AND NOW We’ve reconfigured the whole property. We’ve added bedrooms, enlarged the hall and created an open-plan living space. STYLE TIP Be creative. ‘Having a relaxed home is so important to me – there is chaos, because it’s for living in, not for show!’
When Rachel and Jonathan’s family grew, they decided to extend their first home rather than move house
S
truck by the 1950s bungalow’s potential, Rachel and Jonathan Kohler snapped up this property after their first viewing in November 2011. ‘The house hadn’t been decorated since the 1970s – all the walls were covered in flock wallpaper and flowery carpets ran throughout the house,’ says Rachel. ‘But I loved the high ceilings and the fact that underneath the carpets were original floorboards. I could see it would make the perfect home for us. The sale went through smoothly and when we moved in, we prioritised replacing the old kitchen and bathroom, then redecorated throughout. But five years later, we faced a dilemma. We’d just had our second child and were desperate for more space. We either needed to move, or find a way to make our existing home stretch into somewhere for a growing family.

IDEA TO STEAL
‘Use a rustic table with benches that tuck underneath to double as a kitchen island’
We decided we valued the local schools, the short commute into London and our leafy street too much to leave. Having worked out that we didn’t want to move, we just craved more space, we enlisted the services of an architect and chose to extend into the loft, adding a further two bedrooms and another bathroom. I had quite a few drawings of what I wanted to achieve, but I just didn’t know if it would be possible. Thankfully, the architect was able to bring my plans to life. We ended up taking out every internal wall, repositioning the downstairs bathroom and moving the kitchen location from the left of the property to the right. It’s amazing how much you can rearrange and extend a bungalow – we were able to change so much more than we had first thought. While the building work ran smoothly after an

Planning the space This was our first home and our first ever renovation project, so it was quite challenging at times to manage all the various elements going on at once. We had to figure out how we would use the new space without physically experiencing it, which was stressful – we had one chance to get it right!

Renovation overload Once the building work got underway, it took six months to complete the project. Luckily, my parents live just
around the corner from us and kindly let us live with them during the bulk of the work. It was great to be close enough to keep up with the progress and to be on site whenever we needed to be, without having to live among the chaos and dust that a major renovation inevitably brings. But, even so, it was exhausting, especially with a five-month-old baby and two-yearold in tow. The subject of the renovations began to take over most of our conversations and it was such a relief when the work was finally finished, and we could get back to normality.

has created an imposing entrance to the house. It was such an improvement on the original space, which was a narrow corridor with all of the rooms coming off it. Now, it’s a room of its own and even houses my auntie’s old piano. The open-plan kitchen with its 3.6-metre high ceiling leads through into the living room, and French doors open out into the garden. But, the vaulted kitchen ceiling with the glass gable window has to be the biggest triumph. It gives the kitchen a wow factor that you might not expect to find in a chalet bungalow.

Gently chip away a small area of plaster using a masonry hammer and chisel over the wall you want to expose. If the brick looks in good condition (not crumbly or cracked), then continue to chip away the plaster over the entire area you want to expose. You will need to scrape away any loose plaster that’s left

with a wire brush, until the bricks and mortar are completely clear. Next, give the bricks a good clean. Start at the top of the area and clean off any dust and residue using a sponge dipped in a bowl of warm water. Finally, seal the brick using a specialist brick sealant, so that the surface remains in good condition for years to come.

We have scribbles on the walls, dropped food on the rugs, knocked-over plants and plenty of chipped paint! You just have to get over it and expect it to happen. Everything is wipeable and can easily be repainted if and when it needs it.

Clever hacks
There are some things you just can’t buy off the peg and you have to think outside of the box. The shelves in our kitchen, for example, were made from old scaffolding boards that I found on eBay, which I then sanded down and varnished several times until I had given them the look and depth of colour that

Use an embroidery hoop (Dia30cm) as your frame. Sandwich a large doily between the two rings, then tighten the tension to secure. To create the hanging tassels at the bottom of the hoop, take several one-metre lengths of wool in the same colour and fold over in half. Place the folded lengths, loop side at the top, behind the ring and feed the ends through the loop, then pull taut to secure them in place. Then, make a plait using a contrasting colour wool. Follow the instructions in step two to make a tassel, but instead

of leaving the lengths of wool loose, plait them together and knot to secure at the end. Repeat 6 to 8 times with contrasting colours. You can also vary the thickness of the tassels and plaits as you go to add extra interest. Make 25 pom-poms in at least four different colours. Go for clashing brights or soft shades to suit your scheme. Arrange a row of pom-poms around the hoop (mixing up the colours), then glue or tie them to the frame. Secure a second row of pom-poms at the bottom of the hoop.

his house is quite surprising, because it looks narrow and a bit cottagey from the front,’ says Claire. ‘Inside, it goes back a long way, so people are always wowed by how much space and light there is. It couldn’t be more different from how it looked when my husband Dan and I moved in. We were renting a place in London, but wanted to buy our own home. We started looking in this area, which is more affordable, and close to my family, but even so, there wasn’t much in our price range. I definitely wanted a period property, as I love the character, the sash windows and the high ceilings you get in older homes. When the estate agent rang me about this house, I dropped everything, rushed to view it and made an offer on the spot. I have my own property development business, so my experience meant that I could see straight away exactly what I could do with the place.

The house was liveable, but everything was pretty tired, and the plumbing and electrics needed modernising. Upstairs there were two bedrooms, but you had to walk through one to reach the shabby bathroom. The ground floor had two reception rooms, a narrow galley kitchen at the back, and a mouldy shower room beyond. I decided to keep the small front room separate, but knock through the rest of the ground floor. We could then add a small side extension to make a single, open-plan kitchen-diner/living area with lots of light and big, glazed doors leading out to the garden. In a

I had everything planned out in advance in my mind, ready for work to begin soon after we moved in. We swapped some of the ugly, modern windows for traditional wooden sashes, upgraded the plumbing and wiring systems, and had the front room replastered. In the meantime, I had drawn up my own design for the planned extension. It was a modest size, and very straightforward, so we didn’t need planning permission or an architect, which saved us a fortune. The major building work took about four months. Luckily, it was the summer and the weather was great, as the back of the house was open to the elements for quite a while. We lived mostly upstairs and had no proper kitchen or bathroom, but we went to my mum’s for meals and showers and I didn’t mind the hassle. I love that new smell of fresh paint and plaster, and it was so exciting seeing the changes happening. I’m very organised, too, so I acted as the project manager, checking every delivery myself and

Laminate makes a great choice for most rooms. It’s practical, good value, and there’s a wealth of great designs that cheat the look of wooden, stone or tiled floors. Cheaper, flat-edged laminates give an impressively smooth finish. Grooved-edge laminates cost more, but look closer to the real thing. Some are textured to mimic stone or wood grain. Prices vary from less than £10sq m, to about £40. A pricier laminate will be thicker and more authentic-looking and should come with a warranty against scratching, staining or fading. Look for high durability ratings for busy rooms such as halls and kitchens. A less robust one will be fine for a low-traffic bedroom. For bathrooms, choose a product with a waterproof core. If you want to DIY, there’s plenty of fitting guidance online. If in doubt, paying for a professional installer will be money well spent for a perfect finish.

Smart remodelling
I used to be a kitchen designer, so I had no problem laying out our new room. I planned a space with the units running along one side. I would have loved to have an island but that would have left no room for a table, so I had to decide between the two. I picked contemporary, taupe gloss cabinets, with white quartz worktops to maximise the light. At the

other end of the room, which is our seating area, I remodelled the understairs space to include smart storage and a place for the TV. This part of the house is always bright and, now, we spend a lot of time here, especially since our daughter Georgie arrived. Dan and I can cook, chat and relax while she’s playing, and it’s great for entertaining, too.

home office. We kept it as a separate room, but the same flooring runs right through so it all feels connected. I took an old fitted cupboard and some shelves out of one of the alcoves and had new, much-needed storage built either side of the chimney breast, so the room feels balanced. These big units hold the ironing board, vacuum cleaner, shoes, bags and coats as well as the electricity meter, so we couldn’t do without them.
Upper floor upheaval All our savings went into the ground floor changes, so it was over a year before we could start tackling the upstairs rooms. We redecorated and had storage built in our bedroom. We made an access passage to the bathroom with a simple
stud wall, and added a new doorway into the second bedroom, which is now Georgie’s nursery. The bathroom itself was more complicated and cost more than we’d anticipated. We pulled out an old airing cupboard to make room for the walk-in shower, but the shape of the room meant an expensive bespoke enclosure was the only option. I’d set my heart on large, marble-look tiles, too, and so didn’t want to compromise. I’m really happy with the result, as I’ve achieved the luxury feel I was after.

Gently sand down the chair, ensuring you are wearing a dust mask and protective eye wear. Use a dry cloth or brush to remove any sanding dust, before wiping the chair down. Apply a base coat of wood primer. For an even finish, you could try a matt spray paint. If using paint, eggshell or vinyl matt will provide a low sheen. For a super matt finish, go for a chalk paint. After the first coat has dried completely, repeat with a second coat until coverage is even. If you used chalk paint, apply a coat of finishing wax to the chair to protect the paint.

OUR HOME A four-bed 1930s family house in Hertfordshire. We moved here in September 2012. WHEN WE MOVED IN This was a traditional red-brick house. Inside everything was liveable, but very dated. The rooms were all shades of peach, and the kitchen was tiny, with a really old Aga. AND NOW It’s totally different! We’ve extended up and out, adding a bedroom and bathroom upstairs and creating a contemporary, open-plan living area downstairs. There’s masses of light, texture and plenty of deep, earthy colour. T
his definitely wasn’t our perfect home to start with,’ says Pippa. ‘I was looking for a period place, but when Stuart and I came to see this house, we could both see its potential. The tucked-away location was brilliant, there was space to extend out to the side, and the back garden was gorgeous. We knew with a bit of work we would be able to turn it into something quite special. Unfortunately, several other buyers clearly thought the same as us as it went to sealed bids, but amazingly, we got lucky and our bid won!

Although it was very dated, the house was in good shape inside, so we were able to move in straight away with our two little girls, Elsie-May and Amber. We lived with the old-fashioned, small kitchen and bathroom, the traditional layout and the wall-to-wall peach decor for about five years. We spent that time wisely, learning about the light and space in the house, and understanding how we all live and move around in the space. As we enjoy spending a lot of time together as a family, an open-plan layout suits us. But, we realised we wanted more living room, masses of natural light and an easy flow downstairs. Upstairs, we were keen to add a fourth bedroom and an en suite. It was also important to us that our home could adapt as the girls got older.

It took us five years to save up and to devise a complete transformation of both the inside and outside of the

We could plan our spending, too, set a clear budget and save up a buffer to cover any unforeseen extras that usually crop up at some point during a renovation. Along with knocking through the existing ground floor, we decided to extend the living space and put in a high, vaulted ceiling. The garage became a playroom for the girls, and we built another floor above it to house our new bedroom, which also has a dramatic, pitched roof. For the outside of the house, we chose a contemporary look with rustic weatherboard and smart, nearly-black render. Once our plans had been approved, we found a local building firm that had been recommended and the work got underway. We’d arranged to rent somewhere for three months while the major work was done, but there was a bit

of a mix-up and we ended up moving back about six weeks early. There was a makeshift kitchen and no heating so things were a bit difficult, but I just focused on the end result.
In the zone
Our all-in-one kitchen, dining and living space is now the centre of our home, but I discovered that getting an open-plan layout to work can be tricky. The height creates such an illusion of space, and really adds the wow factor, but it all seemed huge and a bit overwhelming at first. For me, the key is ‘zoning’ to make things feel calm and ordered. I wanted to mark out the living, dining and office areas within the room, and I’ve used colour to bring a different mood to each space. Stuart and I both love rich, earthy tones and rather than being oppressive, I find them really comfortable and inviting, especially as we’ve got skylights and

Decant your staples – such as rice, pasta, flour and oats – into sealed jars for a uniform look. Display similar items together to create visual impact. Show off a collection of jugs, trio of vases or pair of decanters by propping them on the same shelf. Think practically – it’s not just about displaying your favourite platter! Everyday items that are in constant use, such as glasses, mugs and bowls, are handy to have on shelves in easy reach, too. Try not to overpack the shelves. Vary the heights of items on display, stacking some and leaving others in a single layer. Or prop items on top of books to create different levels. Leaving a little space around items will reduce the feeling of clutter and help create a sense of order. Add texture and interest with plants and framed pictures.

Embracing bold colour
I chose Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue, which is a super-dark blue-green, to zone the cosy seating area. When the living space was first finished, it had a white undercoat on all of the walls and looked really bright, fresh and spacious. For a moment I thought, “should we keep it like this?” I’m so glad I didn’t waver on my plans though. As soon as that inky green went on, it grounded the space and made it all seem more manageable. The big rug was another zoning element that I could build around, and once I had the corner sofa in the centre of the room facing the fire, the layout started to come together. I did
go for paler shades around the dining table and kitchen to boost the light and make those parts feel more practical and active. The dining table overlooks the garden and the desk is opposite, facing away from the centre of the room, so it feels separate from what’s happening elsewhere.

Room with a view
With open-plan living, you have to think about what’s visible from anywhere in the room. You need some softer touches to lift the space and give it life, so I always try to have fresh flowers and foliage around. I’m lucky that the garden we inherited here was beautifully planted up, so I can usually find something pretty to bring indoors. I’ve also got a few

Make or upcycle your own furniture with metal hairpin legs. Hairpin legs come in various heights so you could get some to make a matching stool, too. For a table, H71cm is perfect. Finishes include bare metal, chrome, brass or copper. Look out for vibrant, powder-coated metal finishes for a shot of colour. Choose between a 2-rod or 3-rod style. Shorter, 2-rod legs work on lighter-weight pieces, while sturdy, 3-rod legs are better suited for heavy wood tops. Fitting is straightforward. Each leg has a metal fixing plate attached, which simply screws onto the base of your tabletop.

We knew we wanted a home that would go on working for us all as the girls grow up. Their playroom is self-contained, so they can enjoy feeling independent and later on it’ll become more of a den. ABOUT ME I’m Julie Wrigley, 56, a researcher and teacher, and I live in York with my partner, John Hollington, 59, a designer. In January 2017, we bought this 1960s three-bedroom terraced house in need of renovation. MY CHALLENGE The kitchen was original to the house. It had beige units, peeling lino and harvesterstyle tiles falling off the walls. MY WISH LIST I wanted an openplan space, incorporating kitchen, dining and sitting areas that didn’t feel cramped. I also wanted a modernist but restrained 1970s look, to reflect the house’s age.

With limited space, Julie and John faced the challenge of designing a stylish, open-plan kitchendiner that wouldn’t look too cramped

y partner, John, has always liked this style of house,’ says Julie. ‘He liked this estate’s 1960s architecture and the communal concept. People tend to stay in these houses once they buy them, so they rarely come up for sale. When we came to view this place, I thought, “wow, this is wonderful”. Not everyone feels like that - some people have commented that it looks like a prison or a council estate. The house was dated, with its original kitchen, and full of dark furniture, but we knew immediately that we wanted it, because of the design and its location within a conservation area.

IDEA TO STEAL
‘Break up squares and rectangles with a surprise circle’
We wanted to reconfigure the interior, and we continued to live here while the work was carried out. John redesigned the layout so the downstairs is mainly an open-plan kitchen-diner/living area. We replaced the old kitchen at the front with a utility room and a cloakroom. Upstairs, we reduced the three bedrooms and one bathroom to two double bedrooms and a larger bathroom. With an area of 2.3x1.7m for our kitchen, space was at a premium so the challenge was to design a practical layout that wouldn’t feel too cramped. Luckily, our building contractor, Harrison Builders, was great and recommended all of the trades for us to use, too. We already liked Wood & Wire’s furniture, but hadn’t seen its bespoke, handcrafted kitchens. We visited the showroom and loved the use of birch plywood and pops of colour. We showed them John’s plans and they designed a bespoke kitchen. We chose a worktop 30cm deeper than usual to accommodate bigger, pull-out drawers to make up

CHOOSE A WORKTOP
Consider how much upkeep your chosen material will need. If you have young children, easilymarked surfaces may not be ideal. A heat-resistant material such as granite is a savvy choice, so you can place hot pans on the worktop without damaging it. Concerned about hygiene? Go for an anti-bacterial surface such as stainless steel, but be aware this will get scratched over time. Hardwood is an excellent pick for food prep areas. Woods such as teak often have a high oil content and are water resistant. Laminate worktops look much more realistic these days and mimic materials such as slate, granite, marble and wood. Low maintenance, they can usually be cut and fitted by a DIY enthusiast.

‘We chose a matt black resin composite worktop to offset the blue units’
for our lack of wall units. We chose a U-shaped layout for the kitchen area and then turned the space under the stairs into a spot for our fridge-freezer, a pull-out larder and a storage cupboard. For a modernist but restrained 1970s look, in keeping with the house, we chose blue units to match one of the colours in the geometric tiles in our splashback.
The hard work
Work began in June 2017. The walls contained asbestos, so the first job was to have it removed by a specialist company. That took three months, and the house resembled a crime scene, with everyone in protective suits. Afterwards, the whole place needed a deep clean. We had to rewire and replumb throughout and skim

the Artex ceilings. We designed the kitchen so that the pipework and switches are hidden behind an inbuilt shelf and the upstairs bathroom pipes are enclosed inside a ceiling bulkhead which also defines our kitchen area, separating it from the dining and sitting space. We chose engineered cork flooring, as it’s quiet, warm underfoot and has the period look we were after. For the walls, we chose Farrow & Ball’s Blackened - it’s modern and light with a hint of grey. John designed several pieces, including our dining table and the ceiling lights. The whole project took five months. Now, the kitchen works perfectly, is functional and easy to keep clean. It’s a little bit quirky, and perhaps not to everyone’s taste – but it suits us perfectly.’

A PLYWOOD KITCHEN
Julie’s units are in 2020’s hottest material, plywood. Time to give ply a try? is much more affordable. And, while it’s more expensive than manufactured boards like MDF, the cost savings come when processing the material. MDF needs to be laminated or foil wrapped on all four sides, whereas plywood can be used as it comes.
What is plywood?
Plain plywood kitchen door fronts can be surprisingly attractive in their own right, with a modern, pale timber look that’s very now. Think Scandi chic with hints of pared-back industrial charm. However, the main attraction of plywood is the edges, where the striped lamination can be seen. Many designers use this decorative element for a touch of pattern.
Made by gluing thin layers of wood together, modern plywood is light, yet surprisingly strong. This is because the layers are laid with the grain crosslaminated (running at right angles to each other), providing strength and restricting movement. The thicker the ply, the more rigid it will be – three-ply or five-ply is typically used for kitchen cabinetry.
Is it expensive? There are various grades of plywood, but birch is most common in kitchens as it is good quality, yet attractively priced. Compared with solid wood, plywood

We’re seeing more colourful takes on plywood in kitchens this year. This new direction sees colour added onto plywood doors and end panels. Plywood doors, with a layer of melamine laminate (think Formica) are particularly on-trend, not to mention easy to clean.
Is it practical? Yes. Plywood is water-resistant but to achieve a low maintenance, wipe- clean surface, it’s usually sealed with a clear protective finish. It’s worth requesting marine grade plywood for areas around the sink, for peace of mind. Melaminefaced plywood is exceptionally low fuss.

ine years ago, when it was just the two of us, the bungalow had all the room we needed,’ says Suzanne. ‘But after our three children came along, we desperately needed more space as Sammuel and Dixie were sharing a bedroom with bunk beds, while our youngest, Bibi, was sleeping in our room. Having worked hard for years to be able to increase our mortgage, we finally built an extension in summer 2018. It would have been nice to have four or five bedrooms, but planning restrictions meant we couldn’t build upwards. At first, our architect Laura Clarke came up with a design featuring a small mezzanine-level bedroom for Sammuel, with a small guest room underneath. But we didn’t have enough money and decided to prioritise our needs over the occasional guest.

In the end we went for a rear extension with an open-plan kitchen-diner and new main bedroom with en suite, which makes the most of the views over the fields. The third bedroom, which we’d previously used as a playroom, was incorporated into a wider double height hallway and we pinched a metre from our old bedroom – now Sammuel’s room – in order to create space for the en suite. By the time the six-month build was completed, however, we’d run out of money and had to get creative when fitting out our en-suite bathroom.
Our vision We wanted a luxurious grown-up bathroom, so decided to keep it really simple and clean, with ply walls, a walk-in shower and freestanding bath. As the kitchen is ply, too, it gives the house a cohesive feel. Plus, it’s also a lot

cheaper than the cost of tiles and a decent tiler. The surface needs to be protected every few years with Osmo oil to stop it going mouldy, but it won’t get worn like the kitchen worktops might, so I’m hoping it will last a long time. Originally, we had planned to have the room closed off, but when my neighbour came over, she suggested we keep it open and have sliding doors so you can lie in the bath and enjoy the views of the garden. As it evolved we really liked the open feel as it made the bedroom seem so much bigger, so we didn’t even bother with sliding doors in the end.
Putting the look together
To save money, we used an Ikea kitchen cabinet as a vanity unit but splashed out on a statement basin. I’d seen a shape I really liked on Lusso Stone’s website, but asked The Poured Project to make a bespoke design in concrete, which it later added to its range. Picking the bath was easy, as I fell in love with this freestanding design straight away. It’s my favourite thing in the room and works well
with the large white floor tiles. I knew I wanted black taps and fittings to give the room a contemporary feel, even though we’d had a bad experience with poor quality black taps in the other bathroom. This time we went for higher quality products from Lusso Stone, which come with a 25-year guarantee. We also got a Harvey water softener to stop limescale.
The challenges
Unfortunately, we were really restricted with the layout as the loo had to be in a specific position due to the gradient of the existing tricky pipework. In hindsight, we would’ve had it tucked away where the shower is. It would’ve been nice to have a window on the wall above the bath as well, but it was too much hassle to get planning permission. We also had issues with the floor tiles. The first ones looked awful with the dark grout as they weren’t uniform, so we ripped them up and laid porcelain ones from BC Ceramics instead. Despite the challenges we faced, we love our new en suite and have had nothing but compliments on it.’

Decide on the design depending on your storage needs. If you don’t require extra drawers, try a floating shelf or a platform made from scaffolding boards and brackets for an industrial look. You’ll need to cut a hole in the top of your unit to accommodate the waste pipe for your basin. If the waste’s on show, perhaps pick chrome, black or copper rather than standard white plastic. Make sure a wooden top is finished with a waterproof coating, such as Osmo oil or yacht varnish, too. A piece of worktop or tiles can also be added to the top for durability. Try upcycling a sideboard or chest of drawers and turning it into a double vanity unit, painted to your spec. Even a bedside table or kitchen cabinet could work if you switch the legs for taller ones or fix it to the wall like Suzanne has.

Swap tired taps with luxe alternatives for a quick and easy bathroom update
What’s on trend now? Stainless steel and chrome have dominated the tap market for years but, recently, there’s been a move towards standout materials, colours and finishes, as hardware becomes a statement feature in its own right. Looks range from industrial-style copper and brass with exposed pipework to glam deco-style polished brass, to more contemporary options in rose gold or matt black.
Are they hard wearing? Most taps are made of stainless steel or brass, which is then finished with hard wearing metallic plating or powdercoating. Brass is more durable, but is pricier than stainless steel. Powdercoating is used to create coloured finishes, from black or white to bold

Is it easy to replace an existing tap? For a quick revamp, swap like for like, so you don’t have to move the pipework. Check how many tap holes your basin has. Monobloc mixer taps need one hole and have a single spout, with either single or twin levers to control flow and temperature. Pillar taps come as single units, so require two cut-outs. Three-hole basin mixers have a separate spout and taps. Countertop basins need a mixer tap mounted on the worktop, high enough to reach over the basin. There are also wall-mounted taps that protrude over the basin, although these will need pipework to be plumbed into the wall.

How about bath taps? These are quite similar to basin taps – either traditional pillar taps or two-hole bath mixer taps, with hot and cold water mixed in one large spout over the bath (although many bath mixers also have a shower attachment, too). Preheat the oven to 160C/Gas 3. Crush the biscuits until they form crumbs. Mix with the butter and press into the base of a 23cm springform tin. Put in the fridge to chill. Pour water into a roasting tin and place on the bottom shelf of the oven. Put the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water, stir until melted. Set aside to cool slightly. Beat the cream cheese with the sugar until smooth. Add the flour, salt, 4 of the eggs, the vanilla and sour cream. Stir well to combine. Divide the mixture between two bowls. Whisk the melted chocolate into the mixture in one of the bowls, along with the remaining egg. Dollop alternate large spoonfuls of both fillings onto the biscuit base and, using a spatula, gently swirl them to make a marbled effect. Bake for 1 hr 10 min, until firm with a slight wobble in the centre. Turn off the heat and leave to cool in the oven, then chill overnight before serving.

TILE GROUT Upgrade the look of your tiles by replacing dirty-looking grout

t doesn’t take too long for clean and bright white grout to become discoloured and dirty. Spend a weekend replacing yours for tiles that look good as new – you could take the chance to try something new, like a coloured grout or a glittery one.

PREPARE THE AREA
Lay a dust sheet on the floor to make cleaning up quicker. If you’re working over a sink, bath or basin, put the plug in to avoid grout blocking the pipe. It’s also important to wear safety goggles and, if you can’t ventilate the room by opening doors or windows, wear a mask, too.

GATHER YOUR TOOLS
Get yourself a grout rake, along with some spare blades. The best option is an electric grout remover, so buy or borrow one to make the job less labour intensive, especially if you’re doing a whole room rather than just a splashback.

Use a damp tile sponge to wipe off excess grout. If any falls out, push it back in with your fingers and leave to harden for about half an hour. Run the rounded end of a grout finisher gently along the lines to tidy. Leave to dry for several hours, then use a clean, soft cloth to polish any powdery residue off the tiles.

our central heating system is one area of the home that will always benefit from smart integration. Once set up, it automatically adjusts temperatures and boosts heat when required, all the while lowering your energy bills.

What are smart heating controls? Smart heating controls replace your existing central heating thermostat and add Wi-Fi, so you can control your heating from a smartphone app. This enables you to create a detailed heating schedule. For example, your heating could come on earlier on a Monday because you get up for yoga, or stay on all day on Friday because you work from home. You can even control the system from anywhere in the world via the app.
What gadgets make up the system?
How about other rooms? Some systems can control individual radiators, too. You can use the app to schedule heating in great detail, room by room. These systems are more expensive but versatile – for example, you may want to set it to turn off the heating in the bedrooms by day, but keep your home office cosy.
Will a professional fit it? These can all be fitted by DIY enthusiasts, in theory. If you already have a wired thermostat then you can simply swap it for your new one. But, if you don’t currently have a thermostat then it’s a bit trickier. If in doubt, some brands

Heat the oil in a large pan or wok. Fry the curry paste and ginger, then toss in the prawns and fry for a few min until cooked through. Set aside
and fry the broccoli and carrots in the same pan for 5-6min until cooked, but still with a little crunch. In a bowl mix together the dressing ingredients. Just before serving, toss the noodles into the pan with the broccoli and carrots, top with the prawns and stir through the dressing.

TAKES 15MIN MAKES 24 350g cooked, peeled prawns 4 spring onions, trimmed 1tsp freshly grated root ginger 1 egg white 1tbsp cornflour 6 slices medium-sliced white bread 2-3tbsp sesame seeds Vegetable oil, for frying Chilli dipping sauce, to serve

In the bowl of a food processor, purée the prawns, spring onions, ginger, egg white and cornflour until the mixture forms a thick paste. Season to taste. Cut the crusts off the bread, then spread the prawn purée over the slices. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and press them down well. Cut each slice of bread diagonally into 4 triangles. Heat a 1cm depth of vegetable oil in a frying pan and fry the prawn-topped bread, sesame-side down first, for 2-3min on each side, until golden and crisp. Remove from the pan and drain briefly on kitchen paper before serving the toasts hot with the chilli dipping sauce on the side.

Heat the oil in a large wok or pan over a medium heat. Add the bacon and cook until it starts to crisp. Add the rice and heat it through thoroughly, then add the spring onions and mangetout or sugar snap peas. Cook for 1-2min, stirring all the time. Pour in the sesame oil. Beat together the eggs with a fork, then use a spatula to move the rice to the edges of the wok or pan and pour the egg into the centre. Gently fold it into the rice as it cooks, so there are some curds of egg mixed in with the rice mixture. Serve immediately.

1tbsp five spice FOR THE DUCK 1tbsp clear honey powder 2 duck breasts FOR THE PANCAKES 10 Chinese pancakes ½ cucumber, cut into strips 8 spring onions, cut into strips 6tbsp hoisin sauce

Preheat the oven to 220°C/ Fan 200°C/Gas 7. Mix the five spice powder into the honey and spread it over the duck breasts. Heat a frying pan over a medium heat and add the duck breasts, skin-side down. Cook for 4min, pressing down, until the skin starts to crisp up. Turn the duck over and cook for a further 2-3min. Transfer the duck to a baking tray and cook in the oven for 15min. Remove the duck from the oven and either cut it into small strips or shred the meat using two forks. Heat the pancakes according to the packet instructions. Serve with the duck, cucumber, spring onion strips and hoisin sauce. Invite your guests to fill their own pancakes at the table.

2 x 400g rack of pork loin ribs 1tsp smoked sea salt 1tbsp five spice powder 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 600ml chicken stock 2 spring onions, chopped, to serve FOR THE SAUCE 1tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, chopped 1tsp five spice powder 4tbsp hoisin sauce 4tbsp tomato ketchup 100ml apple juice

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/ Gas 4. Put the ribs in a roasting tin. Sprinkle over the salt, five spice, onion and garlic. Pour over the stock, cover with foil and cook for 1hr, until the ribs are tender. For the sauce, heat the oil and fry the onions for 5min, until softened. Add the five spice, hoisin sauce, ketchup and apple juice, and stir to combine. Drain off most of the stock from the ribs and pour the sauce over the ribs, turning to coat well. Return to the oven to cook for 20min. Cut each rack into two and sprinkle over the spring onions to serve.

Heat the oil in a large wok, add the chicken, season generously and brown for 10min, turning as needed. Add the chilli and peppercorns, fry for 1min. Pour in the rice wine or dry sherry, oyster sauce and 100ml
water. Bring to the boil, cover with a lid, reduce the heat and leave to simmer gently for 30min. Add the mushrooms, water chestnuts, most of the spring onions and thickening granules. Cook uncovered for 15min. Tip in the noodles and stir-fry for 5min to warm through. Serve with nuts and the remaining spring onions.

Tip the sauce ingredients into a pan and bring to the boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Simmer gently until the mixture thickens. Heat the oil in a deep-fat fryer to 180-190°C. Sift flour, a pinch of salt and cornflour into a bowl, and whisk in the soda water. Dip chicken into the batter and carefully lower into the oil. Cook in batches for 5-7min until the batter is crisp. Use a slotted spoon to lift the chicken out of the oil and drain on kitchen paper. Serve with the sweet and sour sauce.
