguised as a slave. The thought that she had betrayed her father bothered her. As she stopped by a river to quench her thirst a wild angry herd
of humongous elephants run towards her destroying everything in its way. All of a sudden, a woman dressed in animal carcus leans in from nowhere, grabs Tumbi and saves her. 7) The woman provided Tumbi with food, clothing and shelter in return for the skill of archery. Spring, winter, autumn and summer passed by, gradually Tumbi build a strong group of archers with the help of the tribal woman. 8) In the late summer of 89 war struck between the tribe Kurichiyars and the notorious British to save the forests of Wayanad. Alone, the tribe stood no chance against the British .The Chief watched miserably as his men were brutally shot down. Alas, Charles walked towards the Chief pointing a loaded rifle at him. Instantaneously a woman jumps in with a bow and arrow, Crew cut and a sharp eye. As she stood
face to face with the man she loved unconditionally she read his lips mumble the name” Thumbelina!” in awe. Determining her target, precisely in one fluid action Tumbi shot an arrow straight through Charles’s head and saved her father and the forests of Wayanad from the British.

Teaser We symbolically communicated the story through a teaser. We used hand shadow puppetry to tell the story of thumbelina whom in our story is Thumbi. We used colored backgrounds of white for peace, red for abuse and blue for freedom. The teaser begins with Tumbi coming into existance continued by evil hands abusing her and in the end she gathers all her courage and breaks free. Freedom is also expressed through wings in the end.

Reflective Note I learnt the process of communicating a story as well as team work effectively through this assignment. Jotsna Ma’am taught us how to work positively even when we are out of our comfort zones. With the help of Tajinder sir and kuldeep sir I learnt the basics of the softwares Premiere pro and after effects. The final output which was the board game,Krisha and I came up with was truely the result of our strong ideation and execution.
