NOISY
MEDIA QUIET PROGRAMMATIC CONCEPT The existing conditions of the library do not provide a navigable program for the user as well as lack sufficient study spaces for both group and individual study situations. As a result, the programmatic concept for the library uses media as a means of negotiating noisy and quiet spaces through a gradation of programmatic elements according to noise level. Furthermore, the existing entrance is not identifiable or appropriately located. Therefore, the proposed dual entrance serves as a throughway to connect the two most trafficked areas on campus. Since this project focuses on building re-use, the 30’ x 30’ campus and building grid is also addressed.

SUSTAINABILITY The next layer of the project is reducing the cooling load of the building. Due to the lack of shade on the site, the roof is advantageous for producing solar energy for the campus. Heat-reflective glazing allows for increased natural daylight during the day. The subtracted concrete structure will be re-used as roof gravel to reflect heat. The detail is the help area and digital media center. The drop ceiling and wooden slate shades serve to darken the media center for optimal lighting. Translucent walls create a destination and serve as a landmark on campus. The individual study desk is designed to coincide with the under floor air distribution system. The combination reduced energy needs to condition the building, as well as provides for greater reach for electrical capacity (a concern of the client). The user gains greater control with a movable system.
