Research

I have always been interested in the concept of pockets and about why women do not have them. I figured it was a way to keep their sillouette in clothing or sell them purses- which seemed like an evil way to make them look ridiculous and become targets for theft. Then, A few weeks ago I stumbled up on this podcast and found that a majority of those things were true. The 99% invisible podcast goes through the personal histories and presents of podcasts, using it as a metaphor for privilege and resilliance. Pockets have become a symbol of gender more than we even realize. There is a reason that whenever a woman is complimented on a dress she responds with “Thanks it has pockets!

Mood Board

I want this book to reflect the material. It is whimsical and engaging while also being a bit serious in its approach to discussing privilege through the inclusion or exclusion of something as seemingly trivial as pockets. I want to translate this through creating spread for the book that are colorful and interactive. This will demonstrate rather ridiculous disparities while also having a visual language for the more serious pieces as well. I want to change the sizes of the pages as the reader moves through the book. As well as add some pockets for the reader to interact with themselves.

I had never worn a dress before. I’m sure it was slightly graceless, as like all the things I did at the time seem to have been. I met Piers on our very first week in college. It must have been day one or two. It was really early. We went to a super PC liberal arts school, and so our freshmen mixer was a cross-dressing dance. Which is such an outdated term now but whatever, that’s what it was called.

I think all they told us was, “You should wear clothes of the opposite gender.” They probably said it in a way that’s slightly more, you know, more literate in the differences between gender

I immediately locked myself out of my room. And I was like, “Oh no my keys are in my room!” because I didn’t have anywhere to put them!

The dress had no pockets. We all ended up in the big dance hall where there’s really loud music and it was like, unbearably hot. All the ladies eyebrow pencil mustaches were running onto their teeth with sweat and things like that. And I believe I just clutched my keys in my hand and thought

The dress had no pockets. Piers’ brand new roommate let him back in, but then he went to sleep, so Piers wanted to make sure he didn’t make that mistake again. He couldn’t lose his keys at the party.

THIS is what we are talking about when we talk about pockets. Pockets speak to this question of preparedness, and your ability to move in public and to be confident. It’s really difficult to get around if you don’t have what you need, and it’s about, I think it’s about mobility and movement in public. Feedback

There are two things that were suggested revisions. Firstly, the treatment of the pull quotes, there are two options using the handwritten-type or enlarging the font. Secondly, the flow of the information, such as the backs of the posters and the covers. As well as the flow into the intro of the podcast on the first page.

I decided to combine the large serif and hand written type. This way the hand written type can be continued in use as a point of emphasis.

I included a few more places where I play with the language so there aren’t so many pages of static conversational text. Including the intro.

26

Reflection

The read is both dynamic and consistent in the visual languages and tones that I use from silly to serious. I also made sure to include some surprising moments such as the magazine type spreads in the middle and the posters that pull out of the pockets. My goal is that the reader understands the elements of privilege and construct in this topic.
